Cries
The cries of the dying man echoed time and time again inside of Tarot. They never went away. Not when she was at school. Not when she was walking. Not when she was at home. Not when she slept, or tried to. It became common for sleep to elude her. Night after night, for two weeks, she tried to sleep but it wouldn't come. She'd pace her room, go out for night runs, but nothing helped. Nothing.
Her heart hammered in her chest as she ran through the park. She had turned her music up so loud that she wouldn't hear anyone. If only it would block out the dying man's cries.
Tarot had tried multiple times to get her dad to pull them from the League of Villains. He wouldn't. That was bad enough. But what really was bad was her brother didn't think he did anything wrong. He was changing right before her eyes. And it wasn't a good change. He wanted to kill. She could see it in his eyes. Something about that night had awoken something inside of him.
She hated it.
But what could she do? She couldn't turn in her own brother to the police.
Tears blurred and stung her eyes. She closed them for a moment. Before she could open them she slammed into a solid force and hit the ground. "Ouch! You idiot! Watch where you're going!"
"Well, that sounds familiar."
Tarot froze. His voice... She looked up to find she had ran into Shinso, again. She blinked, unaware of the tears she pushed out of her eyes.
Shinso tilted his head. "Are you okay?"
"Of course I am! Why wouldn't I be?!" Tarot glared.
"Because you're crying."
Tarot touched her cheek to find it wet. She brushed them away and stood. "Get lost."
"Are you always so rude?"
"Shut up! What do you care?"
"Just curious. This is the second time you've ran into me." He paused for a moment before adding, "Are you sure you're okay? You seem different from last time."
Tarot bristled. How dare he say something like that? What did he know about her? This was only the second time they have met.
"Would you like to talk?"
Tarot stiffened. Why would he ask that? Did he know more about her than she expected? She mentally shook her head. No, he couldn't know anything. If anyone knew about that night it would be the police. And since there had been no reports, after the ones about the dead and robbery, nothing had been said. So the police didn't know anything.
"I know we don't know each other, but it's obvious you need someone to talk to," Shinso said.
Tarot stared at him. She hated to admit it, but she could see the sincerity in his eyes. He wanted to be someone she could talk to despite not knowing each other.
She licked her lips. Talking to someone would be nice. But she couldn't. She couldn't tell him anything.
Tarot took a step away from him. Then she turned and ran.
