katie1999 you are right, the conversation between Diego and the other characters is the thread I use to go back and give more details. Originally the story was going to be a one shot, but I realized I wanted to better describe what happened. These stories grow so fast...
mjf2468 thanks for reviewing. I was just revising the next chapter, which I'll post in a while and I got sad all by myself, your reviews came just in time. The raw chickpea water thing is something I read on the internet looking for something that had nothing to do with it. It sounds like a grandmother's trick. It turns out that the water from cooked chickpeas is also used to replace egg in some vegan dishes.
November 23rd (2)
Hearing Victoria's response Diego looked even more puzzled. "Three months?"
"It's just that you've been unconscious for two months. We thought you wouldn't survive the pneumonia, but you've made it."
"But then you know...your baby is mine."
"Yes, your father knew what you'd been hiding when he saw the ring you gave me."
He nodded. "The ring, of course. It was... important."
He looked uneasy, and she tried to calm him. "Don't worry about anything. What matters is that you rest and recover."
"But... we have to get married as soon as possible."
"We're already married. Don't you remember?"
He shook his head. "When?"
"Almost two months ago. It was your father's idea. When Zorro disappeared and we found you injured and nearly drowned I didn't know what to do. I was more and more convinced I was expecting a baby, but there was no news of him. His cape was found near you and days later the sea washed ashore the body of a man in black pants who was badly decomposed and eaten by fish. That convinced me that Zorro was really dead, because he wouldn't have... you wouldn't have left me willingly."
He moved a hand to take hers, with the saddest look she had ever seen on his face. "Never, I love you, I would never leave you." he said.
She took his hand and caressed it. "I know, but then I thought Zorro was dead. The thing is, we thought you would die too, because doctor Hernandez didn't give us hope, and your father, upon learning that I was expecting Zorro's child proposed that I say the baby was yours and that you had promised to marry me."
Diego nodded, trying to get it all straight. "And I did, I promised you." he said at last.
"But as Zorro, not as Diego." she said getting a little serious. Then she calmed down again. "The thing is, he begged me to do it, because he wanted to claim the baby as his grandchild, even though it really wasn't."
