"Hey, Penny, have you seen Sonic?" Chris asked as he walked up to the pink and white hedgehog. She shrugged. "No."
Sonic zoomed past them and she looked up. "There he is."
"Perfect!" Chris grinned. He ran towards the blue hedgehog, waving something in his hands, yelling, "HEY, SONIC, A LETTER CAME FOR YOU!"
Sonic flung the back door open and ran out before Chris could catch him.
"A letter?" Penny asked, walking outside to stand next to the perplexed boy. He nodded and glanced at the letter. After reading the front, his eyes widened. "Ah, it's from the President!"
"The President?" Penny asked curiously.
"You are cordially invited to a black-tie charity ball." Chuck read aloud. He hummed. "Sounds interesting."
"It's addressed to Sonic," Chris grinned. "But it says right there he can bring as many friends as he wants!"
"Can we go, Grandpa?" Penny pleaded, giving the older man puppy dog eyes. "Pleeeaaassseeeee?"
Chuck chuckled, looking up from the letter with a grin. "Well, then in that case, I say we dust off our best party duds and make it a day!"
"YAY!" Chris, Penny, Amy, Cream, and Tails cheered excitedly.
Amy sighed dreamily, clasping her hands together. "I bet they'll serve lots of yummy food there! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!"
"Me too!" Tails chuckled.
"And don't forget about the desert!" Penny grinned happily.
"I'm back!"
Penny turned around to see Sonic standing there, and the young hedgehog's grin grew as she ran over to him, grabbing his hands excitedly. "Sonic, guess what?"
"What is it?" Sonic asked curiously. "You seem pretty excited."
"I sure am!" Penny grinned. "Turns out that the President is having a huge banquet party!"
"Yeah!" Chris chimed in, walking over. "And you're invited!"
"I am?" Sonic hummed.
Chris nodded. "And all of us get to go too. It'll be fun!"
"When is this party?"
"On Thursday!"
"Can't make it."
"Ah, why can't you?!"
"Sonic, why?!" Penny asked in disappointment.
"I promised Helen we'd hang out." Sonic told the two.
"Helen?" Penny asked curiously. "Who is she?"
"Helen is the girl from my class, the one in the wheelchair." Chris told her. He glanced at Sonic curiously. "Is that the Helen you're talking about Sonic? The girl from my class? That Helen?"
Sonic nodded. "Yeah, that's the one. She's a friend of mine."
"I didn't know that."
"I met her over at the lake." The hedgehog explained how he met Helen. She seemed to be struggling with her wheelchair when he arrived, and the blue speedster sped her out of the mud that trapped her. They spent a few moments talking, and how she dreamed about going to an island which held beautiful flowers of all different kinds. Sonic went on saying how he promised he'd take her there Thursday.
"I promised." Sonic concluded. He glanced up in realization. "Oh, I've got a lot of work to do!" He zoomed over to Chuck. "Hey, Chuck, I need some life jackets and a boat."
"Check over in the storage room," Chuck said, not looking up from the letter. With the information he needed, Sonic zoomed outside, closing the door behind him, leaving Chris dumbfounded.
The car stopped in front of the Whitehouse, where Penny and the rest of the gang were met by reporters and cameramen, all looking at them and chatting excitedly. Amy was the first one to hop out of the car. She struck a pose in her brand new red dress and shoes, all fit with matching long white gloves.
Penny came out next, wearing a fancy pink dress that was below-the-knees and had elbow-length sleeves. The boys wore fancy suits and colorful bow ties. Cream wore a lighter pink dress than Penny, while Cheese for once had a different colored bow tie, a tie that matched Cream's pink dress.
The cameramen and reporters were quickly pushed away by a man who looked overexcited about something. His grin was so crazy that it kind of freaked Penny out a little. She stared at him suspiciously as he walked over to her with a grin. "Here's our guest of honor!"
His excitement faded as he scanned the curious looking group of people. "Hey, where's Sonic?"
"U...Uh..." Penny stuttered, uncomfortable. "I...He..."
"Not coming." Chuck said simply, saving her from saying anything.
"WHAAAAAAAAAATTTT?!" The man screamed, completely stunned about that sudden news. Chuck raised his fist in the air and lunged towards the White House. "TO THE PARTY!"
"TO THE PARTY!" Penny repeated, and she, Tails, Chris, Amy, Cream, and Cheese darted after Chuck, leaving the shocked man standing there.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE'S NOT HOME?!"
Penny stared at the man in suspicion as he yelled into the phone. She watched as the President turned to him with an half amused half annoyed look. "Next time I take your advice, don't let me."
"I'm gonna get Sonic if it's the last thing I do!" The assistant said childishly. He turned back to the phone. "Connect me to the defense! Mr. Secretary? Sir? We have an emergency. We need to fully mobilize all troops! GET ME SONIC! HE'S RUINING MY PARTY!"
Penny let out a heavy sigh, glancing down at the plate of food in front of her. "Sonic..."
This man's ridiculous actions continued through the party. He seemed so obsessed with keeping the reporters and cameramen on deck until Sonic came. He'd served them a hearty meal, now he was bringing drinks to their table. "Now, then, freshly squeezed juice, everyone? HEY! WE'RE RUNNING LOW ON HOR D'OEUVRES!"
He grunted in annoyance, muttering under his breath. "Ugh, they'd better find that hedgehog fast!"
It was a wild ride for Sonic, but he finally managed to reach Helen. The blonde girl sat patiently in her wheelchair, waiting for him too appear with the boat and life jackets. She felt a swift breeze on her arm, and she turned around to see Sonic standing there, hoisting a boat over his head with a smirk on his face. "I'm back! You ready?"
Helen gave him a wide grin and a nod.
It took a while, but soon Sonic had managed to row the boat through the lake. "Just a little further..."
Helen smiled at Sonic, clasping her hands together. "I'm so excited! I've dreamed on seeing this island for so long, Sonic!" She lowered her head down sadly. "I wish my father could've come with me. If only he didn't have to work so hard. We could be together more."
Sonic smiled and peered over his shoulder. "Almost there!" He turned to the island with a smile, but the sound of whirring caused him to gasp and glance up with a glare.
Helicopters.
"Who are they?!" Helen asked. She let out a scream as they lowered themselves closer to the boat, the strong wind causing it to rock dangerously in the water. The two passengers let out a yelp as a grappling hook snagged itself in the bottom of the boat, and it slowly pulled them up to the helicopter above.
Sonic growled and turned to Helen. "Helen, are you okay?"
Helen gave him a soft smile that reminded the blue hedgehog too well of Penny. "I'm fine."
"Good!" The hedgehog grabbed the grappling hook and pulled it from the boat, carefully securing the hook to the wheelchair. "Hang on tight, okay?!"
Helen let out a yell as they sailed through the air. When they got near the land, the hedgehog released the grappling hook and they landed on the edge of the cliff. Helen let out a terrified gasp as her chair tilted backward, but Sonic thought quick and zoomed them both to safety.
Sonic whipped his forehead in relief and turned to Helen, who was leaning over and crying. He glanced at her with worry. "Don't cry, Helen, you're all right now."
Helen's sniffles soon turned into happy giggles, much to the hedgehog's surprise. Helen turned to him with a grin. "Sorry, it's just that...well, I feel so alive!" She giggled. "I never thought someone like me could have such an adventure!"
Sonic smiled and gave her a wink. He turned around and narrowed his eyes at the helicopters in front of them. "Those guys don't just give up, do they?" He turned to Helen with a grin. "Are you ready for another adventure?"
"Of course!"
"All right!"
And with that, Sonic zoomed off.
Penny let out a small moan as she glanced at her plate of food. "This is boring, guys. When do you think Sonic'l get here?"
Tails shrugged at her. "Wish I knew."
Penny glanced at the assistant and let out a heavy sigh.
"I really do love my mom and dad." Helen told Sonic as they hid in the forest for a while. "They're so good to me, that's why they work so hard. So I can have everything I need. They make sure I have the best doctors, the best medicine, even this wheelchair must've cost them a lot of money!" She sighed and glanced down. "There's only one thing I want more than anything, though, is that's to spend more time with them and have more fun." She turned to Sonic with a wide grin. "But I had lots of fun today, Sonic! I've never been so excited in my whole life!"
Sonic smiled at her and frowned as he glanced towards the forest, and then back at her with a grin. "I have a feeling we're both in for a little more excitement."
"Huh?"
Sonic nodded slightly towards the forest, and Helen followed his direction to see lights moving towards them at full speed. The hedgehog quickly got to his feet and grasped the wheelchair handles. Helen turned to him with a grin. "I'm ready if you are!"
"Okay!"
"GO!"
At Helen's command, Sonic zoomed off. The girl glanced over at Sonic with an excited grin on her face. "You think we can beat 'em?"
"A piece of cake! Now hold on tight!"
Helen let out an excited yelp as Sonic zoomed even faster through the forest, dodging any obstacles that got in their way with ease, making the trail difficult for their pursuers to handle. Sonic smirked over his shoulder. "Thought you'd catch me, did ya?!"
"SONIC, UP AHEAD!" Helen cried in fright.
Sonic glanced up and his eyes widened at a wall blocking their path, and quickly skidded to a stop before either of them got hurt. They glanced behind them to see the men coming closer.
"Here they come!" Helen gasped.
Sonic gave her a knowing grin and pulled the wheelchair back. Helen glanced at him uneasily. "You ready?"
"Here goes!" Sonic grinned. He zoomed up the cliff, and made it safely to the top. The sound of crashing caused the two to glance down, and they grinned at the sight of the soldiers on the ground, moaning dizzily. Sonic and Helen glanced at each other, and burst out laughing. They turned around, and both let out surprised gasps.
Flowers. They filled the whole mountain top in a snowy white blanket with their soft petals, wavering softly in the wind and shining brightly in the moonlight.
Helen smiled happily at the sight in front of them. "Dad was right, Sonic! They're the prettiest flowers anywhere!"
Sonic smiled at her, kneeling down. "I'll pick some for you, Helen." He was about to pick the first flower when.,,
"DON'T!"
Sonic jumped back a little and glanced at Helen in surprise, who was looking at him pleadingly. She smiled at him. "Leave them just as they are! I wanna go back someday with my mother and father!"
Sonic stood tall next to her, smiling in understanding. "I get it. That way, it'll be just as beautiful."
The sound of grappling hooks being shot up was heard, and Sonic turned to the ground with wide eyes. The soldiers had recovered pretty quickly than he expected, and were now climbing up the cliff. Sonic narrowed his eyes. "These guys just don't quit!"
"We can't let them up here!" Helen said, fear in her voice. "If we do, they'll ruin all the flowers!"
Sonic shot her a determined glare. "Not if I can help it." The hedgehog zoomed to the neighboring cliff and grinned at the soldiers teasingly. "Over here!"
Just as planned, the soldiers moved towards them and Sonic once again sped off, the men following close behind them. Sonic peered over his shoulder. "Those guys are faster than I thought!" He glanced up and his eyes widened, and he quickly skidded to a stop. They were actually on top of another cliff, and this one led right into a huge body of water.
"Bummer!" Sonic gulped. He glared at the men in front of them, and the two let out a yelp as a helicopter popped up from behind.
They were surrounded.
"All right, Sonic, let's go!" One of the soldiers said threateningly. "You're wanted by the President, and don't try any funny stuff!"
Sonic smirked. "I'll go, but you'll have to catch me!"
"All right." The men raised their grappling hooks. "You asked for it!"
Sonic moved to the center of the men, and jumped as soon as they fired, allowing the grappling hooks to twirl up in a knot. Sonic ran over and picked Helen up in his arms and zoomed up the rope and into the helicopter, tossing the driver out. Helen and Sonic both sat down in the seats, Sonic taking the wheel and Helen in the passenger seat. She glanced at him curiously. "Can you fly this thing?"
"I usually leave the flying to Tails," Sonic responded, giving the controls an uneasy glance. "but I'll sure try." He pressed a button which released the ropes that were shot at them earlier, causing the men to tumble back from the force.
Sonic gave Helen a grin. "Hey, almost forgot something!"
"Huh?"
Sonic pressed another button and out shot another grappling hook, which wrapped around the handle of Helen's wheelchair.
Helen glanced out the window and gasped excitedly. "Sonic, the flowers!" She leaned forward, soaking in every sight of the beautiful flowers below them.
"Well, I guess our adventure's over, Sonic." Helen said happily as they flew home together.
"Guess so," Sonic grinned, turning to her. "Did you have fun?"
Helen let out a giggle. "Sure did!"
"It's getting late." Sonic hummed, glancing out the window. "I should take you home."
"But, Sonic." Helen leaned over to look at him. "Aren't you supposed to see the President?"
"That guy can wait."
"But I'd feel awful if you didn't get to see him because of me. Please go see him, I'll even go with you!"
"Since you put it that way!" Sonic grinned.
"What?!" The assistant yelled into the phone. "He did?! The what?! The chopper?!" He turned to the sound of the door opening and his eyes widened.
Sonic.
The assistant grinned. "It's Sonic! He came here after all! HE'S HERE! HE'S REALLY HERE!"
The President walked up to Sonic with a friendly smile, reaching his hand towards him. "Great to finally meet you, Sonic."
Sonic took the President's hand and shook it with a smile.
"Now, hold it right there!" The assistant said excitedly. He glanced around frantically. "Hurry! Hurry! Reporters, photographers! This is the moment we've been waiting for!" He glanced around and his eyes widened in shock. Penny followed his gaze towards a nearby table, where all the reporters and cameramen were sleeping out of exhaustion. The assistant let out a scream, and collapsed to the ground.
Sonic and the gang looked stunned for a second, but their stunned expressions turned into smiles and laughter.
"So there we were, in the middle of these beautiful flowers! All of a sudden, we looked down and saw the men climbing towards us! Before I knew what was happening, Sonic and I were whirring through the forest, and the men were following us on these strange flying bicycles, but we were way ahead of them, and then we came to a cliff, looking way down into the ocean! And this helicopter came so they could take Sonic to the president! And they shot out this rope with a claw in the end, and Sonic grabbed me and..."
Helen paused in the middle of her story, glancing at the bowl in front of her. She turned to her mom with a smile. "Oh, Momma, could I..." she asked, holding her bowl up to her mom.
"All right." Her mother chuckled, taking the bowl from her daughter and headed to the kitchen. "I don't think I've ever seen you eat like this!"
Helen grinned and turned to her dad. "So anyway-"
Helen's dad stood up. "Now, hold on, honey, I'm gonna get a refill, too. With a story as fascinating as this, I'm gonna need my energy." He chuckled as he stood up, walking towards the kitchen.
"Hurry back, Dad!" Helen called happily. "And I'll tell you about the helicopter! Sonic grabbed me out of my wheelchair and he carried me all up the rope!"
"All right, all right!" Helen's dad chuckled. He turned to his wife with a smile. "Our little girl's had quite the adventure."
"Do you hear?" Helen's mom asked, happy tears forming at the edge of her eyes. "She's so changed. She sounds so...so happy. I just want to be there for her, spend more time with her." Her shoulders shook as she sobbed softly, and her husband wrapped an comforting arm around her shoulders. "Yeah, I've been working too many hours lately. I haven't spent enough time with the family. Let's plan a trip to that island Helen loves so much. What do you say?"
His wife turned to him with a happy smile.
"Mom, Dad!" Helen called from the table. "What's taking you so long?!"
"Coming, honey!"
"Sorry, dear! Your father and I were having an important discussion."
"Hurry! I'm coming to the most exciting part!" Helen grinned. "So anyway, we got into the helicopter..."
"A helicopter?" Her mom smiled. "I've never been in one."
"And I bet you flew it all the way to the President." Helen's dad snickered.
"No fair, Dad!" Helen shot at him, chuckling. "You're ruining my story!"
What had happened to Helen today...was something she knew she would never forget. And it was all thanks to Sonic, who made it possible.
