Chapter 3 The Daughter I Never Knew

Roppongi Military Base, Hospital…

Tsuneo was sitting on a waiting chair twiddling his thumbs, James already left to get some rest but would pray for the girl's recovery. Allen also stopped by and said the thugs were arrested, though the local police want him to stop by the station to give a statement, after that he also left. Tsuneo was in thought, the girl in the room could be a daughter he was unaware he had, yet in his heart he knew it was true. He was praying that she would make a full recovery, but this wait was agonizing.

"Captain Asuka," said a voice.

Tsuneo turned his head to see it was General Sterling, he stood up immediately and saluted, "sir".

Sterling returned the salute, "at ease Captain, now I understand you brought a guest into our base tonight. I am not against what you did, but some politician outside our base might. To prevent this as soon as she is healed we must escort her off the base.

"Sir permission to speak," requested Tsuneo.

"Granted," said Sterling.

"She might be my daughter," said Tsuneo.

This caused Sterling to raise an eyebrow, "are you sure?"

"Not 100% sir, I am going to request the Dr. for a DNA test," said Tsuneo.

"Explain Captain," said Sterling.

"Yes sir as you know my ex-wife is Nishizumi Shiho, back during the final week before we officially divorced, we both had some heavy drinking nights, whether some part of her still loved me or not, I don't know and we both ended up in bed sometimes together," said Tsuneo.

"I see, so your saying that this young lady was a result of one of those nights," said Sterling.

"Yes sir," said Tsuneo.

"Get your DNA test marine and then comeback to me with the results," said Sterling, "your dismissed," saluting the Captain. Tsuneo returned it and cut after the General. He then turned and left out of the office.

Tsuneo sighed in relief as another door opened and out came Dr. Arc., "how is she doctor?" he asked.

"Hm, I will say she is one lucky girl, saw no signs of a skull fracture, just a bit a bruising. She likely wake up with a concussion, still I expect her to make a full recovery," explained Arc.

"That's a relief, thank you doctor, have one more thing to ask of you, I believe she is my daughter, I'd like a DNA test done," said Tsuneo.

"Very well," said Arc walking over to get a test tube. "Say ahhhh," he ordered. Tsuneo opened his mouth as Arc collected a saliva sample then put it in the test tube. "Caroline!" he called out.

"Yes?!" said Caroline from the other room.

"Did you get the girls blood sample?" asked Arc.

"Working on it doctor," said Caroline.

"Excellent, bring the sample to the lab when you're done," said Arc.

"Yes doctor," said Caroline.

"Doctor can I use the computer here , there is something important I need to look up about her," requested Tsuneo.

"Of course Captain," said Arc gesturing an open guest computer nearby.

Tsuneo took a seat and began logging into the computer. He then looked up Sensha-Do matches from the last big tournament. After looking up Kuromorimine Girls Academy matches, he watched ever last one of them in the 62nd Tournament. He had to admit he was enjoying the battles, Maho had become a great commander. Miho was also good in her own right, both of them made him proud. Then when the final matches against Pravada came up, he saw the Panther fall into the water. Then witnessed his possible daughter jump out of her flag tank going into harm's way to save the crew, of course their flag tank was lost.

After watching the video, suitcases, far from home, and now this lost match, the conclusion was she was kicked out of her house and probably going to be disowned for losing his match, figures. Still to do this to our daughter over saving lives, Shiho you've gone too far. Still he wanted to get the story from Miho.

He got up out of the chair after logging out of the computer. He was going towards the room with beds but then stopped noticed Miho's backpack and noticed something in the side pocket wrapped in a plastic bag. Wondering what it was, he took it out and unwrapped the plastic bag and the object was a teddy bear of kind with a black eye, a cast, and bandages. Tsuneo chuckled a bit wondering about his daughter's taste in stuffed animals. He grabbed all her thing to bring with him.

He walked into the room and at the end of the row of beds she was in the last bed by the window. He walked over put her stuff under her bed. Then stood over her, with the bear he lifted the covers and snuggled the bear under her arm. Then stood their staring down with hopes that she would make a full recovery. She had been through a lot, "don't worry," he whispered putting a hand on her forehead, "daddy is here for you, Miho". He then pulled up a chair next to her bed intending to watch over her all night. Eventually though due to the alcohol he drank earlier, the exhaustion of the fight, and the stress of worrying took hold and he fell asleep in the chair.

The next morning his eyes slowly opened, then quickly woke himself up knowing he fell asleep. He noticed that Miho was still sleeping peacefully. Standing up to stretch his back as it felt sore from the uncomfortable chair, he figured he should've just slept on one of the beds in the room.

He sat back down and then noticed Miho's eyes began to stir. They slowly began to open slowly, her cute brown eyes revelated. She turned her head and saw a man in uniform sitting by her bed. "Good morning," he said.

Miho wondering where she was jolted up suddenly then go out of the bed and nearly stumbled. Tsuneo moved quickly and caught her by the stomach. He gently picked her up and placed her back on the bed. "Whoa there young lady, stay in bed, the doctor should come in soon," said Tsuneo.

Miho then began to feel herself then felt the bandages on her head, then remembered what happened. "Where am I? Who are you?" she asked.

"I am Captain Tsuneo Asuka United States Marine Corp, and you ran into a bad crowd. Luckily me and my two compatriots were nearby and we brought you to Roppongi military base to recover," explained Tsuneo. "Now what is your name?" he asked doing this to see if her mind was still good.

"Nishizumi Miho," said Miho looking at the man, he was Japanese in an American uniform. Yet looking at his face, he seemed familiar, yes that time she stumbled a picture of her mother with a man and this man bears a striking resemblance. No it could not be he was dead.

"Good morning Captain, and ah it's good to see you awake," said Arc coming in with Nurse Caroline.

"Morning doctor, your patient is awake," said Tsuneo.

"I can see that, good to see your awake young lady you had us all worried," said Arc.

Arc then pulled up a chair, "How do you feel Ms. Nishizumi?" asked Arc.

"I feel a headache and like the room is moving," said Miho. Suddenly, Miho face began to turn a bit green, she clenched her stomach.

Caroline immediately brought a bag and handed it to Miho, who then puked in the bag.

"Well, that's to be expected," said Arc. "It seems that you have a bruised skull," pulling out her x-rays, "you will be our guest for at least seven to ten days."

"Do you need to contact your family Ms. Nishizumi?" asked Caroline.

"No,," said Miho having a saddened look, "I am not on good terms and I was on my way to Ooarai," she explained.

"When you ran into bad company," said Tsuneo. "Why didn't you take a bus or cab?"

"I'm cutoff right now, only enough to transfer," said Miho.

"Cutoff? Why would they cut you off?" asked Arc.

"I know why, forgive me Ms. Nishizumi, I did some digging, was it because of the last match?" asked Tsuneo.

"Hai," said Miho looking like she was getting ready to cry.

"Please, don't cry," said Tsuneo putting a hand on her back, "I'll layoff the subject for now."

"Yes, let's focus on your recovery for now," said Arc.

"Good morning Captain," said Sterling, Tsuneo saluting the General and he returned it. "I see our guest is awake," said Sterling.

"Yes sir," said Tsuneo.

"Welcome to Roppongi Base Ms. Nishizumi, I am Major General Thomas Sterling," said Sterling.

Miho a bit nervous having all this attention at once, feeling a bit overwhelmed. "Thank you general," said Miho.

"Glad to see you're alright now. Captain your our first shipment of Ammunition from Arrow Strike will be arriving in two hours, see to it Captain," ordered Sterling he sniffed the air. "And take a shower Captain!"

"Yes sir," said Tsuneo marching off to a shower.

After freshening up, he went back to the main room where Miho and Dr. Arc was.

"Hello doctor, how she doing?" asked Tsuneo.

"It's as I thought, she has a concussion as well, but she will make a full recovery," said Arc standing up. "Until then she will stay here for the time being. Ms. Nishizumi, if you need anything my nurses will assist you, until then I have other work to do, good day to you".

"Miho, is it ok if I call you that?" asked Tsuneo.

"It's fine," said Miho and pulled the bear out.

"Is that your favorite bear?" asked Tsuneo.

"This is Boko, he get's beaten up but he never gives up, but still gets beaten up," said Miho.

"Heh Heh I see," chuckled Tsuneo. He got up, "well I must now attend my duties, I'll come see you when I'm done."

Nurse Caroline then came up with some rice porridge, "hope you're hungry," she said laying the tray in front of Miho.

"Thank you," said Miho.

"And Nurse Caroline, perhaps we should move her to a more private room, I'm sure some wounded soldiers will be coming in," suggested Tsuneo.

"Of course Captain, we will after she's finishes eating," said Caroline.

"Thank you nurse," said Tsuneo leaving

"I'll be right back with some orange juice, and your prescribed medicine" said Caroline.

Miho began to eat, while these Americans were taking good care of her. She was still contemplating on whether to contact her sister and this Captain, was he her father.

Warehouse 8…

In the Warehouse it was buzzling with activity with trucks from the ships arriving with ammunition, parts, and tools. Forklifts were coming in and out.

"Get that ammunition to the back right corner, don't stack it too high," ordered Jerome.

"The extra wings go in the middle left Sargent," said Sarah.

Tsuneo meanwhile was looking over the manifest at all that was coming in. Several pounds of ammunition including bombs and bullets, spar wings for mostly P-51s and some Spitefires.

"Tsuneo, how much more is coming in?" asked Allen.

"Next shipment is coming in in a few days, mostly some Avenger Dive Bombers and some P-38 Lightnings" answered Tsuneo.

"Hey careful with that ammo yank," said James.

Tsuneo and Allen walked over to him, "good day sir, lot of supplies today," said James.

"Yep, so Tsuneo how's the young lady?" asked Allen.

"She should make a full recovery, I plan to see her again during lunch," said Tsuneo.

"We'll come along with you," said James.

"Agreed, what kind of grub are they serving I wonder," said Allen.

"I believe it's chicken soup or tacos today," said James.

"You guys go ahead, I'm just going to grab two bowls and see Miho," said Tsuneo.

"I'll come with you," said James.

"So will I," said Allen.

All the men left for the Cafeteria, Tsuneo telling them the story of Miho's match.

Roppongi Military Base, Hospital…

Miho was still sitting up in her bed reading and studying textbooks for school, does not hurt to stay ahead. Now in a private room as the previous one was beginning to fill up with soldiers. Her thought then went back to her mother who has kicked her out and is threatening to disown for what happened during the last tournament. It saddened her greatly, she missed her home and her sister.

"Miho," called Tsuneo.

This broke Miho out of her thought, May I introduce Lt. James Rogers British Army 7th Armor and Captain Allen Dirk US Army 1st Armor".

"Hi," said Allen.

"Good afternoon Miss," said James.

Miho a bit embarrassed at the attention from all these military men stuttered a bit, "eh, eh, hello, I'm Nishizumi Miho, thank you for saving my life," said Miho.

'Hm, embarrassed in situation like this and some Stutter, yep definitely my daughter,' thought Tsuneo. "I see that you are studying that's very studious of you, I hope you're hungry," said Tsuneo putting down the bowl of rice porridge.

Miho, then heard her stomach growl for everyone to hear, it slightly embarrassed her.

A chuckled came from the three men. Tsuneo sat the tray on Miho, "hope you like chicken soup".

"Thank you," said Miho as she began to eat.

"So how are you feeling now?" asked Tsuneo.

"Much better," said Miho, "I'm no longer dizzy or feeling nausea".

"That's good news," said James.

"You know when your getting discharged?" asked Allen.

"In about eight days said the doctor," said Miho.

"How's the food?" asked Tsuneo.

"It's…" coughed Miho as she began to choke on a large piece of chicken. Tsuneo reacted quickly and poured her some water from the jug on her nightstand and handed it to her.

Miho took it and started to chug it down.

"Guess the chicken went down the wrong pipe," said James.

"You ok?" asked Allen.

"I'm fine thank you," said Miho.

"So when do you start school?" asked Tsuneo.

"Next week," said Miho.

"Did you runaway?" asked James.

"No, I was kicked out," said Miho.

"I see, was it for that Sensha-Do match?" asked Allen.

This made Miho distant and sad, she did not wish to talk about it.

"Allen can't you see your making her uncomfortable, that's a touchy subject," said Tsuneo.

"Oh, forgive me miss," said Allen.

"If it means anything to you, me and the Captains believe what you did was very brave," said James.

"Indeed, it took courage," said Tsuneo.

"Good day all," said Jerome walking in with Sarah.

"Ensign, Lt., what are you doing here?" asked James.

"Sir, thought I see what action I missed last night," said Jerome, "what's up, I'm Ensign Jerome Armistead at your service".

"She's the one?" asked Sarah.

Miho could do nothing but stare, when she realized she was staring she looked away.

Jerome noticed this already, "Oh I see, I'm the first black man you've ever seen," he said.

"I'm sorry," said Miho.

Jerome only began to laugh, "It's fine I'm cool with it," he said holding out his fist.

"Um?" Miho did not get it.

"It's a fist bump Miho," said Tsuneo holding a fist to Allen and he fist bumped Tsuneo.

"It's a way of friendship in America," said Sarah.

Miho fist bumped Jerome and he smiled. "Miho, that's a pretty name, alright then you keep it cool, see you around," said Jerome taking his leave.

"You'll get used to him Ms.," said James. "So tell us about Sensha-Do what is it like?"

"I'm curious, why can only young ladies play the sport when a tank is a weapon of war?" asked Allen.

"We allow boys and girls in Arrow Strike, why not Sensha-Do?" asked Sarah.

"Eh!?,"Miho could not believe this straight question, how was she going to talk to genuine soldiers. She was nervous and her headache was coming back as she clenched her head.

"Whoa gentlemen, lady, don't overwhelm the girl," said Tsuneo noticing the headache. "You ok Miho?"

"Yes, I'm fine," said Miho.

"Our apologies Miss, we did not intend to overwhelm you," said James.

"We'll take our leave, we have some tanks to oversee, get well soon," said Allen.

"I must fill out some more paper work," said Sarah, see you around," said Sarah.

"I'll bring you some tea directly from England tomorrow," said James, both men taking their leave.

"Their good people Miho, I understand it's hard to answer that kind of question," said Tsuneo.

"Can I ask you something?" asked Miho.

"Sure of course you can," said Tsuneo.

"Why are you in Japan? I asked the nurse and she said you've arrived recently," asked Miho.

"Well Miho, have you heard of Arrow Strike?" asked Tsuneo.

"You mean the fighter plane games in America," said Miho.

"Correct, I've been contracted by Arrow Strike to be the head of Instruction, training judging, and logistics" said Tsuneo. "In fact I have a son who's a pilot, an ace".

"You must be proud, you must be a good pilot yourself" said Miho.

Tsuneo chuckled a bit, "yes I am, I'm a decent pilot myself, however he likely inherited his natural skills from his grandfather on the mom side".

"Tell me Miho, despite what happened in that match, will you continue Sensha-Do?" asked Tsuneo.

"No, my mother was angry with me" said Miho.

"I see, I don't blame you after what happened and how you were treated for saving lives, what of your father?" asked Tsuneo.

"I don't have a father, he ran away, my mother said he died a drunk in an alleyway a disgrace and was never found," said Miho.

This put Tsuneo in a shocked silence and eyes narrowed.

Miho took notice and was a bit nervous, "Um?" wondering if she offended him.

'Really Shiho, that's the story you gave them?' he thought.

"Sir?" asked Miho wondering what's wrong, "sir?"

Finally snapped back to reality, "Oh sorry, something came to mind suddenly, anyways perhaps your father is alive, you never know, but for now I must get back to work, I'll see you tomorrow said Tsuneo, "but Miho going back to what happened in that match, no matter what anyone says, even your own mother, you did the right thing," said Tsuneo. "My collogues from earlier also believe that."

This made Miho almost cry in joy, she sniffled a bit, hearing the word she always wanted to hear, "Thank you Captain."

"Now I must be going, I'll see you again," said Tsuneo leaving.

"Bye," said Miho.

'Shiho, you think I'm dead, and really a drunk, I admit I was a drunkard back then, but when Maho was born I cut down, well you are going to be shocked,' thought Tsuneo as he returned to work.

Roppongi Military Base Hospital…

Over the next week, Tsuneo would visit Miho everyday and her recovery, she would open up to him more and more, she felt more comfortable with him every time and was happy to get the visits as well as from the other officers. Tsuneo went to the lab to talk to Nurse Ashley who had the results.

"Well Captain the results are positive," she said.

"As expected," said Tsuneo. "Should I tell her?"

"Well Captain I would say no," advised Ashley.

"Why not?" asked Tsuneo.

"Child development and psychology is one of my fields, she has grown up without you for years not aware of your existence, it's best for you to wait for her to ask you. A child growing up without either parent can take its toll on their mind. For now regain her right to call you a father, who knows how she will react, in most cases the child will run away," advised Ashley.

"I see, I shall do just that, thank you Ashley," said Tsuneo.

"The general has been sent your results, he will see to it no hog nosed politician or reporters comes snooping," said Ashley.

Tsuneo then went to Miho's room walking in, he saw Arc was finishing up a checkup. "Well Ms. Nishizumi, your recovery is going well. I can release you tomorrow evening," said Arc.

"Thank you doctor," said Miho.

"That's good news," said Tsuneo.

"Oh, Captain, how are you?" asked Miho.

"Well, it seem you will be released tomorrow, but where will you go?" asked Tsuneo.

"To Ooarai," said Miho, "but it will be quite late."

"How about you stay over at place," said Tsuneo "it will only be for one night."

"Um?" wondered Miho.

"Do not worry, I will respect your privacy, I have two kids of my own around your age, including a daughter, you'll be treated like my own daughter, oh and don't worry about the medical bill, it's on me," said Tsuneo.

This caught Miho by surprise, this man has looked after her and was even going further to help her, "thank you Captain," said Miho.

"Your welcome," said Tsuneo.

Tsuneo's Apartment…

Miho was brought with Tsuneo to his apartment, she was surprised how small it was. She was even more floored when he gave up his bed and took the couch. She protested of course, but he insisted. After being in that military hospital for nine days, staying one night wasn't going to hurt, and he was even going to drive her to Ooarai himself.

The next morning, Miho was seated ready to have some breakfast, he had some work to do, but she didn't mind, she would be at her destination by tonight.

Tsuneo meanwhile was finishing up the last pancake with a flip and placed it with the other eleven on a plate stacked. With a slice of butter on top. He took the plate and placed it in front of Miho.

Miho looked at the huge stack, "Eh?" noticing it was way too much.

Tsuneo looked and saw what was wrong, he went overboard. He was going to make some for himself, "oh I'm sorry Miho," he said grabbing a knife and fork and taking six pancakes off and putting them on his own plate. Then taking a seat with some coffee, "ever had pancakes before Miho?"

"No, never," said Miho.

"Oh it needs one more thing," said Tsuneo getting up to get some maple syrup. He moved to pour it on Miho's pancakes.

Miho then took the knife and fork and cut a pieces and took a bite, "Mhmm," said Miho cutely and began to dig in.

"How are the pancakes?" asked Tsuneo.

"Delicious Captain," said Miho continuing to dig in.

"Glad you're enjoying them," said Tsuneo.

*Knock**Knock*

"Hmm, who could that be," wondered Tsuneo getting up for the door. Then he opened the door and immediately got a flying hug. "Hi daddy," said Emma.
