Chapter 5 My Father
Road…
Tsuneo was looking forward, not even looking at Miho as he gathered his thoughts as he parked his truck on the side of the road. He was taken completely off guard. Yet it did made him happy that his daughter was no fool. Get to establish eye to eye contact and said, "yes, I am your father."
This put Miho through a huge range of emotions. She could not believe it, her hunch was right. A father who she thought was dead was alive all this time.\
"I know you have many questions for me, and I promise I shall answer all of them," promised Tsuneo.
Miho did not know how to feel, awe, happy, anger, just a mix of emotions, "did you know, and for how long?" she asked.
With a sigh, "I knew you were my daughter since the base after I asked the doctor for a DNA test," said Tsuneo.
"Why didn't you tell me?" asked Miho.
"I'm sorry Miho, I did not keep this from you to hurt you. I took the advice of the nurse on the base to keep it a secret. A part of me wanted to tell you, but I thought you'd run as soon as I did, so I wanted to earn your acknowledgement of being called your father since I was not there for the first part of your life."
Miho was thinking of another question, "What happened between you and Okaa-san?"
"Well, me and your Okaa-san had a difference of opinion when it came to Sensha-do. At first I agreed it should only be with girls. However, I eventually began to change and believe boys should also have a right to play, equality for all. This was the center of our argument. What made it worse was when the Sensha-do Federation wanted to shut down the Mechanics Division which I headed," explained Tsuneo.
"Huh, you mean boys were mechanics back then," said Miho surprised.
"Heh heh," he chuckled, "yes it's how I meet your Okaa-san, a story for another time."
"Why did they want to shut down the Mechanics Division?" asked Miho.
"Well you see, it goes to the core of Sensha-Do, strong, independent woman. By adding mechanics to the girls it would only make them more independent," answered Tsuneo.
Miho nodded her head in agreement and she was taking in all her father was telling her getting more confident in talking to him.
"Tell me Miho what do you think boys in Sensha-Do?" asked Tsuneo.
"Sensha-do is for young girl to grow mature and strong," said Miho.
Tsuneo a bit taken back, "I see, while we are of different opinion, it's okay to have a different opinion Miho. It's something however your Okaa-san could not accept. With Maho already in our lives she was afraid she would become of my opinion, especially that I became an advocate after the Mechanics Division was shut down. This went against the Nishizumi way, so she had enough, she divorced and took everything with only a little cash for me left" said Tsuneo with a mixture of sadness and anger.
"Did you go to America after that?" asked Miho.
"Not quite, there was some truth to drunk in an alleyway. I did have a drinking habit back then, but after marrying your mother and Maho's arrival, I cut down, but went up after the divorce, I did wonder streets and alleyways for some time, then one day I collapsed on the street," said Tsuneo.
"Huh, what happened after that?" asked Miho.
"I woke up in a church at the sight of an angel," said Tsuneo, "it was a young woman with long blonde hair, blue eyes like sapphire, her name was Alina. She was a young Church volunteer and she saved me."
"Where Alina?" asked Miho.
Then she noticed a change in her Otou-san face, it looked sad, even a small tear drop from his face, "I'm sorry," said Miho.
"It's ok Miho, I believe if you meet Alina, she would have accepted you like if you were her own daughter. She never could bare hatred towards anyone," said Tsuneo.
Miho smiled at that, "she sounds so kind," said Miho.
"Like an Angel," said Tsuneo, "I fell for her and used the money I had left to tried to start a new life in America. I wanted to become worthy of her."
"So you joined the U.S. Marine Corp," said Miho.
"Correct, not bad for a drunk in an allyway, though the next challenge was convincing her father, was not easy I tell you, after I convinced him, we go married," said Tsuneo.
"So now I have two siblings," said Miho.
"Yes," said Tsuneo, though he knew he would've been four.
"Why didn't you contact us?" asked Miho.
Tsuneo looked down away from Miho for a moment, then looked back making direct eye contact, "Miho, I want to say first of all. I am sorry for everything, not contacting, writing at least, or even knowing of your existence as well as your sister Maho. You both have every right to be angry with me. I do wish to reconcile with you, but if you are not ready, then I shall take you to Ooarai, and you can forget about me if you wish," he said. He was expecting Miho to just give the word to take her to Ooarai as he looked at the road.
"Otou-san," called Miho. Tsuneo was a bit happy being called that and turned to look at his daughter.
"You've been nothing but good to me since saving me from those thugs, taking me for medical attention, being at my side, and even taking me in," said Miho giving him a smile.
Then Miho moved from her seat to give Tsuneo was hug. Tsuneo did not expect this and in turn put one arm around Miho to return the hug. "Miho, do you have any more questions?" asked Tsuneo releasing her and Miho returned to her seat.
"No, not right now" said Miho satisfied with the answers for now.
"I have a few I want to ask you now, first tell me, what did Shiho say to you?" asked Tsuneo.
Miho had a sad look on her eye, "she said I was a disgrace to the Nizhizumi style and I should be disowned and removed, she even cut me off. I was just trying to save a friend and yet I was punished for it," she began to tear up.
Then she stopped feeling a hand on her shoulder with some tears in her eyes still. Tsuneo opened the glove compartment and pulled out a napkin and began to wipe her tears, "Miho as I told you, you did the right thing, never forget that," said Tsuneo as he finished wiping her tears.
"Let me tell you about how I earned one of my bronze stars, In Afghanistan we were ambushed by the Taliban. They caught us completely by surprise. Me and my small patrol had to advance to the rear to regroup with other units and then we'd counter attack. One of my squamates fell due to being shot in the leg. At the time I had orders to advance to the rear, instead I remembered one of the most important lessons. Never leave a man behind, I went back for him and pulled him out of the fray under heavy fire. Three of my squamates came back and laid down covering fire. I made it to the rendezvous point and together we drove the enemy off. At that moment I realized I had a graze wound. I received a bronze star and purple heart," said Tsuneo. "A different situation, but none the less it evolved saving a life or lives. My point is you put yourself in harm's way to save your friends. In my view you are a hero."
Miho began to feel better about her actions, "Thank you Otou-san." She realized that her father was nothing like her mother in fact he was the exact opposite.
"And know this Miho, despite me only knowing you for about a week, I love you. Now then, shall I take you to Ooarai." Turning on the engine.
"Actually the school ship is under maintenance, can we go home," requested Miho.
"Sure," said Tsuneo gladly.
He turned the car around to head home, overall his reconciliation with Miho went better than he expected though he knows that with Maho it might be different assuming a one year old at the time could remembered his face, then again, "Miho does Maho know of me and how is she?" asked Tsuneo.
"She remembers a man who took care of her, but then left her," said Miho, "though she is doing well, I do not know how she will react to you."
"I see, Miho I have a favor to ask you, I wish to tell Maho myself," said Tsuneo. "It's something I must do alone."
"If you won't tell Ryan and Emma that I'm their sibling," requested Miho.
"Sure, but may I ask why Miho?" he asked.
"I'm just not ready, it's a matter of getting to know them," said Miho.
"Not sure if I get you, but if your uncomfortable I'll let you tell them when you're ready, just watch out for Ryan, he has a tendency of sniffing out things, another thing you better keep calling me Captain," said Tsuneo, "Or is it that you want to avoid a death hug from Emma."
"Hai," said Miho.
"Well you will have to get used to it, in fact she will give you one soon as she sees you," said Tsuneo.
"Are you going to confront Okaa-san?" asked Miho.
Tsuneo thought for a moment, "at some point yes."
Then Miho got a text on her phone, pulling out her phone she looked at the message, "Hah," she exclaimed happily.
"What is it Miho?" asked Tsuneo.
"It's from Onee-chan, she said that she has convinced Okaa-san to unlock my account," said Miho.
Tsuneo only smiled happily for his daughter. ' So Maho looks out for her younger sister, that's good,' he thought. He continued to drive and eventually they reached his apartment.
Tsuneo's Apartment…
Both of them entered the apartment, it was late night. They noticed Ryan sleeping on the couch already asleep. Emma was sleeping but in a sitting position. "Oh Emma, you were waiting for me to come home," said Tsuneo with a smile. "Miho, why don't you and Emma share the bed, I'll take the last couch."
"Eh?" said Miho.
"It should be fine, your both sisters, well have sisters," said Tsuneo as he walked over to pick Emma up gently and went to the bedroom and laid her down, putting the covers on her.
Miho went to shower first. After coming out she went to bed next to Emma.
Tsuneo tired from the meeting and discussion with his daughter also laid on the couch to get a good night sleep.
The next morning, things were peaceful, Tsuneo had a day off and was going to sleep in, until…
"YEAAAAAA!"
Both Tsuneo and Ryan were woken up by the loud scream of joy. Both of them opened the door to the bedroom and saw Emma already arms wrapped tightly. around Miho, "Miho back, I had a dream last night that you'd come back, and it came true," said Emma, Miho with a look of why on her face.
"Emma, please let go of Miho now," said Tsuneo.
"You woke me up for this Emma," said Ryan.
"I'm sorry, I'm just so excited," said Emma.
"I can see that," said Tsuneo with a chuckle.
*Knock*
*Knock*
"Hm, who could that be?" wondered Tsuneo walking to the door and opened it revealing Eric.
"Eric?" wondered Tsuneo.
"Good morning Captain, I have news we are moving your family to a new home," said Eric. "I'm sure you will find it more comfortable with your family. Also we need your son for a field test."
"I see, where are we going?" asked Tsuneo.
Later, Arrow Strike Field HQ…
A green field outside of Tokyo with a long airstrip, three hangers, a large building, tower, and some housing. "Wow, this is astonishing," said Tsuneo.
"Wow, so cool," said Emma.
Miho looked around and was even amazed by the sight.
"Their housing over there for some of the staff, you will be staying in one of them, you will find them more spacious," said Eric.
"So what is this test sir?" asked Ryan.
"A new drone camera system for matches," said Eric.
