Chapter 8 First Day
Miho's Dorm…
Birds could be heard chirping as the morning light came. Miho and Emma were sleeping in separate beds in their new room. After arriving and doing some unpacking and furniture moving. Everyone went to sleep for school started tomorrow. Miho's clock then went off and it suddenly made Miho jump and roll out of bed. It seem she woke up from a dream of being back home. Then she realize she was not at home, the thought struck her. She looked over across from her and noticed Emma was still asleep, walking up she noticed her half-sister was drooling a bit.
Deciding it be best to wake her up herself for she remembers asking Ryan for help and his idea was getting a cup of ice. She put her hand on Emma's side and began to shake her lightly, "Emma wake up," said Miho.
Emma's eyes opened, though it still surprised Miho that her clock did not wake her up. "Morning Miho," yawned Emma, "is it time?"
"Hai," said Miho.
"You can use the bathroom first, I'll be up," said Emma.
Both girls went through their morning, once Miho got out of the bathroom, Emma went next. Getting into her uniform Emma got out and got into hers. "Oh," said Emma looking in a mirror as Miho made some quick toast. Miho looked to see what's wrong and noticed Emma's bed hair came to life and she was having a tough time. With a smile she walked over, "let me help you Emma," said Miho taking the brush and began brushing her hair.
"Ah, thank you Miho," said Emma.
"Your welcome," said Miho.
*Knock**Knock*
"Hey, you two ready?" asked Ryan outside their front door.
"Hai, will be out in a minute," said Miho.
Both girls quickly ate their toast and came out the door.
"Morning brother," said Emma hugging him, "don't me and Miho look cute?"
"Yes, very cute," said Ryan. His uniform consisting of brown loafers, white collared short sleeved buttoned shirt, with a green short sleeved coat, khaki pants, white socks, and a green tie with the Ooarai blue ribbon symbol on it.
"You look good too Ryan," said Emma.
"Let's get going," said Miho locking her dorm.
All of them walked through the streets of Ooarai, passing by a bakery, convenient store, then finally they arrived at school.
A short-haired girl with a clipboard was at the front entrance. They stopped in front of her and she looked at them. "Your names?" she asked.
"Nishizumi Miho," answered Miho.
"Asuka Emma," answered Emma.
"Asuka Ryan," answered Ryan.
The girl looked on her clipboard, then looked at Ryan checking his uniforms. "Move along," she said.
All three of them moved along and went through the front door and to a table where two girls were handing out schedules.
They took their sheets and checked their class schedule.
"Any of us in the same homeroom class?" asked Ryan as they all compared.
"Aw, Ryan won't be in the same class as us Miho," said Emma.
"Oh well," said Ryan. "Guess I will see you both at lunch."
"Hai, we will catch you later Ryan," said Miho.
"Hey no hats!" said someone from outside.
All three of them went outside to see the commotion. They saw Jimmy with the Ooarai uniform and wearing his cowboy hat arguing with the short black haired girl.
"Take the hat off," she demanded.
"No way missy, a cowboy is nothin without his hat," countered Jimmy.
"I don't care, take it off," she said.
The three of them could hear some girl chatting.
"Sodoko is already at it," said the girl chatting with her friends.
"How long will this last," said another.
Ryan was getting ready to talk over to try to settle things calmly.
Then Jimmy heard his phone ring. "Hold on," making a stop sign with his hand on Sodoko.
"Hello? Mom? Speaker what?" He turned on the speaker immediately.
'Son are you giving a young lady a hard time?'
Jimmy was shaking nervously, "umm…?"
'Of course you were, I told you not to give young ladies a hard time, remember I brought you into this world I can surley take you out,' she warned.
Jimmy was literally shaking. Even Sodoko was shaking a bit, this woman was scary.
'Now son, what do you say?'
"My apologies miss, I shall put my hat in my locker," said Jimmy taking off his hat and hanging up his phone.
"Hey Jim, you attending here also?" asked Ryan.
"You folks are here too, this will be fun," said Jimmy.
"Come on let's see what classes you got," said Emma. They all headed back inside.
Sodoko went back to her post checking in all the students. Another boy was approaching, yet when Sodoko looked at him, he was handsome. "Name please?"
He was visibly shaking and was taking even a few steps back which confused Sodoko, "Archie Rogers," then she noticed his top button was unbuttoned. "Button that shirt, and straighten the tie!" Sodoko demanded.
"Sorry miss, please don't hurt me!" he buttoned his shirt and straightened his tie, then sped off into the building.
Sodoko was literally scratching her head. Then she began to hear a sound, it was getting closer but soon it became annoying causing her to cover her ears. It was Highland Cathedral but whoever was playing was messing up. She soon saw a giant approach standing at 6ft 5, a red beard with red hair. He stopped in front of her but kept playing.
"Could you stop playing that!" she yelled. He stopped playing.
"I can tell you enjoyed the pipes lassy," he said.
Sodoko decided to just get his name and musical instrument were allowed in certain parts of the school. "Name?"
"Bram Adair," he introduced.
"Go in," said Sodoko. He went inside and Sodoko noticed this was the last boy.
Tsuneo's House…
Tsuneo was in his study on his laptop going through emails, afterwards he decided to do some research into Ooarai Sensha-Do program. After a bit of research, he then glued his eyes to the screen. They barley had any tanks, Renta that sly bastard he thought.
Quickly reaching his cell phone, 'Hey Rogers, is that Pershing still there?'
'Yes sir,' said Rogers.
'Is it up for Sensha-Do standards?' asked Tsuneo.
'Almost sir,' answered Rogers.
'Good, I'm on my way to finish the final modifications myself,' said Tsuneo grabbing his keys and hanging up.
'I better call Jerome, Allen, Sarah, and ask permission to borrow a C-5 Galaxy,' he thought getting out the door.
Kuromorimine Girls Academy…
Shiho was sitting in her office, the first day of school, though this year would be the year that Kuromorimine would reclaim their prestige. The iron willed headmistress however was still shaken by her encounter with her ex-husband. She pulled her middle desk drawer out and dug into it until she pulled out an old picture. She looked at it, of herself and Tsuneo having ice cream together.
Over the years she believed she made the right decision kicking Tsuneo out, but still over the years she would think about her actions. Was she starting to regret it? No she did this for the sake of Sensha-Do and ultimately the Nishizumi style. For now she would not worry about her ex-husband, she had to make sure the team stay focused and not be distracted by anything, especially Maho, Tsuneo would only be a distraction right now to Maho.
She put the picture back into the drawer and then decided to look at the freshmen list for their Sensha-Do team.
Ooarai, Ryan's Classroom…
Ryan and Jimmy entered the classroom, "well this is it," said Ryan.
"Yep, our first day partner, first day in heaven," said Jimmy.
"Heaven?" wondered Ryan.
"Dude this is a girls Academy, and we're the only boys. We are going to get all the girls, any guy would kill for a chance like this," said Jimmy. Both remembered being in the hall and getting the eyes on them.
"Oh that," said Ryan.
"You don't seem that excited," said Jimmy.
"Don't get me wrong I like girls as much as the next guy, just not looking for a girlfriend right now," said Ryan.
"Ah!" said a familiar limey. Both guys turned and saw Archie.
"Archie, you're here too?" asked Ryan.
"You alright?" asked Jimmy. Both of them having some fights over the summer with him, but found he was a decent fellow. Though it still pondered the both of them, what was he shaking for.
"Good you two are here, I'll sit in that corner, Ryan you sit in front of me, you yank sit next to me," said Archie.
"Um sure, but what are you afraid of?" asked Ryan, though he began to suspect.
"They're everywhere, my dad tricked me," said Archie.
"They what?" asked Ryan.
Then they all heard the sound of bagpipes entering the classroom, a tall boy entered. He then approached them still playing the bagpipes.
"I can see ye boys love the pipes," he said.
He kept playing, "Shut those blasted pipes you brut!" said Archie.
"For once I agree the bagpipes suck," said Jimmy.
He stopped playing the pipes, "oh the limey and yank both lavvy heid, my skills are the we best," said Bram.
"I could outplay with my guitar any day," said Jimmy.
Neither of them back down from the tall Scottish boy and began to exchange banter.
"Um guys?" said Ryan.
"What?!" they all said looking at him.
"We're getting stares," stated Ryan.
They all looked to see they were surrounded by at least twenty girls just looking at them.
"Um, hi ladies," said Jimmy with a smile and waving.
"Good day lassies," said Bram.
Archie was nervous getting some many eyes on him.
"Hello," said Ryan.
"AHHHHH!" they all squealed lovingly.
"The rumors are true," said one.
"They are all in our class," said another.
"Boys, finally," said another girl.
'Oh great,' thought Ryan.
"Whoo wee, this will one fun year," said Jimmy.
Then the teacher walked in, "all right, everyone to your seats."
Later, Miho's Class…
The class was over as student began to leave for lunch. "Come on Miho, I'm starving," said Emma.
"Hai," said Miho getting up from her desk but knocked over some pens. She crawled under her desk to pick them up but hit one of the legs and knocked over more of her school utensils.
Emma went over to help Miho pick up some of her things.
"Hey new girls, want to grab some lunch," said a voice.
Both of them turned around to see a black haired and red haired girl looking at them making Miho jump.
"Look Saori, you scared Nishizumi," said the black haired girl.
"Oh sorry," said Saori.
"Would you both like to join us for lunch?" she offered.
"Sure," said Emma.
Cafeteria…
All the girls were in line, "You are Takebe Saori and you are Ishuzu Hana," said Miho.
"You know our names?" said Saori and amazement.
"I looked over the class list," said Miho.
"Miho," said Emma pouting, she had to admit, Emma's pouts were cute.
"This is Asuka Emma," said Miho.
"Nice to meet you Emma," said Hana.
"Can I call you both by your first name?" asked Saori.
"Sure," said Emma.
"Huh?" wondered Miho.
"She means Miho," said Hana.
"So cools, it's like we're friends," said Miho.
Miho and Emma then got there food, Teriyaki Salmon and Teriyaki chicken. Miho did a spin in excitement and almost fell. Saori managing to catch her.
"Don't lose your lunch Miho," said Emma.
They all sat down to enjoy a meal.
"So are there really boys in the school?" asked Saori.
"I believe there is," said Hana.
"Yes, one of them is my brother," said Emma.
"Really!" said Saori scooting closer to Emma, "what is he like."
"Well…" said Emma.
Then the double Cafeteria doors burst open. "come on yaw, let's get us some grub!" said Jimmy. All the boys walked in, while they didn't get the big warm reception they did in class. They were getting stares and I want you eyes. The girls in the cafeteria continued to eat and talk about the four boys.
"Brother!" called Emma, "come sit with us," she waved.
"Your bringing them here," said Saori.
The boys got there food and sat down with the girls giving introductions.
Emma, Saori, Jimmy, Ryan on one side. Bram, Archie, Miho, and Hana on the other.
Saori was blushing madly, she wanted to say more than her name. She wanted to ask one of them out.
"I must say Saori, from where I'm from you'd be a southern bell," said Jimmy.
"What does that mean?" she asked.
"It means your beautiful, and stop flirting Jimmy," said Emma.
"Oh come on Em, just paying the cute lady a compliment," said Jimmy.
"He says that to all the cute girls Saori, beware of him," warned Emma.
"Oh come on Em, don't ruin my fun," said Jimmy.
"So Miho, how was class?" asked Ryan.
Archie was shaking this whole time.
"It was great, I made new friends," said Miho.
"That's good," said Ryan taking a bite of some rice. "So Bram, are you from Scotland?"
"Aye," said Bram, "came in just a few days ago saw this was the only place still accepting applicants so I signed up."
"I notice you look strong Mr. Adair," said Hana.
"Thank you Hana, but please call me Bram. I participate in Scotland's Highland Games," said Bram.
"You mean those games held every spring and summer?" asked Emma.
"Correct, though I hope to participate in the real one, I do the junior events, the caber toss," said Bram.
"You mean that tree branch toss," said Jimmy.
"Yep the one, gotten 1st place, two 2nd places medals, and one 3rd," said Bram.
Miho was sitting with a smile with such new wonderful friends.
They all finished eating an then went to lockers to get textbooks for their next classes.
President's office…
That's her," said a dark figure.
"What about the boy?" asked another dark figure.
"We recruit him too," said the figure in the chair.
Ryan's Classroom…
Ryan was sitting his desk studying up a bit on the 1st chapter of his history class, English version of course. He was the only guy in this room, getting all the stares. He was hoping that these girls would not become ravenous like fan girls chasing the Beatles.
Then he started to here murmurs.
"Why is the student council here?" said one of the girls.
Ryan looked up to see three girls, the one that stood out the most was the short with pig tails. Then she began to walk towards him, "Hey Ryan, I'm Anzu president of the Student Council" she said.
"Yes? Is there something you need?" asked Ryan a bit confused on why the president out of the student council would want to talk to him.
"For you mandatory electives, take Sensha-Do," said Anzu.
"Hm? Isn't Sensha-Do for girls only," said a confused Ryan.
"Well they are allowing a few boys in our schools to participate this year," said Anzu.
"Why would I do that?" asked Ryan.
"Word is going around that you need credits," said Anzu.
"Really?" said Ryan. He was aware that Arrow Strike would not start matches until next spring at earliest and he needed the credits, what the heck, "very well," said Ryan.
"Excellent," said Anzu leaving.
Miho's Classroom…
Miho was in class with her new friends and Emma, "Miho I'm really a cursed girl," said Saori.
"That again?" said Hana.
"A lot of guys have been approaching me lately," said Saori. "They been saying hi and you're doing well today."
"Sounds like they just want to say hello," said Emma.
"They are just saying hi to you," said Hana.
"I bet they're in love with me," said Saori.
"Takebe, you're pretty lively and approachable," said Miho. "That's why everyone wants to be your friend. I think it's amazing you can get along with anyone. "You Hana seem to be so really grown up."
"Ah, people say I'm too uptight," said Hana.
"I think you both are beautiful and wonderful people," said Emma. "Your flower arrangement sounds graceful and pretty."
"Thank you both for becoming my friends," said Miho.
Then the student council walked in causing murmurs and talk wondering why they were here. The one known as Mom pointed toward Miho. Anzu began to walked towards Miho, "hey Nishizumi."
"Yes? Um… said Miho.
"We need to talk," said Momo.
"Eh?" wondered Miho.
"For your mandatory elective, take Sensha-Do. Thanks." Said Anzu.
"Huh? I thought this school didn't have Sensha-Do," said Miho.
"We've restarted our Sensha-Do program," said Momo.
"I transferred here specifically because I thought this school didn't have Sensha-Do," said Miho.
"Sounds like fate to me," said Anzu.
"Sensha-do here?" said Emma, "can I join!"
"Why not, the more the merrier," said Anzu. "Anyways thanks." Anzu left with the student council.
After they left Miho looked like she lost her will. Emma and her friends became worried.
During class Miho looked sickly to the teacher and got sent to the nurses office. Hana, Saori, and Emma faked sicknesses and went with Miho.
They all laid in some beds, all of them concerned began to whisper. "Miho, if you leave school early, I'll bring your bag," said Hana.
"Should I call my Dad Miho?" asked Emma.
"No, that won't be necessary," said Miho.
"What did the student council tell you anyway?' asked Saori.
"Tell us," said Hana.
"She said they're bringing back Sensha-Do this year," said Miho.
"Oh right, forgot about that," said Emma.
"She wants me to choose it as an elective," said Miho.
"Huh? Why?" wondered Saori.
"She went out of her way to make you choose Sensha-Do," said Hana.
"Emma, Miho are you both ok?" said Ryan just coming in.
"Ryan, what are you doing here?" asked Emma, "and where the nurse?"
"She went out for a minute, now are you both ok?" asked Ryan.
"I'm ok brother it's Miho, I only faked my condition out of concern for Miho," said Emma.
"I see, what going on?" asked Ryan.
"She's getting bullied into doing Sensha-Do," said Saori.
Ryan clenched one of his fist, "I will not tolerate bullies I don't care who she is,"
"Why does she want Miho?" asked Hana.
"The Nishizumi family has a good history of tanking," said Ryan finding that out over the summer.
"I never really have a lot of good experiences with tanks, I came to this school to avoid tanks," said Miho.
"Miho, you go ahead and go home early, it's only the first day of school," said Ryan. "I'll take Sensha-Do."
"What?" said Miho, "but boys are not…"
"They say they are allowing a few boys, don't know why," said Ryan.
"So will I brother," said Emma.
"Miho are you going to refuse?" asked Hana.
"Hai," said Miho.
"Then me and Saori will go with you," said Hana.
"Count me in," said Emma.
"I'll be there as well," said Ryan.
Miho was surprised at all the support she was getting, "thank you."
"Now you just go home early, me and Emma will handle your school stuff," said Ryan.
Miho's Dorm…
Miho took the suggestion and went home early, sitting at her desk. She got on her laptop and began working on a paper that was given out on the first day, she had two weeks but better to start now than later. Then she noticed her father was online, she decided to face time, she needed someone to talk to.
She clicked the facetime feature, a moment later Tsuneo was on the screen, "Hello Miho, your home early, something happen?"
"I felt a bit ill," said Miho.
"What, are you alright? Doo you need me to come?" said Tsuneo concerned.
"No, I'll be fine it's just something that happened today," said Miho.
"Tell me," said Tsuneo.
"Ooarai is restarting their Sensha-Do program and the student council asked me to join," said Miho.
"Hm, I see, and you do not wish to comply, are they pressuring you, do you need me to come?" he asked.
"No, it's just that I am moving towards Arrow Strike and do not wish to do Sensha-Do again after last time, I do not want to go through that again," said Miho.
"Miho, I want to be straight with you. I think you should do Sensha-Do again, it in your blood," said Tsuneo.
Miho began to look down thinking she was going to be forced to do Sensha-Do, "However it is my opinion," began Tsuneo. Miho made direct eye contact with her father on the screen.
"I really want you to do Sensha-Do again, but I will not force you because your heart would not be in it. It would not be the same as if you were doing it of your own free will. Miho I am proud of the progress you made with getting your license. Whether you do Arrow Strike or Sensha-Do I love you all the same and will support you no matter which path you pick. I'll be at your side always," said Tsuneo speaking from his heart.
"Otou-san," said Miho a small tear dripping down her cheek.
"Miho, was it something I said?" said a worried Tsuneo.
"No, it not because I'm sad Otou-san," said Miho.
"Oh, I see," said Tsuneo realizing it was a tear of joy.
"Thank you Otou-san," said Miho, then remembering Ryan, "Otou-san, Ryan and Emma are participating."
"I see that Ryan is getting his credits and Emma hopefully has found something, Miho sine you not doing Sensha-Do, the least you could do is help Ryan and Emma, can you do that for me?" asked Tsuneo.
"Hai, Otou-san," said Miho.
"Thank you Miho, now if they continue to try to force you, let me know. I'm here if you need me. I love you Miho," said Tsuneo.
"Love you too, Otou-san," said Miho.
Tsuneo ended the face time.
Miho had some relief, then the door opened.
"Miho are you doing alright," said a worried Emma with Ryan coming in.
"Here's your bag Miho," said Ryan handing it over.
"Thank you Ryan," said Miho.
"No problem," said Ryan.
"Anything happen?" asked Miho.
"We were called into the gym and they gave a presentation of Sensha-Do," said Emma.
"Saori and Hana said they were going to sign up," said Emma.
"Jimmy said he's joining as well, knowing him he will break the track" said Ryan.
Miho laughed a bit knowing that was true. She had made her decision. Later they had dinner and did some homework together.
Ooarai…
The next day it was time to pick electives. While Hana and Saori did try to convince Miho to join them. Both of them sat across from Miho. "I can't," said Miho choosing to incense on her sheet instead.
"Got it," said Saori.
"Sorry to make you worry," said Hana. Both girls circled incense instead.
"Huh?" said a confused Miho.
"We'll pick the same thing as you," said Saori.
"No you two pick Sensha-do," said Miho not wanting her new friends to move away from what they wanted.
"It's fine, we want to be with you" said Saori.
"Besides, if we do Sensha-Do, you might start thinking about things you don't want to remember, right?" said Hana.
Emma at this point walked in with her sheet circled Sensha-Do, "Oh, I'm going to miss all of you," said Emma, "but I understand Miho."
Miho could only smile.
Cafeteria…
They were all gathered with friends eating lunch together except Archie who did not come to school today. Present were Miho, Hana, Saori, Emma, Ryan, Jimmy, and Bram.
The chatter of Sensha-Do filled the entire cafeteria. Saori trying to get Miho's mind off Sensha-Do, "Want to get some sweet potatoes ice cream after school?"
"Ooarai is famous for its sweet potatoes," said Hana.
"Really, that's sounds delicious," said Emma, "Can we brother?"
"Sure why not," said Ryan.
"Hey folks excuse me, some ladies are calling me," said Jimmy leaving to talk to more girls.
Then the intercom came on, "Standard Class I, 2-A, Nishizumi Miho, Come to the student council room immediately," it announced.
They all started up.
Student Council Room…
Miho was holding hands with Hana and Saori with Ryan and Emma standing in front of Miho protectively.
Momo pulled out Miho's elective paper with Anzu sitting in her desk behind Momo and Yuzu on the side. "What is this about?"
"Why did you choose that?" asked Anzu like some crime boss.
"There's almost no one with Sensha-Do experience in our school," said Momo.
"We're finished, our school is finished," said Yuzu panicked.
"Don't be do selfish," said Saori.
"That's right," said Hana.
"You should all take a hike," said Emma.
"Listen, she does not want to do Sensha-Do, if it's a commander your looking for, I'll gladly lead the team if that's what it takes," said Ryan.
Miho was surprised that her half-brother would go this far, it made her happy.
"Mr. Asuka, you're a pilot," said Momo.
"True, but I am your last option," said Ryan.
"You're trying to force her," said Hana.
"She is not going to do Sensha-do," said Saori.
"Please give up on Nishizumi," said Hana.
"I could make all of your lives really hard you know," threatened Anzu.
"I can't believe your threatening us," said Hana.
"We won't give in to blackmail," said Emma.
"Oh that's it you little leprechaun!" said Ryan beginning to lose his patience. "You are all abusing your power."
"You need to calm down Mr. Asuka," said Momo.
"Or what!?" challenged Ryan, "continue and we will transfer to another school."
"You will not," said Momo.
"Oh I'm shaking in my uniform," said Ryan.
Miho was standing there as they were all defending her. 'They are all trying to defend me, they are doing all this for me," thought Miho as the arguing continued. Miho was caught between the past and the present as the arguing began to heat up more and more. Then taking a deep breath, "I'll!"
This caused the arguing to stop as everyone eyes were on Miho. "I'll do Sensha-Do!"
"What!" said Emma, Ryan, Saori, and Hana at once.
"That's great!" said Yuzu.
Anzu and Momo only grinned.
"You sure about this Miho?" asked Ryan.
"I'm sure," said Miho.
"Ok, so now I have this question, how many tanks do we have?" asked Ryan.
"Well…" said Anzu.
Tank Garage, Next Day…
A big group of students stood in front of the garage as the big door opened inside was a ruined Panzer IV tank with a short barrel. "You mean this is all we got!" exclaimed Ryan.
