Nebulizer
"Come on, just let me ease this on you…"
Winry wasn't even sure that he could hear her. Winry wasn't sure what he could hear at all. The whole situation was unreal, and she wasn't the slightest bit sure what to make of it. Winry was just glad that she had Granny to rely on, although she did wonder how Granny was making it through this too.
Winry bit her lip as she tried to slip the mask onto Ed's face. She tried to position it, covering his mouth and nose and getting as good a seal as she could. She almost had it when he gasped and jerked his head, as if trying to get away from her and the mask. It shifted out of place.
Winry let out a little noise of despair, but then screwed up her determination. She was going to do this. She was going to get Edward to take his medicine—whether he was aware of it or not.
There wasn't much that Winry could do for Ed right now. It had only been a couple of days since Al, now a living suit of armor, had showed up at their door, carrying Ed in his arms. There had been blood everywhere, and Edward had been unconscious. Winry had been horrified and terrified at the sight. Al's voice coming from a huge suit of armor, the one that had belonged to their father, the blood all over him, Ed missing an arm and a leg and bleeding even with the hastily tied bandages—Winry had wanted to scream, pass out, something.
Fortunately, Granny had been there. Granny had snapped out orders, told both her and Alphonse what to do. She had told Winry to prepare the surgery, gotten Al to bring Ed inside. Winry had heard her curse, and then Granny had given her more orders on what to do. Winry had done everything that she had said to, and within minutes Al was laying Ed on the bed in the surgery, Granny was gowning up, and instructing Winry too as well. After that, Winry had assisted Granny in doing everything they could to stop the bleeding and close up the wounds where Ed's limbs had been severed.
It was only because of Granny that Winry had been able to do anything at all that night. But now Winry was doing everything that she knew how, without Granny by her side. Granny still told her what to do, gave her the schedule and made the decisions, but Winry was able to do things on her own.
Like this. Ed had gotten a fever, likely from the infections his missing limbs seemed to have, and he wasn't able to swallow the medicines that would help. Granny had long ago taught Winry how to use the nebulizer. She could use it to get the much-needed medicines to Ed. The problem was, Ed was stubborn even when he wasn't with it, and he didn't like the mask he needed to wear.
Well tough cookies! Winry was going to make him take it anyway!
Once again, she set her mind to it, and, with trail, error, and a lot of patience, Winry managed to get the mask onto Edward and tightened into place. It had a pretty good seal on it, and with the mask secure, she turned the nebulizer on. This electric one was much better than the old manual one they used to have.
Although, the manual one had left her something to do. The electric one didn't leave her much to do, except to sit by Ed's bedside and watch. Hopefully the nebulizer would get him the medicine he needed. Hopefully he didn't try to fight the nebulizer. Hopefully he breathed it all in. Hopefully everything was alright on the inside too.
Winry didn't know. But she did know that she could sit here, by his side, while his nebulizer helped to give him some much needed medicine and pray that it worked.
