Entry 8: Volt Nymphs
Vince spent a long time looking at the yellow water with the lightning bolts zipping across the surface. It looked like all the sparks were dancing. Around it, a few bundles of short yellow grass with very weird-looking, exaggerated flowers growing from them. Around them, lifeless metals. Mainly shiny yellow metal that, no, was not gold.
"So... is it water?" He asked a yellow-colored Nymph with long hair that stuck up at seemingly random spots.
"HAHA, yeah!"
"But it's also... 'liquid electricity?' I'm not a scientist, but I know that doesn't make any sense."
"Uh... no! Not really? It's water, that's really electrical."
"Oh, okay, good. So... what makes it electrical all the time? The plants?"
"Yeah, the plants feed the water with that stuff and carry it through stone. You take water out, you're just left with normal H-2-O water!"
Vince sighed. "Okay."
"But also there's little pockets of Liquid Electricity that can power it up."
"GAAHH! But that doesn't make any- how can electrcity also be a liquid- what the..."
She shrugged. "We don't really get it either, but we roll with it. I mean, how is gold stronger than iron? A couple of scientists say that it shouldn't at a molecular level, yet here we are!"
"THAT'S ANOTHER THING THAT-"
"CANNONBALL!" Sonata shouted, running past the both of them and diving in to the electrified pond.
Screaming, Vince jumped back for obvious reasons. The splashback. The Volt Nymph on the other stand stayed where she stood, got splashed, and got shocked, which was a pleasant charge.
Vince stepped up and glared down at her. "H-how did you-"
"I invented a new potion!" Sonata replied. She held up a bottle, rounded and with a beige liquid inside. "Rubberskin Potion! Keeps you immune to being shocked by the Volts! Might even keep you safe from being struck by lightning!" Sadly, it won't work against the Martians, just pointing that out right now This mini-story takes place way before they would become an issue, though.
"...How did you test it with this?!" Vince asked.
"Oh, this is the test. Yeah." Sonata paused. "Thank Pan it's working. So, wanna drink it and swim with me?"
"HAH I REALLY LIKE YOUR STYLE, BOSS! YEAH!" The Volt Nymph cried, diving in with her.
Vince just stood by the shore and took a step back. "Um... if it's not human-tested, then no."
Volt Nymphs.
Carrying the might of a storm, these master electritians swiftly disprove the saying of lightning never striking the same place twice.
Preferred Environment: Volt Lakes/Voltages/Lightning Clouds. (Also has ties with thunderstorms.)
Environment Threat Level: Severe.
Environment Stats: Extremely Dry. Temperate. Fantastic. Semi-Rare. Lightning Clouds are a type of Floating Island with clouds that are always charged with electricity; Volt Lakes are sections deep underground, along the magma layer, with water that is highly electrically charged; Voltages are what happens when the stone or clouds from either of the previous biomes are brought to a surface level, they are artificial similar to Surface Mushroom Forests.
Other Names: Lightning Nymphs, Electric Nymphs, Storm Nymphs.
Affinity: Wind.
Color: Bright Yellow.
Traditional Costume Weapon: Cackling charged sparks, some times around their arms and legs, but many of them have a large amount of electricity on their chests forming a lightning bolt symbol. This "bolt" typically goes between their breasts/pecs. This lets them shoot letting. And charge electronics.
Vince's Comment: Yeah, no, not gonna bother getting on any of their badsides. With Fulgra though that's a pretty difficult feat. NOT getting on her bad side, the difficult feat, to be clear. Anyway, they can't just shoot lightning from their fingers, but they might as well be able to. I don't like being zapped. Probably one of the most dangerous of the "elements." Although Tania keeps telling me they're not "elements." Actually, so does Sonata. Firmly. If Sonata's offended that Nymphs aren't a type of "Elementals" I should probably perk up my ears and listen because wow.
Sonata's Comment: The only good part about a thunderstorm if I'm being honest, these ladies and gentlemen like to come out and be lightning rods. For their own energy and for the entertainment of anybody that wants to watch on. I just like seeing the shows they perform. Also, they can redirect lightning! Apparently, I can too? I want to learn how, but most of them just want to show me the dance move to do it, not a live demonstration. Fulgra's the only one I know crazy enough to throw lightning at me (well, that doesn't just want to kill me, but I need this in a controlled environment), but she's having trouble finding a source to throw at me. Because nobody else wanted to give her one. Figures.
Tania's Comment: Volt Nymphs.
Nymphae Fulmin.
The Voltage is one of the more fascinating environments out there. It is one of the few nature regions that exists in both the skies and the caverns naturally. The Nymphs are similarly divided by those who reside in the Voltage-charged clouds above and those who take to the electrical lakes below, two tribes of sky and earth. Regardless, Volt Nymphs of the caverns still share the affinity for high areas as their sky-living counterparts, their bodies lighter on average to assist with agile movement. Why is one of the mysteries of Nymphs. Ironically, Volt Clouds are typically flat floating islands, too high up for them to jump to from the earth, so the sky side has little purpose for great height. And the lakes of concentrated electrified water tend to be surrounded by flat land or smooth hills. It may be one of the few traits of any Nymphs that are vestigial.
It is also believed that the Martian military force we had fought against studied this biome and used it to shape their weapons. I do not believe I know enough to weigh in on whether this is a sound theory or not.
Closing AN:
If there's one of these madeup biomes I'd like to actually see in a mod, it's probably this one. I'm a sucker for trying to make a biome themed around electricity that's not just a desert. (As I already did in Run: .GIFocalypse...)
Also, something something Yellow Pikmin. And yeah, this and Magma Nymphs are two of the first three Variants we'll meet in Romacing the Last Dryad, because it's a super corny Pikmin reference. With that in mind, you can probably guess what the third one is once we reach that one.
