Entry 9: Tropical Nymphs

Beginning AN:

Music for this chapter: Perplexing Pool, Pikmin 2. And yeah, two chapters in a row where I mention Pikmin in some way. Look at my username and deal with it.

Also, I went back and fixed up the Introduction a bit. I elaborated on some things, made it clear that the second time "900" was mentioned it was other biomes, it made it sound like Sonata was saying there were "only" 900 total Variants. I also added a "template" description that explains some stuff, like what the heck "Moderate" or "Fantastic" mean.

Sonata was swimming in shallow, clear, warm beach water trying to sink her teeth in to any fish she saw, basically giving Vince time to himself on the shore to look at the rocks of his latest potential-allies. He gulped, still a bit nervous about the whole thing.

"So... you..." He tried to begin. He tried to scratch his chest through his Gold Armor, failing for obvious reasons.

The one sitting on the rock closest to him giggled, flipping her wet hair back, yellow-green body glistening in the sunlight. "You can take it off if you want to, we're harmless."

"Yeah... sorry, but that's what they all say, unless they tell me right away that they want Sonata and I dead, which, yeah, I believe that."

"We healed you. We even bandaged you, which is something we wouldn't do for ourselves. Why would we go through all that trouble when we could just eat you now...?"

"Uh... right... yeah..."

He turned and coughed.

"Sorry I'm bad at this when Sonata's not around to act as a buffer. I mean, she is around, she's just..."

Thankfully for him, she finally emerged from the water - with a weird-looking blue fish in her teeth. Its appearance made him flinch - it kinda looked like one of those things in the Jungle that jumped after him. Those motherfuckers were really-

"Vihhsse looch!" She said with the fish still in her mouth. "I haught hwone!"

Sonata turned to the sky, letting the fish go up, and she opened her mouth very wide. Almost Lindsey-levels of-

No. Vince still did not want to think about her.

But yeah Sonata swallowed the Derpfish with one gulp. Then she put her hands on her hips.

"I don't see why you're complaining so much about Sammy's quests. Fishing is easy." She said.

"It's not just that it's- I mean- he's an asshole. I don't like taking orders from him."

"You're gonna have to get used to taking orders if you're gonna join the Naked Empire. At a certain point, I'm gonna outrank you. And speaking of Naked Empire negotiations..." She slowly turned to the Tropical Nymphs with a sly look on her face.

All of them stared at her like she just did something horrible. "Uh..." the one speaking to Vince said. "Did you just swallow that Derpfish without killing it?"

"Don't tell me you're animal rights activists. How can you even live here and be one? The fish look - and are - so tasty!"

"Those things can drain your blood from the inside out. They're basically giant flea monsters."

Sonata frowned. "I'm a Nymph, so-"

"They can even do that to Nymphs."

"...Fuck."

Tropical Nymphs.

From warm air lies a cold-hearted type of Nymph, using bright flamboyant shows and attracting songs to lure their targets in to the depths of their heated forests.

Preferred Environment: Temperate Forest. (Some of them may live out in the Jungles; see Dryad's entry for more information about the Jungles.)

Environment Threat Level: Moderate.

Environment Stats: Hot. Wet. Mundane. Common. Warm forests usually neighboring Jungles or other hot environments, forests that seem to be in "perpetual summer" so to speak.

Other Names: Summer Nymphs, Beach Nymphs (not to be confused with Ocean Nymphs), Island Nymphs, "Jungle Nymphs," (erroniously) "Warm Forest" Nymphs (this is technically correct but it is a rather odd name).

Affinity: Fire.

Color: Bright Chartreuse.

Traditional Costume Weapon: A leaf on the side of each hip, vines around the legs. Allows commanding "tropical" plants and limited communication with "tropical" fish.

Vince's Comment: These Nymphs saved my life multiple times! I first met some of them in the Jungle, I thought they would be as terrible as the monsters lurking in there (those turtles, man), but no, they've been some of the most helpful and generous I've met! Great healers! Also, their pet fish are nice to look at.

Sonata's Comment: Best place to sunbathe. Hands down. Also, I don't know why they're so fond of the Jungle next to Dual Nymphs. Because fuck the Jungle.

Tania's Comment: Tropical Nymphs.
Nymphae Tropicus.
COUSINS! Biologically- sorry. I got excited, typically Nymphs in the "green range" are the ones closest to me in terms of environment and behavior. Historically, this type has been the kind that helped give Nymphs the stereotype of being one and the same with... "Sirens." That they sit on rocks and lure people in with their singing. That is not the most appropriate type of Nymph seen doing that, but we will get to that. Their common habitant is, unsurprisingly, the type of deserted islands usually seen in your entertainment. Smaller than the island our adventure had been on, enough to only house its own warm sea-proxy palm regions as its main habitat. They are unsurprisingly close cousins of the aquatic Nymph races, typically bordering their homes. They like growing coconuts.
...I can already tell this next stretch of entries will be difficult for me to write on an emotional level. I apologise in advance for any future unprofessionalism. (Note from Vince: What do you mean, "unprofessional?" Sonata and I have set the bar really low. Anything you say sounds Shakespearean compared to us.)

Closing AN:

And that's Day 3!

Also get used to "fuck the Jungle." I... wish I had more to say about this, being a "Day Finale" and all, but I don't really... compared to the first canon-game biome (again, not counting Oreads) and the electrical idea I like, this is kind of a "meh" note to end a day on... originally these were gonna pretty much be "Jungle Nymphs" but I decided for a few reasons that wouldn't make much sense later on.

Also, just getting this out of the way now and I might move this to the Intro's notes, but there are not ("natural," but I'm getting way ahead of myself) Nymphs of the following: the Pillars, the Evil Biomes, the Hallow, or Candyland. There will likely be Nymphs of Granite and Marble Caves. I'm unsure of there being Nymphs on bee hives, since they're so strongly connected to the Jungle, and oasises, just... I don't know. Oasis Nymphs are way more likely than Bee Hive Nymphs though. Technically Oreads can be considered "Dungeon Nymphs" too, in fact I might even rewrite the Intro (again) pretty soon to cover that...

Oh yeah, and every single biome listed here (except Hell and the Caverns, and possibly the vanilla Forests that the Dryads will be associated with to an extent) has an underground or surface counterpart, even if it's one that, hypothetically in game, you'd have to make, again like Glowing Mushroom. And yeah, this goes without saying, but there are not seperate Nymph types for surface/underground biomes, IE Desert Nymphs cover both the Surface Desert and Underground Desert. I probably didn't make this clear in the lore of Teasers or this, but while Oreads are associated with caves, the Variants can be both above ground or below ground. Again, pretending these are modded enemies, you could encounter them on the surface (they'd also be common enemies at least in Hardmode), just more rarely than in the underground.
