Entry 12: Deepwood Nymphs
Vince and Sonata stopped walking a few steps in to the exceptionally thick forest, and not because of the howling that happened to be heard. They both turned back.
"Are you sure you want to do this, Tania?" Vince asked.
"Yeah are you sure?!" Sonata added on to that.
She caught up with them moments later. The Last Dryad. Jungle vines around her arms and legs, the legs in question and most of what was above them obscured by a skirt made of large leaves that went down to her ankles. She was topless, but as far as Sonata cared, her ass was covered.
"This is the place you met her?" She asked them.
"Yep! And where we took out the Eye! Anyway, Arborea's gonna move in with us soon, but right bef-"
Then a green blur whisked by. The trio all got their weapons at the ready: Vince taking his newly-made Demon Bow (for a weapon with a name like that, it was surprisingly shitty in the long run, but Vnce didn't know that at the time), Sonata with her Light's Bane, while Tania held one hand out. In her other, a staff of sorts began to form from vines that grew out of her fingers.
Standing before them all was a familiar green Nymph, long hair, blowing in the wind, determined look on her face.
Sonata dropped her sword. "WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT! That's not some random attacker! That's Arborea! Arborea, guess what, after we killed the Eye, we met her! The- the Dryad!"
"What the hell, guys?!" Arborea shouted. "I thought you were on our side when you destroyed the Eye! But you're teaming up with... her?!"
"Wait! I'm on your-"
That was all Arborea said, and all Tania could get to say, before the former went right for the throat. The twigs around her right arm grew and coated over it, forming an arm covering with a giant trio of claws at the end, while she ran after Tania. Gritting her teeth, Tania met Arborea's blade with clashes from her own staff. A few hits deflected, Arborea then lept in the air and rolled over her, swinging her wood scythe to the ground, scarring the land below them.
Finally, after a bit of the Deepwood Nymph dodging around her, Tania pointed the staff in her general direction and fired.
A burst came forth from it, Arborea narrowly avoidng it. One that tore holes in the trees in its path, a burst of a powerful green glow. A Life Nature Bolt, Level 1.
They were both about to rush at each other, but then Sonata stepped in. She used her bare hand to grab the wooden scythe, while her sword clashed with Tania's staff.
"WAIT!" She shouted. "Pan, I did NOT think I'd ever have to play the role of the sane peacekeeper, but SHEESH! We're all on the same side! Arborea, you are my friend now! Tania, I'd also want you to be my friend! BOTH can happen! Let's talk this out first!"
Both of the green-haired nature warriors - RELUCANTLY - stepped back and put their weapons on the ground.
"I think I know what would help." Said Vince. "An egg timer. I heard a line in a show? An egg timer and a chore wheel - no, that was about roommates."
"Oh yeah I saw that episode of King of the Hill." Sonata added.
Deepwood Nymphs.
The lost woods of Terraria, holding an abundance of assassins that deeply hold to their traditions of the thick forests. They are mistaken for Dryads, often the last mistake a person will make.
Preferred Environment: Deep Woods.
Environment Threat Level: Dangerous.
Environment Stats: Average rainfall/wetness. Cool. Moderate on the fantastic-mundane scale. Uncommon. "Thick" forests made of dense trees, typically blocking out some sunlight.
Other Names: Wood Nymphs, Tree Nymphs, "Forest Nymphs," "Underground Forest Nymphs" (there is some overlap between Underground Deepwoods and very rare, usually artificial, underground forests).
Affinity: Water.
Color: Bright Green.
Traditional Costume Weapon: Branches around their arms and legs, allows them to command wood. To a lesser extent, other plantlife.
Vince's Description: One of the first types of Nymphs I met that wasn't someone moving in to Sonata's... "fortress." They scared the shit out of me. Honestly, I don't know where the stereotype of ANY sort of nymphic creature being "peaceful and benevolent and kindhearted and sweet" came from, especially the ones in a "forest." These are freakin' ninja, their speed and stealth are both incredible.
Sonata's Description: Protip: You should really work out if you wanna impress these sorts of Nymphs. Or really, work out in general to be healthy. (For all types of Nymphs, working out also increases ass size! I can get myself a nice fat CAKE! :D Well FATTER than mine already is, I've got that ass no matter what.) But they are fond of the physically fit. People who can go through their obstacle courses.
Tania's Description: Deepwood Nymphs.
Nymphae Lignum.
Ah... my closest cousins of all, and yet... alas... these Nymphs are also the unofficial type tied to the neutral forests that our kind watched over, and yet, they go over quantity rather than the quality of the environment. Namely, the more trees, the less it is "Dryad Territory," and the more it is their own territory. Deepwood Nymphs find solidarity in density, and I can relate to their connection more than I can with any other variant, they feel as though the bark in the tree is their bones.
...I could walk in to a pun with that one. Bark? Bones? ...There's a dog joke in there, and the moment someone says it, I will be filled with regret and shame.
Closing AN:
Day 4, done! First time Tania appeared in a story (I mean, from how she was namedropped in the Nuclear Nymph one, that one's set after the gang met her, but she wasn't there to just kind of... "keep with the theme" until this sorta-"special" chapter). Sadly, it'll be the last for a little bit, but once she shows up in the stories again she's here to stay. I will say right now that Romancing the Last Dryad won't be like that; when she appears, she's staying. And I managed, hey, let's throw a King of the Hill reference to the Dryad's first proper appearance. Make this "extra-me." And just like King of the Hill existing as-is in my Gravity Falls fic-verses instead of using that running gag of having a legal-friendly counterpart (I made one for Pikmin, just called Carrot Ants), probably the second-most important rule to this beyond the Nymphs not wearing clothes thing: King of the Hill is a universal constant.
I know I just said this story could use more horny and this chapter pretty much lacked that, but... I think this could be an exception, sort of. It's kind of a "serious chapter." I don't know, I'll see later. There will definitely be actual fanservice with the Deepwood Nymphs (not even in RTLD proper, in this), even if I don't rewrite this chapter's mini-story specifically.
Fun fact in... I think the first-ever planned story outline of this, or at least the first I've written, they were the first Variant met (not counting Oreads), and then after that it was the Tundra Nymphs (we'll get to them in two days). Now, well, again, it's the RYB trio even though I personally hate the RYB color model.
Yeah Terraria's "Forest' biome isn't very... "foresty." So I whipped up this "dense forest" thing to feel more, well yeah, like a big "forest" forest. Blah that's hard to explain.
Also shoot, for Day 5 I should edit he Intro (again...) to actually describe Vince and Sonata in more detail...
