Chapter 3

The next day, Penny took their daughter to the supermarket to do a little grocery shopping while Leonard and William continued working on the treehouse by the backyard. The treehouse was already done and only needed some last finishing touches of paint and other stuff like curtains and Buster's elevator/basket. Leonard was glad the treehouse held up the first time he went up on it, he thought that if it could take his weight, then it must be safe for his kids.

"What do you say we paint this whole thing first?" said Leonard.

"Okay dad." said William. "I'm gonna get the paint brushes."

"Alright, I'll get the paint and the ladder ready." Leonard said as he opened one of the paint cans and started stirring it.

After ten minutes, Leonard and his son started painting the treehouse with a shade of green, hoping that Sarah would find it agreeable.

"So I guess you want to find out about your grandparents huh?" said Leonard, hoping to keep the conversation light for the young man.

"How come we've never heard you talk about them? I mean, I don't even know their names to begin with." said William.

"My dad's name is Alfred and your grandmother's name is Beverly. He's and anthropologist and mom's a neuroscientist and psychiatrist." said Leonard.

"I guess that's the reason you became a scientist huh?" said William.

"You could say that...I've always been interested in math and science when I was your age." Leonard said before continuing. "But our family was not your 'typical normal' family…" he said.

"What do you mean dad?" William said.

Leonard sighed and gave his son a weak smile. "Okay, I want you to keep an open mind because what I'm about to say might bother you." he said to his son.

William looked at his father and nodded. "Okay dad." said the young man.

"My mom...your grandmother isn't like your mother or any other mother that I've met...she's more interested with our accomplishments and achievements rather than just raising us the normal way like what your mom and I are doing with you and your sister. I know it sounds strange but that's how she raised me and my brother and sister." said Leonard.

"I have and aunt and an uncle?" asked William.

"Yeah, Michael and Catherine. I'm the youngest." said Leonard.

"I still don't understand." said William.

"Well...how about this...I never celebrated my birthday because mom never bothered to throw a birthday party for me." said Leonard.

"Really? You never celebrated your birthday when you were a kid?" asked William.

Leonard nodded, giving his son a weak smile. "She only says she's proud of us whenever we did good with our grades in school and stuff." he said.

"Really?" William said.

Leonard smiled and lightly ruffled his son's hair. "Yes son...at least your mom always showers you both with hugs and kisses huh?" he said.

"Yeah...but sometimes, it's a little too much." said William, making his father laugh. "What about grandpa?" he asked.

"Well, your grandpa was more agreeable...he didn't perform experiments on me when I was a child." Leonard said.

William stopped what he was doing and looked at his father. "Grandma did experiments on you? What kind of experiments?"

Leonard nodded. "Yeah...mostly behavioral and psychological experiments. She would then publish her findings in her books." said Leonard. "I know it sounds cruel but it was her way of raising us...with scientific observations."

"Why would she do that? Did she even tell you she loves you or proud of you?" asked William.

"Only when I got good grades at school...or when I come up with a good term paper or something." said Leonard.

"So...the way that you're raising me and my sister is the exact opposite of how you were raised by your parents?" William said.

Leonard nodded, knowing that his son already had an idea of the whole picture. "That's basically it buddy...and that's part of the reason why I didn't tell you about my parents, especially your grandma."

"She sounds like a scary person." said William, making Leonard laugh a little.

"I guess...it's just a matter of getting used to her." said Leonard.

"Well, if it makes you feel any better, I think you and mom are doing great by us." said the young man.

Leonard was touched and tapped his son's shoulder. "Thanks buddy, that means a lot to me and your mom."

"It's true dad, I'm glad that you and mom are our parents." William said.

"Well, your mom and I had to step it up now that you and sister are growing up so fast, especially now that she's developing her own 'personality'." Leonard said, making William laugh a little.

"She's like The Hulk dad...one day she's as calm as a cucumber and the next she's like a tasmanian devil that can tear your head off." said William, making Leonard laugh out loud.

"That's funny!" Leonard said.

"Mom could have dialed down on giving her attitude." William added as they returned to painting the treehouse.

"I know buddy, imagine how challenging it is for me to have to deal with both of them." Leonard said.

"You should be a monk or something dad." William said, making his father laugh.

"Maybe…" said Leonard. "Hey...if your grandma happens to pass by California...do you want to meet her?" he asked the young man.

"Do you think she would perform experiments on me and Sarah too?" William asked, a little apprehensive.

"Son, I promise I won't let anyone hurt you or your sister, much less your grandma." said Leonard.

William thought for a while and nodded. "Okay dad...I want to meet grandma, at least for once." he said.

"Okay buddy...now what do you say we finish up here before your sister comes back and yell at us for ruining her treehouse." said Leonard, making the young man laugh.

"I'm gonna run for cover when she arrives." said William.

"Count me in!" said Leonard, giving his son a high five before going back and finishing up the treehouse. They were done after half an hour and decided to clean up and let the paint dry down, feeling good about a job well done with a few paint smudges on their face and arms.

Leonard and William was at the living room watching TV when Penny and Sarah came through the front door, carrying a couple bags of groceries.

"We're home!" Penny said as William stood up to take one of the paper bags from his mother. "Thanks sweetie, bring it to the kitchen, will you?" she said.

"Looks like you guys had fun huh?" said Leonard.

"We passed by the ice cream place daddy!" Sarah said.

"What flavor did you get?" Leonard asked his daughter.

"I got a Rocky Road daddy." Sarah said. "Are you and William done with the treehouse?"

"Why don't you see for yourself?" said Leonard as Sarah hurriedly ran to the backyard. They then heard the young lady scream and cry upon seeing the treehouse painted green instead of pink like she wanted. The couple ran to find out why Sarah was crying.

"What happened?" Penny asked.

"They didn't paint it like what I wanted!" Sarah said, wiping her tears while Buster stood beside his sister, trying to console her.

"What do you mean? It looks very nice!" said Penny as William joined them in the backyard.

"But I wanted pink mommy…and lots of rainbows and flowers!" said the young lady while continuing to cry.

Leonard knelt down and hugged his daughter. "I'm so sorry honey...but you and your brother are gonna have to share this treehouse so I decided to use a neutral color." he said while trying to comfort the little princess.

"You always take his side!" Sarah yelled.

Leonard sighed. "Okay how about this...why don't we put your rainbows and flowers on your half of the treehouse and your brother can do whatever he wants with his half." he said, hoping his daughter would agree.

"That sounds fair enough." Penny chimed in.

Sarah slightly calmed down and wiped her tears. "Can I put unicorns and bunnies too?" asked the young girl.

"You can even put Barbie dolls if you want." Leonard said while smiling at his daughter and wiping her tears away. "Come here honey...daddy loves you so much!" he said, hugging his daughter tight.

"Daddy, Buster's basket is not there yet." said Sarah.

"Oh yeah...I almost forgot about that. Don't worry, your brother and I are gonna work on it tomorrow." Leonard said.

"Just make sure it's safe alright? Buster is not as young as he used to be. Right boy!?" she said to the dog. Buster looked up and barked at his sister, wagging his tail.

"Sure honey...you got it." Leonard said, feeling relieved that his daughter didn't give them a hard time.

"Okay, now let's go inside so you guys could help me make some lunch!" Penny said while taking her daughter's hand towards the kitchen.

"Mommy, are you gonna cook the chicken we bought from the store?" asked Sarah.

"Yeah...why, do you want something else?" asked Penny.

"No mommy...I love eating everything you make." said the young lady.

"It's because you love eating in general." said Penny, making the little girl laugh.

"I got that from you right!?" Sarah said, getting back at her mother and making Leonard and William laugh.

"She got you there mom!" William said.

"Amen to that!" Leonard said, piling on with what his kids said.

Penny gave Leonard a glaring look. "You're dead to me mister!" she said as she pulled a knife from the knife block, pointing it at her husband.

"Hey, that's not funny...you could get hurt with that!" said Leonard.

"Oh someone's definitely gonna get hurt!" said Penny, quickly chopping a piece of potato in half, slightly scaring the kids, running to hide behind their father.

"We love you mommy...dad made us do it!" said Sarah.

"Hey...now you throw me under the bus!?" Leonard said to his daughter, amused by her sudden change in allegiance.

"Just take one for the team daddy...we both know mommy won't hurt us!" Sarah said, making her parents laugh.

"Good job sweetheart, you're right, I would never hurt you and your brother…" Penny said as the kids went to join their mother. "Your father on the other hand is a different case." she told her kids while winking at them.

"Daddy, you should apologize to mommy and take her out on a date!" said Sarah, making Penny and William laugh.

Leonard sighed. "Okay, I'm sorry. I never should never have said that." he said to his wife.

Penny pouted her lips and turned around. "Fine...just don't go near me while I have a knife in my hand." she jokingly said.

"Alright I get it. Come on buddy, let's clean up while they get busy in the kitchen." he said, as William joined him.

"I told you didn't I….just like the Hulk." William whispered, making Leonard laugh as they walk away from Penny and Sarah.

After having lunch, the young family retired to the living room to watch some TV when they heard the doorbell. Leonard went to open it, finding Howard and Bernadette standing by the door.

"Hey guys! I thought you're going on your honeymoon?" Leonard asked as the newly-wed couple stepped inside.

"We are...in a couple of days." said Bernadette.

"Yeah, we just passed by to show you the wedding photos." said Howard, showing Leonard a USB memory stick.

"Oh that's great! Let's see them!" Penny chimed in.

Howard then went behind the TV and inserted the memory stick into the USB port before taking the remote control to browse the pictures. "Just a few more seconds...and voila!" he said.

"Uncle Howard you're blocking the TV!" Sarah said as she squeezed herself in between her parents. The couple looked at each other and smiled, amused at how sweet their daughter can be, especially when it comes to her being the center of attention.

"Oh...sorry about that…" said Howard as he sat beside his wife while scrolling the pictures one by one.

Penny put her arm around her daughter as they look at the wedding photos. "Look sweetheart...you look so great!" she told her daughter.

"Is that really how my hair looks like?" Sarah asked while trying to fix her hair.

"Your hair looks fine sweetie!" Penny said, amused by her daughter's vanity.

"Don't worry about it honey, you look very beautiful at the wedding." Leonard added.

Penny became suddenly excited when they saw William in the photos. "Oh my god sweetheart! You're so handsome...look at that!" Penny said while pointing at the picture.

"Mom!" William said, slightly embarrassed by his mother's admiration.

"What? I'm just proud at how smart and handsome my baby boy is!" said Penny, kissing his cheek.

William slightly wiggled out of his mother's embrace. "Mom...I'm not a child anymore…" said the young man.

Penny released her son. "Okay I'll stop now." she said.

"Oh look at Sheldon!" said Leonard, pointing at the photo capturing Sheldon with a surprised look on his face.

"Looks like someone just pinched his butt!" Sarah said, making them all laugh.

They all continued watching the photos and videos from Howard and Bernadette's wedding with Sarah being most excited in seeing the sweet moments that happened during the wedding and at the reception.

Later that night, Leonard entered their bedroom after putting his kids to bed.

"Hey…" he said as he got under the covers, kissing his wife goodnight. Penny didn't pay him any attention but didn't stop him from kissing her. "Are you still mad at me? Leonard said, putting his hand on her shoulder.

"I'm tired Leonard...I want to sleep." Penny said while still facing away from him.

Leonard moved closer and kissed her cheek. "I'm sorry...I promise I won't do it again." he said.

Penny quickly turned around to face him before hitting him on the chest. "You're an idiot!"

Leonard laughed a little without taking his hands off his wife. "I'm an idiot...I know."

Penny punched him again. "And a jackass!" she said.

"And a jackass." Leonard said. "Come here…" he said while pulling her close and kissing her lips.

Penny wiggled a little but eventually gave in to her husband's advances. "You're not out of the woods yet mister!"

"I know…I promise I'll make it up to you." said Leonard, glad that his wife already softened up to him.

"And how do you plan on doing that?" she asked.

Leonard smiled and moved on top and started nibbling her neck. "By doing this…" he said.

Penny was slightly caught off guard and tried to break free. "Leonard let me go." she said, trying hard not to scream.

"Oh no little miss...you're mine." said Leonard as he kissed her lips.

Penny rolled her eyes and laughed a little. "Why is it so hard saying no to you?" she said.

Penny moved her arms over her head as Leonard removed her nightshirt. "Because, I'm an amazing husband!" he said before yanking off her underwear. "And a great lover!" he said, laughing a little.

She rolled her eyes. "Lover huh? Then shut up and prove it!" said Penny as she quickly wrapped her arms around his neck while Leonard locked his lips with hers, moving in as they made love under the covers.
