It won't be like this for long: Chapter 22
Chapter 22
When Rory and Parker landed in Hartford it was 5:00. Rory decided to get the kids and go home. She was not too happy about the turn of events today in New York. Carolyn agrees that Whitney will be great at the job. She too was worried about the others respecting her. She and Parker discuss the renovation of the executive floor of P&CP.
When Rory got off the elevator, Logan, Mia, and the twins were waiting to get on. They were surprised to see her.
"Ace didn't know when you would be returning. We are on our way to pick up pizza. Want to join us?" Logan asked. Both twins were nodding their heads.
"How bout we eat there?" Rory asked. It was rare for the whole family to dine in. They usually had take-out. The twins were talking a mile a minute on the elevator on the way to the parking garage.
When they got to Pizza Plus, the kids found a table in the back while Logan and Rory ordered. When Logan and Rory approached the table with the drinks, they could see Mia trying to hide behind a book. Rory turned to look. She spotted what Mia was hiding from. There was a group of her friends on the tables at the windows.
"It's okay. I will sit in front of you." Rory told Mia as she sat down. Mia never looked up from the book. The family ate and talked. The twins told Rory about the awesome room at HPG. Rory told them that she had to go back to New York on Thursday. She asked Mia if she wanted to go with her?
"Why?" Mia asked. "I'm grounded." Logan looked at Rory and nodded.
"Well, I think it will do you good to follow me around, join my meetings. Maybe you will learn something." Rory said. Mia still hadn't answered.
"What about school?" Mia asked.
"If you want to go, I can make the arrangements. I will talk with your teachers and headmaster. It shouldn't be a problem." Rory told her.
"I have an idea," Logan said. "You and Mom go to New York Thursday. Attend the meetings and me and Goofy and Gertrude will fly in after work." Logan was observing his children's eyes light up.
"Can you take Friday off?" Rory asked Logan.
"I will need to check in with the office. Maybe handle a few things, but other than that, I will be free to do whatever the family wants." Logan told them.
"Well, What do you say?" Logan asked. Everyone agreed it would be fun to spend the weekend in New York.
"Mia, you and Mak work on an agenda. Remember to include things your brother and dad will like. Give it to us Wednesday night and we will finalize it." Rory said.
Mia pulled out a notebook and pen. The kids all started talking at once. Tell her what to write down. Logan and Rory were pleased with themselves.
Thursday morning, everyone was running around. They were trying to get everything ready for Rory and Mia to leave for New York this morning and for Logan and the twins to leave after school.
When they landed in New York, Rory and Mia went straight to P&CP. Their bags were sent straight to the apartment. Logan and Rory purchased a family apartment in New York after they moved to Hartford. They wanted a home with their belongings in New York instead of staying in the HPG apartment.
Rory's first appointment was with Carolyn. They discussed her replacement. They were hoping to hire someone soon. Carolyn's official retirement date is December 31. She has plenty of time on the books, she was hoping to be able to take most of December off.
After talking with Carolyn, Rory called Logan. They had talked the night before about possibly borrowing one of the senior editors for HPG until they could find or train a replacement.
"Hey, babe….I talked with Carolyn. We both agree that borrowing a senior editor from HPG is the best way to go…..Yeah, Carolyn will work with both of them…..No, I haven't talked with Whiney yet. I want to meet our borrowed asset first….We are on our way. I love you" Rory ended the call.
She and Mia discuss the position that is being filled. Mia, like Rory, was very interested in books. She had several short stories that she wrote when she was younger. They then discussed lunch. Rory suggested Mia call Steph and Rosemary to see if they were available for lunch. Mia made that phone call while Rory made a few calls.
When they arrived at the HPG, Mia was given a guest pass, Rory has her own, to the executive floor. When they exited the elevator they were met by Logan's number 2 man, Conrad.
"My, My, if it is not Rory Huntzburger in the flesh," Conrad said and leaned in to give her a kiss on the cheek. "And Mia. Wow, I understand now...Come along," he said as he led them to the conference room.
"Logan tells me you are looking to borrow one of the best senior editors...I set you up here if that is okay. I thought you being on the publishing floor could cause too much gossip." Conrad opened the door to the room. "Thomas will be with you shortly. Help yourself to coffee. Mia, if your mother hasn't corrupted you yet, there are sodas too." Conrad left the ladies to fix their coffee.
"What did he mean by he understands now?" Mia asked Rory.
"Your dad and Conrad go back many years. I am sure he was referring to how pretty you are. Your dad probably told him that he was locking you up in a tower." Rory told her with a smile.
It wasn't too long when Thomas along with his assistant, Kim entered the room.
"Rory, it has been too long," Thomas said as Rory stood to kiss the older gentleman on the cheek.
"Yes it has, Do you remember Mia?" Rory asked. "The last time you saw her she was still holding my hand."
"Yes, Mia," He stuck out his hand for her to shake. "It has been a while." He said as he took his seat.
"Rory, Mia, this is my assistant Kim. Kim this is Lorelai Gilmore Huntzburger and her daughter Amelia." Thomas introduced. Kim was in awe. This was Lorelai Gilmore. She has read all her books.
"Mrs. Huntzburger, it is a pleasure to meet you. I have read all of your books. I was so disappointed when I started work here to discover that we did not publish your books. Is that about to change?" Kim asked. She couldn't believe she was going to be a part of publishing Lorelai Gilmore's books.
Mia on the other hand was used to people treating her parents like they were kings and queens. She was used to brown-nosing. That was something she did not want people to do. She would love to follow in her mom's footsteps, but with the last name Huntzburger or even Gilmore, she would be treated differently. That is one thing Nana Lorelai had taught her.
While Mia was lost in thought, Thomas handed Rory a folder with a resume in it.
"I understand from Logan that you are looking for someone to head P&CP for about a year. You have someone you would like to groom for the job?" Thomas asked.
"Yes, you know Carolyn Newsome, she is retiring at the end of the year. What Logan proposed is that I borrow someone from HPG. Carolyn will show my borrowed asset the ropes. How P&CP works, then I want to bring Whiney in as an assistant to the Senior editor. That way she can be trained. Within a year, she will take over." Rory told him.
"If you will look at the resume, Charles is retiring next year. I think he will fit the bill." Thomas told Rory. She looked at the resume'. After a few minutes, Rory told him to set up a meeting.
Kim stood up to go call Charles. While Rory and Thomas talked.
