Entry 42: Dusk Nymphs
"Here you of the three! If passing is what you seek, answer my riddles three!"
Alright, the blue forest that seemed to dim surrounding light just by stepping in it, and with shadows moving about as they shouldn't was already eerie enough.
"Heya." Sonata said to the strange voice. "We're this close to fighting Plantera. Please, we don't have any time for your mind games."
The strange shadows cast from unknown sources on the surrounding blue trees just... stopped.
"Wait. The first riddle was 'What is the Last Dryad doing?' You answered that."
"Yeah, I did!"
"...But you weren't supposed to... I never even thought about what would happen if you did..."
"I think we can reasonably kick your ass even if you burst out an army at this point," Sonata continued, "in case you haven't noticed, we're not really weak."
"What's the second riddle?" Tania asked to... she looked around, and gave up finding a place to look to, so she just said that to the sky.
"I mean. You have the Last Dryad with you. It's an unfair advantage. These were supposed to be impossible without her. And I thought having her with you would be impossible..."
"Nah, I just needed to throw a lot of arrows at an eyeball and now she's roommates with me ever since." Said Vince.
"I helped!" Sonata shouted. "I cut it with a sword!"
A sigh. And wind pushed on all three members of the gang. "Okay! The second riddle! ...I should change it..."
"Tell us what it is now so we can get this over with." Vince said, cocking hit radiant Jungle-green Shotbow for good measure.
"...What Evil strickens the land the most?"
"The island or the whole world?" Tania replied. "Corruption is the answer to both. This island is 5% Corrupt, while all of Terraria is 19% Corrupt."
"Let me check. Hold on."
A long pause followed.
"...Okay. Also correct. Riddle three... is a fight with me but I'm too scared to-"
"A-HA!" Vince shouted, diving in to a random bush.
When he came out, he was tackling a blueish Nymph with an odd, soft glow to her. He was already aiming his weapon at her head.
"Oh Pan that is Chlorophyte, okay, you guys are way above my power level. I guess I'll- SUCKER PUNCH!"
Some kind of blueish shadowy material (we'll get to black shadowy material soon) came in from the wilds and punched him in the face. The Dusk Nymph then got on her feet while he staggered, giving him a sweeping kick that made him fall over. Those weird branch-wings Tania and Sonata had sprouted from her back, of course blueish in color like the rest of her, much larger than the wings of the Oread and Dryad, and it pushed them back. She smirked.
Sonata charged at her, but got punched by a flurry of more faded, transparent blue things emerging from the shadows and getting at her face. Tania prepared her staff and began chanting, which was interrupted by a very fast elbow to the face, and followed by the Dusk Nymph gripping Tania, flipping her over, and placing her in a wrestling hold.
Both Vince and Sonata tried standing up. "Okay... what?" Sonata asked.
"The riddles were all bullshit." Said the Nymph of the shadows and the sunset. "You never had me 'stumped' or anything."
"So why did you make us go through them?" Asked Sonata.
She shrugged. "I like being an asshole!"
Tania managed to break out of the hold and threw her on the ground. She was breathing heavily.
"...This is going to take a while." The Last Dryad said.
Dusk Nymphs.
Lurking in the shadows of the already mystic Dusk Forests, these Nymphs are masters of shadow play. Anyone caught by them is dragged off and made to blend with them, as lost as the woods themselves.
Preferred Environment: Dusk Forest.
Environment Threat Level: Dangerous.
Environment Stats: Moist. Cool. Fantastic. Very rare. Forests that hold blue plant life and have a mystic quality to them, swirling with magical blue mist and with animals - and even some plants - that like to howl at the moon.
Other Names: Shadow Nymphs (an inaccurate name), Invisible Nymphs (another inaccurate name), Hidden Nymphs, Lie Nymphs (this is very accurate).
Affinity: Wind.
Color: Dark Azure.
Traditional Costume Weapon: "Sleeves" of blue leaves around their wrists, and only their wrists; plus necklaces with a bright azure gem. This lets them command the unique plants of their environment, along with shadowplay skills.
Vince's Comment: When fighting one, you get sweep-kicked a lot. It's something you really have to be on guard for. These Nymphs like to literally sweep you off your feet... which I guess could be "romantic" in a way? Oh yeah, always travel in pairs if you even see a slightly blue forest. (If it's not that, it's probably the Sorrow or the Mist, where you'd also need to travel in pairs.) They love attacking people by themselves.
Sonata's Comment: I don't like how they some times get credit for being, like, tied to the night or whatever. I like being considered the "Night Nymph..."
Tania's Comment: Dusk Nymph.
Nymphae Vespera.
Plenty of Nymphs have a reputation of being lurkers in the shadows or experts of deceit. A reputation that is not unearned. These, however, take that aspect to extremes, much as many Nymph Variants take some aspect of us and/or Oreads to an extreme in some way. Rather than even relying on deception, a combination of their ability to lightly silence themselves, deflect some light off of them, and even gently manipulate the mind of people to have a lower chance of noticing/processing them has made them the masters of being undetected. Naturally, this makes them hard to research if you are not friends with one already.
Closing AN:
Day 14! Almost at the halfway mark! ...I wish I could say that I have something special planned, but I really don't.
Still haven't "caught up" and finished the roughs, I again only did one rough last time. I currently just have up to Entry 89 done. So... almost halfway out of "spare extra time."
Also this is another likely Nymph Variant to be renamed. Or reworked completely.
