Chase tried to wrap his head around what was about to happen that day. Wake up, brush your teeth, eat breakfast, pick up Mr Davenport from the airport, go to your sister's funeral. Go home, eat dinner, take a shower, your sister is dead. Get ready for bed and go to sleep. You were too late.
He had been making arrangements for her funeral all week. He tried to keep himself busy so he wouldn't let the pain set in. It followed him in his sleep. Every night he dreamt about that night and what would've happened if he, Leo, and Adam had gotten there sooner.
Chase had his foot on the pedal as hard as it would go. His mind was racing as the car went up to 120 miles an hour. Leo and Adam were screaming at him to slow down, but Chase had this awful feeling that they were just barely going to make it in time. All he kept thinking is "I have to get there in time, I can't fail"
5 minutes later, Chase, Adam, and Leo found themselves at Ethans. Chase barely stopped the car before getting out. He raced in with Adam behind him, Leo struggling to keep up. Chase swore he heard Leo mutter "damn bionics" under his breath, but his mind was a little preoccupied with getting inside the house. Chase ran up to the door and knocked it down with one swift kick, door flying, and was inside the house in less than 5 seconds. Every part of him was fighting the urge to let spike out. He knew that if he did, Spike wouldn't hurt Bree, but he would kill Ethan. Even Mr Davenport couldnt help him from getting charged for murder. He found Bree in the corner the second he walked in, dress torn and trying not to show fear. Like a switch, Chase was gone. He blacked out and Spike charged Ethan.
Chase remembered hearing screaming. None were female so he was okay with that. Adam and Leo had to fill him in on what happened later. They said that Spike hit Ethan one time and he was out like a light. They couldn't tell how bad the damage was because there was too much blood.
"I've been scared of Spike, but this was different. Spike wanted to destroy him." said Leo
Later did he realize that Bree wasn't actually okay. He couldn't see past the black dress, but Ethan had stabbed her several times before they even got there. They were already too late. What he saw was her trying not to show fear because she knew she was dying. Ethan would never see freedom again, Mr Davenport would make sure of that. Adam had tried to stop the bleeding as much as he could as he waited for an ambulance while Leo was trying to keep Spike under control.
Chase couldn't help but wonder if he had stayed himself, if Bree would still be alive. He would always hate himself for it. All he could do now was send her off with love and let her know that wherever she was now, no one could ever hurt her again.
The funeral was unbearable. Her friends from school came, Tasha, Mr. Davenport, everyone whose lives she had touched and Chase was amazed to find out just how many people cared about his little sister. This made him feel so much worse. He felt like he could have done something more to help her. If only he would have realized sooner. He should've been the one in the box, not his little sister. He would never everforgive himself for letting her down.
As her casket was slowly lowered into the ground, he felt nothing but guilt and pure loneliness. He knew what he had to do. He could never live with himself after what he'd done. How could he continue on knowing he was the reason she was gone? That night after his parents and siblings went to sleep, he got into Mr. Davenport's safe and took his gone, then proceeded to the rooftop where no one could hear.
I can do this. I have to do this. I can never live with myself.
He didn't know if he had the guts, but he was sure as hell about to find out. Chase sat on the rooftop and listened to the sounds of the night as he felt himself slowly being destroyed by his own mind.
In a split second, Chase made his decision.
The end
