Sango: Age 5
Throughout the year, aside from learning of basic punching and kicking. Leo made Sango learn the other basics such as agility and hiding techniques. After she was done with those, Leo was satisfied enough to move onto the next level, he taught her some martial arts techniques. Even though she was still trying to memorize them all, it satisfied Leo enough to move their next training. Thankfully, Sango was slowly regaining her demon slaying abilities.
A now, five year old Sango was walking next to her father in the sewers, wondering what he had in store. Unlike their usual family walks, this walk they were taking was different. They were going to train in the sewers. As they get further down into the sewers, they stopped. Leo turned.
"Our next training is about alertness," Leo explained. "A ninja always needs to be alerted and sense when weapons are being thrown at them. In this training I set up some traps for you. All you need to do is to start from here and end at the manhole. Keep in mind that each time you pass, it will get harder. We'll be doing this almost every day until I'm satisfied. Any questions?"
"What if I get hurt, Sensei?" Sango asked.
Leo chuckled. "Don't worry, I'll be here to stop that if that's the case. Hidden, but I will be here."
"Okay, so when do we start?"
"Now."
Without warning, Leo pulled out a smoke bomb and threw it onto the ground. The blinding purple spoke caused Sango to flinch. In a second, her father was gone. Everything was now quiet. Too quiet, but Sango knew her father was here, so she didn't need to worry too much. With a nod, Sango ran. However, not even a few seconds, her foot caught on something. Stopping, Sango paused, looking from left to right. Then something hit her at the back at the head, causing her to yelp. She turned to where she got hit and saw a rock. As she took another few steps to her right, she fell into a hole. Sango grunted as she hit the bottom. The hole wasn't that deep, but she was amazed how Leo made a hole in the sewers. Rubbing her arm, Sango got back up and gnashed her teeth.
This type of training was different than the demon slaying training she experienced. Hell, it wasn't even that close. Sango knew the Hamato Clan had harsh ninja training and for once, she actually believe it. If Sango kept thinking these are simple ninja traps, she won't even make it back in time for dinner. With a deep breath, Sango looked ahead. She could see some clear wires.
Without hesitation, she ran. Sango dodged a few wires, but when she took a step, she noticed a brick that was being pushed down. A shadow loomed over her as she looked up. A boulder was above her and heading towards her. Eyes widened, Sango jumped away as she tumbled onto the ground. She breath heavily and was shaking a bit. A boulder?! As much as Sango wanted to question how in the world did Leo managed to get a boulder in the sewers without anyone noticing, but she didn't had the time to think about it. Her main priority was to get through this training.
Sango scrambled back onto her feet as she ran. A bamboo pool came at her face, but Sango jumped and did a flip and landed on her feet. Throughout the run in the sewers, Sango almost got hit and fall from those traps. Some hit her, but the injuries were minor. There were even some traps she was surprised that were even in this training. While she ran she recognized some directions that were familiar. As she turned, Sango noticed that there was no path ahead, except for a rope hanging from the ceiling. Sango gashed her teeth and balled her hands. From all of her demon slayer training, this training was so different to a point Sango realized what she got herself into.
Smirking, Sango shook her head. Even though this was different, but this was what she wanted and it's the challenge she accepted. With all of her might, Sango leaped off the edged. She tried to grab the rope, but missed. Gasping and with her quick thinking, she quickly turned and grasped at the end of the rope, swinging across, and landed on her side, tumbling a bit.
Then she got up and kept on running. It only took five trap holes, eight rocks, and two flinging bamboo when Sango got to the manhole. Her father jumped in front of her with a proud smile.
"Good job!" he praised. "I'm impressed."
Sango groaned. "Can I take a break, Sensei?"
Leo chuckled. "Of course! We'll continue training later."
As Sango held up her hands, Leo picked her up. Sango rested on her father's shoulder, feeling a bit sleeping. All of her limps were so sore, she wasn't sure if she could continue training. However, Sango knew that it will get easier...eventually.
"Chichiue, how did you get that boulder in the sewers?" Sango yawned.
"I didn't," Leo answered. "Your grandfather did."
"How did he do it?"
"I'm still wondering to this day."
Sango: Age 6
Even though Sango was still doing her training in the sewers, it didn't stop Leo for teaching her how to use katanas. Sango had a wooden sword. She was striking it down as she counted. Sweat was dripping from her forehead as she breath heavily.
"...997, 998, 999, 1,000!" she yelled.
"Three thousand more!" Leo ordered.
Sango gasped. She was stiff cold as she turned to her father, who had his arms crossed. He wasn't even fazed on what he just said. Instead, he just raised a brow as if to say, "So are you going to continue or what?"
With a sigh of defeat, Sango did as she was told. "!,001, 1,002, 1,003..."
As she counter, Leo patted her head, giving her a encouraging smile, which made Sango smile. Despite how brutal this training was, she was glad she got the encouragement she needed to keep going.
After she finally got to four thousand, Sango was at the living area, lying down on the couch. She was groaning from how sore her arms were. She glanced at the time and it was almost dinner. She knew her father would leave for patrol and after that she'll have to do her secret demon slayer training. This time she upgraded for doing two hours of her old training. It wasn't that much, but as always she knew she needed to be careful.
"You okay, Sango?" Leo walked over to her as he set a tray of tea on the floor.
"Yep." Sango groaned.
Leo held out a cup of tea for her. "Drink. It'll sooth you."
Nodding, Sango sat up and took the tea cup. She took a sip, noticing it's jasmine tea, her father's favorite tea. Sango didn't mind what tea her father gave her as long as it was tea. Leo took the remote and turned the T.V. on. Coincidentally, Space Heroes was on and it's a remake of the show.
"Huh," Leo frowned. "I didn't know they made a remake."
It was only fifteen minutes when Leo was gushing over how the new Space Heroes was really good and how the animation reminded him of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was another show he was in love with. Sango had watched Avatar before and liked it. As Sango tried to watch the show, Leo was gushing how Captain Ryan's design looked so handsome. Sometimes Sango wondered if her father has a secret fanboy crush on Captain Ryan.
Sango: Age 7
Sango jumped and punched Leo, but he dodged it with hands behind his back. He wasn't even trying at all. It looked like he thought it was a simple game! The two were sparing after Donnie gave her some homework to do after their lesson. It turned out that Leo and everyone else agreed she should start going to a human school after she gets done with all of the basic training she needed until she gets to train whenever she wants like her father and uncles, with a complete schedule of course.
Leo kept dodging, every time she tried to lay a hit. As Sango charged at him with a fist ready, but then a giant green fist was coming at her. Gasping, Sango jolted back, causing her to fall onto her bottom. Leo chuckled and Sango pouted, crossing her arms. He held out a hand and Sango took it. Smirking, Leo took out a book, that says, How to Deal with Toasters for Dummies.
"Really?" Sango raised a brow.
"What?" Leo frowned. "I need to read this."
"Master Leo, sometimes I wonder why you can't cook toast well," Sango sighed. "You even melted the pan yesterday."
"I didn't mean to and you know that."
"Still, for a Sensei you couldn't even master a toaster."
"If you're trying to riled me up, you gotta do better than that, Sango."
Sango scoffed and rolled her eyes. She knew her father had the inability to make toast. For some reason it's only toast he couldn't make. Everything else he could actually cook. When Sango got into her stance, she continued trying to get at least a single hit from her father. Leo paid no attention as he read his book. As Sango thought she was finally to get at least a single hit, Leo threw his book up and grabbed her arm. Sango yelped as Leo flipped her over, causing her to fall flat on the dojo matts.
"Give up or are you thirsty for more?" Leo smirked.
Chuckling, Sango got up. "I could do this all day."
Sango couldn't even get a single hit on Leo for a whole day, while she was fuming during dinner, Leo gloated about it in his own silent and calm way. Her uncles sat between them, wondering if there was a slight chance she might attack her own father. Of course, Sango knew she would never do that, but she knew someone in the family would love to prank her father and she wouldn't missed that chance to get back at him.
After dinner, while her father was meditating, she walked over to her Uncle Mikey, who was washing the dishes with Ice-Cream Kitty. Her uncle smiled and patted her head, while his cat just purred against her neck.
"Uncle Michelangelo, can I asked you something?" Sango asked.
Her uncle paused and turned off the water. Whenever her uncles hear her say their full name and not their nickname, they knew it was serious. Or at least serious to them. Mikey crouch down to her level with his cat in his arms.
"Sure," Mikey answered.
"Do you want to prank Chichiue with me?" Sango whispered.
A smirk grew across Mikey's face and Sango knew what was her answer.
On that exact night, Sango and Mikey got grounded. Leo wasn't too happy about that prank, even though it was very harmless...Well harmless in Sango's standards. Now Leo has to wait for a month until he gets back being green again.
Sango: Age 8
Sango stared down from the sewers with eyes widened. She knew the sewers had tons of places where it has it's own pool of water, but she didn't expected Leo to take her to a place where this area was somewhat clean. Across from them was water coming out from the other end, where it almost looked like a waterfall.
"You want me to do what?! Sango exclaimed.
"Jump in," Leo explained. "It's not that deep. You need to be standing under the waterfall and put your hands together. This training will help you not only to keep you standing, but have the strength to withstand an enemy that is strong like a waterfall."
Before Sango could say anything, Leo pushed her off the edge. Sango screamed as she splashed facedown in the water. The water was cold, but not freezing cold. She quickly got up and noticed the water only goes to her waist. She looked up and glared at her father, but he just shrugged. Sango wondered if her grandfather pushed her father and uncles like that. Then again, there was a good chance he might did.
Sango walked under the waterfall, putting her hands together. She grunted, feeling the intense weight of the waterfall. It felt like she was carrying a thousand pound boulder over her shoulders. Sango had carried giant boulders in her life, but this was different. Her legs buckled as she tried to keep her posture. The waterfall was weighing down on her. She could feel her knees touching the ground. Gasping, Sango tried to get up, but the waterfall was too strong. She felt like she was going to be pulled down any second.
If Sango was back at the Feudal Era, she would be able to withstand the waterfall, but she's not. She still didn't had her strength back, but she knew this type of training would help her in the long run.
"You can do this," She spoke to herself. "You can do this!"
Then Sango placed a foot firmly on the ground. Even though she was still crouching, it was a start. She closed her eyes, breathing calmly as she could. When her breathing finally relax, she put her other foot on the ground. As she continued to control her breathing, she could feel the waterfall getting lighter and lighter by the second. Slowly, she got up and kept her posture. She didn't understood how she was doing this. Sango could still feel the weight of the waterfall, even though it was light. She wasn't even sure how it was possible.
However, she did remember how even strong people had trouble carrying her hirakatsu, even though to her, it wasn't heavy. She realized it was something similar to this. In her past life she had training to carry her hirakatsu. Even though it was heavy at first, but it got lighter as time went on. At the time, Sango always thought it was because she was little and was new to carry the hirakatsu, but now looking back, it was training and technique.
After hours of training under the waterfall, the two went home. Leo was carrying her with a blue towel over her. Sango couldn't help it, but sniffed a bit. She wasn't sure why, but she was feeling a bit lightheaded.
"Ah choo!" Sango sneezed.
"Are you okay, Sango?" Leo asked.
"Chichiue, I don't feel good," Sango sniffed.
Leo nodded as he sped up his pace. "Let's go see your Uncle Donnie."
Later that night, Sango got a small cold and Donnie yelled at Leo for being an idiot for making her stand in cold water. Sango tried to defend her father, telling her uncle the water wasn't even that cold, but Donnie wasn't having it. After that Donnie had to check the water temperature whenever Leo wanted to do the waterfall training.
Sango: Age 9
When Sango was finally give her very own weapon, it was Leo's old sword before Splinter gave him the katana, which was two wakizashi sword. She also was given a iron chain that has a weight at the end. Of course she was given other ninja weapons like kunais and shurikens. However, despite that, Sango had to be trained to know all ninja weapons.
This time in her training, Sango had a blindfold on and her father and uncles were with her. Leo wanted her to learn how to use her other senses than sight, which was something she expected to do in her ninja training and something that she wanted to work on. Sango could remember many times how she was jumped by demons during her travels with Inuyasha and the gang.
Despite being blindfolded, she tried sense her uncles circling around her as if they were ready to see when she'll strike. Sango knew her family well enough to the point where she knew how they fight and how strong they were. With a deep breath, Sango charged at her Uncle Mikey with her wakizashis ready. Mikey dodged, but Sango heard a chain coming her way. Left or right? she thought. Quickly she moved to the left, but she felt chains wrapping around her and slammed her onto the ground. She felt a feet gently pressed on her.
"Yes, I win!" Mikey cheered.
"Mikey, it's not about winning," Leo sighed. "It's about Sango improving on her senses and get your foot off of my daughter!"
"Thank you," Sango got up, feeling the chains and her uncle's foot off of her.
"Try again!" Leo said. "Hajime!"
Then Sango heard each side running at her. Sango leaped away, but one of her uncles grabbed her by her shirt, pinning her against the dojo wall. She could feel a cold familiar sai at her neck. She knew who it was right away. Smirking, Sango slammed her head against Raph's.
"Gah!" Raph yelled. "What the hell, Sango?!"
Raphael loosened his grip, causing Sango to break free from his grasp. She ignored the throbbing pain of her head as she charged at her hotheaded uncle. On each side, she could hear her other uncles racing towards her. She wasn't sure if it was Donnie and Mikey, but she knew it has to be one of them. Concentrate! Sango thought. Sense which one is which! Sango threw her shurikens on her left and a couple of kunais from her right. As she slashed at Raphael, her two swords stopped. Raphael twisted her swords as they flew from her grasp. She could hear her wakizashis landed somewhere in the dojo. Sango took out a dagger, glancing at her uncles.
Sango wasn't sure how she should do this. For demons and hanyos, it was easy for them because of scent. For ninjas, they were trained for know who or what is coming at them from a young age. For demon slayers like she was, she was never taught something like that. Sure she was taught to sense danger from every corner, but that was different. Sango relied on her sight than her other senses.
Eyes widened, Sango realized even though she was blindfolded, her eyes were still open. Sango realized she was still relying on her sight. Even Michelangelo and Raphael could master this than she could. Sango pursed her lips. If a ninja like her uncles and father could master this, than she could too. Licking her lips, Sango closed her eyes. It didn't matter if she was freaking out. Despite how a ninja was feeling, they should always stay alert.
Then, Sango could sense the auras of her family or at least, that was what she was seeing. Leo was sitting, watching the lesson, Raphael was in front of her, Donatello on her left, and Michelangelo on her right. Her wakizashis, on the other hand were at the corner, near her father. The only thing Sango needed to do was to get her swords and fight her uncles. Sango tried to find an opening. All she had was her a dagger, an iron chain, kunais, and shurikens.
At once, Sango threw her shurikens at Mikey and Raph. Quickly, she raced over her Uncle Donnie, who was charging at her and spinning his bo. As he was about to strike her, Sango dodged to the side, took out her chained sickled, and use the end by throwing it. The chained tied itself around her uncle's bo and Sango pulled. She caught the bo and kicked Donnie. Then she heard Mikey, yelling behind her as she could hear his nunchaku coming at her. Gasping, Sango use the bo, hearing the chained wrapped around it. Grunting, she pulled, causing Mikey to yelp, hitting Donnie in the process. Sango threw the bo aside as she grabbed her wakizashis. She put one in it's sheath and turned to the only person left.
Sango knew her Uncle Raphael was the muscle of the group. Almost like how she was in her past life, since she was the only human in the gang not to have mystical abilities. The two charged at each other with full speed, Sango slashed her wakizashi at her uncle, but Raph dodged by ducking. Sango could sensed him going in for a kick, but Sango backed away and Raph threw a sai at her. Sango blocked it by throwing a kunai and Raphael charging at her, but a sai flew passed her, giving her cheek a little slice. Sango gasped and cursed to herself. She didn't noticed her uncle threw his other sai. Before Sango could react, Raphael tackled her onto the ground, binding her hands behind her back.
"Yame!" Leo ordered.
At once, Raph got off of her and helped her up onto her feet, wiping some dusk off of her. Sango took off her blindfold, blinking a few times as her eyes were trying to adjust to the light. Leo walked up to them and patted Sango's head.
"Good job," Leo said. "With some more practice, you'll be able to fight in the dark."
"Thank you, Sensei," Sango bowed.
"Sorry about your cheek, Squirt," Raph rubbed his neck.
Sango grinned. "It's okay, Uncle Raphie! It didn't hurt!"
Sango tried to assured her uncle by holding his hand. She understood the situation, since she's a kid after all, but Sango had worst wounds than just a scratch when she was a demon slayer. Also she literally died! Of course her family won't know that. A scratch on the cheek was child's play. Then Donnie carried her, setting her on his shoulders as they walked out of the dojo with Mikey behind him, while Leo and Raph were not too far behind.
"Hey!" Sango pouted. "I want to train more!"
"We need to fix that scratch of yours first, little lady," Donnie said.
"It's just a scratch, Uncle Donnie!" Sango wined.
Donnie rolled his eyes. "A wound is still a wound."
"Then I can train?" Sango asked.
"I think that's enough training for you, Sango," Leo answered. "We can practice tomorrow, okay?"
Sango sighed. "Okay..."
As much as Sango did wanted to train more, but she knew she'll have more time to do her demon slayer training when her family goes off to patrol. At the same time, she did had an urge of wanting to go with them and just to see what they really do at night, but she knew she had to be very patient, no matter how much she wanted to sneak out.
Then she heard something coming at her from behind her. Quickly, Sango caught it without looking back. She opened her hand and saw it was candy. Frowning, she turned and saw her Uncle Mikey, winking at her. Smiling, Sango quickly thanked her orange clad uncle and popped the candy into her mouth as Leo and Raph were getting ready to scold Mikey for giving her candy before dinner. After Donnie patched up her cheek, Sango ended up playing video games with Uncle Mikey, while her father and the rest of her uncles watched.
Sango: Age 10
This time, Sango was running through the sewers with her weapons. As she ran through the sewers, she dodged every weapon that was flying to her. She would even use her two wakizashis that were strapped at her side of her hip. She was wearing a standard Hamato keikogi, but she also had long gloves. Her hair was long, but only passed her shoulders. However, like always she had her hair in it's usual classic ponytail. Sango noticed something coming in the corner of her eyes and quickly dodged as she saw shurikens struck against the wall. She even almost fell into a trap hole by holding onto the edges. The traps were getting harder and harder every time she had to do this and Sango wondered if Leo was trying to kill her.
As she kept running, she sensed someone chasing after her. Sango pursed her lips. She recognized how this person runs. They're swift and graceful on their feet. Sango knew who it was right away. Suddenly, she turned and blocked two katanas with her two wakizashis. Leo chuckled and smirked. He seemed to be pleased that she was able to sense him nearby. Sango tried to pushed him back, but was able to push him about a few inches. However, Leo was able to push her back with ease. Sango growled. She was able to get back her strength when she was a demon slayer, but that strength she has right now was this very same ten year old strength she had in her past life.
Even though that was a lot of process for the past six years, but she still had a long way to go. In her past life, Sango relied on training, knowledge, and experience. After all, she was set out to fight demons when she was younger than ten. Ninja training was different, especially from the Hamato Clan. Ninjas of the Hamato Clan rely on training that was past down from sensei to student. Unlike other ninjas Sango encountered, the Hamato Clan value of what it means to be a shinobi - the heart of an iron blade. A ninja that is benevolent, righteous, loyal, and fidelity. Sango knew that if she was back at her original time period and joined the Hamato Clan at age 10, the skills she had as a demon slayer would be child's play to them.
Sango jumped back and threw her iron chain, catching one of her father's katana. As she was about to pull, Leo pulled her instead. Gasping, Sango yelped as she was being tossed over to her father. Leo aimed his other katana at her, but Sango pushed her heels down and held up her arm as a long blade came out of her glove. Leo was taken aback at first. It looked like he hadn't expected her to have something hidden. Then Sango took out a small dagger from the end of her chain and slashed it at Leo. Right away, Leo backed away and smashed a smoke bomb. Sango flinched by the blinding light. She tried to adjust her eyes, but then she sensed someone above her. As Sango jumped back, Leo swooped down and charged at her with his katanas at her. Sango blocked his attack, but the force he was putting was so strong that, Sango was flown against the wall. Sango grunted and fell onto the ground. Groaning, Leo grabbed her by the shoulder and shoved her against the wall, placing a blade at her neck.
Leo smirked. "I win."
Her father withdrew his blade and put it in it's sheath. Sango wiped the sweat from her forehead and did the same. Her whole body was sore, but at this point, she was used to it to a point that the soreness became second nature to her.
"So...how did I do, Sensei?" Sango asked.
Leo smiled. "You did very well, Sango. I can see that you were able keep up with me. That's a good sign because if you're able to keep up with me that well, then you'll be able to withstand your uncles."
"But I lost," Sango said.
Leo put a hand on her shoulder. "In our clan, it doesn't matter if we win or loose. It's all about how we think like a ninja. The only time we care about winning and loosing is during our missions."
Sango frowned. "Why? I thought we have to stay in the shadows and the only time we fight others is when we're seen or ordered to."
"You are correct, but from my experience, when an enemy is threatening your family and the city, all it matters is that we stop them and win. Even if the enemy escaped, all it matters is that we delay their plans." Then Leo crouched down and kissed her forehead. "You'll understand one day."
Sango blushed and rubbed her arm. "I don't know, Chichiue, but I think I already know what you meant."
Sango knew she wasn't lying. She had experienced something like this at her past life. The only thing she and her friends cared about was stopping Naraku and get the shards of the Shikon no Tama and nothing else. Yes, there were other things they worried about like Kikyo, Kohaku, Sesshomaru, Koga, Naraku's incarnations, and every single demon they encountered, but they were just obstacles they had to deal with.
Chuckling, Leo picked Sango up, carrying her in his arms. Sango pouted and crossed her arms, which caused Leo to snickered. Even though, she's ten years old and 574 mentally, Leo still treated her like a kid and not a big girl. Of course Sango couldn't blame Leo for his actions. She actually liked how he dolts on her all the time, despite his overprotectiveness.
"So, how long until I catch up to you and the others?" Sango asked.
"Well, a student is still a student, even if they became sensei," Leo answered. "but to answer your question, by the time you're fifteen you should be at a similar level to your uncles and I when we were at that age."
"Really?!"
"Yep!"
"Does that mean I can go on patrol with you, tonight?!"
"Don't push your luck."
"Aw!"
When they got back to the lair, Leo and Sango ended up watching Space Heroes. Of course that didn't last that long until a certain orange clad ninja threw a water balloon at them.
