Entry 51: Fluff Nymphs
Beginning AN:
So compared to PARALLEL UNIVERSES (well, a "parallel" "layer") and... whatever the fuck happened last chapter, this is kind of a letdown way to end Day 17, but whatever. That's just what happens when you make major milestones every 25th chapter yet publish in threes. Again, math.
Also sorry, no new permanent main character. But I promise we'll get at least one glimpse of a certain key RTLD character in Part 3...
"That was Golem?!" Sonata asked, while also furiously licking and biting through her gigantic ice cream cone. "That was it?! Seriously?! Good fucking Pan, that was PATHETIC! We overprepared for nothing!"
They were walking through some fields - the usual trio, again. Obviously. Vince sighed.
"Hey, I for one think it's nice to have a big monster that we're not completely struggling with."
"King Slime? Sealed Mammoth? Terra's Wrath?"
"Those all caught me off guard to different levels."
"Pfft!" She threw the entire cone in her mouth and ate it whole.
"It doesn't feel like I've earned anything from that fight, that's all." Sonata said.
"I appreciate how you want to challenge yourself, but remember-" Tania began.
"Yeah, yeah, we're saving the world, not doing that for ourselves. I would have thought you would appreciate that I'm at least looking for a challenge instead of my old-school 'Oh do this and more people would want to fuck me' attitude."
Anyway, they then walked over to a spot where the regular grass slowly gave away to a land where tall, pinkish plants grew out and the ground looked puffy.
"Oh, some Fluffy Hills!" Vince said. "I've been here a few times!"
"Have you been here enough to know the most important rule?" Sonata asked. "If you see what looks like teeth, it's teeth. Run. This place almost looks like something out of a children's book, but those fucking Puffballs are creepy. The fucking creepy species of Flinxes it's like... why do children book authors even have books set there that's not the right kind of message to send to kids..."
"We should be fine, right? We just took down not one, but two dangerous monsters!"
"No it was definitely one." Sonata 'corrected.'
Tania stuck her staff out and ruffled it. "Well... the life here is-"
A light pinkish Nymph emerged from the 'fluffy,' fuzzy grass and tackled Tania, rolling through the Forest grounds with her.
Both Vince and Sonata shouted "WOAH, WOAH!" as they ran over to her. Vince tried to grab the Fluff Nymph's shoulder, just to get backhanded, and hit with a claw.
"OW!" He screamed. "SO SHARP AND SO SOFT AT THE SAME TIME!"
"Yeah that's the whole biome in ten words!" Said Sonata. "'Ow' included."
Tania just flashed green, pushing the Fluff Nymph off of her. The Fluff Nymph, in the air, just whipped out something that looked like a Flinx Staff - but much larger, more elaborate, with its pink fur moving around and hissing. In a poof of dust, a horse-sized ball of pink fur with two legs and most of the body being one gigantic mouth appeared. Said mouth was already open as it fell to Tania.
But she rolled out of the way, blasting it with her newly Chlorophyte-enchanted staff.
Vince took some steps back-
And the big, puffy plants of the Fluff Hills formed tentacles that grabbed his arms and dragged him down. Lots of tiny, fuzzy worm-looking creatures dug out and began biting him.
"OW! FUZZ LEECHES!" He shouted. Sonata just pulled him out from the ground and looked at the Fluff Nymph, who was pushed away by Tania.
"Tsk tsk tsk!" Sonata said. "Come on, Nymph Lession 101, we're heavily biome-based, if you have the option to fight one of us outside the biome, always do that."
And then another fluff-tentacle grabbed her by the neck, pulling her out much deeper in to the Fluff Hills.
"AH SHIT!" Sonata cried. "Well, don't call me a hypocrite, she dragged me in to this!"
"She dragged me too!"
"No your foot touched the biome first!"
"Ah, this isn't the time!"
He fired Chlorophyte arrows around almost randomly, some of them successfully hitting at the Fluff Nymph, others her summoned familiar, but she didn't stop her battle until Tania hit her with an especially powerful green blast.
"OKAY." She said. "It looks like Plantera's fall strengthened you too, because GOOD GAIA that was tough! Can we please talk this out?!"
"...Yeah, sure!" Replied the Fluff Nymph. All the various Fluff Leeches that were starting pile atop Sonata were also called off, leaving her covered in bites. "Why didn't you ask me that to begin with?!"
"You attacked us IMMEDIATELY!" Tania screamed at her.
"...Well you should have called out to us first!"
"URGH!"
"Introductions are in order!" Said Sonata, having already forgave her and walking over to her cheerfully. "I'm Sonata, the leader of the Naked Empire!" She pointed at Tania. "That's Tania, the Last Dryad, you may have heard of her. And that's Vince," she pointed at Vince.
"Don't you dare say it." Vince said.
"You can see he's gotten in to doing shrooms, heeheehee!"
Vince sighed. "Oh, thank God, I thought you were gonna comment about how I came all over Tania by accident two weeks ago."
Fluff Nymphs.
Fluffy ground, fluffy plants, animals with fluffy fur. If you can survive with the local Nymphs and Satyrs of the Fluffy Hills, and the growling beasts within, their hair makes for good pillows.
Preferred Environment: Fluffy Hills.
Environment Threat Level: Severe.
Environment Stats: Dry. Average temperature. Moderate-fantastic. Uncommon. A biome marked by its "fluffy" pale pinkish ground, resembling solid clouds or cotton candy. Can be found underground or even under water, much more rarely.
Other Names: Cotton Nymphs, Cotton Candy Nymphs, "Pink Cloud Nymphs" (far from accurate), Fuzz Nymphs.
Affinity: Wind.
Color: Light Fuchsia.
Traditional Costume Weapon: Round bands of fluff around their wrists. Helps them command the fluff itself and grow various uncommon lifeforms out of it.
Vince's Comment: Their lands look so puffy and adorable but they're REALLY hostile! The furballs did a good job at fighting me well before I was threatened by a single Nymph there!
Yeah I should have known that just because we're done with the Nymphs with dark-tinted magic or whatever doesn't mean that the Light group is sunshine and rainbows... it's not like the Corruption and the Hallow where that is how things work, Tania keeps drilling that in to my head. But I think this Fluff Nymph that fought me did a much better job making that stick in my head.
Sonata's Comment: When I was three, and I first wandered to this biome, I thought it was made of cotton candy and started trying to eat up the ground.
It's not made of cotton candy. I learned that the first time that stuff ended up in my mouth. First time I threw up I can remember.
Oh, right, the Nymphs. Surprisingly, most of them really fucking love cotton candy. ACTUAL cotton candy.
Also yes their pubes grow faster than most Nymph types. There, I said it. What? You were probably curious about that.
Tania's Comment: Fluff Nymphs.
Nymphae Lanugo.
This Nymph Variant excells at catching any unwanted obstructions in the air and filtering it with a combination of their magic and their own innate senses. They are extravagant when it comes to picking parasites, and can even create their own sort of "lice" to consume any bugs that get near them, their own "lice" then reabsorbs itself in to their skin for consumption. In short, because of this, they are adapted to a diet of smaller beings, yet they can still consume other humanoids for their own enjoyment or getting extra nutrition from it.
Typing that made me hungry.
Closing AN:
Day 17 is done. I wish I could think of anything significant about the number 17 but I can't really? Um... today is when Deltarune Chapter 2 is released apparently? Which is also free? I don't know, I'm not the biggest fan of the Undertale series per se but Deltarune Chapter 1 looked like it addressed my biggest problem with the "Redeeming EVERYBODY" aspect (holy shit this sounds so hypocritical since THIS fanfic is about how two horny people and the Dryad befriend groups of hostile assholes who want to kill and eat them for fun. But like I mean... I kinda pointed out in Entry 16 that the others think that Sonata and Vince are just batshit insane and they actually agree with that?) but, whatever. Enjoy that game I guess, I'll be looking it up or something later.
Also holy shit it's just five more days until the "Soos and the Real Girl" anniversary and I'm still super behind on Chapter 2 Part 2. Ah... I've been meaning to touch up Chapter 1 and Chapter 2-1, maybe I could just pound out 2-2 and then instead of moving on to Chapter 3 I'd really give the first four chapters a lookover.
Anyway. This setting was rather loosely inspired by those weird "Beastmen" in Episode 4 of Gurren Lagann.
I didn't realize until I did this and #49 on one day (remember, I went by a 6-6-6-7 schedule at first, more on that later, but basically 49 and 50 were the end of one day and this was the beginning of the next) that aside fom the "special" 50 this is two "normal" entries in a row that mention one of the main Nymphs when young, ten year-old Tania and three year-old Sonata. Yeah. Um, so in this world, Nymphs age just like Humans before slowing down a lot around their twenties, but unlike demons and angels of Joy Roy or (after the planned rewrite) "Shadebows" of Blessed, Unfortunately (Unitia One/Karen's new species), it's not a hard stop, they still age physically and can get old. It would take a good while before they even appear middle-aged, let alone elderly, and let alone dying of old age, but again, unlike those races, it actually can happen.
I am not going to entertain that "500 is actually underaged by Dryad/Nymph standards" thing at all here. I mean, sorry, she's treated as an adult in literally every situation of the game and you'd have to go out of your way to read one random line like that.
"Is Vince moral considering the magic and stuff of Terraria" "Where's the sob story of Sonata/Tania accepting that they'll outlive Vince for hundreds of years if the answer to that is 'No'" I actually planned to touch on that... well, ideally I'd want to have already done that, but. Yeah. I lost track of that.
Progress on the roughs: I've finally gotten off my ass and, after just doing one again on the day before, I worked all the way up to Entry 95. And hopefully, tonight I'll have all 100 done, while tomorrow I'll work on just the Dryad's Entry by itself, (it's going to be a HUGE chapter), and then I can finally go around and get a quick start on writing all the mini-stories before I have to actually publish the chapter.
Also I've already decided that this series will not have any "between Plantera and Golem" chapters. Just for the joke. Even though there was a long period where they (over)-prepared, as stated it was two weeks. This might chronologically be the first one of Part 3. Obviously this would rule out any chapters set on that week where Vince and Tania didn't want to talk to each other (again, that's canon to the RTLD-continuity), but... that would be a boring thing to focus on and Vince and Tania already barely speak to one-another as-is. (Technically the Plantera fight happened during that week too.)
