"A race?" Jasper said with a quirked eyebrow. Amethyst was leaning against a boulder with a cocky grin on her face. As if she had a plan. Jasper had learned to not trust that smile. It was an evil smile. It made her feel stupid. And she hated feeling stupid.
She sat underneath her one tree with an angry expression. Amethyst had walked up to her while she was relaxing from her training. And had made the strangest face when she saw that Jasper was enjoying the shade. It made Jasper feel like she was being mocked.
"Just a race. From here down to Little Homeworld. Nothing else but a race." Amethyst admired her nails as Jasper stood tapping her toe.
"What do I get when I win?"
"If you win. Don't get too confident. I would hate to tear it down." Amethyst said as she started stretching, as if anticipating that Jasper was going to say yes. Jasper snorted and glanced around her generally empty space. She had cleared out the last of the stumps and the roots. The largest boulders were in the really really good rock pile. The gravel pit had been shoveled away...She didn't have any grass to pull up.
Her tree was the only thing really left in this place. She hadn't punched it into splinters just yet. She would never say that it was growing on her. That would be a sign of weakness, all she would say is that she was going to use it for as long as she could. It was exploitation nothing more.
"I always win." Jasper growled as she stood up and stretched her arms way above her head. She clenched her muscles and smirked. "So all I have to do is beat you down to Little Homeworld and then I get to punch you once really really hard wherever I want right?"
Amethyst paled and then frowned.
"Wait...what? No I never agreed to that. Why would I agree to that. How about this if you win then you get to go back to your little boulders after an hour down there. If I win then you stay there until I say you can go." Jasper snorted in response.
"Add the punch and you've got a deal."
"Fine! Okay you can punch me once. If it really means that much to you-"
"It does." Jasper said as she stood and marched over to stand beside Amethyst by the perimeter of the clearing. She put her hands to the ground and bowed her head.
"On your mark." Amethyst said quickly getting into position beside her. Jasper tensed and then began to heave herself forwards. Amethyst was clearly expecting her to pull something like this and within a second the two were off, barreling down the mountain at breakneck speed.
Jasper was sprinting with quick long easy lopes, her legs were long, her arms strong, her entire body one coiled spring of muscle and tension. She knew that it was not possible for that little runt to catch up to her in a foot race! Jasper slammed into a tree, not bothering to dodge it. The tree fell over of course. She was going faster then a car.
She slammed into another one causing it to start to crumble and crash over. Amethyst winced as she began to increase her speed. She caught up to Jasper. Amethyst was sprinting as fast as she could, her arms working as hard and fast as she could.
"Man, you really aren't good at dodging huh?" Amethyst quipped as she dodged a rock, a small puddle and leapt over a pile of brush.
"It didn't get out of my way. I'm just returning the favor!" Jasper growled as she slammed into a tree that had probably been sitting there for literal centuries. It crumbled and crashed downwards. Jasper chuckled in delight before swearing like a sailor as she ran straight into the branches that had come down in her path. She stumbled through them and started pulling twigs and leaves out of her hair.
"Yeah see sometimes it doesn't make sense to just run at something and slam yourself directly into it. I mean dude look at your arms." Amethyst was sitting on a nearby rock and catching her breath as Jasper pulled the last massive piece of bark out of her long flowing hair. Jasper glanced down with a sniff. They were covered in scrapes and bruises and cuts. But that didn't mean anything. Sure she was a little banged up but what did that matter?
"So? Why should I care? Isn't this a race?" Jasper growled before she began to sprint back down the hill. Amethyst rolled her eyes before jumping spinning and catching up to Jasper in a few seconds. Jasper glowered down at the shorter gem and increased her speed a little. It would only be fun to defeat her if she was close enough to see the crushed look on her face. Jasper rounded a corner and picked up a little bit of speed. She was leaving that punk purple gem in the dust!
Then Amethyst did another spin attack and caught up, huffing and panting. Her legs glowed and suddenly they were made out of two giant springs that added an additional bounce to her step. Soon she was actually gaining, matching, and then getting ahead of Jasper. Taking massive jumps and leaps, soaring high above the treeline.
Amethyst would glance down with a cocky smile and then bounce again, going a little further. Jasper growled and began to put on the speed again.
"No fair! You're transforming!" She shouted up at Amethyst who shrugged in response.
"So? I thought that we were just racing? Plus I really don't want to get hit."
"It doesn't count! You're not just using your strengths! You're transforming!"
"So? All gems can transform, you could transform. You just choose not to. I on the other hand am great at transforming. That's my strength." Amethyst responded as she landed and then went into a spin slowly starting to increase her distance on Jasper.
Jasper let out a bellow like a pissed off tiger and jumped, lunged, rolled and turned it into a spin attack. Her hair slapped over her back and her eyes glowed firey red as she began to gain on the retreating purple gem. Amethyst's teasing laughter flowed back at her. Jasper dug deeper and began to lay on the speed. Soon she was flinging herself through the forest. Her back hit a tree and she spun right through it. The sound of the wood exploding filled the entire forest.
She winced as the splinters bit into her skin. She shrugged them off, she was tough. She bounced through the branches as they fell down at her. What did she care? She was tough. She stumbled through a stream, rolled over boulders and crashed through shrubbery. Slowly but surely gaining on Amethyst who while going fast in her spin attack was being cautious not to hit anything.
The two looked like a pair of purple and red and white blurs as they streamed down the mountain. Jasper caught up to Amethyst and glanced over. Glaring, she felt the glare melt away on her face replaced by confusion. Amethyst looked happy, she looked like she was actually enjoying herself! She was grinning, chuckling, like a comrade in a great battle.
Jasper felt something weird in her chest, like a fist was inside of there and it was slowly opening and closing. Why would she feel like that for this freaking runt?! She was nothing to her! She was nothing! NOTHING!
Jasper shook her head and then glanced back at the path they were running down. Amethyst peeled away for a second. Jasper dug deeper, she was going to beat her if it was the last thing she did! The two were starting to get close to little homeworld. The massive structure of the barn was coming into view. It was so close! It was just pass a small cliff and then through some fields.
Jasper ground her teeth. She had an idea. A perfect idea! She sped up.
Amethyst glanced between Jasper and the jump in front of her. The cliff was coming up, it would make a decent shortcut, but it was also dangerous because holy crap if she jumped from there she was going to crash directly into the barn tower!
"JASPER! WAIT!" Amethyst shouted as Jasper spun faster and launched herself into the air. She continued to spin before pausing and starting to fall.
Peridot paused what she was doing in the green house. The orchids were coming in perfectly, which was to be expected since she was a professional at gardening. In fact she was almost a master at it! No the orchids weren't the problem, neither were the daisies, or the roses (Which were for a very special project and no one was permitted to touch them or else she would hurt them!)
It couldn't have to do with the party. She was not planning it. That was all on Pearl and Steven, it was going to be some sort of anniversary of a large corrupted gem bust. They had found a few dozen hiding in an underground cavern, managed to capture them and cure them without much trouble. She had no idea what was the matter...
She walked out of the green house (Such a cloddish name for a building made out of glass. It should have been called a glass house) Peridot paused and surveyed the outside. There was nothing the matter outside. Everyone was going around their business, getting ready for the party. Getting the last of their classes done...She sniffed the air. Didn't smell anything wrong either.
She glanced up into the air and noticed Jasper going around twenty miles per hour and falling fast. Peridot nodded and started to go back inside only to realize what she was seeing. She rushed back outside and glanced up slack jawed in amazement.
It was definitely Jasper, falling fast, and cackling the entire way. Doing little spins as if she was planning on picking up speed.
"Oh no." Peridot said before rushing to the barn. She wrenched the door open with a grunt and glanced around wildly looking for the perfect thing. She noticed it sitting on the old fashioned record player that was supposed to belong to Greg Universe but was theirs now and forever. Peridot grabbed the top off of it, needing to use a bit of her super metal controlling power to wrench it off.
She rushed back outside and looked up nervously. Jasper was closing fast, and and...and was that Amethyst spinning right behind her trying to catch up? That would be impossible, that was just a scientific fact.
Peridot put the horn to her mouth and shouted at the top of her lungs.
"INCOMING!" The gems around her paused, looked up, shouted and rushed in multiple directions. Pearl came from around the barn to see what all of the yelling was about. Bismuth followed afterwards, adjusting her braids which were in a messy state. Pearl also looked pretty flustered and was blushing for some reason.
"Hey Peridot you shout-" Steven said as he came from the fields where he had been setting up the final parts of the banequet they were having for the gems that had joined the school most recently. There were always a lot of parties and banequets and festivals at little homeschool. He glanced into the sky with the others and his face instantly paled.
"Whoa. What the heck?" Steven said.
"DUDE! WHAT THE HECK! YOU DON'T JUST LAUCH YOURSELF FROM A CLIFF!" Amethyst shouted as she caught up to the cackling Jasper.
"You do if you want to win!" Jasper shouted back as she flattened out and increased her speed.
"INCOMING!" Jasper shouted, someone repeated it on the ground. Thirty seconds later Jasper was digging herself out of the hole she had made in the ground with a smug grin.
"HA! Beat you!" She shouted turning on Amethyst who floated down to the ground in the vague shape of a scowling parachute.
"Yep. But look where I got you." Amethyst said gesturing around. Jasper paused, looked around, saw Steven, and Pearl, and Peridot and all the others. Including a bunch of strangers she didn't recognize. She then realized what was happening. And what Amethyst had pulled off.
"Ahhhhh curse you."
