Jasper was standing next to the refreshments table. She had found where they kept the coffee mugs. And had one in her hand. She smirked, she knew what to do with this! She crushed it in her hand and eagerly began to shove the sharp shards into her mouth enjoying the heat and crunch.
She pretended that she didn't hear what Pearl and Amethyst were talking about. But she totally could. The two were standing to the side near a small group of 'teachers'. Including that runt Peridot, Bismuth, and Steven.
"This is a dumb idea! You should have known better then to invite her!" Pearl was hissing to Amethyst who was glaring up, arms folded and tapping her foot. Waiting for the lecture to be over with.
"Hey this is all about letting our students mingle right? Well I want all of our students to mingle. Even her. She's my student. So we've got to deal with her." Amethyst said with crossed arms. Not backing down. Jasper chewed on her bits of coffee cup and glanced between Amethyst and the rest of the party before snorting.
This was really so stupid. She should have just slunk away the moment that they arrived. But that little runt had forced her to stay. And told her that there were coffee cups. Which were too delicious to pass up. So she of course had to stay and enjoy a few. So she had a few.
"Look dudes. She's changed. I promise you that she is getting better. Give her a chance and she might just surprise you." Amethyst said before turning to look over at Jasper and nodded. Pearl shook her head in disgust. Steven looked concerned but patted Amethyst's shoulder as if that was enough to confirm that he was on her side.
Jasper finished chewing her debris before she put the rest of her shards back down. She didn't want to feel the sharp prickling burning hot sensation in her mouth and throat anymore. It made her feel self conscious. Which was a new feeling. She had never worried about what other gems thought of her before. She was too powerful for that. But now she noticed that none of the other gems were eating their mugs the way that she was.
"Heeeeeyyyy Jasper! Sister from the same mister!" Amethyst said sliding over and nearly bumping into Jasper who gazed cooly down at the runt. Trying to resist the urge to punt her across the barn. It was tough. Most things made her want to punt them. But she would play along. For now.
"What?" She growled. Amethyst looked nervous before clearing her throat and adopting her own attitude. Jasper looked at her in confusion. Amethyst looked nervous. Not about Jasper, although Jasper could probably pick her up and destroy her in sixteen different ways. She looked like she was nervous for Jasper, not by her.
Which was confusing. And confusing things angered her. Amethyst's arm stretched out of sight before quickly snapping back with a surprised looking bluish purple gem with thick rainbow colored dreadlocks. She looked startled but quickly put on a jovial air.
"I wanted to introduce you to this hunk of gem. This is Bismuth. Bismuth Jasper, Jasper, Bismuth." Amethyst said. "Bismuth likes to make weapons and armor and buildings for gems around here. Figured you like to fight, might have something to talk-"
"You were in rose Quartz's army." Jasper snapped out glowering at the typically good natured gem who insantly looked on guard.
"UUUUhhhh...yeah." Bismuth replied in confusion.
"Your weapons were a pain to go against. Congratulations on being a thorn in the diamonds sides." Jasper said before turning sharply on her heel and marching away. "Next time when introducing me to someone make sure it isn't an old enemy." Jasper tossed over her shoulder.
"Well that went pretty worse then expected." Amethyst muttered to herself. Bismuth just patted her on the shoulder with a sigh.
"Look don't give up. The fact that she didn't just instantly attack me is probably a sign of something. But maybe choose one of those quartz's over there. They were on Pink Diamond's side when the fighting first started. Maybe she knows them? Could swap old war stories." Bismuth said pointing out to a pair of red and orange looking Gems who were discussing the latest corn crop that they were giving away to hungry humans.
"UGH. B if you weren't dating Pearl I would kiss ya right now." Amethyst said before trotting away to catch up with Jasper. Bismuth blushed as she looked after her.
"Do you think she bit off more then she could chew with this?" Steven asked nervously sliding up next to Bismuth as they watched Amethyst grab Jasper by the hair and shepheard her towards the other gems.
"Oh one hundred percent, she is getting in way over her head here. Which granted she's pretty short so it isn't that hard." Bismuth said as she shook her head.
Jasper snorted in irritation like a cornered bull as Amethyst pushed her towards another pair of gems. They were tall, strong, decent cuts with firm features. Jasper got up next to them with a scowl. Amethyst quickly moved around and butted into the middle of the conversation as if it was the most natural thing to do in the world.
"Hey gems!" Amethyst called to them. They quickly paused their conversation and turned to her with large grins on their faces.
"Prof. Ame!" They said in unison before gazing up in abject horror at Jasper who loomed above Amethyst.
"I wanted you girls to meet my other student from my off campus classes! She's sort of checking out the campus. I figured I could introduce her to a couple of the locals! Jasper this is-"
"We've met." Jasper growled out. Glaring at the two gems who instantly went rigid. Amethyst noticed the awkwardness instantly and stood in the center with a nervous grin sweating.
"Smoky quartz Facet2B5J Cut5XH and Crazy Lace Facet3F9G Cut4XG. It's been a long time. You both look terrible." She said simply. Glancing them up and down as both cowered before her. "Look at your posture. Your form is weak, your light muscles look like they haven't been properly exercised. And what are you both wearing?"
"Overalls." Crazy Lace said cowed into shyness. "It's for farming. We farm corn."
"Well it makes you look stupid. You should both feel stupid for wearing them. Hmmf. To think you both used to be elite warriors. I could always take you both in a fight. But now? Well it would just be a disgrace for me to give you the time." Jasper said before turning and marching away.
"Sorry! Sorry! You two okay?" Amethyst said. The two gems nodded, cooly. And walked off. Amethyst face palmed and raced after Jasper before gripping her by the wrist and yanking her around to the side of the barn.
"What was that all about!?" Amethyst said pointing a finger into JAsper's face. Jasper snorted and looked up and away, rolling her eyes in disgust.
"Do not insult me by introducing me to gems I know who are weaker then I am. And who willingly let themselves get weaker." Jasper said with a crack as she snipped her teeth together.
"UGH! You are infuriating! How long is this going to take for you to realize that things are different?! You don't have to fight! You can if you want to! But if someone else doesn't want to that's fine! Don't just go around insulting people! Otherwise you'll just be alone all the time!"
"I like being alone." Jasper snapped in response.
"Yeah. Well soon you won't have a choice in the matter. Because everyone will stay away from you." Amethyst said turning on her heel and marching away. Jasper looked after her in confusion.
"Where do you think you're going?"
"To try and do damage control at this party." Amethyst responded tossing her hands up in disgust. Jasper growled glanced around, raised a fist to punch the barn. No one told her what to do! If she wanted to be violent that was her choice! Screw all this holding back nonsense! Screw all this being nice junk! She would be overjoyed to be alone! Forever!
"Break that wall and you shatter."
Jasper stumbled and hit the barn wall with her shoulder. She whipped around breathless. Her heart going a thousand beats a minute. She felt her hair rise up like she had been hit by lightning (SHe had a couple of times. It felt awesome.)
Standing there, wearing blue pants, and a scowl, was Lapis.
"Lapis." Jasper growled. Lapis walked forwards, she looked like she was wading through the air. As if nothing touched her. Consequences. Fear. Dirt. It all seemed to wash off of her. Jasper shivered. She didn't know why but she wanted to run.
Instead she scoffed and stood up straighter.
"Oh joy. The greatest gem that ever formed has graced me with her presence. Let me guess Amethyst told you to try and play nice with me? Well too bad for you I don't-"
Jasper was cut off by two water hands wrapping around her neck, mouth and hair and pulling her down to her knees. She coughed trying to get water out of her body. It was a deeply unsettling feeling. She glowered up at Lapis who stood over her. Lapis had a glare on that could melt ice.
"You don't get to talk. My diamond look at you. So big and tough. Groveling in the dirt like a earth dog." Lapis snorts. She leans down and pokes at Jasper's forehead. "Listen to me very carefully. This campus is my home. And you came in here uninvited. You don't get to do that again. You mean nothing to me. Which means I can discard you whenever I want. So go back to your woods. Stack your rocks. Play warrior like the big dumb clod you are. Otherwise...well..."
Jasper felt pressure mounting on her gem. She gasped and lurched forwards hands up to swipe at Lapis who merely flexed and Jasper found herself engulfed in a watery cocoon. She struggled, desperate to get out. Images of the bottom of the ocean, cold, dark, unending, filled her eyes. She growled out a terrified 'NO!'
Then the pressure moved from her gem and she was gagging on her knees before Lapis.
"Well...I think that's enough of a threat." Lapis said admiring her nails.
"You're a monster." Jasper growled wiping at her mouth, touching her face, reassuring herself her gem was still intact.
"Yes. And they all love me. So. What are you still doing here?" Jasper glared up. She stood. And she walked away. Hands balled into fists. Her eyes felt red. She felt...so very small...
"Jasper? Why are you all wet?" Steven asked her as she passed, moving through the middle of the party, water dripping behind her. Making a puddle. She snorted in response, walked right towards the refreshments table. Summoned her helmet and headbutted it into splinters. Small pieces of food, corns lovingly grown, cakes that took hours to bake, and a large coffee display set up by Steven himself flew, shattered and were mashed to smithereens.
She walked over the wreckage, swiping at a piece that was still standing. A coffee mug came twirling down and landed with a crunch. Bismuth quickly walked towards her, getting in front of her. Arms crossed and a scowl that could stop a glacier on her face. She paused and stepped aside when she saw the hollow look on Jaspers.
"Yeah that's right! Get lost and stay lost! We're happier without you!" A voice called from the barn. Amethyst looked over. Lapis was leaning against the side of it. A very satisfied look on her face. Then a horrified one when she saw the wreckage that had happened to Steven's coffee display. She had helped him set it up earlier. He had been very proud of it!
"UGRH! NO! Jasper!" Amethyst growled tossing her hands up for what felt like the trillionth time today and rushed after the disappearing orange Gem who had just entered the corn fields that run around and around the campus.
Amethyst sprinted, tripped, got up, sprinted again, and only paused when she got to the forest.
"DARN IT! UGH!" Amethyst shouted before plopping to the ground and putting her head in her hands. "Darn it."
"Hey. You okay?" A voice called from above. Amethyst looked up to see Peridot hovering over her on a trash can lid with a nervous look in her eyes.
"Yeah. I'm fine." Amethyst muttered before patting the ground. Peridot floated down and landed with a stumble before plopping beside Amethyst and looking at the trees nearby.
"You don't seem okay." Peridot said simply as she continued to avoid eye contact for Amethyst's sake.
"It's just...It's so much work. And she's not making it any easier. And everyone else just think's I should give up, let her be. And I want to. But I know that I shouldn't right? The freaking diamonds literal interstellar genocidal warlords who slaughtered countless billions-"
"Trillions." Peridot interjected.
"Right. Thanks. Trillions. They're better, the gems at the school even seem excited for field trips to homeworld and seeing them. So why can't Jasper get the same treatment?"
Peridot put her hand over Amethyst's. Trying not to shiver. Amethyst casually lay her head against Peridot's shoulder, not noticing the blush that the green gem had on her face.
"Look. Amethyst. Jasper is...terrible. Just the worst bully I have ever met. Just a clod headed jerk. And you wanting to help her is the biggest clod headed thing I've ever seen. Anyone else would have given up by now. But not you. And that's...well to quote Steven when he talks about Connie...sweet." Peridot took a deep breath and pressed her lips to Amethyst's cheek, like she had seen done in the tv shows she loved.
Amethyst noticed that instantly, and nearly gave Peridot a nosebleed she shot up so fast.
"Whoa! but I thought! Lapis...and you...and..."
"We're roommates. That's it. You give me weird feelings that I don't get. But I will. And Jasper. Well if this is something that you have to do. Help her. But just remember that we are all here to help you. Plus it is super easy to bully Pearl into doing something to help you too." Peridot said as she stood up and dusted herself off.
"I'm going back to the party. My suggestion? Let Jasper cool down. Then try and talk to her." Amethyst paused. Thought. Sighed and got onto the trash can lid with Peridot. Holding onto the slimmer Gem's waist as they rose and took off.
