Jasper was sitting in her cave. It had started to rain so she had holed up in there. It had rained off and on since she got to earth. One of her multiple things that she hated about the puny planet. That the weather was always changing. Her blanket was wrapped around her, she would never admit it to anyone but she enjoyed the stimulation, the weight, the heft. It was an odd thing to enjoy.

She could understand enjoying a fight. She understood enjoying training. She could even sort of understand eating sharp shards of coffee mug. But she was still trying to figure out why she enjoyed having something wrapped tightly and warmly around her.

A droplet of water formed on the roof of her cave and came plopping down on her gem. She growled and rubbed at it in irritation. Her entire cave was just rocks and dirt floor. And the rain was slowly leaking in from all angles. It had not been this bad before. She wondered what she could do to slow it down, or stop it. Short of throwing rocks into the sky she didn't have many ideas.

Would Amethyst? Or Steven? Or even puny irritating Peridot? She shook her head at that, she didn't need to think about them! She didn't need to think about anyone! Just her! It was only going to be her!

"Get a grip." She mumbled as more water started dripping down the sides of her cavern. She frowned and moved towards it. She sighed and made her gem glow. She always looked dumb whenever it turned on, and it reflected a little into her eyes so it was harder for her to see sometimes. But if she got it just right...

She frowned and poked at the wall. It was a lot of water dripping down it now. Way more then she had anticipated. She heard dripping coming even harder and faster further in her cave. And what sounded like a fountain going. A small fountain but still a fountain. She turned and crab walked over to the sound.

There was a leak. Nothing too bad. But it was still coming. She sniffed at the water for a second then let it pool over her palm. She cocked her head. The wind was picking up, and she could hear pattering outside.

She went to the entrance to her cave and pushed the large boulder that blocked the entrance, she blinked in surprise. The outside world was obscured. She pressed her hand forwards and cut through the water.

She took a step out of her cave and rubbed at the rain that splattered down her face. Within seconds her hair was plastered to her back and she felt like she was encased at the bottom of the ocean. Again. The mud was knee deep, and the further she went from her cave the deeper it got. She growled and shook her head. The rain just kept on pouring down.

She knew it would be a waste of time to yell at the sky and throw things up there. She had tried that before and it didn't actually do anything. She stumbled in the muck and tried to turn back around and go back inside. It would have to subside eventually right?

As she turned she paused. Her hair bristled in shock.
"No." She whispered.

"Okay. Thanks doctor! I'll try!" Steven said as he finished off his therapy session and signed off of his computer before stretching and walking out of his room. It was great to have a bit of privacy in the house. He paused at the window and sighed with a small smile on his face. Rain was amazing, he liked all weather, but rain was great. It meant that he could stay inside, put on a thick blanket, drink some coffee and cuddle with Connie while they watched cute videos online.

He walked downstairs and passed Greg on the couch where he was tuning his guitar and slowly bobbing his balding head along to a recording on his phone.

"Hey Steven." He said casually as his son walked past him. "Cocoa on the counter."
"Thanks Dad." Steven said as he picked it up and then jumped a little when a massive crash of thunder shook the house.

"Wow that was a close one." Connie said as Steven sat down beside her. She was in their cuddling chair. A present given to them by some of the gems at little homeschool. It was big and comfortable enough to fit the both of them. And they sometimes had to kick Lion out of it when he was feeling bored and it was in the sunlight.

"Yeah. It's really coming down too. Hope everything is going okay out there." He said frowning only to get a playful pinch to the ear.
"Remember what your therapist said. Your problems first. And your school and friends are safe." Garnet said walking past before putting a bucket outside. Greg looked at her in confusion while she just shrugged. "What? It's free water."

"You still really shouldn't drink that. Or bathe. Or whatever it is you plan to use it for." Greg said as he wrinkled his nose. Garnet just shrugged again.
"Hmmmm." Pearl walked out from the kitchen rubbing her chin as she gazed at the primitive human information pad as she scrolled through it. "Steven might have a point about checking up on everyone though. Apparently some parts of the county are experiencing flooding. Places with thin soil is especially at risk for flash floods."

Pearl paused when she heard a clatter. Steven was standing with wide eyes, cocoa forgotten and blanket on the floor.

"You listen to me you massive chunk of driftwood!" Jasper shouted into the wind as she slammed her shoulder against the side of the tree with more power then she had planned to. She quickly shuffled through the muck to get to the other side and brace that side.

The tree kept on going from one direction to another. Teetering and groaning as the water and mud around it got looser and looser. She gripped it with both hands and braced her legs and lifted. Her back cracking as she ground her teeth together.
"I am going to win this stupid bet that Amethyst gave me got it! You are my tree! You are not falling over and washing away! All those stumps were losers! Weak! You are a winner! You are going to stand strong! You are not going anywhere!"

She heard her voice crack just like her back, and went back to growling and huffing again. She scowled as she slipped in the mud. Some of the gross half water half earth got into her mouth. She stuck out her tongue and dragged it against the bark. Trying to get the gross grimy taste out of her mouth. She shook her head and another bucket of water joined the deluge falling around her.

She huffed and panted. Her hands digging deep grooves into the tree trunk. She rested her head against it. She was tired. So very very tired. She growled again and glared up at the tree.

"You're not going to fall over. We are not going to fall over." She threatened it again. Her voice breaking. She shook her head and pounded it against the tree trunk. She could feel the roots sliming around underneath her, trying to get a purchase in thin soil that was rockless and empty. She could feel the tree tilting down towards her again.

She could have easily picked the tree up, tossed it over her shoulder, flung it around. IF she was on solid ground, but she might as well be back in the ocean again. She couldn't brace against anything!

"You can't fall down. You can't quit on me. You're all I've got left."

A massive gust of wind spat more rain into her face, whipping her hair around wildly. Something small and furry shrieked as it was picked up by the edge of her territory and slammed right into her face. Scratching for purchase, little paws wrapping through her hair. Jasper yowled as it gripped down and shivered nervously against her scalp.

"What are you doing?! What are you doing here?! Get off of me!" Jasper bellowed at the shivering shaking creature as it clung to her for dear life. Jasper paused and cocked her head. Beneath the pounding rain she could hear something. A rumble.

She turned her head and her eyes widened as she saw the wall of mud, debris and water hurtling down towards her at break neck speed.
"Oh no."

"Steven?" Greg asked. His son had the largest most concerned look on his face that Greg had seen for a while. Steven bit his lip and then sat back down again taking a deep breath.

"I was worried about Jasper." He said simply. Connie slipped her arms around him and pulled him into a tight squeeze.
"Do you need to go up there? To check on her?" Connie asked softly. Steven nodded before letting out a deep breath.

"I want to. I don't need to. I'm supposed to work on myself first right? If I go running up there it will probably just make her angry."

"Make who angry?" A voice asked from the backrooms as Amethyst's door opened. "Fill me in. I've been taking a cat nap all day."

Pearl placed her hands on the counter with a deep sigh and closed her eyes.
"If you are transformed into a cat just to make that dumb pun I am going to scream." She ground out. Amethyst walked past her with whiskers retreating back into her cheeks as she stuck her tongue out at her friend/roommate.

"Man it's really coming down out there huh? Think the town will flood again?" Amethyst asked. Everyone glanced at her nervously. Greg returned to strumming his guitar. Garnet went outside to check her bucket. Steven and Connie exchanged nervous looks. Amethyst glanced around at all of them in confusion.

"Okay. What's going on?"

"I keep on telling you to get lost!" Jasper wanted to shout at the small animal that was clutching onto her fist as she waved it above her head. Her tree under one arm, the water up to her chin, and her feet dug into the muck. She could feel it washing out around her. That brat Connie might have actually been right about the soil.

Jasper's eyes widened as another massive wall of water and dirt came barreling down. She barely had time to close her mouth. The water picked up and she felt her tree get washed from her.

She didn't think about it. Or the weird damp hairy creature clutching onto her for dear life. She felt her throat tighten. Water. Everywhere. Her feet slipped out from underneath her. Her arms came to her torso. Her eyes closed. It pressed, it suffocated. Grit washed into her hair. Water swirled and buffeted her around. She cracked against a pile of boulders. She slammed into another tree. She got stuck briefly in a swirl of water.

She was alone. The tree was who knows where. Washed away. Gone. Just like everything else in her life. Her training bag with it. She couldn't tell which way to her cave. Or even if her cave was still there. She didn't know which way was up. Or down.

She was alone underwater. And she didn't care enough to pull herself out.

"JASPER! WE CAN'T JUST LEAVE HER OUT THERE!" Amethyst yelled as she pulled at the screen door. Pearl rushed up behind the short grape colored gem.
"THE FLOORS! AMETHYST!" A sudden gust of wind slammed into the door and slammed it open, it cracked against the wall as a deluge of water came pouring in, soaking the floor and spitting out some sand onto the carpet.

Amethyst went sprinting six feet, got to the railing, was preparing to yeet herself off...Only for a bolt of lightning to come crashing down and strike her right in the head.

Amethyst yelped and flew back, a charred footprint left on the railing. Pearl grabbed her and yelped as she pulled the sputtering stuttering cross eyed gem back inside.

"She's smoking!" Pearl shouted, a small amount of steam drifting off of Amethyst who was twitching and trying to talk. Garnet casually walked to get her bucket, returned and poured it over Amethyst's head. The cold water instantly shocked her out of her state.

"Jasper!" Amethyst yelped out again only for Garnet to rest a hand on the shorter warrior's shoulder.
"Stop and think about what you are doing. Would she like help? Would she accept help? Is it safe for you to jump in there and help her?" Amethyst was about to speak only for Steven to walk forwards.

"We can check up on her tomorrow morning. I'll go with you. But it's not safe to leave the house right now." He said calmly. He said maturely. Amethyst scowled and marched back to her room.

"Fine. I see where everyone stands so fine."
"Amethyst. Amethyst wait!" Steven begged as she returned to her room. He sighed and hung his head. "Now I feel like a jerk." He said. A small pink blush started at his finger tips. It quickly disappeared when Connie took his hands.

"It's okay. You don't have to feel bad. Come here. Let's cuddle. And watch this video of a cat getting stuck in a box." Connie said. Steven chuckled and got back into the chair with his girlfriend.

"How did I get so lucky to have you in my life?" He asked her. She blushed and smiled back.
"Like you said. Pure luck."
