"Whoa. What happened here?" Steven asked as he floated above the ground. Amethyst holding onto his neck as her eyes widened at the destruction around them.
The mountain looked like it had been carved in half, the land slide was expansive and reached towards the end of the forest.
"I think we might have caused a bit of damage when we showed off a little while ago." Amethyst said slapping her forehead. She had totally forgotten about the entire 'teach Jasper the benefits about being delicate' thing! It had happened so long ago!
And now apparently that mixed with the rain caused enough run off that the entire ecosystem looked different.
"Do you think she's okay?" Steven asked Amethyst nervously as he slowly floated her through the air and down towards where he was pretty sure Jasper's cave had been.
"Well she's survived two crashed spaceships, getting stabbed by Peridot, countless battles, and crushed by the ocean. She should be okay. But I've never seen her survive a mountain getting tossed at her." Amethyst said nervously.
Somehow the two of them spotted the small pile of boulders that Jasper used for her cave. Steven slowly descended, carefully adjusting the height so that they came down nice and easily.
"I don't see her." Steven frowned as he hopped back up and floated looking around. He shaded his eyes and frowned gazing to try and catch a glimpse of the large orange brute.
"Anything?" Amethyst called up only for Steven to land back down beside her. He shook his head. Amethyst bit her thumb nervously. This wasn't good. She knew that Jasper could survive just about anything. But to just pull a disappearing act like this? That was out of the ordinary. At least she thought. Normally Jasper would announce her exits and entrances, they would be big and dramatic. But to just be missing?
That was actually terrifying to her.
"Okay. Think. Think. I'm Jasper, huddled in my cave. It's raining. Cave is empty..." Amethyst paused at a large hole in the ground, mud squelching against her boots. She paused and squatted to rub the hole. She raised her fingers and sniffed, she recognized the dirt. Her eyes widened as realization set in. She looked up sharply, nearly hitting Steven in the nose.
"The tree got washed away. She was here trying to stop it and must have gotten washed down..." Amethyst hopped up and started sprinting. Face set.
"Washed down where? Amethyst! Wait up!" Steven called, he started running before jumping and flying through the air after the grape colored gem. Amethyst ignored him, she knew that he could keep up, she wasn't going that fast. She ran into the tree line and followed the small trail of destruction. Wincing a little bit in realization that they had probably played a pretty big hand in the entire mess.
If they hadn't messed around with the nearby mountain then it probably would have been totally fine. Amethyst sighed, just another thing that came around because she had tried to be 'cool' and not 'smart'.
"Amethyst! Up ahead!" Steven said as he caught up to the sprinting gem. Amethyst squinted and then gulped. She saw it.
A raccoon was squatting next to Jasper. It was hard to tell that it was Jasper at first. She was laid out on her back, her hair a wild white mane around her. She was coated in a thick brown mud, leaves and stick and bug bits all caught in her hair.
She had leaves across her face and bunched around her wrists and ankles. She sort of resembled a child's clay toy, or a really really beaten up doll. The raccoon scuttled off and then quickly returned with a handful of dirt and worms. It sat nervously beside Jasper who was staring blankly up towards the blue sky. The raccoon quickly shoved the dirt and worms into Jasper's open mouth, a few worms began wiggling out of her mouth. The animals small smart hands began pushing them back into Jasper's mouth.
Her mouth stayed open but the dirt and worms and small rocks began dribbling down her throat. She still didn't move. The raccoon scuttled forwards and around her. Gathering some more dirt and worms and pieces of bugs that it could gather up before shoving it down her throat. And Jasper was just laying there and taking it.
The raccoon paused and cocked it's head. It turned as the duo approached. It instantly bristled and began growling nervously at them, it's hair sticking up and making itself look larger then a small dog. Steven took a couple of respectful steps back. He had had a few bad experiences with wild raccoons before. Amethyst just kept walking forwards. She plopped down beside Jasper. Jasper refused to acknowledge her, she didn't even blink.
"Hey sis." Amethyst said patting the larger gem's shoulder affectionately. Jasper shifted a little, swallowing the dirt and worms, grinding some of the rocks up.
"Sis. Jasper." Amethyst repeated prodding her. Jasper growled and rolled over, half heartedly swiping at Amethyst. Amethyst frowned in irritation before standing up and giving Jasper a swift kick to the side. Which only made her grunt from the effort.
"JASPER!" Amethyst shouted as loudly as she could. Jasper glanced at her over her shoulder with a scowl.
"This wouldn't have happened if not for you." She growled out. Amethyst nodded satisfied.
"Good. At least you're talking now."
"Hey. You can't just blame Amethyst for this." Steven said walking forwards, ignoring the raccoon that sat to the side. Head cocked. "You're the one who tore up all of the trees, all of the stumps too! You're the one who wanted to be out here by herself! This stuff happens when you refuse for help!"
"Steven." Amethyst said warningly. Steven glared at Amethyst before taking a calming breath.
"Sorry but she can't just keep on blaming others for her choices! She chose to stay out here! She chose to ignore our warnings about the soil. She chose to-"
"That's the whole point of the new era right? Making our own choices?" Amethyst said with a smirk. Steven flushed before shuffling his feet.
"You're right. I'm sorry."
"You're right though. Jasper. If you want to stay out here fine. We're not going to drag you kicking and screaming to little homeschool. But you don't need to do this entire lone wolf stuff either. I mean look where it's got you."
A worm was wriggling out of JAsper's mouth. She sucked it back in and crunched the dirt into nothingness. She sighed and sat up.
"You two are the worst, most irritating things I have ever met." She growled as the quagmire of mud began sliding down her back. She looked at both of them. "You have a point though. I feel...lonely."
"Well that's a start." Amethyst said with a grin before plopping down in the mud beside Jasper. Steven quickly scuttled off. He could tell that the two needed a moment.
The raccoon on the other hand clambered onto Jasper's lap and placed it's tiny weird paws on her stomach looking up at her nervously. Jasper stared down in confusion for a few seconds.
"You challenging me runt?"
"It has no clue what you're saying dude." Amethyst deadpanned as Jasper rolled her eyes before staring straight ahead.
"So. You're lonely. Let's try and fix that." Amethyst said as she cracked her back. Jasper snorted in response.
"Fix it. How can you fix that?" Amethyst glanced around before gesturing to their surroundings.
"Okay here is a metaphor for you. This place is a mess, debris everywhere, it's a bog of garbage. You don't clean everything. You just clean what you can. And the rest. Well it will become part of the ecosystem eventually."
Jasper grunted before she reached into her mouth and pulled out a worm.
"I actually like these things."
"Same." Amethyst plucked it from Jasper's fingers and slurped it down with a cocky smirk. Jasper just rolled her eyes in response. She didn't even know how to react to the runt anymore! She was just too freaking weird! Jasper snorted once again. It seemed like a pretty safe response overall.
"It's all pointless. Can't even punch a hurricane into submission. What good am I?" She growled as Amethyst elbowed her sharply.
"Hey? Where's the rude arrogant downright violent and needlessly cruel Jasper that I know and tolerate? Get over yourself already. You had a bad night, so you had a bit of a set back. That doesn't mean you get to change your entire personality overnight!"
Jasper glanced at Amethyst with a quirked eyebrow.
"You think so?"
"Really."
"I found the tree!" Steven shouted above them. The two glanced up and Amethyst cackled and clapped in delight.
"DUDE! You found the tree!" Steven was hovering with the tree tossed over one shoulder, he readjusted in midair as he slowly floated down, huffing slightly.
"The training bag really messes with the equilibrium but yeah! I think that it actually acted as a sort of anchor which kept it from going too far away." Steven deposited the tree in Jasper's hands.
Jasper stood, holding the tree, examining it one way then another. The roots were tangled around her feet. She sighed and leaned her head against the firm tree trunk.
"It's good to get this thing back." She mumbled before she began dragging it back to the massive hole it had come unglued from. She shoved it back in before she squatted and examined the soil. She walked to her pile of assorted boulders. They had been washed all over the place and she had to scoop and find them again.
She picked a few of the medium sized ones.
"What are you up to?" Steven asked as she began placing the stones around the base of the tree and shoveling dirt back into the hole.
"Need to make a stronger base." Jasper grumbled. Steven grinned before he popped his lips in response.
"I could help with that." He got onto his knees and kissed the earth. Jasper stared in disgust and then anger.
"HEY! HEY! The grass is growing back! Stop that!" She yowled as she got down and began pulling at the grass that was sprouting up.
"Hey sis! I think these saplings will help reinforce the dirt around here!" Amethyst shouted from the other side of the clearing. Jasper shot up with a growl. Amethyst had scooped out a few small holes and was shoving saplings into the dirt and then replanting them.
"NO! GAH! STOP THAT! BOTH OF YOU!" Jasper shouted as Steven continued to kiss the dirt and making more grass pop up, small flowers sprouted and the tree seemed to swell and heal right up.
"Yeah Steven that isn't a super efficient way to get your spit on the ground. Maybe just try licking? Or spitting? Or drooling?" Amethyst said as she strolled over past a shocked Jasper.
Steven looked up and wrinkled his nose.
"That doesn't sound super sanitary. Just spitting everywhere."
"Dude you are literally kissing the ground right now. There is a wild raccoon running around. Chances are you're going to get worms if you're not careful."
The two heard a loud thump and turned to see Jasper back on her back in the quagmire of mud. She was staring upwards at the sky with wide eyes.
"Jasper?" They called out nervously as Jasper just shook her head.
"Oh my diamond. This is my life. This is my life now." She glanced up, some mud dribbling from her hair. "Good news. I'm not going to be dreaming about Lapis torturing me at the bottom of the ocean."
Steven grinned satisfied.
"Really?" Amethyst asked nervously, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Jasper let out a dry chuckle.
"Yeah because you two are officially my worst nightmare now." The small hairy critter that had been hanging out along the edges of the clearing quickly came waddling over and curled itself on her chest. Settling comfortably down.
She didn't even have the energy to knock it off.
