Jasper sat and glared at the other people sitting at the table. Amethyst was beside her twiddling her thumbs. Pearl placed the last plate of food in front of Peridot who was glaring right back at Jasper. Steven, Connie and Greg were beside each other and exchanging nervous glances. Greg hesitantly reached out and took a roll from in front of him.
Jasper glowered at him, watching the movement as he brought it up to his mouth and chewed it up.
"You humans are-"
"If you can't say anything nice then shut your trap." Amethyst said warningly as she took her own roll, and a towel and some silverware rolled it up and chewed it down. Jasper turned her glare to Amethyst before sighing and rubbing her eyes.
"You humans are...delicate?" She tried spreading her hands. Greg and Connie exchanged confused looks.
"Uh...thanks?" Greg said completely at a loss to how to respond to that. Jasper glanced down at Amethyst who nodded a few times slowly as if she was giving her permission to keep talking.
"Okay. I'm just going to say it. Is that thing going to be eating with us too?" Pearl asked pointing at the raccoon that was huddled on Jasper's head. Jasper glanced up at it with a scowl.
"Don't ask me. The stupid thing won't leave me alone! It's been following me for days!" She said in exasperation as she reached up and grabbed it by the scruff. It snarled warningly at her, not enjoying being woken up.
"I don't think he likes being grabbed like that." Steven said worriedly. Jasper glowered at him and opened her mouth to snap only to get an elbow in the side from Amethyst. Jasper took a deep breath before she put the raccoon on the floor.
"I don't care what it likes or not. It's the one that keeps on following me around. Go over there and like...I don't know...hang out with those other hairy things?" Jasper said pushing the raccoon towards a sleeping and cuddling Cat Steven and Lion. The raccoon glanced over it's shoulder before ambling over towards the two cats. It had lived its entire life in the forest, it had no idea what these two animals were but it was going to find out!
The raccoon cocked its head to one side as it stared into Lion's eye. Lion opened it's eye lazily as it stared at the odd little creature eyeing him like he was some sort of puzzle. Or a snack. The raccoon snaked it's small little paws out and shoved them into Lion's nose making the large pink beast snort and rear backwards in shock, knocking tiny Cat Steven off of it's back where he had been sleeping very cozy just a few seconds ago.
"Hey!" Steven shouted jumping up as Lion snarled and snapped at the raccoon. The raccoon hissed in response and sprinted for the closest thing. Which just so happened to be the curtains.
"Why didn't anyone stop that? We all just sat and watched it." Greg grumbled over to Pearl who rolled her eyes in response.
"This is going to be a disaster. Even worse then are usual fiasco's." Pearl whispered right back. Jasper glanced at where the raccoon was before turning her attention away.
"It will be fine. So I'm going to 'eat' your 'food' with all of you." She said glancing around as if waiting for someone to argue.
"You eat?" Steven asked surprised. He then saw her snap her plate in half and shove half of it in her mouth. "Ah. Never mind."
"You guy's are going to need more plates soon huh? And mugs. I noticed that there weren't any mugs in your house anymore." Greg said as he started to cut into his dinner.
"I envy Garnet. How did she manage to get out of this?" Peridot whispered to Amethyst who leaned over as far as she could.
"She's on a date with herself. She like's to go out like that now and again. It's supossed to be a way for Ruby and Sapphire to bond or something." Amethyst whispered back before she leaned back and raised her voice.
"So Steven. Stevie Boy. Seven different flavors of Stevielicious. I heard that you were looking into some sort of online courses right?" Amethyst said before nudging Jasper meaningfully. Jasper just glanced down at Amethyst's elbow in irritation before going back to her 'dinner'. Amethyst sighed. Clearly this was going to take a lot more work then she expected. Or wanted to do.
"Are we really sure that he's okay up there?" Steven asked glancing at where the raccoon was hanging on the curtain while staring down in distress at Lion who was seated expectantly right underneath it.
"It will be fine! Move on already!" Jasper growled out warningly. Steven glanced at her before taking a deep settling sigh.
"Yes Amethyst I'm taking a few classes. I just figured I should get a GED at least. I mean I've never been formally educated-"
"By choice. I've offered to send you to school a bunch of times." Greg pointed out nervously. He sweated and rubbed at his brow. As if trying to defend his actions. But he wasn't sure to who. Pearl never pushed the formal education angle at all. In fact if anything she seemed insulted by human schools.
"Nice. Nice. It's good to improve yourself right sis?" Amethyst said glancing meaningfully towards Jasper who took a deep breath and turned to look at Steven. He squirmed under her deep penetrating gaze.
"It's...good to recognize how pathetic you are and try to do better."
"That's...not a nice thing to say." Connie said warningly. Her hand tightening around her knife. Steven rubbed the back of Connie's hand and she instantly began to relax. The two exchanged a look. Amethyst chuckled, Pearl blushed, Greg looked mighty pleased with himself and Jasper and Peridot exchanged a confused look before simultaneously shrugging.
If there was one thing that the two could seemingly agree on it was that human interactions were strange and confusing. And not to mention a little gross. Jasper turned back to her dinner and scowled. It had been Amethyst's idea for her to show up to this meal. She didn't want to though. She didn't want to be alone anymore. But that also didn't mean that she wanted to spend time and be 'besties' with them.
"This is. Certainly food." Jasper said as she picked up her plate and bit into it. Snapping the fine china in two. She chewed loudly. Peridot snorted in disgust.
"That's not how you eat food! You're supposed to use utensils! Unless your Amethyst who just uses her hands." Peridot snapped. Jasper sighed loudly, gripped a fork and stabbed it into the pieces of china, actually spearing one and shoved it into her mouth.
"Yep. Definitely going to need more plates. And mugs." Pearl said to Greg who sighed helplessly. He could afford it at least.
"What is that?" Jasper growled as Connie turned another page. Connie glanced up, the two had been sitting on the sofa in silence for a few minutes now. Everyone else was busy cleaning up from the meal, Amethyst had been dragged protesting into it by Pearl and Steven. Greg had snuck off to pick up his guitar and play it on the balcony, and Steven insisted that Connie sit down and relax since she was a guest.
Peridot had meanwhile snuck off somewhere to get out of doing the 'menial beneath her programing' house work.
Connie had actually sort of forgotten that the massive orange and white striped gem had been there. Connie smiled openly before holding the book up.
"It's the newest in the series. It's about a Witch who gets dragged to another dimension and needs to-"
"Don't care." Jasper growled out before crossing her arms and snorting in disgust. Connie sighed and rubbed her forehead, telling herself to stay calm. After all Jasper was just trying to punch her buttons. That was just what the massive gem did.
Connie rubbed her chin thinking for a few seconds. She did have something that might work. But it was a long shot. And it was a big risk.
"Okay. I guess that if a witch traveling doesn't interest you maybe this will." Connie grabbed her backpack from underneath the coffee table, she had stored it there whenever she came over. She unzipped it and pulled out another book. Jasper quirked a disinterested eyebrow.
"Another book? You do know that Gems have art that is older then your planet right?"
"This isn't any ordinary book. This is Manga." Connie said rubbing the cover admiringly before opening it up and shoving it into Jasper's thick meaty hands.
"Here! Check it out!" Connie said excitedly. She gulped, she had bought this one and hidden it, she didn't want her parents to find this. If they freaked out over a hospital romantic drama then they would lose their minds if they saw some of the pictures in this thing!
Jasper sighed and glanced down at the book, really what could human literature give her that she didn't-She paused and looked harder at the page.
"That guy shoved his hand through that other guy's stomach." Jasper said with wide eyes. Her nostrils flared in delight as the back of her teeth rubbed together.
"Yeah! It's a fighting manga about a warrior who is trying to regain his lost honor from a friend who betrayed him. Here, you read it like this." Connie turned the page for Jasper. Jasper's eyes widened in shock, the next page was even more blood soaked and disturbing then the last! There were exposed bones on this one!
"You read this stuff? You and Steven?" Jasper said shocked as Connie smiled, embarrassed.
"Well I do. He doesn't. He say's that it's a bit too much. He doesn't have the stomach for it." Connie said. Jasper was flipping through the book, her breath coming harder and faster with every turn of the page. She stopped and stared at one page with a crazy wide grin on her face. Connie looked over her shoulder and shivered.
"Oh yeah. It would make sense that you would stop there." Connie turned back to her own book and smiled leaning back. Jasper continued to huff in excitement. The massive angry gem continued to stare at the same page admiring the picture. Roving every last detail. Connie smirked to herself, and concerned herself with her own reading.
Jasper turned back to the first page that Connie had shown her and then went to the first page of the book. She chuckled darkly. This was a good book! Maybe the only good piece of art on the entire stinking planet! The man-ga as Connie had called it began with a fight, which was something that Jasper enjoyed a lot. She continued to stare at the first page admiringly.
"Enjoying the plot?" Connie asked. Jasper jumped a little bit. Startled by the sudden small talk. She had completely forgotten that the tiny human was even there. She turned to glance down at Connie and wrinkled her brow.
"Plot?"
"The story. It sort of starts off in the middle of the action which can be hard to get into. But if you want I can get the first issue and you can-"Connie yelped and scuttled backwards as Jasper leaned down pressing her face eagerly into Connie's personal bubble.
"There are more?" She growled threateningly. Connie grinned and quirked an eyebrow.
"Oh there are so many more. I can bring some up your way if you want." Jasper leaned back with a huff. Her eyes going back into that guarded look. Connie turned around and shrugged. "We can also meet up here or at little homeschool. It doesn't matter to me. I have the first four books so you are more then welcome to borrow them while you read them."
She paused suddenly thoughtful.
"You can read earth languages right?"
Jasper looked at her in confusion as Connie opened the book up again and pointed at a word bubble.
"Look this tells the plot. Moves the story along. Tells you who they are fighting and why they are fighting. Get it?" Jasper snatched the book from Connie's hands again and studied it intensely for a few more seconds. Her eyes squinting. Connie rubbed the bridge of her nose in irritation. She was definitely trying so it wasn't like Connie could get angry at her or anything.
But Jasper was also making sure that it was the most irritating thing of all time.
"I can learn it. Give me the first few books. We meet here. Tomorrow." Jasper snapped out smartly before shoving the book back into Connie's bag.
Connie grinned smugly while she side eyed Jasper. Jasper looked back before coughing and scowling.
"What?"
"Nothing. I'm just excited to have someone to read these with. I've been trying to find someone who likes them and...AH! I'm just excited to get to geek out with someone else."
"Geek out?" Jasper growled before rolling her eyes. She didn't care. Earthlings. Such little fragile weirdos.
"Amethyst! I'm leaving!" Jasper shouted to the room at large before standing up and walking dramatically to the door and then through the screen door. Greg's guitar music paused from outside. He had been sitting and plucking for a while now. And the massive gem bursting through like some sort of a monster caught him off guard.
Jasper leapt off of the balcony, landed heavily and started marching off. A few seconds later the raccoon sprinted from the house leapt off the edge of the balcony and trailed after her.
Greg was the only one who saw her slow down and let the large animal clamber up her leg and settle on her head.
"You know if she ever does anything to you you can just call it quits right? You don't owe her anything." Pearl said to Amethyst who shrugged in response before depositing another shard of plate into the trash.
"Meh. We've all done bad stuff. I figure that if she randomly attacks someone that's where I would draw the line. She's just casually destructive. I can teach that out of her."
"Yes. Please. Teach her how to use a door." Pearl said shaking her head and rolling her eyes. Sometimes she thought she was the only sensible gem. Bismuth was a close second.
