Princeton 2003. Dr. Leonard Hofstadter is visiting with his mother, Dr. Beverly Hofstadter.

"Hello mother, I have come to say goodbye, I am off to California tomorrow to start my Postdoc at Caltech."

"So you keep saying, have you got anything else to say."

"Only that I continually keep making the mistake of thinking that you are a mother who actually takes an interest in the life of her son as more than a lab rat for her psychiatric experiments."

"Such a needy little boy. You won't have your mother to come running to with every little problem out in California."

"I wish my father was here so I could say goodbye to a parent who cares about me."

"Well he is on yet another anthropological field trip, I think he keeps on doing these field trips to get away from me."

"Why would he want to do this I wonder?"

"Because he can't stand being around me, just like you."

"You know that isn't true, it would be nice to get some maternal affection in return but this would affect the conditions of your child-rearing experiments. My siblings were treated a lot better than me and look at them. My sister is already a Professor at the medical school and my little brother started Law school 2 years early and he is top of the class. I may be the black sheep of the family in your eyes but I have just got a Ph.D in Physics from one of the best Universities in the world and I am off to one of best scientific research places in the world."

"After all your disappointing and derivative work in your thesis I hope for your sake you do a lot better at Caltech or else you will soon be back here with your tail between your legs."

"Goodbye mother, I hope that you eventually find something that makes you happy. I will let you know my contact details at Caltech."
