Jasper stepped from the portal pad with a snort. What greeted her was a wide jungle. The green was dark and the flowers were a million different colors. A bug hummed past her face, she backhanded it with a snarl. The place stunk of the decomposition of thousands of trees and leaves.
"This place is stupid." She grumbled only to get a firm hand pressed to her lower back.
"If I could just-ahem-"Pearl said as she pushed behind the larger stronger gem. Jasper rolled her eyes before stepping forwards and letting the other two women off of the pad. Connie was grinning and breathing deeply.
"Ah! This place is amazing! Where are we? The jungle?"
"An excellent question Connie! Yes this is actually on the continent called-"
"It's a jungle. That's enough. So where is this thing anyway?" Jasper grumbled as she began to stalk forwards. Connie and Pearl quickly following after her. Connie had a backpack on that clattered against her back. A sword sticking out of the top. Jasper doubted that the slight human could even wield a gem weapon with any sort of skill. After all she was a human. Although Jasper had no clue what else she would need in that backpack. Maybe food? Or water? Humans seemed to need to ingest both with a lot of regularity.
Connie's hiking boots crunched over a fallen branch. She waved away a few bugs before stopping short, opening the backpack and pulling out a can and spraying some fruity smelling gas across her arms and legs rapidly before shoving it back in. Jasper gave her an amazed and confused look.
"Humans." Jasper snorted and shook her head. "So delicate."
"Well since you do not seem at all interested in learning where we are then maybe you might find a bit of history about the gem we are currently tracking-" Pearl began only to make eye contact with Jasper and trailing off. She cleared her throat in defeat.
"Never mind." Pearl said in irritation. Jasper ground her teeth together and ducked under a low log. The others could move under it without any difficulty, but she was just too tall.
"I thought that you three had captured all of the corrupted gems already? I woke up in a giant weird bath tub and there were a lot there. How many did you miss?" Jasper said glancing over her shoulder once. Pearl blushed and adjusted her jacket.
"Well we were making a good amount of progress on capturing feral corrupted gems. But then we sort of...well...Steven needed more and more attention you see so we sort of... Stopped." Pearl said. Jasper paused and gave her a look that Pearl couldn't read. Disgust. Impassive rage, amazement. Something like that.
"Well you weren't there yourself! So you can't talk!" Pearl snapped in irritation.
"A lot was going on at the time. We had to make sacrifices." Connie said coming to Pearls defense. Jasper snorted and continued trooping through the jungle. She swatted at a large spiderweb and then rubbed at her hair trying to get the cobweb out of her long crazed pelt.
"So now the three of us have to march around here to find one of the what I can only assume is countless-"
"Not countless!" Pearl defended herself.
"Corrupted gems that you all just abandoned."
"Didn't abandon them!" Pearl defended herself and the other crystal gems.
"Catch it and bring it back for Steven to fix somehow?" Jasper finished. Pearl was blushing with rage, her fingers digging into her palms.
"Yes. That is the basics of it." She responded icily. Connie was glaring at Jasper and turned to Pearl with an apologetic smile.
"Could I talk to her for a moment? Trust me it's super quick."
"Go ahead. I'll scout the area." Pearl responded as she turned on her heel, nose in the air. Irritation and stress on her shoulders. Connie frowned and turned to Jasper with fire in her eyes. But her voice was level and as polite as she could make it.
"Okay. What was that about? What's the matter?" She said. Jasper raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"Wrong?"
"You're being so mean? What's going on?" Connie said crossing her arms and tapping a foot. Jasper thought for a second before shrugging her hands open and eyes narrowed in confusion.
"Nothing? I'm fine. She's the one who's acting like I just insulted her."
"Because you did. Look do you want to be here? I thought that you might like going on a gem hunt. If not then we can head back. It doesn't matter to me."
"No. I...want to be here. I'm trying to make sense of it though. Why did they stop hunting corrupted gems? I would have thought-"
"It doesn't matter, we're here. We are going to find the gem. And chances are you are going to get to punch it really hard. Isn't that what you want?" Connie asked with a smirk. Jasper rubbed her chin thinking. The gears slowly turning.
"I do really want to punch something. Especially if you don't get angry at me for doing so." Jasper said. Connie smirked and elbowed Jasper playfully in the side. Jasper looked at her in confusion, bristling. Connie paused before doing it again, slower, as if she was petting a cat she had accidentally cornered and didn't want to scare.
"What was that for?" Jasper said as Connie shrugged.
"Just being friendly. I hope that you do enjoy this. Especially since it means you could probably go on another if you want to. Which means..." Connie said eyebrows raised and eyes wide and excited.
"I get to punch more stuff?" Connie chuckled and nodded.
"That and we get to talk more about the books! You're reading them right?" Connie said as she turned back towards where Pearl went off to.
"Yes. It's violent." Jasper's smirk was bone chilling, and very close to being murderous. Connie shivered despite the warm weather, maybe the two of them being alone together wasn't the best plan she had ever come up with. But she was trying to take Steven's advice. He wanted to give everyone a second chance.
So who was she? Not to at least try?
"Now where's Pearl? I bet that she want's us to try and find that gem." Connie said. The two ducked under some large flat leaves, around a few dozen trunks, and then pushed through some dense underbrush. Jasper followed Connie for as long as she could stand it, but Connie was small, and slower then her, and that backpack really slowed her down. Especially when they had to duck under certain tree limbs. It kept on getting stuck, which meant they had to pause while she yanked it free.
Jasper finally grumbled and moved in front of her. Her sharp helmet materializing, it's additional sharpened sides added a little extra protection.
"Come on! Get that blade out. If it can cut through a gem then it can cut through these weeds." Jasper snapped, she wanted to find that corruption already. If it meant she had the chance to get in a fight.
Connie quickly dug her sword out with a chuckle.
"I completely forgot that I had this. Doy! Yeah this will get us through a lot faster." She took a professional sword fighting position and then began to effortlessly cut through the forest as if the trees and leaves weren't even there. Jasper paused, impressed. Connie noticed her staring and paused for a moment.
"What?"
"Just wondering. If you're that good how good your training system was."
"Oh. Pearl trained me. She's pretty good. I bet that she would spar with you if you asked." Connie said. Jasper didn't remark on that, instead turning back to the tree in front of her. She headbutted it to the side and continued striding. Connie rolled her eyes.
"Show off." She grumbled. At least they would be able to find their way back to the teleportation pad. So...something good came out of the habitat destruction.
Jasper paused and held up a hand. There was a large hoofprint in the mud in front of her. She leaned down and touched it. The mud was still wet, but the bottom of it wasn't incredibly wet. Which meant that the water didn't have time to pool.
"This is fresh." Jasper grumbled, looking up, there was more destruction ahead of them. Something was out there...
"Where in the stars is that Pearl?" Jasper grumbled. Connie crouched beside Jasper, leaning on the sword, which pushed a little into the mud. She pulled it out with a gag. The mud stank, everything in the jungle had a very strong smell. Some of it was nasty, some of it was actually rather pleasent, the flowers were a million different scents, some as fine as baked goods.
"I wonder if she-"Connie was cut off as a massive screech filled the jungle. Followed by Pearl getting flung towards them at around ninety miles per hour. She had a spear in either hand, her eyes were narrowed, focused. Jasper turned her head just enough to watch Pearl land daintly on one leg, turn in a brisk circle and then alight without a hair out of place.
"Whoa." Connie said in shock as Pearl took a deep breath.
"Get ready. The corruption is coming." Pearl said casually as she moved forwards again. Jasper turned her head to look through the Pearl sized hole that had torn through the jungle canopy.
"What do you-" Jasper was cut off as a massive ball covered in spikes came crashing through the brush. Jasper leapt up, a smile cracking over her face.
"Finally!" Jasper shouted, getting into a fighting position, arms up, fists tight, eyes wide. The ball paused and unwound. It looked like a large six legged beast, about the size of a dozen eye ships stacked on top of each other. Covered in sharp spines. A large gem was poking out of the top, with a few dozen spines surrounding it protectively.
"Look out!" Pearl shouted as she dove on Connie and knocked her out of the way. The large corrupted gem began thrashing, moving it's bulk around like a worm. Crashing here and there wildly. Without a care of who or what it hit. Jasper ducked and dodged. Weaving around each blow, not letting a single one hit. Her feral grin was getting wider with every passing second.
She got close enough to grip one of the spikes coming out of the creatures side. SHe held it tight and brought a fist back. Her fist whistled through the air and hit right between a pair of the spikes. The creature was flung backwards, it rolled and then pushed itself upwards, shaking itself like a wet dog.
"Oh feisty huh?" Jasper said cracking her neck. "Finally! Something I can punch that punches back!"
She let out a deep throaty chuckle as she moved forwards again, her feet slipped out from under her and she went into a tight roll, her hair covering her. She moved quickly across the mud and dirt of the forest floor. She launched herself upwards at the last moment before bouncing off of the canopy and landing heavily against the side of the large corrupted gem.
The gem shivered before shaking Jasper off. Jasper grunted as she hit a tree branch before falling to the dirt in a crouch.
"Well this is certainly a lot more fun then sitting around your little school." Jasper grunted in delight.
"Do not mock the school! The only progress that we have made as a group has been from that-" Pearl was cut off as the corrupted gem turned its attention to her. It flicked a leg outwards and Pearl jumped upwards, dodging, twisting. Her spear shot out and hit one of the spines.
The spine began to glow a bright blue. Pearl gulped.
"Oh I forgot..."She moaned before yelping as the massive spine shot a energy blast outwards.
"PEARL!" Connie shouted as the gem was shot upwards towards the sky.
"Get Connie out of heeeee-" Pearl shouted as she flew off. Jasper looked after the gem in amazement.
"Well that can't be-" Jasper started only to hear the creature roar again. Connie was standing with her sword raised at the ready. Jasper ground her teeth together. She could probably take the corrupted gem on her own...but if the dumb human got hurt...
Connie yelped as she was flung over Jasper's shoulder. The larger beefy gem sprinted through the jungle, a scowl on her face.
"JASPER! The gem is back there! Where are we going?!" Connie shouted. Jasper glanced around.
"Finding Pearl, then I'm going back to deal with that thing." She said in irritation.
"I could have taken it!" Connie protested. Jasper only spared that a harsh laugh.
"I could!"
"No you couldn't."
"Could so!"
"Could not! Not shut up! I'm going to throw you!" Jasper shouted. Connie looked over her shoulder towards the steep cliff they were sprinting towards.
"WHAT?! NO!"
"Too late." Jasper responded as she jumped and tossed the smaller human upwards. Jasper didn't bother to see where Connie would land, she had a general idea of where. What she was concerned about was the large spiney thing that was coming after her at around eighty miles an hour. She could hear it crunching through the underbrush after her, and jumping off the cliff after her.
"I'll worry about it when I land." Jasper grumbled. SHe hoped that Connie was tougher then most of the other humans that she had run into. Jasper grabbed a tree branch on her way down, swung herself forwards and hit the ground running. SHe heard the corrupted gem land after her. She rubbed her chin, turning around and running backwards to watch the corrupted gem follow after her.
Trees bent and broke around her. When the trees hit the spikes though the spikes shot out energy...
Jasper held her arms out as Connie came crashing through the canopy and landed in them.
"Did you plan that?!" Connie shouted to Jasper who didn't slow down at all.
"Nope. Now I'm going to do it again. Aim for the space beside the gem when you land. I'll try to keep her immobile." Jasper said before heaving Connie back into the sky again. Jasper paused and planted her feet with a growl. Her arms out and at the ready.
The corrupted gem came barreling into her. Jasper's smile threatened to peel right off of her face as she stared into the beasts maw.
"Yeah. This is it. Come and take it." Jasper grunted as the beast kept on pushing forwards. Trying to bowl her over. Jasper ground her teeth together and stared at the beast in response.
"I am not moving." She grunted pushing the corrupted gem backwards. Step by agonizing step. "You are going down."
She glanced up. Connie had stopped her screaming and was streamlined downwards. Her sword unsheathed and pointed downwards. Jasper smirked. The little twerp might actually be able to do it. She wondered if Connie was as soft as the other humans. She was certainly going to find out. Distance was closing in thirty, twenty, ten, five four three two
"I won." Jasper grunted. Connie shrieked as the blade pointed downwards. Pearl shrieked as she leapt through the canopy, scooping Connie out of the air. The sword continuing onwards, a bright pale blue bolt of energy exploded from Pearls spear, hitting the hilt of the sword and hastening it along. Right next to the corrupted Gem's gem. It shivered, expanded and then poofed. The gem landing on the ground. Pearl landed daintily, putting Connie down and fussing over her.
"CONNIE! OH MY STARS! YOU'RE NOT HURT ARE YOU? YOUR MOTHER WOULD NEVER FORGIVE US IF YOU-AND STEVEN OH MY STARS STEVEN! HE WOULD-" Pearl cut herself off and whirled on Jasper with a firm look on her face before pausing, taking a breath and relaxing.
"Jasper. Connie." Pearl said folding her hands tightly in front of her. Jasper quirked an eyebrow before tossing the poofed gem to Pearl.
"Here."
"Thank you. Are the two of you alright?" Pearl asked as she put the gem into a bubble and touched the top, causing it to dissipate.
"I'm fine! That was amazing! You two were just...and like..." Connie said as she shot her arms up and began chopping the air with them like she was some sort of robot. "And just! OHMIGOSH! It was awesome!" Connie howled in delight before she jumped and wrapped one arm around Pearl's waist and the other around Jasper's. Jasper stiffened and stared down in confusion. Pearl grinned and patted Connie's back. Pearl had stiffened for a moment but quickly relaxed into the hug. Wrapping her own free arm around Jasper.
Jasper looked at the two of them in confusion.
"What's with this? It was easy."
"Shush. You. Enjoy the contact." Pearl responded. Jasper shifted in irritation before huffing.
"Okay. Hug over now." Jasper snapped. Pearl and Connie pulled away with chuckles.
"Well? What did you think of your first mission with the crystal gems?" Connie asked. Jasper groaned and rubbed her eyes.
"It wasn't as big a disaster as I expected. Can I go home now?"
