A.N : Thanks for the prompt, Baillie !
This day had been tiring. Files had to be organized, others had to be looked upon since they had to take their next case – though the final decision only belong to the boss. She also had to answer phone calls and jolt down any important matters on a paper just in case she forgot. During the day, some of the regular members came too, mainly just to chat because they had a light day. Mai liked to take a break sometimes, but she once again got scolded by Naru because she was chatting. And of course, Mai had to bring tea to her workaholic of a boss ever so often. How many litres of tea did he drink a day? Mai would have to count the cups one day to be sure. She was even surprised she hadn't done it already.
Anyway, regulars left mid-afternoon and Mai began cleaning a bit. It was evening before she knew it, and rain had began to poor dreadfully.
After yet another request for tea from Naru, Mai sighed and headed for the kitchenette. It would soon be over, after that she would go home and rest.
When the cup was ready, Mai lifted it to bring it to Naru but all the lights suddenly went out and a loud thunderclap sounded. Mai jumped in surprise, let out a quick yell and unfortunately dropped the cup. The tea spilled and the cup broke on the ground, pieces thrown everywhere.
"Oh, no... Tell me it's a joke. Did I really needed this?" She told herself.
Now she couldn't see shit, had to clean everything and make another tea for the still waiting Naru.
"What is happening?"
Mai was startled for the second time this night.
"There's power failure, a thunder and i just dropped the cup... Now i have to clean everything, sorry but you'll have to wait a bit longer," Mai answered tiredly still with her heart beating, trying to calm down.
"Come find a flashlight in the equipment room."
Without a word, she followed his voice dragging her hand on whatever was beside her to find the way until she felt what seemed to be his shirt. She withdrew her hand immediately knowing he wasn't a fan of contact.
"Sorry."
He didn't answer and they tried to go to the equipment room walking side by side. Technically, it was just straight forward, and then a few feet on the left from here. But Mai had a hard time situating herself in space. She bumped into Naru.
"Did you forget how to walk straight?"
"If you hadn't noticed, we're in the dark," she immediately replied.
Mai heard him sigh, and felt his hand reaching for hers.
Unsettled, she let out a yelp, "Ah..."
Her palm in his felt... nice. She couldn't help the little smile that grew on the lips and was happy he couldn't see her face - not that she thought he would look at her but just to be safe.
"Now try to avoid obstacles," Naru was making fun of her yet again.
"I know that already..." she pouted, but at least he wasn't in a bad mood, it could have been worse.
They walked prudently avoiding Mai's desk until they reached the wall. Mai felt Naru's hand tugging on the left and followed, they got in the room looking for a flashlight.
"Ah, found it!" Mai got one and gave one to Naru.
They exited the room and got back to the kitchenette with flashlights on this time, which was easier, and still hand in hand Mai couldn't stop noticing. They only let go when Mai crouches down to get the biggest parts of the broken cup while Naru was holding the flash light.
"Don't cut yourself," he advised Mai.
"It's ok, i can manage, don't you ever trust me?"
"I know what you're capable of."
"Oh great."
Luckily, Mai did avoided any wounds. She stood up, she put the collected chunks in the trash and turned to him.
"See?"
He did not answer and just waited on the side.
"Yeah, I know, your tea. Jeez."
She swept the floor while the tea brewed. Then, Naru finally got his tea, they exited the kitchenette and sat on the couch.
Outside, the wind had raised quite strongly adding to the rain and the thunder still thudding.
Great how was she supposed to get home with this?
"Guess I'll have to stay here for a bit... Hey, that perfect time to tell ghost stories no?" she grinned.
"Don't be stupid, Mai."
"Ok ok I got it, then..."
She raised and took a flashlight to go back to the equipment room.
"Where are you going?"
"Do you want to stay here just with two flashlights? I'm going to get a storm lamp."
He just sighed and waited on the couch, frustrated he could not read anything because of the lack of light.
Mai left and came back with the storm lamp, and put it on the low table.
"Better isn't it?"
Naru's answer never came, as it was still not enough for him to be able to read anything. This night would be long for sure. That thought crossed both their minds.
Both on one side of the couch, Naru sipping his tea while Mai was wondering what to do now.
"I guess we'll have to stay here tonight, huh?" asked Mai with a low voice.
Outside it was still washed with rain and the wind had not calmed either more.
"Most probably," confirmed Naru.
There was two couch: one in Naru's office and the one they were currently sitting on. So at least they would be able to sleep lying rather than being obliged to cower on–
Well, at least that was what Naru thought before feeling something on his shoulder. He watched as he noticed her closed eyes. Of course. Mai was a fast sleeper and she was tired not long ago, which did not help.
Well then, he supposed sleeping now couldn't hurt, he had no book to stay entertained anyway, and what would he do while the power was off? So he closed his eyes and slowly but surely, sleep took over.
The next morning Lin enters the office to find quite an unexpected scene. He suspended any move for a moment, a thin smile on his lips.
It happened sometimes for Naru to sleep in the office as he ended work late, but never yet had Mai stayed with him. And less again he'd imagine them to be sleeping together. He supposed the weather surprised them both and that somehow they just got caught in Morpheus arms.
Though Naru had fallen asleep seated straight with Mai's head on his left shoulder, his posture had shifted a bit since. His head had dropped on Mai's and his body slumped against hers during his sleep. Mai was quite in the same position.
But as the office got lighten anew, Naru stirred subtly, opened an eye then the other, and began to wonder what happened for him to be here, with Mai, as he noticed her.
If he moved, she would fall. He winced, he couldn't stay here but the silence was nice. It was only now that he noticed Lin.
The chinese man did as if nothing happened and got to his office without a word.
Naru sighed, slowly he shifted and held Mai when his body wasn't blocking hers so Mai would be lying on the couch. Being as cautious as he could not to wake her up.
He then got to his office, grabbed a cover and put it on Mai. She was still sleeping soundly, with a peaceful face.
