Entry 83: Coin Nymphs

Beginning AN:

Holy shit, last chapter came closest yet to dethroning Entry 2 in being the shortest chapter in the entire story. Yeah that one's definitely second to the top of the list of "not necessarily getting a rewrite, but an expansion." Obviously, Entry #2 is the first.

A rare sight indeed; Vince, Tania, and Sonata all laughing at the same joke together.

All of their money was stashed away at a Piggy Bank as per Tania and especially Sonata's warning. Little bits of gold and platnum - not coins - trickled down the river that the Cthulhu-Killers were bathing in, as well as an army of Nymphs with shiny skin. Said river was at the bottom of a deep canyon.

"I'm gonna have to write that down and steal that from you!" Sonata said. "Oh man, 'The Illusionist's cream...'"

The joke involved a lot of concepts in their world that were not in the real world, and were not covered in Nymphlopedia prior and probably won't be covered in Romancing the Last Dryad. In other words, you're not missing out on a joke you'd get, it would just sound alien.

Tania was out fishing with her hands, while Vince was fishing with his Gold Fishing Rod.

"Tania, I saw you laughing too!" Sonata said. "It's not like you to find a joke so dirty funny!"

"It is..." She said. A little slyly, even. "You only see my good side most of the time."

"Fair. Everybody only sees my bad side, at all times."

"You have a good side?" Asked the Coin Nymph that had just told the joke.

"I do it's just pretty well hidden."

Vince finally caught his breath. "Okay. This was nice. So, you're going to go to the Naked Empire base..."

"Vince, Sonata, the fish are coming in." Tania told him. "Protect yourself."

"And don't get any money from them." Vince said, readying a- well really he just needed a simple little stick. For those things. No fancy deep space tools that time. "Got it-"

He yelped and lept out of the water, delicately balancing his feet on a rock. "SOMETHING TOUCHED MY ASS!"

That got everyone, especially Tania and Sonata, on high alert. And yes, the two jumped out as well, but none of the Coin Nymphs did.

"WAS IT ANY OF YOU?!" Sonata asked. "Believe it or not I take sexual harassment VERY FUCKING SERIOUSLY!"

"Sonata!" Said Tania. "Don't be quick to play the blame game!"

"I'm DEAD FUCKING SERIOUS I might trick people and might have tried for 500 years to eat Human flesh but the things I do to harassers will be FUCKING DISGUSTING if I find out who did something to Vince!"

"It wasn't any of us!" Said the joke-telling Coin Nymph, but hands raised. "Vince was far away from them! It must be-"

"Something touched my ass too!" A different Coin Nymph said.

"And it's on mine!" Said another.

Tania dove in the water.

And emerged with a shimmering, golden hand-looking... creature thing. That looked like a hybrid of a glove and a Giant Shelly.

"Okay it's just a creature trying to rob us." Said Tania.

"Why the hell do creatures even grab money we drop anyway?" Asked Sonata. "Like, Nymphs, yeah. We love money. But why would some random Crimson monster grab it?"

"That's a good question!" Tania said.

"...So is it safe to go back in the water?" Vince asked.

Him and his two main companions both looked down in to the golden river.

"...That's another good question." Said Tania. "Especially since the fish are still there. I sensed them."

Coin Nymphs.

Hey you, yes you, wanna get rich quick? Well avoid the Nymphs of the Coin Canyons at all costs.

Preferred Environment: Coin Canyons.

Environment Threat Level: Peaceful. (NOT Beneficial from ANY economic standpoint.)

Environment Stats: Moist. Cool. Fantastic. Rare. Sharp canyons, mostly underground but some are on the surface, with special water running through them. Tends to be rich in pure metals. Also has occasional pools of liquid mercury.

Other Names: Money Nymphs, Wetcash Nymphs, Sponge Nymphs, "Gold Nymphs."

Affinity: Water.

Color: Dull Yellow.

Traditional Costume Weapon: "Chain" necklaces made of some metal. Usually gold, but cobalt is also fairly common, especially after a certain "blessing" of it hit the world. Helps give them power of metal, but also heavily metal-saturated waters, and liquid mercury.

Vince's Comment: I normally give advice to adventurers, people wanting to be the next me (wow that looks way more arrogant on paper than it sounded in my head), but this time I'll give a little tip if you're not looking to adventuring, but instead staying at your spot: Make friends with some of them, please. You scratch their backs, they'll let you in on some really sound economic advice. Can really plan your future out. Without divination...
If you are looking for adventuring advice, well, a lot of the ones I met were friendly. The ones who weren't... They're used to shiny things, so finding a way to darken the room suddenly will throw them off a lot. Their eyes, unlike most Nymph Variants who are adept to being underground, aren't so good with the darkness usually.

Sonata's Comment: Oh shit, they "wear" gold stuff and other metals as their clothe-like accessories... does that mean that every time I bathe in coins to brag about how FUCKING RICH I am, I'm surounding myself in clothes? No, wait, a lot of the Nymph Variants "wear" water and shit like that. I think I'm fine.

Tania's Comment: Coin Nymphs.
Nymphae Nummum.
These Nymphs are a conceptual bunch, they and their biome are tied to the idea of "currency" itself, and this is somehow used as the basis of their ecosystem. They have some inherant way of "sensing value" to objects given to them by a community. As one might guess from that description, they are a fairly social bunch of Nature Warriors.

Closing AN:

So looking through the notes-to-self I made (I mark them by putting them in curly brackets, then bolding and underlining them. They're impossible for me to miss) I saw another Affinity toy I told myself, maybe tweaking the Peak Nymphs to have some kind of water theme so that this could be an Earth one. I might do that. But I'm not sure. As it stands, these Nymphs are Water via process of elimination.

Jeez a lot of these biomes have a theme of rivers going through them. And yet, funnily enough, I don't actually have a "river biome." Just... spoiling that right now.
