Entry 92: Cascade Nymphs
Beginning AN:
So I learned as I was getting ready to upload the last chapter that FFN does, in fact, support over 100 documents on it. That's good, I don't have to decide what to snip.
Also whoo if I'm remembering right, this is one of the very few Nymph Variants I foreshadowed in advance, by name. I definitely don't remember where though. It took until the third-to-last day to finally get to that chapter.
"WHY THE FUCK DID WE TAKE A CANOE HERE?!" Sonata asked, huddled in the middle of one. "WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A FUCKING CRUISE SHIP THROUGH HERE!"
Believe it or not, Sonata wasn't exaggerating. One of those could fit. The rivers were huge - almost like long lakes, one end to another almost being on the horizon. What definitely was not all the way in the horizon was the absolutely roaring monster-waterfall that greeted them soon.
"What are you worried about?" Tania asked. "We can all fly and breathe underwater."
"I KNOW I KNOW IT'S JUST EASY TO FORGET BECAUSE THESE WAVES ARE BIGGER THAN THE BOAT! Also going through water to reach land is annoying and we can't really Recall because that is a LONG way to get back here... also, the hands here are scary as fuck."
Vince looked to Tania for answers, only, to his surprise, to get her looking back at him.
"...Hands?!" They both asked.
It turned out, contrary to the rumors, they didn't have to plunge off the waterfall to meet with the Nymphs of the area. Massive pale blue arms stuck out from the water all around the gang. Those hands took them, yanked them from their doomed ride, plunged them under the water, and (deep) below that, the ground.
...
The Trio found themselves in a deep puddle underground, in a cave that looked like its walls were about to burst and flood at any moment. Somehow, the arms did not pierce open holes in the ceilings above them, so it did not start flooding immediately.
Blue fires shot through the water. Almost like lighting some sort of torches-
Ichor, Cursed, even Coral Torches. Fire underwater wasn't a surprise.
"What do you want?" Vince asked, even before anybody showed up.
"To stop you from dooming the world."
The flames shot up one by one. And... ew, some kind of overly-loud classical music theme began playing? Someone was clearly messing around with one of those bizarre magical Music Boxes Greum loved to sell.
An azure Nymph with hair that went all the way down to her feet and then some dropped from a small opening in the ceiling above (no, it didn't directly lead to the water, there was a lot of soil in-between the rapids and that cave), landing on her toes. With some sword longer than she was tall, held in her hand, in a certain pose behind her back.
"I am the hero of Terraria!" She exclaimed. "Chosen by Pan himself and summoned forth to vanquish the blight known as Lindsey! I see fellow yet misguided allies before me, who seek to rid the curse before I may, yet as they lack the Blessing given by Pan himself, they are but foolish and are only stepping to their depths. By bringing forth Lindsey early and encouraging her to make the first move, they are also - by 'they' I mean 'you' if I wasn't clear - pulling the rest of the world in to chaos since I am not yet powerful enough."
"Oh no." Said Vince. "...Was this how I sounded at all to you when I first met either of you?"
"You owe us a canoe motherfucker!" Sonata said.
"Not to be rude," said Tania, "but what have you accomplished...?"
"I lead a small army of my own kind to rid the world of what little was left of the Moon Lord's lower half."
All three members of the Trio blinked. "Wait, really?" Vince asked.
"The Great Ass of Cthulhu?" Asked Sonata. "You still owe us a canoe."
"Yes. Exactly two weeks ago, our Rapids were attacked by him, and we destroyed the tentacles that attacked us. I have video proof of this."
"...Oh so you're not just some arrogant person or a maniac." Said Vince. Hell, the Cascade Nymph even looked like she was reaching in to the flames to get that proof. "We killed Cthulhu's upper half on that same day. So maybe that's why you didn't see that huge flash coming from our land?"
"Which was right next to yours, by the way." Added Tania.
"And it's also the land the canoe was built. That you owed us." Added Sonata.
The Cascade Nymph looked to the ground.
"Okay, okay... maybe I'm... not the hero of the story I thought I was? Still, I did kill Cthulhu's tentacles. And, like the Oread said, his ass. That should be worth... something, right?"
The Trio all nodded and gave words of agreement.
"But yes I let the canoe sail off the Cascade and crash. So I do owe you one."
Sonata let out an annoyed groan.
Cascade Nymphs.
Nature Warriors that live with the rushing rapids and waterfalls. The only thing hitting the rocks at the bottom harder than the water is the person who makes an enemy of them.
Preferred Environment: Cascades/Rapids (Surface)/Downpours (Underground).
Environment Threat Level: Moderate. (Dangerous within the actual water, Moderate around it.)
Environment Stats: Moist. Cool. Moderate-mundane. Common. Above ground, they are heavily rushing rapid rivers, usually leading to chains on chains of waterfalls and swirling pools. Underground, they resemble several waterfall systems, with the added features of specific flooded caves and caves with water leaking through the stones above.
Other Names: Waterfall Nymphs, Rapid Nymphs, Downpour Nymphs, "Flood Cave Nymphs."
Affinity: Fire.
Color: Dull Azure.
Traditional Costume Weapon: What looks like "crashing waterfall" patterns, around their elbows are bits of "rain" that spawn and trail down their arms, "crashing" around their wrists and forming clouds of mist, that are also pulled by a force to their arms. These are removeable, as with all of the "Costume Weapons." They help with controlling the flow of bodies of water. And plants tied to high-current environments.
Vince's Comment: They're fast, swift, hit like trains and like "going with the flow." The best thing I've done when faced with a storm of them is to find a way to... reverse their current? You have to, like, really pound at the ground and dig hard, but if you can mess up the way their rivers flow - BEFORE you're sent flying off the waterfalls - you should be good.
Sonata's Comment: You know that thing in the cartoons about going on a river and there's always a waterfall? Well, yeah. That's really all I have to say about them - HAVING SEX BEHIND A WATERFALL IS SO FUCKING COOL TOO if you don't mind hearing the loud water while you fuck, and getting soaked not in the sex-way but in the way of being around a lot of mist on your face.
Tania's Comment: Cascade Nymphs.
Nymphae Caesar.
Any Nymph Variant associated with an aquatic biome will have some ties to, as Vince put it, "going with the flow," in their case their "flow" is crashing and violent. Which... fits Nymphs in general. Including my own kind, I won't lie. Their philosophy fits well with their biology, as their bodies are very resilient to harsh impacts, meaning that they can grip opponents and suffer less damage than they would just by carrying them with them on the currents. This type of Nymph truly is one of the more autonomous ones, simply needing to grab and quite directly letting nature herself do the rest of the work from there.
(Note from Sonata: If you wanna call them lazy, just call them lazy. That's racist though. But you have struck me as just a little, teeny bit racist.)
Closing AN:
This wraps up Day 28. One more day entirely of "ordinary" entries to go, and then the endgame will hit.
Ah... another Affinity I'll either have to shoe-horn in something or rewrite the previous chapters of the same hue to tweak that... I went with the former. For now. But I'm just happy so see breaks in my chains of "Wind," "Wind," "Wind" being the one I neglected the most during Parts 1-3. "They're waterfalls how the fuck is that Fire" yeah... so, special water-fire. Kinda like what I did with Capri-Class demons in Joy Roy.
Oh I mentioned working a bit on the last four "normal" entries (well, last three and 100) while I was done with the ones to be uploaded for the day. And yeah, I'm still working on the Dryad Entry throughout. I've got a bit of it done, but it's still nowhere near the amount of finished I'd like it to be all things considered about the chapter being due in two days...
Also I pretty much redid the ideas for 97 and 98 from the ground up, but more on them once I get to them on the final day.
