Chapter 8: (8 weeks)
"So, I was thinking that we could have the wedding and the reception at the beach" Usagi spoke from the living room, mamoru busy making dinner for the night. "Is that alright Mamo?" she questions him. He looks up, startled.
"Uh yeah" he says as he checks the pot of water for how long until the water was boiled. "You know you can just do it yourself Usako. I don't care about my input, as long as I'm married to you" he states loudly. Suddenly, a small set of hands attempt to push his shoulders down, failing miserably.
"You listen here Mamo. This wedding isn't all about me. It's about the both of us. We're both marrying each other, and you'll only marry me once alright" she snaps at him.
"I know but all I care about is marrying you, I don't mind If you have the say in what the wedding looks like, and who the guests are. As long as I'm marrying you" he states again, turning to pick up the chopping board and place it in the sink. Then a single hand slaps him across the cheek. He freezes, shocked from the suddenness of it. He keeps his head on the dishes before he hears a choked sob, and his girlfriend's feet running off into the bedroom. Slowly, he follows after her, quietly opening the door to reveal Usagi, crying on the bed. "Usako…are you ok?" he asks her. "I'll put my input if you want, I'll help you make the decisions" he says, and she shakes her head. "What's wrong then… Did I do something?" he asks her. Another shake of her head.
"No…" she whispers, the sound muffled by the pillows. "I hurt you" another shaky breath. "I slapped you" then another wave of tears comes again, and Mamoru laughs, taking her hand gently in his.
"It doesn't matter. I guess we're even then" he notes aloud. Usagi smiles slightly, her eyes still puffy and red still. "So, a beach wedding? Wouldn't it be all sandy? And windy?" he asks her with a raise of his eyebrows.
"No…it'll be pretty. Especially around sunset" she says as she stands up. "And the reception could be at a restaurant maybe?" she asks, pulling out a book from her bedside drawer. Mamoru raised his eyebrows at the pink book, which was vastly large for a notebook. He guessed Usagi had pulled together a wedding book while she was recovering from the crash. She opened it, flicked a few pages through before finding the detailed sketches of a tuxedo.
"Already planned everything?" he asks her with a laugh. She grins and nods. "Why is there names in the top right corner?" he asks her. She just grins at him, kissing him quickly on the lips.
"For the best men of course…I thought you'd want Motoki but it's your decision" she hands him the pen, writing Motoki's name in his neat handwriting compared to her messy scribbles, before hesitating for the next name. Then, he pressed the black ink pen against the white of the page and wrote Kunzite's name next door. "Now go and eye dinner. I'm starving" she laughs at her own antics, before taking the pen out of his hands and carting the book under her arm.
"You know…We could gather the girls and Kunzite, Zoisite, Jadeite and Nephrite here one day. You know, see if there's any chemistry between them all" he says, wiggling his eyebrows.
"You know I think Mina-chan likes Kunzite" she says with a grin. "She speaks about him a lot" usagi sits down at the kitchen table as mamoru slides the food onto the table. She slides a pile of food onto her plate and begins eating.
"I was also thinking" Mamoru starts halfway through dinner. "That I enrol in a job at the hospital… I've been thinking about it for a bit" he shrugs, placing another pile of food from his fork inside his mouth. He watches usagi swallow before grinning.
"That sounds amazing Mamo-chan. You'll get to be doctor Mamo-chan and achieve your dreams" she grins and he smiles. "you'll be home sometimes, right? You wont find another nurse who's smarter and prettier than me, right? You won't forget me?" she asks in a squeaky voice, her head lowering towards her plate.
"You know that to me, there's no one more beautiful" he whispers pulling his girlfriend's head towards his. "And I'll be home as much as I can… I have a family waiting for me" he smiles lovingly at her. She blushes and grabs his hand which was touching her face, before moving it down to her lower abdomen.
"You know… We're never probably going to be able to sleep again when they're born" Mamoru jokes hours later as he slides into bed. Usagi groans loudly, realising that she probably wouldn't be able to sleep for the next several of months as well. "Then we'd have to feed and change them and calm them down…It's going to be hard, especially for you". He notes. He receives no response verbally, but the quiet snoring next to him. He fell asleep next to her and not long after her."
The next morning was a different one. And all the same in a way. Mamoru woke up to an empty bed, Usagi gone from his side. He immediately looked towards the bathroom door before seeing the door was closed, and most likely locked only for her benefit. Slowly, he walked towards the door, tapping on it gently to let her know he was awake. He heard a groan and placed his hand on the door handle, and to his dismay, it was unlocked.
Usagi sat, her hair thrown up into a messy bun on her head. Her hands clutching the toilet seat and her forehead pressed gently against the toilet. His eyes went to her face, boiling up to a red and her eyes were puffy, he guessed from crying. He kneeled down next to her, placing his hand on her head. She looked up at him with a frown. "You need some water otherwise you'll get dehydrated" he mumbles as he walks to the bathroom sink and grabs out the cup from the bench, filling it up with the cold and clear liquid. She sips it slowly, her head leaning against his chest.
"You don't need to do this… I handled myself perfectly fine before you came back". Usagi breathes lightly aloud, her eyes closing and a slight yawn coming from her mouth. Mamoru smiled and ran his fingers through her hair.
"Why don't we have a shower and get changed?" he asks her, and she nods. He leaves her to have a shower, only to leave to the kitchen to make a small breakfast for her, and a coffee for himself. After a several minutes, Usagi came out of the bedroom. She was dressed in something she most likely didn't want to go out in public with. She was a baggy pair of track suit pants and one of her dancing hoodies. He smiled as she walked in and pushed the plate towards her, along with a small cup of water and beside, a few pills she needed to take.
"Overprotective much?" She grumbles quietly as she sits down and looks at him, expecting him to join her. He starts to walk towards the bedroom before his name was called from behind. "You aren't going to eat?" she asks him, and he flinches.
"No… if you haven't noticed, it's nearly lunch." He points out with a grin before leaving into the bathroom. He knew the shower couldn't be rushed, but he wanted to ask his fiancé something in particular he wasn't so worried about. So, he quickly dressed in a pair of pants and a short-sleeved shirt. Before fixing his hair quickly, knowing he didn't have to do much. He left into the kitchen, picking up the dishes he had left there, Usagi still eating as he decided to speak up.
"How would you like to meet the boys today? You know you've only ever heard them over the phone when I speak to you… but I thought it would be nice you know… meet the people that have been my best friends for the past two years in America…" he pauses, watching her intently for a reaction. Her eyes don't light up, which he found unusual, but her face held the smile he loved. She nodded.
"Of course, I will… if it's important to you then of course" she says gently. "Now if you don't mind me, I want to watch my show" then she jumps from the stool, leaving to go and watch her favourite show at the moment on the flatscreen tv. He smiled as he grabbed his keys and left her to go to his car. He called them briefly on the way, saying he wanted to catch up with them. They were all available and he smiled, parking his car outside one of two apartments he needed to go too. Kunzite and Nephrite walked out, laughing along with him as he walked to the car. Mamoru smiled as she stepped in, Kunzite in the front and Nephrite in the back.
"So, what's the rush? Summoning all the boys for a studying period?" Kunzite laughs, punching mamoru in the arm. Mamoru didn't even flinch at it but smiled. Kunzite had short, dyed white hair to his ears, parted in the middle, deep grey eyes and a pale but slightly tan type of skin. At the moment he was wearing a white shirt, and blue pants.
"No" He chuckles. "I want you to meet my Fiancé" he says, pulling his face into a grin. Kunzite grins and slaps his shoulder in a friendly demeanour. Nephrite sighed and shook his head, which Mamoru could see from the rear-view mirror.
"Really? Darn I thought we might actually do something worthwhile" He grumbles. "Can I go back please?" he begs Mamoru loudly. Mamoru grins back. Nephrite had quite the opposite look. Long brown hair, around up to his shoulders and deep brown eyes. He was dressed wearing a red shirt, and black pants along. The first thing to know about him was: He didn't get along with women.
"Nope" Mamoru laughs aloud, parking outside the front of a new apartment building. Zoisite and Jadeite walk out with smirks on their face as they sit down in the car seats next to Zoisite.
"So, what are we doing?" Zoisite asks with a smile. Kunzite laughs while shaking his head.
"We're meeting Mamoru's wife before the wedding" Kunzite explains.
"Well lets meet the unlucky lady" Zoisite jokes with a laugh. Mamoru flinched at that one a little. Zoizite had shaved blonde hair except for the middle, and green eyes. He was slightly paler then the rest of the boys, but his hair was slicked everyday for perfection. He was dressed in a blue shirt and denim pants as well. Zoisite was like Mamoru in a way: very good at studying when they needed to be.
"Hey, isn't this the pregnant one?" Jadeite asks confused. Mamoru sighs. He didn't know they knew, and he guessed Kunzite had told them all since he was in contact with Minako, which Usagi had set him up with her.
Jadeite was childlike in a way. Short hair and a middle part along with light blue eyes. He was the tanner of the rest, a beach boy as the boys would refer to him as. He wore a light green shirt and denim pants. Mamoru sighed as he turned the corner.
"Yes…my fiancé is the "Pregnant One" Mamoru quotes in a sour matter while looking at Kunzite for a split second as they parked in the parking lot. "Don't mention it though… she will get upset" he warns them as they step inside the elevator.
A minute later, they arrived at the apartment hallway which he knew familiarly. He walked to the grey door with the numbers 28 on it and opened the door. He walked in carefully, looking around to find the blonde-haired girl he had been waiting to introduce. She wasn't in the kitchen or study, but he found her where she was last watching her dramatic show on her small, grey chair. He smiled slightly when he saw she was sleeping but frowned when he saw her red and puffy eyes. She had been crying, and not knowing who, he looked at the phone.
Ikuko's name was on the screen, and the call time had been three minutes already. Ikuko was saying Usagi's name through the speaker and Mamoru picked it up. "Hey Ikuko" Mamoru breathed through the speaker. This only panicked Ikuko more that it wasn't her daughter.
"What's wrong with Usagi?" she asks in a panicked tone. Mamoru smiles.
"She's just fallen asleep Ikuko…You mind if I call you back?" he asks, feeling the eyes on his face and body right now, which was guarding his fiancé's face from view.
"Yeah sure… I thought she passed out or something". Ikuko breathed. "Alright, By Mamoru-San" and then she hung up. He placed the phone next to her as he shook her awake gently. She gasped and opened her eyes, staring into his own.
"Mamo" she said through breaths. "How long was I asleep for?" she asks quietly. Mamoru shrugs.
"We have guests" he reminds her quietly as he straightens himself up. She fixed her hair while her face colours itself red. "Boys… This is my Usako" he says. Usagi couldn't not notice the tone of dominance in his voice, letting them know she was his, much like the first time when she introduced him to the girls officially. "Usako this is Kunzite, Zoisite, Nephrite and Jadeite" he says with a grin. Each of them waves in their turn, all eyes fixed on her shocked.
"Hi" she squeaks before covering her mouth at the sound. "I'm Usagi" she whispers in embarrassed, her face turning a new shade of red.
"Your Usagi Tsukino?" Jadeite says shocked. Usagi shakes her head slightly, and Mamoru wonders what she's about to say next.
"Usagi Chiba" She whispers with a small smile. Mamoru grins proudly at her knowing that she didn't want them to know her as a pop star, but as his wife. A normal human where money didn't matter and a person as a whole. She wanted them to know her as Usagi Chiba, wife of Mamoru Chiba and the mother of their unborn child that she carried. Jadeite nods with a smile as he shakes her hand.
"So, you're the unlucky woman" Kunzite jokes as he shakes her hand gently. Usagi huffs and crosses her arms gently.
"What does he mean by that" Usagi asks in a yell towards Mamoru who was at her side. Mamoru smiles and shakes his head, trying to calm her down. "Mamo tell me" She yells, Mamoru knowing the wave of hysteria was to come.
"Nothing. They were just joking around." Mamoru reassures her gently. Tears start to pile up in her eyes before one runs down her face. "They just think that I'm boring and you know…I am but they think that anyone is lucky to not be with me and they certainly weren't expecting me to have a girlfriend until they caught me on the phone to you" He explains in a rush. "That's all" he shrugs with a smile. Usagi frowns and goes to speak before one of the boys change the subject.
"What do you think your parents think about the marriage and the engagement and the baby and all that?" Nephrite asks Mamoru gently. Mamoru flinches and shrugs. Usagi turns her head up to him in shock…
He didn't even, over the span of four years, tell them about the past he was supposed to remember. "You didn't tell them?" She asks him and he frowns. "These are your best friends, and you haven't told them?" her voice was almost louder now, growing decibels within seconds. She starts to push him out of the room gently, knowing he didn't want to be there when she explained but all she could register was the confusion. "I'll do it… I know enough and remember enough" He nods gently, leaving quietly through the door. Usagi walks back, hands in her pocket and eyes towards the four men before her.
"Why-?" Kunzite starts but she shakes her head.
"It's quite a short tale, but so long in reality" she muses. "And quite a sad one as well" she whispers. "I can only give you what he's told me…but what I have is enough" She starts, taking in a deep breath. "It starts with when he was born" she starts.
"Why when he was born?" Zoisite asks in confusion. Usagi just continues.
"He was born in august, as you know. His mother and father…he had parents of course just like anyone else. But he couldn't tell me more than his birthdate when he was talking to me, I can only assume that's all he knows. So, it was his sixth birthday, and Mamo and his parents were going out for a drive…only to accidentally drive the car off a cliff. I asked Ami a few months ago to look into the medical profiles of the crash… they say it was fatigue for an animal… all Mamo knows is that he survived, and his parents didn't…his survival came with a cost" she sighs, wiping her eyes free of tears.
"His parents died?" Jadeite asks in concern and shock. Usagi nods.
"Yes…and the worst part is that he doesn't remember them" Tears were springing out of her eyes left and right, frustrating her slightly. "He woke up…not knowing who he was and why he was there… they told him his name and I think still to this day, he's mentally trying to tell himself that his name is Mamoru Chiba, but I can be certain. He has the moments at night rarely when I see him and he's in Japan where he wakes up cold. I don't know why or what he was dreaming as he never tells me…I'm sure the same thing would have happened in America" She sees numerous heads nod and she frowns. "But now we begin the tale of how we found each other" she sighs, slightly smiling. She guessed Mamoru must have been listening, so she frowned when she saw him walk out of the bedroom, a frown on his face.
"I kept dreaming that I lost you…the same way I lost my parents…" He admits. "In a crash… and it was almost leading up to it in a way… then hearing you had been in it was…" he cuts himself off, choking on his words. "I thought I lost you" he whispers, just barely audible from where he was standing. "But it's alright now" he nods. "You can continue… I want to hear what you thought" he says as he sits down next to her. Usagi's eyes are sad towards him… only mentally realising how much trouble he was having… and why he was so hesitant to have a baby. He didn't have parents to guide his every move, but she did.
"We met because of Motoki…He's like my big brother figure, even though we weren't related, he still thinks of me as a little sister since he didn't have any siblings to begin with. I had a crush on him at first…then I slowly got over it learning he had a girlfriend." She blushes, knowing Mamoru would now know the truth about her feelings. "I went to the arcade every day, but one day it was different… he must have convinced his friend to come down to the arcade for once and that's when I met him… I was alone at first, then he came in the arcade and say down. 'Mamoru-San…This is Usagi-chan' Motoki had said. I didn't know until we started dating that 'Toki had been wanting us to end up being together, he wanted me to me his Reika like Reika was to him… Someone he loved."
"I was confused as to why all of a sudden he had showed up. 'Hi' I had said 'I'm Usagi' I held my hand out to him and he shook it. 'Mamoru' he had said to me. 'Mamoru Chiba'. Only then had I looked at him and I was surprised. But then Minako and Makoto were calling out my name and I left the counter. Saying my greetings to the both of them and left" Usagi sighed and shook her head.
"And then things got worse… he started being mean to me… calling me names. I didn't know that I was developing feelings for him… and when I knew… I avoided him so I wouldn't get hurt… it felt like he was following me, everywhere I went I felt like he was summoned to break me again. I stayed strong but was crying the same night in bed afterwards. The girls knew of course, they had advised to break my feelings… but I couldn't. then I turned around one night, yelled at him 'I don't understand why you hate me so much. I've done nothing too you. I don't even understand why I like you'. I was crying I was so upset, but as I ran off, he held my arm and said that he liked me too. He apologised then… he told me the story about his parents, and I realised… so I forgave him, and we started fresh" she smiled, and Mamoru let out a chuckle.
"It wasn't fresh though… We became nicer to one another and then, one night at Motoki's new years eve party, before midnight Mamoru walked over to me. We were talking for a bit and then we heard the countdown and he…" she wipes the tears off her eyes. "He kissed me. Motoki saw after he had finished kissing Reika, which was quick, but he thought we were drunk, or it was a miracle. It was only Mamoru's high school friends, 'Toki, Reika, Mamoru and me. I was really happy that night to get it out there… but I won't ever forget that night. We started dating that night, he had asked me out afterwards and I had accepted. We haven't broken ever since…" Usagi sighed with a smile. "I loved watching my friend's reactions when they caught us when I was supposed to be home like I had told them meanwhile I had been out on date nights with him. Naru had watched us from a distance once accidently after school when he picked me up and kissed me or held my hands, touched my back. Everyone was worried at first when they found out. 'Don't go and date him in case he breaks your heart again' one of them had told me. I said yes but they caught us… again and again and again until they gave up. It was my life." She smiles as she leans against Mamoru's chest gently, closing her eyes and reliving the memory of their first kiss.
"That sounds… like a very nice ending to a long story" Kunzite mutters with a slight smile.
"The unknowing of who I was eased up after meeting Usako" Mamoru says gently. "She made me better, made me who I was today" Mamoru smiles. "I guess you could say I'm the lucky one. In a way. Usako is the unlucky one though" he laughs, and she frowns.
"How?" She asks in a confused voice. "How am I the unlucky one?" She asks as they all started at her.
"You got Mamoru. You're marrying him. And even worse is that you're pregnant" Nephrite says, making a face at the word. Usagi blushed, hiding her face from view in Mamoru's body. The boys began to talk for a while, and Usagi smiled.
Maybe Mamoru was wrong? Maybe she was the lucky one?
