Entry 96: Magnet Nymphs
Beginning AN:
Oops I was looking through older chapters and I noticed that I said that these 100 would all be "Pre-Moon Lord." Well... yeah, I thought that would be a bit boring. Part 4 doesn't go to "the end," it's basically just a giant gap that's pre-Lindsey's mooks. Give you a little taste of the "third part" out of... three? Basically, this is "Hardermode," and right now Entries 76-100 are in the Hardermode equivalent to... pre-Queen Slime/Mech Bosses or pre-King Slime/Eye of Cthulhu. So yeah, technically, the "pacing's" slowed down by a lot.
"They can help us float?" Sonata asked in a cave rife with floating blocks of metal and pulses pushing and pulling things. Platforms were practically moving around like it was a video game. But, obviously, it wasn't.
"Wings. With a lot of flight accessories." Vince answered.
"Drat. Pushing things?"
"We've got strong arms already. And if we can't hold something, the Drill Containment Unit can tear it apart and we can move the pieces."
"Oh yeah I forgot we got that thing now. What about messing with electronics?"
"I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemies."
Sonata shrugged. "Fair point. Erasing someone else's porn would be downright vile. That almost happened, I mean, those fucking Pants-"
"What are you talking about?" An indigo Nymph twirling around a giant magnet bar said.
"We're just looking for things we can do with magnet stuff that we can't do with all the other stuff we found around the world."
"It's very easy to mess with electronics with them."
"Vince and I discussed that. We came to the conclusion, respectfully and after a long debate, that that would be too evil for us. I outgrew my 'I wanna be an all-powerful dark god figure with a harem drinking out of my hand' after my teenage years."
Vince looked at her. Sonata asked, "...What? At like, 17-ish."
"I- I thought- it would have made more sense to me if you said 'something hundred and teen years.'"
"Um... no. You think too lowly of me, my man."
Tania stormed in to the meeting room, right as the Magnet Nymph sat next to the pair.
"Oh, good, you're both here, and you have an extra teammate."
"I'm on break!" The Magnet Nymph said, eating a sandwich.
"...Oh, my apologies. So, Vince, Tania, we need to guard any Magnetic Field on the map. Our spies have information telling us that Lindsey's army plans to disrupt the poles with magic tied to this biome. It's unlikely that they can, which is why I am not placing this as red alert, but the results could be absolutely catastrophic for all of innocent-"
Sonata snapped her fingers. "The planet's magnetic poles!" She said. "That's something unique we can do with magnets!"
Everyone was staring at her. "...Sonata." Tania said. "The only possible use of that is to cause an apocalypse or at least a major shift in the world's ecosystem and place a barrier over the designated spots you want to 'spare.' That's Lindsey's plan."
Sonata sat back down, ashamed. "Right... yeah... still brainstorming...!"
Magnet Nymphs.
Pull or repell, these Nymphs are opposites attracting personified. Adventurers, wanting to stay alive. And them, wanting those adventurers to not be alive. Truly a match made in Hell.
Preferred Environment: Magnetic Fields.
Environment Threat Level: Beneficial.
Environment Stats: Dry. Warm. Moderate-Fantastic. Rare. Usually deep underground, highly magnetic zones that have enough force to even push away or attract people in full suits of metallic armor.
Other Names: Pulse Nymphs, Attract Nymphs, Repell Nymphs.
Affinity: Water.
Color: Dull Indigo.
Traditional Costume Weapon: Thin rings of metal, in small bands around their stomach-areas. Predictably, aides them with attracting and repelling objects, but also can be used to let them manipulate metals.
Vince's Comment: DON'T. USE. INORGANIC. ANYTHING. When going anywhere near a Magnetic Field! PLEASE! You can tell you're near one by holding a compass, and if it starts acting up. (It has to be an old-fashioned one, not an upgrade.)
Sonata's Comment: A lot of the Magnet Nymphs I talked to want nothing more but to move their things to the surface. Moreso than most of the Nymphs that are mostly underground. They can very easily fuck up electronics - not by accident, they can control that power unless they're like babies - so yeah. Never hold anything digital that you like around them.
I almost lost a virtual girlfriend that way. Good fuck.
Tania's Comment: Magnet Nymphs.
Nymphae Magnes.
Magnet Nymphs are technically guardians of some of the key forces of Terraria, as they can also manipulate the magnetic poles of the world - in theory. Of course, none of them are powerful enough, even if all the volunteering known Magnet Nymphs were gathered together to do so. Which is a good thing! The poles should remain as they are, for balance of the world. Still... should that power be used... I probably shouldn't even think about that, at the risk of sounding like a cheesy supervillain.
(Note from Sonata: No, do it! DOOOO IIIIIT! Sound like a supervillain!)
(Note from Vince: No no no stop... don't entertain supervillain ideas! I don't like the idea of an evil Dryad!)
Closing AN:
Day 29! The Last Day Before the Last Day! Tomorrow's gonna be a fucking DOOZY! So after the three last "regular" Nymph Variants, we'll have the End of Part 4, THE DRYAD ENTRY (DRYAD HYPE), the conclusion to wrap up the Nymphlopedia First Edition, AND after that I'm gonna post the first two chapters of Romancing the Last Dryad! Basically, this right here is the calm before the storm. (And yeah this chapter especially is kind of lackluster... sorry.)
You know I actually wasn't going to say what each day was at first, or at least I didn't really plan it? It was really just because Day 1 ended with "the horny chapter" (this was obviously before I wrote the Bonuses to dethrone that... I really need to update the beginning to correct that) that I went "oh wow what a way to end Day 1," and after Entry 6 I was like "you kow, this is the second day... might as well say that," and then that went on to me announcing the ends of all the other days and... yeah.
Yeah last night I didn't work on this quartet at all, instead again working a little more on the Dryad Entry, and also writing a bit of the next four "normal" ones to lighten the workload considering the seven chapters I plan to publish (To recap: 97-100, Dryad, and the first two chapters of RTLD). I... think this might be the most chapters of anything I'll publish in one day?
(Fuck with their affinity happening to be water from process of elimination - shit how many Part 4 Waters are there? It feels like most of them wound up being Fire or Wind, and I remember Earth being an issue - I'm really tempted to pump down a "Water, fire, air and dirt. Fuckin' magnets, how do they work?" joke... I still might in an edit.)
"Holy shit Vince has Vortex Armor and they have a Drill Containment Unit and you said bosses stay dead for good when they're killed unless they're part of a species... how much Luminite do they have?!" Exactly the amount needed for narrative convenience. In case this entire story didn't make this obvious, I'm taking serious creative liberties with the Terraria mechanics. Like giving the Mechanic a really fucking annoying brother that gets abused a lot and deserves all of it.
