A/N Sorry an update for this story took so long, but here we are. Third year and the summer before that (right now) are where the really important plot lines start picking up so here we go.
Also, I know that I skipped Harry taken the end-of-the-year exams. There are nothing special about these ones, and I think you all get the idea by now.
Harry was shaking as he walked up the middle of the aisle. He was currently in the grounds outside Hogwarts for the ceremony to honor the two Aurors that died fighting the basilisk and award all the related Order of Merlins.
When he got to the raised platform that had been Conjured in front of the rows of chairs the Minister himself handed Harry his Order of Merlin Third Class, officially making him the youngest person ever to receive the honor. Usually somebody would be expected to give a brief speech but as Harry was a minor it was his choice. Just the idea of talking in front of so many important people nearly gave him a panic attack (not really but that's what it felt like) so he promptly said no.
As such, he was only required to say "Thank you," and sit down again. But he was nervous and puberty didn't help so his voiced cracked in front of several hundred people, including the most important and famous in the country. Harry's face turned red in embarrassment as he walked back down the aisle to good-natured chuckles from the crowd.
When Harry got back to his seat his mom gave him a one-armed hug. "You're fine," she whispered.
The names continued, moving up to Second Class. Each of these were adults so the names were several minutes apart. The last person called up was James, who gave the expected talk about how honored he was and the bravery of all the men he helped lead down in the Chamber. After that everyone broke for food and to mingle.
Harry and Calypso stayed fairly close to their parents, who both ended up talking to colleagues from their work. Sirius and Emily were being watched by their grandparents and not at the convention.
"Ah, Harry, and Calypso as well. Just the two students I have been looking for." Both Potters turned around to see Dumbledore walking towards them followed by a women that Harry thought looked vaguely familiar. "Let me introduce you to Lena Schmitz."
Harry gasped a little as the famous German Transfiguration Mistress reached out his hand for Harry to shake. Harry was in a bit of a daze as he took it and shook it maybe a little to hard. Of course he knew her; the inventor of the Vanishing Charm (which while dubbed a charm was really a transfiguration spell to turn an item into air particles) and one of the only known Animagi in the world with the ability to turn into a bald eagle. "It's an honor to meet you Ms. Schmitz." He winced inside as his voice warbled a little bit. Puberty was the worse.
Lena smiled as she politely shook Calypso's hand as well. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well. I had been hearing stories about Transfiguration's greatest future star and figured I would ask Albus to introduce us."
Harry was shocked that a bit of an idol of his specifically asked to see him. "Well I hope I'm not disappointing. I'm only almost thirteen so I haven't had much time to learn magic."
She waved as his concerns as Dumbledore started talking to Harry's parents nearby. "No worries, of course you are still young. But, there is one thing I want to know."
"What?"
"For two weeks the Transfiguration newspapers were talking about how they were counting down the months until your first big spell invention. Any clue what it's going to be?"
Harry scratched the back of his neck nervously. "Well I have a couple of ideas, but they're all vague right now. And I'm still learning the ropes with spell invention so that's still a ways off."
"No worries. And if you ever need help," Lena said, Conjuring a piece of paper, "mail me."
Harry grabbed to paper to see Lena's home address on it. He looked up in shock. "Really?"
"Of course! Us older generations need to help the new ones out. How else is society supposed to move forward?"
Lily and James walked over just then and after some brief introductions Lena was called off to talk to somebody else. "I'd love to talk but work calls. Remember my offer Harry."
Lily frowned a little. "What offer is she talking about Harry?"
He held up the piece of paper. "I've got some work to do when we get home."
Calypso snickered as Harry continued watching Lena as she talked to some high-ranking German government official. "I hate to be the one to break it to you, but I think she's a little old for you."
Harry scowled. "Shove off Calypso."
A few nights later Harry sat at his desk with several crumpled pieces of paper on the floor. He was fairly sure he knew what he wanted to do, but it was so much advanced than he was.
Conjuring; like all magic, is still held under the Law of Conservation of Mass, stating that matter is neither created nor destroyed, only changed. What Lena did was figure out a way to transfigure objects into the particles found in air, effectively finally figuring out how to make something disappear. Harry wanted to modify this spell. If he could make it's effects work for a split millisecond before freezing, in theory the atoms would be stuck between the original element and the new one, a gas but held in place. Basically, it would turn any object into a gaseous illusion.
The problem was that nobody had ever done something like trapping an atoms between two different elements before, let alone two states of matter. If it could be done it would be revolutionary, opening up a whole new area of magic to explore, but it was something for experienced adults to try.
Harry didn't really care about that in that moment.
What he did care about was how to shorten the time the spell affected the item it was cast at to a mere millisecond. Usually short jabs were used for things like curses or jinxes; spells that often only had to hit the target to do what they are intended to do. Likewise; many Transfiguration spells used a twirl to lengthen that time, otherwise the transformation wouldn't have time to complete itself. Jabs while the wand is moving upwards would shoot a faster-moving spell than a jab moving downwards, but Harry didn't need that. He almost needed a spell that was just really small, but that wasn't really something people knew how to affect.
Harry grabbed another piece of parchment, this time to write to Lena. He told her about his ambitious idea and asked if she had any ideas or if he should just move on to try something simpler. Then he walked to the Potter's small private owlery and sent Hedwig off with the letter after showing her the address. Hopefully it was an actual offer.
With that taken care off, Harry went back to his room intent on working on the wording for the spell, making sure to avoid the spots on the floor he knew that creaked. His parents would probably be upset that he was up at one in the morning after all.

Calypso scowled as she saw Harry's report card. "This is just unfair. Half of the best positions for a subject are taken up every year. But," she said, smirking a little. "I bet it was Daphne that took the Defense top spot from you again."
"Oh no, I still got top in our year but only the best in three subjects, one of them a year up. I'm failing, whatever shall I do Mom?" Harry deadpanned. Calypso's scowl quickly returned.
"Be nice Harry," Lily admonished as she put a plate of breakfast in front of him and Sirius.
"I mean you did technically do worse this time," Sirius pointed out.
"Alright you can shut it little bro. Your observations weren't asked for here."
Suddenly the Floo flared and James ran out.
"What are you doing here?" Lily asked her husband in concern. "Your shift just started a few hours ago."
"I was given an hour break before I need to get back," he said, panting slightly from running. "Peter got out of Azkaban."
Lily gasped in shock as the three present Potter kids got wide-eyed. "But escape from Azkaban is impossible. Nobody has done it before," Calypso said, shocked. Kids sometimes tend to see in absolutes, and this was an absolute broken. Nobody escaped from Azkaban was a fact accepted as much as the sun will rise in the East or that the Earth is round.
"That doesn't mean it's impossible," Harry said.
"Your brother is right," Lily said. "How did something like that happen?"
"Peter is the only Animagus prisoner at Azkaban - or was I suppose. For reasons I'm not aware of the Minister was visiting this morning and in the bustle the proper protocols for an Animagus prisoner during a visit from the Minister were forgotten and he slipped out."
"Do they have any clue where he's going?" Lily asked.
"Well there's the obvious target," James said. Lily bent down a wrapped a suddenly pale-looking Calypso in a comforting hug. "A schedule is being arranged for an Auror to be guarding the perimeter of the property twenty-four seven right now. The first guard will be here within the hour. We'll keep you safe sweetie." James bent down as well and gave Calypso a kiss on the forehead.
"Daddy!" Emily ran in from playing in a different room. "I thought you were at work!"
James chuckled as he picked up his youngest child. "I just thought I'd stop by and say hi to all of you!"
"Hi!" Emily said, waving.
Lily chuckled as well. "Alright Emily, Daddy said hi. He needs to go back to work again."
Emily pouted as her father sat her down but then brightened again at his suggestion that she go make a floating fortress with her enchanted blocks. When she left, James got serious again. "I may be a little late getting home today."
"Alright." Lily and James shared a quick kiss. "Love you."
"Love you."
A few days later Harry once again sat at his desk late at night. This time he was reading Lena's letter back to him. In it she suggested that he tried something less groundbreaking for his thirteenth year, but that it wouldn't do any harm to try. With the letter she included a "little something" to help him. Harry gasped in shock when he saw the "little something." It was (according to the letter) a copy of all Lena's original notes she had while making the Vanishing Spell.
He spread the nearly two dozen parchments of notes over his desk, trying to make sense of all the chaos. There was clearly a system, he just needed to find it.
It was fascinating, even if he couldn't understand half of the math and arithmancy. The thought process was far above what Harry could understand, so he grabbed some textbooks and sat down again. He had work to do.
The next day was Saturday and James took it upon himself to spend a couple hours to start teaching his oldest kids to defend themselves with a mass murderer on the loose that might be specifically targeting them.
Harry stifled a yawn as his dad showed him and Calypso proper fighting stance; legs shoulder width apart and one in front of the other to turn the body sideways and show less surface area. He had gotten a grand total of four hours of sleep and it was catching up to him. He just couldn't resist staying up to work at night. No people to talk to, no discernible movement outside to distract him, just a half a days worth of uninterrupted work time. The only downside was the rest of his family wasn't nocturnal, at least as far as he was aware.
"You tired Harry?" his father asked.
"Yeah," Harry answered. "Just took awhile to fall asleep last night."
"Well if Peter ever find you, he won't care if you are tired or not!" At the word tired, James started casting a spell. Harry's senses instantly picked up. The spell felt like a stunner; and since he already had his wand out simply cast the specific counter-curse. The red and maroon lights met mid-air and died in fizzle of bloody light. After both were gone Harry was left pointing his wand at his father; who was doing the same with a surprised look on his face. Both noticed out of the corner of their eyes Calypso getting her wand up as well, albeit several seconds to late to actually do anything.
"I'm not that tired."
"How did you do that son?" James was shocked to say the least. The reflexes alone were pretty good, if nothing remarkable. But the spell he shot; the specific counter to the Stunning Spell warranted more attention. It was like Harry knew what James was casting before he finished.
Harry shrugged. "Lucky guess." He didn't know why he hid the truth from his father, only that he didn't want his parents snooping around what he was learning outside of the Hogwarts curriculum. Harry wanted to go places and didn't want any possible - inconveniences - later down the line. Just in case. It wasn't like he was doing anything wrong anyways.
James took that answer for the moment with a fair bit of scepticism. "Alright. Look, a dangerous man with a vendetta against this family is on the loose. I need to know you two aren't helpless out there."
"Yes Dad."
"Yes Father."
He nodded. "Then lets keep going. And Harry, try not to yawn again."
-Line Break-
The world is not a simple as many believe it to be. Point A leads to Point B and then to Point C. This is the accepted belief, but that doesn't mean it is true. After all, it was once the accepted belief that the Sun went around a flat Earth.
In reality Points B and C are constantly changing. If a man studies extra in college he becomes a great scholar, if he spends extra time on a basketball court he becomes a superstar. Even the ancient forces that run unseen through the fabric of our reality can't tell for certain until the Point actually passes.
In one tunnel of time a young boy blessed by magic rose to be a great scholar, leader, and icon. Advances in a society lagging behind the times, a new age of diplomacy and co-operation between very different people. A rare golden era sparked by a single person. Those same forces that blessed him could now only lament that it would never come to be.
Only because that same boy chose to hide himself from the world.
A/N So for such a long wait for such a short update. I set up my story lines and felt no need to add words that; in my opinion, would only drag the story out.
Yes, Lena Schmitz will play an important role in the story. Harry's decisions and abilities show here will also shape his actions as well. Not to spoil to much, but he will be the person to show potential but not the full extant , which is much more important than it sounds.
How do you like the last part? I thought it was a pretty good idea when I thought of it awhile ago. I still like it now that the words are on paper. Pixels?Anyways, if you don't understand it then you'll figure it out as the story goes on.
Happy to get an update out, I hope it was any good.
Review if you got something to say, those always motivate me. Even the constructed criticism.
