Otis was currently on his way home from his double date and subsequent visit to Ruby's house. He had time to process everything that had happened in the last few months, and he found himself thinking something he never thought he'd think, he loved Ruby, he really loved Ruby. Otis scolded himself, no, that couldn't be, he loved Maeve, right?
The more he thought about it, the less sense it made. Yeah, Maeve was cool and a good friend to him, but, why did he like her? He had spent the better part of two years trying to get to know her without much luck, she had told him about her feelings while he was in a perfectly happy relationship and then proceeded to ignore him when he poured his heart out on a voicemail. Otis shook his head, then thought about Ruby, how happy he was whenever she was near him, and this was even before they were a couple, even before they actually spoke to each other, before all of it, he still found himself stealing glances at Ruby, always making sure no-one saw him, he just couldn't help it. It was like he saw straight through her, he knew there was a lot more to her and he desperately wanted to see that side of her. He never saw her as the popular queen of the school, he saw her as Ruby, and he really liked that.
As he walked through the door he was greeted by Ola, who was looking quite sad. Of course, Otis knew why, and he knew he had to fix it.
"Hey, look, I'm sorry about this morning, I'm an only child and I'm not very good at sharing space, but I'm working on it," Otis said with a slight smile.
"Thanks, Otis, that means a lot," Ola said, returning his smile. "So, I see that you and Ruby are getting pretty close," Ola smirked.
"Yeah, I think we are... I hope we are," Otis fumbled while making his way up the stairs.
He lay on his bed after taking his coat off and hanging it on the door, he couldn't believe just how long he'd actually been interested in Ruby for, it was like once Maeve showed the slightest bit of interest in him, he completely forgot about her. He didn't like that because, for all intents and purposes, Ruby was his first crush. He was really interested in her. It was apparent: his feelings for Maeve had disappeared long ago and he wasn't sure if he even really liked her as much as he thought he did. His feelings for Ruby had been there a lot longer and were a lot stronger. He smiled. For the first time in a few months, he was sure of himself. He knew what he wanted. He grabbed his coat and walked straight back downstairs.
"Where are you going now?" Ola said, washing her cup in the sink.
"To do something I should have done a long time ago," Otis said, determination lacing his voice, he quickly opened the door and jumped on his bike.
"That boy has got it bad," Ola laughed to herself, locking the door behind Otis.
Otis pedaled faster than he ever has before, he never thought he'd be doing this for a girl, but he had always been the romantic type. After fifteen minutes he'd finally made it to Ruby's house. This triggered another thought, he was the only person that ever saw Ruby's true self, the person he knew she was all those years ago, he smiled to himself, he would never have thought back then that he'd be at her house, about to throw pebbles at her window like some corny rom-com. He could have just gone up to the window with no issues, he wouldn't even have to climb, but this felt alot more romantic to Otis, and that's what he was going for.
He picked up a tiny pebble and chucked it at Ruby's window. There was no movement, he picked up a slightly larger pebble and threw that, still no movement. He was about to chuck a decently sized stone when he saw a light flicker on, he dropped the rock and waited for something to happen.
He waited for around five minutes when he heard a door shut and saw the light turn off again.
"Oh you have got to be joking," Otis whispered to himself, he had no other option, he'd have to just knock on her window.
He slowly approached her window and lightly tapped it lightly, he heard a huff of frustration and some footsteps before he saw the curtains open, it took all that, to realise that this probably looked a little bit creepy. But he couldn't chicken out now, so he just stood there with an awkward grin on his face.
Ruby gasped when she saw him, she didn't know why he was herealthough she was very happy that he was. Her life seemed much more complete with Otis in it, he was like the final jigsaw piece to her heart.
"Otis, what are you doing here, it's almost one!" Ruby said, trying her best to sound angry.
"Hi Rubes, I'm sorry, but I needed to see you, to tell you something," Otis said, leaning into her room, Ruby rolled her eyes in mock frustration and let him in.
"Okay, what was so important that you biked it all the way over here?" Ruby giggled.
"Wha- How did you know I'd biked it?" Otis asked voice laced with confusion.
"Hm, maybe the fact that your face looks like a can of coke," Ruby said, sitting back down on her bed.
"Oh, I hadn't thought of that, anyway, I'm getting off-topic. Rubes, I came here, too, (to) well, to tell you that," Otis stuttered, his nerves were becoming very apparent and Ruby noticed this, she sat up and placed her hand on his shoulder.
"You can tell me Otis, whatever it is, you can tell me," Ruby said, placing a light kiss on his cheek. This helped Otis feel at ease, he knew that he could tell her everything he was feeling, and she would listen.
"Okay, well, I suppose I should start from the beginning. Rubes, from the moment I set eyes on you, I wanted to get to know you better, and it wasn't just because of your gorgeous looks, it was because I felt like I knew you when I saw you, I felt like I could see right through the Ruby that everyone at school knows, and ever since then I haven't been able to get you out of my mind, you've always been lurking in there somewhere, and I never knew the reason, but I think I know now. Rubes, I think... well... I know, that I love you," Otis said, not once breaking eye contact with Ruby, as he finished the sentence, he saw Ruby's eyes well up with tears.
Shit!
Oh no!
Otis was panicking now, had he said it too early? His hands started to sweat and his heart started to pump out of his chest, he was visibly distressed, Ruby noticed this and locked her hand with his.
"Otis, you don't understand how long I've been waiting for you to say those words to me, I love you too," Ruby said, smashing her lips to his, every ounce of her being was poured into the kiss, she hoped Otis felt how much emotion she was putting into the kiss (into this?), he was the first person she'd ever truly loved. After they broke apart, they were on cloud nine, they cuddled up with each other on the bed.
"I knew you were looking," Ruby said, lightly chuckling to herself, Otis raised an eyebrow.
"What? How could you possibly have known," Otis questioned.
"Because I caught you staring a couple of times, but as soon as our eyes met you span in a complete 180, I'm actually surprised you didn't break your neck," Ruby said, holding in a laugh.
"Why did you never say anything, you know, berate me for staring at you, I mean, you have a reputation to uphold right," Otis said, feeling a bit self-conscious, before the clinic, He was a nobody, and that's when Ruby had caught him.
"You're right, I do have a reputation to uphold, but the truth is Otis, I didn't mind you staring at me, because it felt really good, to have someone look at me for who I am, rather than just my looks which is all that the other dicks in school see, but not you Otis, you see me for who I really am and that's all I've ever wanted, so thank you," Ruby said bringing Otis into another passionate kiss, a kiss which was rudely interrupted by the sound of thunder, the pair jumped away from each other in shock.
"Oh, that throws a spanner in the works," Otis huffed, "I can't ride home in that," He sighed.
"You could always sleep here, you know, with me," Ruby mumbled, strangely, even after everything they'd done, she felt quite shy at that moment, as if she was asking him on a first date.
"A-Are you sure? I could always call a taxi," Otis stuttered, Ruby shook her head.
"Don't be stupid, you can stay the night," Ruby said with a smile.
"Okay, where should I sleep, the floor or?" Otis said, taking his coat off.
"The bed, Otis, you can sleep in the bed," Ruby rolled her eyes.
"Okay, are you sure that's okay?" Otis said, wanting to make sure that it was indeed okay.
"Yes, obviously I'm sure, now just get in the bed," Ruby huffed in mock annoyance, she secretly loved how much Otis asked her if she was okay, it made her feel like she was the most important girl in the world, which in Otis' eyes, she was.
Once they had got into bed, Otis made a bold move and wrapped his arm around Ruby's stomach, holding her close.
"You know Rubes, I've already lied to you," Otis said, a smile gracing his face, Ruby's eyes widened.
"What do you mean?" Ruby questioned, a slight tinge of worry erupted in her stomach. ("
)
"When I told you I wasn't in love with you last year, I think I was lying to you, I think I loved you then, but I just didn't know it yet," Otis said, holding Ruby closer than he'd ever held her before, afraid to let her go.
"Trust me, I loved you long before that," Ruby said, giving Otis a goodnight kiss.
"Goodnight Rubes, I love you," Otis said, closing his eyes.
"I love you too Oatie," Ruby said, just before she fell asleep, she felt Otis' arm snake it's way around her stomach, she smiled at this and snuggled closer to him. She finally let sleep overtake her as she was whisked away into a land full of dreams about what her future with Otis would hold, little did she know, Otis was having the exact same dream.
A/N: So, I really hope you all enjoyed that, and I hope it was written to a decent standard, I've never written a Sex Education fanfiction before so if anyone has any constructive criticism, please leave it in the comments because I'd love to hear it, it helps make my writing better!
Again, thank you all for reading!
[Comments: I think the main issue with pacing comes from the overuse of commas. It is really not a big deal and can be altered easily if you wish to do so, the rest already flows quite well!
I wondered when we get to the scene where both Ruby and Otis are present who was the narrator, who's point of view am I reading? Feels like it's a bit of both, I think it might make this a little bit stronger if it was only from one character (therefore not knowing how the other feels or what they think), but it works as it is.
I do not know of the original show but this is quite cute, gives a fluffy/comforting feeling and I think that's what you were going for.
Most of my notes are quite nitpicky, feel free to disregard anything you do not approve of: ultimately this is your work, and what matters is that it expresses what you wanted it to. I feel like it does its job well, hopefully readers will too!
Congrats on your first chapter, hope this helped.]
