Chapter 70: Charlie Knows
Third Point of View:
Charlie, Sue, Leah, Jacob, and Billy were at the Black's residence. They revealed the secrets but naturally, he denied them in his stubbornness. He was a man of logic and science. It just didn't make any sense to him. Even when he saw Paul's eyes and the animalistic growl toward him earlier that day, he still never considered the legends to be true. He was still hesitating to accept the truth. So, Jacob went outside and phase in front of him. Now, that got through to Charlie. Charlie was stunned and his face was pale white from the revelation. Jacob went back to the forest to change into his clothes, and he called Leah. Charlie went back in the house. and By the time Jacob gave a rough timeline what has happened since Bella came to Forks to Charlie, Leah came over.
Currently, everyone except Charlie were sitting down. Charlie was pacing back and forth in the living room with a vein popping up from his forehead. His face was very flushed, and he was breathing was slightly erratic.
Charlie said, "you-you knew, and you never told me, Billy?"
He glanced angrily back at Billy. Billy simply said, "I'm sorry. I-I'm the chief of the tribe. I have to keep up my own rules even toward myself. I couldn't make exceptions no matter how close we were."
He shouted, "but she was my daughter! My daughter, Billy. If something was going on with Jacob or your girls, I would've told you instantly, but you kept this from me?"
Charlie's voice went on higher note toward the end. Everyone was quiet. They let Charlie let out steam from being told the secrets.
Billy said, "I'm sorry..I truly am.."
Charlie sighed, "sorry…it's already too late to cry over spill milk."
He glanced at Sue, and she was looking down. Charlie said to Sue, "I am not upset with you, Sue. You couldn't tell me. Knowing Harry, he wouldn't have let you to tell me."
Sue looked up tearfully, and said, "I'm sorry, Charlie. Truly, I am. Honestly, Jacob and I have been discussing when to tell you, but I was busy with helping Ale….I didn't want you to find out this way."
He nodded slowly and he turned to Jacob. He asked, "You guys only considered telling me because Jacob became Alpha and… Alexandria came right. I notice things were different since she came to the picture…She isn't really Jasper's relative, right?"
Jacob nodded in agreement to Charlie. Jacob said, "Yeah, she isn't.. it was a front from telling you the truth, but she is from the different reality. The spirits chose her to come to this world to help all of us..If we had kept going, then things would've gone much more worse for all of us.. She is what we call the peacemaker. Peacemakers are chosen by the spirits to help the tribe to coexist with other tribes in the area to keep the peace and not to cause war among ourselves unnecessarily. The peacemaker keeps the mental state of the tribe stable through their guidance and comfort. They helped the Alpha to make decisions and go through each challenge through their intuition and wisdom. The peacemaker helps the wolves to be more in tune with their humanity. Remember the story of Taha Aki and the Third Wife? The Third Wife was the peacemaker for that generation. She gave me the push to take on my role as Alpha after the newborn battle with Victoria... From my journey in the spirit world, I was able to figure out how to improve the pack and hopefully the reservation in the future."
Charlie asked, "how..did she have babies so quickly? Last time I seen her, she was just pregnant."
Jacob half smiled, and he said, "that is a long story." Jacob proceeds to tell him about imprinting, how Paul imprinted on Ale, how Paul did the mating ceremony, and how Paul gave Ale the fertility claim during Ale's pregnancy.
Charlie stared at him for a moment. He pondered deeply of what has been told to him, so he said softly to him, "you have a good head on your shoulder, Jacob unlike someone." He was eyeing at Billy. Billy looked away in shame.
He said to all of them, "and now-now, she has become one of them and has a half-human child that I never knew about?"
He looked at Jacob in fury, and he asked tensely, "and you, how come you didn't stop her from becoming-becoming a v-vampire?"
Jacob didn't take any offense to that accusation. He knew Charlie was upset, so he didn't take it personally. Jacob said, "I tried, Charlie. I really did. I tried so hard to convince her, but you know how she is Charlie. She is stubborn. The more I continued to push, the more I was pushing her away..but it didn't matter on how much I continue to because she was mated to Edward. It was meant to be."
Charlie listened quietly. He rubbed his face in tiredness. He said to himself, "she got it from me.."
He said with a crack in his voice, "I-I never knew she was going through all of this alone without me. I was going out of my mind with stress when she fell into depression after that Edward left her…..I tried to separate those two when they got together, but it only made things between me and her worse..But, because she is an adult, I let her be with h-him.."
He got quiet for a while, and said, "now..you are telling me that it was 'meant to be'? She was meant to abandon her human life to be..a vampire?"
Jacob nodded sadly to Charlie. He said, "how do you know that? What if ..the-the Volutri said that to take my daughter away from her parents? How can I face this as a parent that Bella sacrificed her human life to be a vampire?"
Jacob replied, "Alexandria said so..Because she was from a different future and reality. She knew from how our world was told in her world…If Alexandria didn't tell me that, then I wouldn't been able to let Bella go. I would've kept fighting a meaningless battle to get her to keep her humanity, but she..didnt cherish it. Even before the Volturi was pressuring her to become a vampire, she wanted to become a vampire to be ..with Edward and the Cullens.."
Charlie sighed loudly, "what did the Cullens have that convince Bella to give up her human life..and leave her parents behind?"
His voice broke toward the end. Jacob said, "I-I don't know..maybe Alexandria know, but…Bella did care for you Charlie. That I know for sure."
Charlie snorted, "I think she just wanted me to not intervene,"
Charlie sighed and hung his head lowly. He sat down on a chair, and he said, "I-I don't know what to think anymore. It's so much."
Charlie said quietly, "What am I supposed to say to Bella when I talk to her on the phone again?. What if Alice sees that I know once I get off from the tribe? I know you said Alice can't see the quileutes in her vision.."
Billy suggested, "you could talk to Alexandria? She probably knows."
Jacob said scoldingly, "Dad..Ale just gave birth. I don't think Paul would want her to exert herself any time soon."
Billy said, "maybe later on?"
Jacob looked at Leah, and Leah shrugged, "maybe. We can do it by the phone soon?"
Charlie simply nodded. He said, "I..appreciate the thought, but it would be best to not bother those two anytime soon."
Charlie was afraid of Paul. He didn't want to upset him any further. Charlie's phone rang. He pull out his phone from his pocket, and he answered. Once he was off from the conversation, he said, "I..need to go back to the office. They need me."
Billy and Sue nodded. Charlie got up from the chair and walked toward the back door when Sue asked, "are..we okay?"
Charlie didn't turn around, but he said slowly, "I..need time to wrap my head around this Sue..Can I get a raincheck for that dinner?"
Sue smiled softly, "of course, Charlie."
He nodded stiffly as he left the front door, got on his police cruiser and drove toward back to Forks.
Jacob said, "well, that turn out better than I thought."
Leah said simply, "yeah."
Jacob said, "I'll need to tell the council and the rest of the pack about this. We don't know how the Cullens going to react to Charlie finding out, but I will…call Paul later. I will give Paul and Ale time to get adjusted to their new lifestyle, and I tell Ale personally on how to tell the Cullens before Charlie talks to Bella again."
Everyone nodded. Billy wheeled himself away to his room to be alone for a while. He was next to his nightstand, and he was holding a picture of Sarah Black. He said quietly to her, "what would you have done? Would you have told Charlie?"
Jacob was by the doorway, listening to Billy without Billy noticing before walking out of the house with Leah.
