Chapter 5: Nursery Mayhem

I swear I've seen Mendaxmon before, but when? Chelsie stared down at the egg in her arms, it was twitching slightly, and she swore she could feel a peaceful heartbeat coming from inside. If only my bag was brought here, then I could've checked if I had its card.

"And over there is where us Protomon are supposed to be raised and hatched, but its only a rare occurrence when an egg even appears there." Alrhinomon shook its head as it stared into the open field, filled with toys and empty nests. A few small Protomon were in the area, they seemed to be playing together, tossing a ball twice the size of them, between each other. Two members of the group were pale yellow, with leaves on top of their heads, a green antenna behind them, as if to mimic a tail. One of the members was black, with three red spheres on top of its head, a red stripe connecting them to its mouth. Its antennas were the same yellowish-gold colour as its eyes, two pairs on each side of its body, as if to mimic whiskers. One of the larger members was an extremely pale red, with spikes on the sides of its head, and a can above its eyes. Similar to the smaller, pale yellow Protomon, its red antenna seemed to mimic a tail. The final member of the group was orange, with pink tendrils coming off of its head, and a sharp horn above its eyes. It had a pink face, and the two orange antennas on its head hung behind its head, similar to the tendrils.

"Some Sproutmon, Canmon, Bonimon and Tsuromon playing. They're probably one of the last things to be in that nursery." Alrhinomon shook its head, "maybe putting that egg in there will make it a little livelier." It stared at the egg in Chelsie's arms.
"I can't put it in there! This was a gift." Her grip tightened on the egg,
"yeah, and what if it hatches into a powerful Digimon." Jake added, "we'll need something strong to help us."
"Or maybe we need people with common sense." Cacomon mumbled, shaking its head. "It'll be safer for that egg to be in there, rather than here."
A look of absolute horror crossed Christina's face, "but we can keep it safe! We're responsible."
"Yeah right, children are never responsible." Alrhinomon looked at Cacomon, "and you only have one Protomon with a brain in this group."
"Are you calling us stupid?" Jake snapped, "because I can assure you, we're probably smarter than you'll ever be."

As the rest of the group bickered, Mentamon and Axomon sat near the nursery, watching as everyone continued fighting,
"should we break them up or…?" Axomon looked up at Mentamon, who was blankly staring ahead.
Mentamon shook its head, "they'll stop fighting eventually." It stood up, then turned towards the nursery, "while they do that, we can look around this place."

"Should we be worried?" The yellow snake Digimon asked, looking up at Fierimon, who stood calmly on the stone it was coiled around.
"We should be! Those children are nearly out, and Pardusmon hasn't even come back with him yet." It glared down at the snake, "we should be worried out of our minds, Lovimon! If they escape, we'll never be able to get rid of those useless Protomon." Fierimon spat, shaking its head, "at this point we'll need to do it on our own-"
"Or I could try and get rid of them!" Lovimon started to uncoil itself,
"how?"
"You'll find out when they're gone." It answered darkly, before slithering away, towards the park.

"You're so big! Will I ever be as big as you?" One of the Sproutmon stared up at Mentamon, it's small eyes sparkling.
"Of course you will! We're going to Digivolve into CopperZombieHippomon someday, and we'll be way bigger." Canmon replied, "and we'll be way stronger too."

Mentamon and Axomon had only just entered the Protomon nursery a few minutes ago, but they already seemed to have the attention of the only five Protomon already occupying the space.

"Can I ride on Mentamon?" Bonimon asked Tsuromon, its yellow eyes shimmering with joy, "of course you can. Don't need to ask me for permission." Axomon lifted up the black and red, spherical Protomon, then gently placed it on Mentamon's back. The only reason why Axomon was even able to put Bonimon up there was because it was standing securely on an oddly placed, cubic cushion.

"I'm super high up now! Way higher than you guys!" Bonimon cheered, bouncing on Mentamon's back carelessly.
Mentamon slightly turned its head, "I would be careful, you might fall-"
Crash!
"-off." Bonimon looked at Mentamon's face, "but I didn't fall." It stopped bouncing. Axomon glanced around,
Crash!
"I don't think it's some falling, I think it's something worse…" Axomon spoke, before looking at were the crashing sounds seemed to be coming from. From the shadows of the brightly coloured trees surrounding the nursery, Axomon could see a strange, purple glow coming from the darkness. A strange, forced roar came from where the purple glow seemed to be, and, as if timed, a Protomon left the shadows.

It stared ahead at Axomon with closed, circular eyes. A strange, green light seemed to emanate from its eyes as well.

Is that another Mentamon?

"What do you mean? The egg is safe, we've kept it safe for a good few hours." Jake snapped at Alrhinomon, "and we can keep it safe for even longer."
"Not until you drop it and smash the thing open." Alrhinomon spat back, its light blue eyes narrowing, "and that'll be any minute now."
Cacomon began, glancing at where the other two Protomon previously were, "maybe we should stop fighting. I'm pretty sure Mentamon and Axomon-"
"Shut up Cacomon!" Everyone shouted in unison, before continuing to argue.
"What do you mean I'll drop it? I'm not that clumsy!"
"Yeah, we don't have butter fingers!"
"You probably do, with how you're reacting!"

Christina looked back at Cacomon, who was frantically looking around, probably trying to find Mentamon and Axomon. She walked over to it, "what's the matter?" She whispered,
"they're gone, gone like the wind." Cacomon replied, flapping its wings, "and we need to go get them before they get into trouble."
Christina nodded, "then let's go get them."

The two began to run towards the nursery, "they're probably in there, playing with the other Protomon." Cacomon stared ahead, before it stopped gliding through the air. Its voice became tense as it stared at the nursery, "look." With one of its six arms, it pointed towards the nursery, specifically at what seemed to be a fight. Mentamon was standing completely still, crouched down, its tail lashing. In front of it stood a nearly identical Protomon, except its body was black, and its feathers were purple.

"That's a PurpleMentamon, but what is it doing here?" Cacomon shook its head, "they usually stay away from others." Christina stared on as the two Mentamon fought, "Light Scatter!" Mentamon leapt into the air as white energy beams shot at PurpleMentamon.
"Darkness Scatter!" PurpleMentamon leapt into the air as well, and balls of pure, black darkness shot into the energy beams, destroying them. The two Mentamon landed on the ground, before they began to charge at each other,
"Quick Tackle!" Mentamon slammed into its opponent, before leaping back.
"Reptilian Headbutt!" PurpleMentamon dashed towards Mentamon, smashing its head directly into its side, sending Mentamon rolling through the nursery.

They're just a strong as each other, Christina thought, neither of them will win at this rate.
She looked at Cacomon, "we need to help Mentamon win." She told her partner, who nodded.
Cacomon flew towards the two fighting Protomon, "Web Swarm!" It straightened its tail, then a stringy, white web shot out of its tail, splashing into PurpleMentamon's face. The opposing Protomon, turned its head to look Cacomon,
"Darkness Scatter!" Shadowy balls smashed into Cacomon, knocking it out of the air, letting it smash into the soft floor.
"Light Scatter!" Mentamon spat. As the white beams of energy shot towards PurpleMentamon, it quickly dodged each, before leaping towards Mentamon,
"Reptilian Headbutt!" It smashed into Mentamon, sending it flying across the nursery, roughly hitting the ground.

Without Chelsie, it won't be able to Digivolve. She looked at Cacomon, who laid weakly on the ground, its wings twitching, and Cacomon can't fight on its own, its too weak. She ran over to her partner, and now Mentamon and Cacomon are going to die, just because I couldn't help fight off PurpleMentamon. She held her partner, and wrapped her arms around it, a soft beeping coming from her pocket. I'm so sorry Cacomon. The beeping grew louder as a white light engulfed Cacomon. Her partner leapt away from her,
"Cacomon Digivolve to…" Its body began to morph. Its torso grew long, and its arms grew longer, another claw growing beside the original. The halo above its head vanished, and an extra pair of eyes grew along its face, smaller than the first pair. A jagged, lower jaw grew under its upper jaw, and two feathers grew on the tip of its tail. "Bugmon!" The light dispersed, leaving the champion-level Protomon, which buzzed in the air. It turned its head to look back at Christina, before nodding, then turned back to face PurpleMentamon.
Now we've got a chance! She thought, "get it Bugmon!" She cheered her partner on.
"Strong Winds!" Bugmon slashed both its wings and arms down, as it did so, a turquoise tornado formed, and sped towards PurpleMentamon, sending it flying,
"Darkness Scatter!" Black balls of darkness smashed into the tornado, destroying it. PurpleMentamon dropped out of the sky harshly, landing clumsily on its legs.
"Snare Jaw!" Bugmon sped towards its opponent, before locking its jaws around the black Protomon, tightly gripping it.
"Light Scatter!" White beams of light shot down onto PurpleMentamon, making it howl in pain, before slipping out of Bugmon's mouth, its scales smoking at the areas where it was shot.
"Swallowing Shadows!" It spat, before disappearing into a dark mist. As the mist faded, the enemy Protomon was gone.
Christina stared at her partner, who had, only seconds ago, turned back into Cacomon. She ran over to it, smiling, "you did it! You actually did it!"
Cacomon stared up at her, "because of you Chelsie." It placed a hand on her chest, "you helped me Digivolve, through your love and compassion for me."
"But I didn't even do anything-"
"But you did." Cacomon interrupted her, "if you didn't show your compassion towards me, I would have never Digivolved, it was all because of you that I did."

The Sproutmon, Canmon, Bonimon and Tsuromon came over to them, with one of the Sproutmon on top of Axomon's back.
"That was so cool!" Bonimon stared at Cacomon, "can you show me how to do that?"
"Me too!" The Sproutmon beside chirped, its tail-like antenna wagging,
"Yeah, show me too!" The other three replied, their eyes full of excitement.
"Maybe when we come back again." Mentamon calmly spoke, shaking its head, "we need to go somewhere."
"Of course! We'll be back another day though." Christina smiled down at the small Protomon. They'll be back another day, but I probably won't be. I'll be home soon, and maybe I can even bring Cacomon with me!
