Chapter four: The Castle of Fyrien Part 3

Two hours later found the four of them scrambling over rocks, getting closer to the shoreline of the castle, which was slightly bigger than Camelot but not as majestic. Eventually, Arthur and Merlin, who were ahead of Morgana and Gwen, crouched behind a large boulder looking over the exposed shoreline. Nothing, no soldiers, no guards, all quiet. Something wasn't right.

Merlin frowned as he tried to catch his breath. "Are you sure we shouldn't try to sneak into the castle itself? It might be easier," he suggested.

Arthur shook his head. "No, the tunnels are a better bet. That way the element of surprise is guaranteed!" he replied as he went to stand up.

Merlin rolled his eyes and pushed him back behind the rocks. "No, no, no!"

Arthur gave him a glare. "Are you questioning my judgement?"

"No, no. It's, it's just, er...an instinct, that's all," Merlin lied, not having a great feeling about this.

Arthur turned around to survey the shoreline and snorted. "Oh, well, if you got an instinct, we should ignore my lifetime of military experience."

"What if it's a trap? What if Cenred knows about the tunnels?" Merlin asked hurriedly, his last try at persuading Arthur not to do this.

Arthur turned back to face his manservant. "I'm willing to bet my life he doesn't," he replied smugly. Arthur then got up and walked towards the shoreline, dragging Merlin behind him.

Arthur was in the lead as they reached the entrance to the tunnels. Merlin was behind him and Gwen was after followed by Morgana who brought up the end. Arthur gave the signal to stop and they all flatten themselves against the rock wall.

Arthur looked in and frowned. "Here we are. Stay close," he muttered before walking in with Merlin and Gwen.

Morgana hesitated for a moment before she looked around and glanced over her shoulder to make sure Merlin wasn't watching. Morgana then took a deep breath before placing a ring that Morgause gave her on a rock. She then smirked as she felt her sister's presence nearby and walked into the cave.

Meanwhile, Arthur, Gwen and Merlin were walking quietly throughout the tunnels. Well, it looked like a catacomb to Merlin because of the skeletons lying around. He was so distracted that he didn't notice where he was walking until he got caught in spiderwebs.

"Blech, augh!" Merlin spluttered as his threw his arms widely to get rid of the webs

Arthur stopped to give him an amused look. "Stop worrying about your hair, Merlin," he teased before looking around with a frown, hearing Merlin mutter something about "very funny". Arthur sighed, somewhat relieved. "It's a good sign. Means that no one's been down here."

Gwen walked around and separated some cob webs and a skeleton popped out. Gwen screamed in shock and Merlin gasped. With Arthur's torch, the light revealed more several skeletons scattered across the ground.

"Caerleon's last stand," Arthur said quietly.

Merlin then realised something was wrong and looked around. "Where's Morgana?"

"I'm here," Morgana said, coming from around a corner which made Merlin frown.

"Stick together, everyone. We need to keep moving," Arthur said and they walked off. They walked further on when Arthur suddenly stopped which made the others freeze.

"Quiet," Arthur hissed and they heard distant footsteps getting closer to where they were standing. Arthur led them down another tunnel but more footsteps came from there as well.

"We're trapped," Arthur said.

Merlin pursed his lips. "How did they know we were here?" he asked quietly

Gwen bit her lip. "It was probably my scream. I'm sorry," she apologised as Morgana and Arthur drew out their swords. As Cenred's soldiers approached them, Mogana and Arthur tried to get rid of them but Gwen got captured and Arthur was forced to surrender. All of them were tied up and were dragged and pushed to the throne room where Cenred was sitting on the throne, smirking. Smug bastard.

"Well, well, Arthur Pendragon. How kind of you to pay me a visit," he said and got up as he looked at Morgana, Merlin and Gwen. "And it looks like you've bought some friends with you. Like the Lady Morgana... I heard a lot about you," he said to Morgana.

Morgana held her head high. "Get away from me, you pig!"

Cenred shrugged. "The more the merrier, I say," he chuckled and Morgana glanced upwards and saw Morgause smiling at them, she smirked slightly back.

"I'm the one you want, Cenred. Let them go," Arthur said.

Cenred looked at the crown prince and glared at him. "You're right, that would only be fair. But fair's for fools. Take them away!" he snapped at the guards who shoved them out of the room and into different cells.

Gwen was with her brother while Merlin and Arthur shared one. None of them knew what happened to Morgana. Morgana was dragged back by two soldiers. When she arrived, the guards shoved her into the room and Morgause walked up to her sister and hugged her.

"Morgana," Morgause sighed relieved. "You are unharmed, I take it?"

Morgana nodded but glared at Cenred. "No thanks to your men," she snapped.

Cenred smirked, sitting on his throne. "Forgive me, but we must keep up appearance," he replied while picking his nails, unconcerned.

Morgana turned to Morgause. "Where's my dear brother, sorry half-brother?" she asked.

Morgause smirked as well. "He's safely under lock and key."

Morgana raised an eyebrow. "Why don't you kill him now?"

Cenred laughed. "How cold-hearted you've become," he teased, ignoring the sisters glare.

"The Prince still has his uses. He knows more about Camelot's defenses than anyone," Morgause said.

Morgana shook her head. "Arthur will never tell you anything," she replied, dismissing the idea.

Morgause looked at Cenred with a smirk. "Cenred has his methods," she added and Cenred chuckled.

Merlin was bored. And when you have a bored warlock there will be trouble. He turned to Arthur who was looking at the ceiling.

Merlin sighed. "Why don't they just kill us?"

Arthur smirked slightly "Because Cenred will want to torture me first. Find out what I know," he replied.

"Aren't you afraid?" Merlin asked.

Arthur shook his head. "Nope."

Merlin raised an eyebrow. "How can you not be afraid of pain?"

Arthur continued smirked as a plan began to form in his head. "Because there's not going to be any."

Merlin frowned, feeling confused. "Right. So, you go into some sort of trance?"

Arthur looked at him as if he was stupid. "What are you talking about?" he snapped quietly. "There's not going to be any because we are going to escape from this filthy cell and rescue the others."

Merlin's eyes widened. "You've got a plan?" he guessed.

Arthur shook his head with a shrug. "Not as such," he replied making Merlin sigh again.

Ten minutes later, Arthur quietly finished his plan to Merlin before he made his way up the wall and hang onto the roof. Merlin waited for the signal before he banged four time on the door. When a guard opened the hatch, Merlin adopted a panic expression.

"The Prince has escaped," Merlin said and they unlocked the door and began to search around. "I'm sorry, I wish I knew where he was..." he trailed off and looked at the ceiling with a small smirk on his face. "Oh, there he is," he replied.

The two guards looked up and saw Arthur hanging onto two chains. Arthur smiled and dropped down, knocking one of them out while Merlin quickly grabbed the guard's sword and swiped the other one in the back. He fell over dead and Arthur looked at his servant with surprise.

"Wonders never cease," Arthur said slowly making Merlin chuckle slightly.

Arthur then grabbed the sword off Merlin as he walked out. Several corridors down, they found a guard outside Gwen's and Elyan's cell.

Arthur sighed. "Any ideas?" he asked quietly.

Merlin smirked. "Just this one," he replied and shoved him in front of the guard who sprung to his feet.

Arthur laughed nervously, although in his mind; he was going to kill Merlin. "Hello there," he said happily.

The guard lunged at the prince and after a struggle, Merlin used his magic to make the guard's belt snapped. Arthur used this distraction to knee the man in the crutch before shoving him at the door, which broke under the pressure. Gwen and Elyan looked at them confused, yet happy.

"Are you two alright?" Arthur asked. "Where's Morgana?"

Gwen looked puzzled. "I thought she was with you two," she replied.

Arthur sighed. "They must be holding her somewhere else. Let's go!"

Arthur sighed in annoyance. "They must be holding her somewhere else," he muttered and ran off with the others following him. Arthur stopped after a while and looked at Merlin. "You, Gwen and Elyan go back to the horses," he said.

Merlin took deep breaths as he raised an eyebrow. "And what about you?"

Arthur shrugged, as if he was obvious. "I'm rescuing Morgana" he answered.

Merlin's eyes widened. "No, you can't! It's too dangerous!"

"Sorry, Merlin, I'm not leaving without her!" Arthur shouted as he turned and ran.

Merlin turned to Gwen and Elyan and asked them to go back to the horses while he went with Arthur. Gwen shook her head and Elyan dragged her towards the exit. Merlin ran towards Arthur and made their way towards the throne room.

Inside the throne room, warning bells began to ring which in turn made Cenred smirked.

"Arthur," Cenred replied.

Morgana's eyes widened. "You should have killed him when you had the chance!" she snarled.

Cenred chuckled. "He won't get far. My men will deal with him easily enough."

Morgana walked towards Cenred and glared. "Cenred, if he escapes..." she was interrupted by Morgause.

Morgause smiled. "Do not fret, Morgana. You are family to our brave little prince. He will not leave this place without you. And when he comes, we'll be waiting," she said.

Cenred drew out his swords. "And then, My Lady Morgana, you must play your part well," he finished.

Morgana smirked. "When have I not?"

What felt like five minutes later, Cenred held Morgana against him, one sword pressed lightly against her neck while the other one was pointed towards the door. Arthur and Merlin burst in, Arthur with his sword ready and Merlin was behind him. Morgana was seething. Merlin should be respected with how many times he saved the crown prince and yet he was practically submissive!

"That's close enough," Cenred growled.

Morgana looked up at Cenred in fear. "Please don't hurt me," she begged as she struggled in her captive's arms.

"One more step and she dies," Cenred continued.

Arthur began to side step around Cenred he held his sword up in defence.

"You're a coward, Cenred. Always were," Arthur taunted.

Cenred laughed. "It's cowards that survive, Arthur. Now put down your sword!"

Morgause came out from behind a column and walked forward. "I would do as he says," she said and smirked when she saw his face. "You seem surprised."

Arthur snorted. "Hardly. I know what you're capable of!"

Morgause smirked. "Oh, you have no idea," she said before she summoned a pillar of fire with her magic, which impressed Arthur a bit.

"Merrtorrsweoolhat!" Merlin hissed when Arthur became distracted.

The pillar of fire disappeared over the gale that Merlin conjured which made Morgana, Morgause and Cenred flew onto the floor, knocking Morgause and Cenred out. Bits of stone fell from the ceiling making a mess everywhere. Arthur handed Morgana over to Merlin who took Morgana's hand and quickly made their way through the tunnels. Before she left the throne room, Morgana quickly turned her head to see Morgause moving her head slowly and breathed in relief. Trying to bide her time, Morgana stumbled to the floor of the tunnels and groaned.

"I can't go on!" Morgana said, looking at Merlin.

Merlin snorted as he stopped. Yeah, he's not falling for this again. "What's the matter? Worried about your friends?" he taunted.

Morgana shook her head and moved her hand to wrap around her ankle. "No, it's my ankle," she whimpered.

Merlin raised his eyebrow. "I'm not a fool, Morgana! I know what you're trying to do!"

Morgana glared at him. "You know nothing," she growled back.

Arthur caught up to them and looked at Morgana on the floor. "What's wrong?"

"My ankle," Morgana explained. Next thing she knew she was being thrown over Arthur's shoulder. She struggled in his arms. "What are you doing?"

Arthur grunted under the weight. "Trust me, I don't like it any more than you do! Come on, Merlin!" he shouted and Merlin smirked in satisfaction at Morgana's protest.

The trio ran back to the woods where Gwen and Elyan were waiting with the horses. Arthur raised an eyebrow at Gwen as he set Morgana down.

"I thought I told you to ride for Camelot," Arthur demanded gently.

Gwen smiled at him. "You might be a prince, but I don't always have to do what you tell me to," she replied cheekily making Arthur grin.

However, as if on cue some of Cenred's men charged at them, Arthur took care of one and when he turned around, he found Elyan elbowing one in the face before grabbing a sword and swinging it in the side of the soldier. The soldier fell to the ground, dead.

Arthur raised an eyebrow. "Not bad," he complimented.

Elyan gave a small smile to the Prince. "Well, practice makes perfect, I guess," he chuckled and they all got on the horses with Elyan sharing Merlin's.

Arthur glanced at Morgana. "What did Cenred want with you?" he asked.

Morgana hesitated, eyes widening slightly. "He thought I knew about Camelot's defenses, but I told him nothing," she lied easily.

Arthur smiled at Morgana. "See, that's what men like Cenred will never understand. Camelot was built on trust and loyalty. We will never be defeated as long as we stay true to those ideals," he said and glanced at Merlin and Gwen who smiled at him. Arthur missed Morgana's lip curl in disgust and Merlin's smirk in her direction.

….

The next day rose and Arthur was at his table, writing a letter. A knock on the door interrupted his train of thoughts.

"Come in," he said and Gwen entered, carrying two silk dresses.

Arthur raised his eyebrow at Gwen in confusion. "What are they?"

Gwen smiled. "Two silk dresses... In case your father asks any questions," she replied.

Arthur smirked. Gwen went through Morgana's wardrobe to cover his alibi. "How's Elyan settling in?"

Gwen smiled as she laid down the dresses on a chair. "Really well. He's got the forge up and running and a place to live. He really appreciates all the help you've given him," she said before hesitating.

Arthur noticed the hesitation and smiled encouragingly. "Was there anything else?"

Gwen nodded. "I just wanted to say thank you for bringing my brother back. It means more to me than I can say."

Arthur continued to smile. "Well, it's like you said, Guinevere... It's what you do when you love someone," he replied.

Gwen and Arthur stared at each other for a moment, full of love and compassion before Gwen nodded and walked towards the door, going back to her chores while Arthur went back to his letter, both smiling at the thought of one another.

A/N: Wow, Thank you so much for the positive reviews! I personally love this chapter! However, I want to say that I love this adaptation of Merlin as it shows Guinevere as a woman of colour and considering with this #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement, I felt like I need to applaud BBC for making this decision! What do you guys think of this? I would love to know! I hope you stay safe if you decide to protest as I know things are being rough at the moment! I also want to say that I'm with you people of colour! We are all the same and bleed the same colour blood!

Kind Regards,
