A/N: Okay so before we start, I got a review from a guest so I couldn't reply to them directly but they said this which I want to address;

Guest Review: No offense, but shouldn't Morgana and Morgause be more on the ball about Merlin. Love your idea for the story but the sisters know about Merlins magic, that he's escaped from several extremely dangerous situations and turned the tide of several key battles. All the way back to the sleeping spell. They underestimated him in the show because of his station. Now they are aware of him, that he is capable of disrupting their plans. Having them behave so similar to the show seems to negate that. They were never stupid, so why wouldn't they learn from this?

The reason I did this is because Arthur still doesn't know Merlin has magic, only Morgana and Morgause do. So, because of this, Morgause and Morgana decided to wait until the perfect time to reveal this information. This is for Arthur's sake so he can grow as a character faster than the show gives him credit for. Again, more will be revealed in The Coming of Arthur episodes.

Now onto the story!

Chapter five: The Eye of The Phoenix Part 1

The light of the candles gave a warm glow, despite the heavy feeling in the air. Arthur sighed as he dipped his hands into the brass basin and splashed cold water over his face. When he was done, Merlin came quietly up behind him and helped him dress in white robes for the prince to wear on the night of his meditation. Merlin then draped a thin cotton white cape over Arthur's shoulders before stepping back in the antechamber. Arthur took a deep breath as he opened the doors to the throne room. Darkness laid before him, stretching every corner of the room. The only sounds were his footsteps thudding lightly against the wooden floors. Arthur looked at the statues of the kings before him, high above the throne as he kneeled down and closed his eyes.

In the antechamber, Merlin opened the door slightly, watching the prince with a slight smile. Then he felt Gwen crouching next to him. He glanced down and smiled at her before watching Arthur again.

"What's he actually doing?" Gwen whispered.

"Thinking."

"About?"

Merlin smirked and looked at his friend slyly. "You," he whispered and grunted quietly as she wacked his ribs. Merlin closed the door quietly, amazed that Arthur didn't hear them. He then turned to Gwen and hushed her quietly before saying, "He has to decide upon a quest."

Gwen raised her eyebrow confused. "And crouching on his knees all night is going to help?" she questioned.

Merlin nodded. "Yes. He has to transcend his body so that the quest is revealed to him in a vision."

Gwen frowned, not really getting it. "And you're going to stay here and watch him?"

Merlin pursed his lips. "Gwen, this is one of the most important days in a prince's life!" he said quietly.

Gwen made a oh sound before giving him a reassuring smile. Gwen then squeezed his arm gently before retiring herself.

He didn't mean to fall asleep. Really, Merlin didn't know how it happened. All he heard were footsteps which made him open his eyes to see the King and some council men walking into the throne room. The sun was just starting to rise over Camelot's towers when Merlin scrambled to his feet and quickly joined them, standing near the wall. He watched as Uther placed a hand firmly on Arthur's shoulder. Arthur slowly got up and turned to face his father, still in a daze.

"It is time. What is the quest you have chosen?" Uther asked, sounding as if he was dreading the answer.

Arthur took a deep breath. "I can see but one path, sir. I am to enter the realm of the Fisher King and find the golden trident spoken of in the legends of The Fallen Kings," he replied.

Uther pursed his lips and looked grim. "You do understand that if you are to prove yourself worthy of the throne, you must complete this task alone and unaided."

Arthur nodded, looking serious. "I do."

As Arthur went back to his chambers for a sleep before he can start planning for his quest, Merlin decided to head to Gaius's chambers to have some breakfast. He quickly filled his plate before sitting down and stuffing his face with some bread and soup.

Gaius looked at him disapprovingly. "You'll get hiccups," he scolded lightly.

Merlin rolled his eyes as he swallowed the bread. "Who was the Fisher King?" he asked before stuffing his face with blueberries.

Gaius paused and raised his eyebrow at his ward. "He was a sorcerer who lived many hundreds of years ago."

"And?"

Gaius pursed his lips. "Legend has it he was wounded in battle. The wound festered and the infection spread, not just through his body, but through his lands as well. His mighty kingdom was reduced to a wasteland, and it has remained that way to this very day."

Merlin stopped eating and raised his eyebrow. "But why is Uther so worried?"

"Some believe the Fisher King's still alive, kept from death by his magic," Gaius replied.

"Do you?"

Gaius shrugged. "Perhaps. Perhaps not. But the people of the north call the area The Perilous Lands. Few who have ever ventured there have lived to tell the tale."

As Merlin finished his breakfast, he began to get started on his duties. The young warlock ventured throughout the castle before Merlin made a stop to the kitchen. As he gathered the Prince's tray, he overheard the maids gossip on how Arthur is so brave going through this quest. Merlin snorted quietly to himself and rolled his eyes. Ten minutes later he made his presence known to Arthur as he laid Arthur's breakfast tray on the table before going ahead with his duties. Then Merlin started hiccuping which made him groan. Gaius was right, yet again. He kept hiccuping after five minutes which made Arthur sigh in annoyance as he perched behind his desk looking at different detailed maps. Merlin hiccuped again which made Arthur finally look up and gave Merlin a flat look.

"I ate too quickly," Merlin said as he started to make Arthur's bed. As Arthur looked down, Merlin hiccuped which made Arthur look at him. "I can't help it!" Merlin added.

Arthur sighed frustrated. "I need to concentrate," he said seriously. Merlin nodded and pursed his lips tightly. Thirty seconds later, he hiccuped, again. "I am trying to prepare for one of the most important moments in my life!"

Merlin nodded with a grimace as he approached Arthur's desk, curiosity won over him as he looked at the various sizes of parchment. Merlin frowned. "All these maps... none of them are the same."

Arthur snorted and nodded slowly. "Well done Merlin," he said, as if he was talking to a child. "Do you know why?"

Merlin shook his head. "Uh… No."

"Because hardly anyone's ever been there," Arthur replied, glancing at the maps again.

Merlin sighed and wanted to bang his head against the stone wall. "Couldn't you have chosen something a bit easier?"

Arthur raised his eye brow. "I'm meant to be proving my worth to the people. A quick trip to the lower town to collect a bundle of herbs probably won't cut it."

Merlin bit his lip nervously. "But the Perilous Lands are... perilous. Maybe I should come with you."

"What for?"

Merlin shrugged. "To… help out," he suggested.

Arthur sighed. "You really don't get it, do you? The task must be completed alone and unaided. That's the way it's been for hundreds of years. It's not about to change for you. Now, if you don't mind, I have some important preparation to do."

Arthur's tone was a dismissal order. Merlin nodded and went about to make Arthur's bed again. Ten seconds later he hiccuped which made Arthur sigh for what felt like a hundred times and looked at the ceiling as if it held the answers.

It was around afternoon as the markets of Camelot became bustling with people shopping. Two women were by a fabric stall, hoping to buy something that caught their eye.

Gwen grinned at her mistress as she placed a sheer orange fabric over her hair. Morgana smiled back before carefully folding it up and placing it on top of the pile. That was when a hand was placed on her wrist. Morgana turned and was about to scold whoever grabbed her, but something made her stop as she looked at an old woman dressed in black.

"Please, please, just spare me a few minutes of your time, Sister" the old woman whispered.

Morgana's eyes widened as she realised it was Morgause and nodded with a smile. She gently took her hand and provided support by holding her upper arm.

Gwen frowned as she noticed Morgana walking away. "My Lady?"

Morgana smiled reassuringly. "It's alright, Gwen. I won't be a moment," she said as she walked away.

Gwen bit the inside of her lip. Why was this making her nervous? Morgana use to help people, particularly disadvantage people by lending them coins or food all the time before she was kidnapped. Why was this any different?

Meanwhile, Morgana led Morgause around the castle walls so they weren't overheard.

Morgause grasped her arm. "We must be quick, Sister. This enchantment will not hold for long. Tell me, what has Arthur chosen as his quest?"

Morgana frowned. "He sets out tomorrow for the Perilous Lands," she replied.

Morgause smirked. "How perfect," she hissed before pulling out a beautiful ornate bracelet with an amber stone glowing in the centre of carved wings. "Present this to the Prince as a token of your good wishes. When the time is right, you must make a likeness of the Prince and bind it to the gift using the skills that I have taught you. When he does not return, you, Sister, will take your rightful place as sole heir to the throne of Camelot and in turn, will make Merlin be bound to you as your twin and the prince he was meant to be!"

Morgana smirked and nodded as Morgause hobbled back through the market. As Morgana returned, she heard Gwen gasp and turned around, her eyes widened in fright. Gwen quickly turned to her mistress.

"My Lady, are you alright?" Gwen asked breathlessly.

Morgana nodded, pretending to be confused. "Of course, Gwen. Why wouldn't I?"

Gwen still looked a bit shaken and turned to look at the old woman. "I... thought," she trailed off and bit her lip.

Morgana smiled, looking at the old woman. "That poor woman didn't have a penny to feed her family. I felt bound for duty, Gwen," she lied easily before walking off, leaving Gwen confused.

Today was the day that Gwen dreaded. Arthur leaving for a dangerous quest that could cost him his life.

Gwen nervously waited outside of Arthur's chambers, when Arthur stepped out.

"I know you have to go, but..."

Arthur smiled. "I'll be careful," he promised.

Gwen sighed. "For me," she said and Arthur kissed her before he left.

Uther and Morgana were gathered on the steps of the Main Square as Arthur and Merlin prepared the Prince's horse.

Morgana looked at Uther, putting on a fake concerned expression "You seem troubled, Sire," she said, softly.

Uther pursed his lips. "Arthur is the sole heir to the throne Morgana," he replied, sternly while trying to hide his worry.

Morgana smiled. "Don't worry. I'm certain a Pendragon will rule over Camelot for a long time to come," she said with a small smirk on her face which the king didn't notice

Merlin watched Arthur climbed his horse when he was magically drawn to the silver bracelet. He gasped quietly as the ringing in his ears left him.

Arthur followed his gaze and smiled. "Oh, Morgana gave it to me as a gift. Beautiful, huh?" he asked and rode off leaving Merlin standing there with a frown. What did Morgana do this time? Why would she give him an enchanted bracelet? Merlin frowned at the King's Ward before he turned and watch Arthur ride away. Whatever Morgana was planning, he was going to put a stop to it. No matter what it takes.
