Chapter six: The Eye of The Phoenix Part 2:

Merlin told Gaius what he saw and that he had a bad feeling about it. Considering, Merlin's track record with his feelings, Gaius and Merlin started to go through several books which contained certain jewels.

"You sure it wasn't a jewel?" Gaius asked, flipping through pages.

Merlin shook his head. "No, I felt magically drawn to it and it was brighter than that," he replied, looking at his own.

"Are you sure?"

Merlin nodded. "And if it came from Morgana, then one thing is for sure; Arthur will be in danger."

It felt like forever and they have gotten nowhere. Gaius sighed as he sat down on a chair.

"I'm not sure where else to look, Morgana," Gaius said tiredly as Merlin climbed the ladder higher.

Merlin sighed in frustration "There has to be something," he insisted.

Gaius pursed his lips. "We've examined every stone imaginable unless..." he trailed off and picked up a small book and turned to a page. "Merlin…

Merlin climbed down and ran over to his mentor. "That's it Gaius!"

"Merlin. It's an Eye of the Phoenix," Gaius replied, feeling grim about this.

"Phoenix?" Merlin asked, curiously.

"Some call it the Firebird. Its eye burns with a fire that consumes the life force of anybody it comes in contact with," Gaius explained.

Merlin sighed, dread bubbling in his stomach. "Arthur."

"The Eye will draw energy from him. If it's worn for too long, Arthur will die."

"I have to go after him," Merlin said hurriedly, quickly running to his room.

"This is not a task to be undertaken lightly, Merlin. You'll need help," Gaius replied gravely and Merlin nodded.

Later that afternoon, he packed up his back and rode out of Camelot. Why was it always up to him to save royal prats? Oh yeah, it's his destiny, right?

Night fell and as Arthur was setting up camp and laying down, Morgana made sure that Gwen wasn't in her room before she took out a silver box and made an effigy. Morgana's eyes felt warm as she used her magic to light it on fire before stuffing it in the silver box. Morgana heard the door opening and turned around, frustration growing inside her as she saw her maid entering without knocking.

"What is it now?" Morgana snapped.

Gwen frowned. "I just wanted to see if there's anything you needed.

"No. Get out."

Gwen sniffed in the air as she smelled… smoke? "Is something burning?" she asked.

"I said, Get out!" Morgana snapped again, looking a bit panicked.

Gwen bit her lip as she exited the room. Something wasn't right with her mistress ever since she was rescued. Gwen had a bad feeling about this.

Meanwhile, several miles away, Merlin rode his horse to a small village. The young warlock stifled a yawn as he made his way to the local tavern, trying to keep his mind focused on finding one particular person that can help him. He tied his horse to the post and made his way to the door. Upon entering, Merlin smiled fondly as he found the man being shoved across a long table with another man on top of him, glaring.

"Hello, Gwaine," Merlin greeted from his place by the entrance.

Gwaine's head moved and grinned when he saw the young warlock. "Ah! Merlin! How are you?" he shouted, happily. He got off the table and joined Merlin with a grin.

A bald man stalked through the crowd angrily and scowled at Gwaine. "Give me my money," he growled, looking threateningly.

Gwaine grinned. "Sorry!"

Merlin sighed as he saw the men continue to walk towards them and said two words. "Gwaine, run…"

Gwaine laughed. Yeah that's right, laughed as he ran throughout the lower market. Gwaine could've faced death right now and laughed. The two dodged the people and some stalls before hiding behind one. Merlin peaked his head out to see the bar owner looking around angrily. They ran through the passage and climbed up several stairs before looking over the towns defensive wall. This gave them a perfect view of not only the town, but the people trying to get them

"Remind me what you are doing here," Gwaine gasped, catching his breath.

Merlin sighed, ducking down again. "Arthur's in trouble, again. I need your help."

Gwaine looked confused. "What kind of trouble?"

"He's gone to the Perilous Lands."

"What are you serious?" Gwaine snorted as they looked down a castle wall.

"Yeah," Merlin said, breathlessly

Gwaine shrugged. "Just now, sounds pretty attractive." He muttered as they looked to see the bar owner making his way towards them. "All right go to the horses," Gwaine replied as they climbed the wall.

Merlin raised an eyebrow. "You have got to be joking," he groaned but jumped down anyway with Gwaine following him. Gwaine laughed as they rode away, leaving the bar owner angry.

The woods were eerily silent as Arthur and his horse rode through them. the only sounds were the birds that chirped to one another every now and then. Arthur didn't know why he suddenly felt drained. Arthur sighed as he pulled out the map he put together and looked at the view in front of them. The Perilous Lands were covered in orange and mostly sand, a barren land. He quickly glanced down at the map and saw the Dark Tower. Arthur put the map away and got off his horse which he led to a small lake. The only thing the Prince brought with him was his sword. After ten minutes of walking, he came across a delipidated looking bridge with a dwarf standing in front of it.

"Who is it that wishes to cross my bridge?" the dwarf asked.

Arthur took a few steps forward, slightly on guard. "A knight on a quest to find the trident of the Fisher King."

"Then you must be Courage."

Arthur shook his head, confused. "No, I'm Prince Arthur of Camelot."

The dwarf smiled and shook Arthur's hand. "I'm Grettir. I have to say, you're not as short as I thought you'd be. Before I let you pass, I'll give you a little advice, as Courage, there are two more things you'll need to complete your quest: Strength and Magic," he said, cryptically.

Arthur frowned. "I don't condone the use of magic," he said. Although, lately he thought that magic isn't necessarily evil. It's like a sword. You can use magic to protect or kill. But if he said this to his father, it would result in his head being chopped off.

"You'd be wise not to dismiss magic so freely. The rules in the land that you are heading to are quite different to those in the world that you know," Grettir said.

Arthur nodded. "Thank you for your help," he replied kindly as Grettir stepped aside to let Arthur through.

Grettir however, grabbed Arthur's wrist which had the Eye of the Phoenix on it. "That's a very beautiful bracelet," he mused.

Arthur pursed his lips. "It was a gift from someone very dear to me. She'd hope it would bring me good fortune."

Grettir smirked and let go of Arthur's wrist. "Did she now?" he asked "How very thoughtful of her," he added, cackling as Arthur continued to walk on, not noticing that Grettir vanished into thin air.

Arthur had one thought in his mind as he drew out his sword, magic is weird. Beautiful and sometimes dangerous, but weird.

Merlin and Gwaine were riding the same path as Arthur had been. Merlin was quiet, and that made Gwaine nervous. A quiet Merlin was never a good thing. Something must be on his mind for him to be serious. Merlin bit his lip as thought about Arthur in danger and Morgana's role in this. Ever since Morgana's near-death experience…. Again, she's been giving him mixed signals. One minute she looks like she wants to be his friend, the next enemies. He didn't understand at all. Merlin didn't tell Gaius because he knew the physician would just brush it off as being paranoid.

"Why were those men angry?" Merlin eventually asked

Gwaine shrugged. "It's always the way in gambling. You make a man a fool, he calls you a thief," he replied and Merlin smiled as he shook his head fondly. "How'd you find me?"

Merlin chuckled. "It wasn't easy, believe me. I've been to every tavern in Angard," he said.

Gwaine grinned. "So, have I," he joked making both of them laugh.

Gwen bit her lip as she fixed her mistress's hair. She's been having a bad feeling about Morgana ever since she smelled the smoke and Morgana snapped at her. However, she continued her work and tried not to let it get to her.

"You're so good to me, Gwen. Thank you," Morgana said quietly.

Gwen frowned and paused before shrugging her shoulder. "It's nothing."

Morgana sighed sadly. "You're upset with me. I know, I shouted at you last night. I'm sorry. What can I do to make it up?"

Gwen shook her head. "It's forgotten," she dismissed.

Morgana began to smile. "Why don't I give you some time off?" she asked and at Gwen's incredulous look, she laughed. "Don't look at me like that. I'm sure I can look after myself for one night!"

Gwen smiled. "That's very kind of you, My Lady."

Morgana took Gwen's hands gently and leaned in with a smile. "I'm glad we're friends again," she said and as she started to leave the room, Gwen's started to speak again.

"Before I go, I'll make sure everything's ready for your return," Gwen said, indicating to the bed.

Morgana smiled. "That's sweet. But don't stay too late."

As Morgana left the room, Gwen sighed. The bad feeling returned. Maybe she should stake out in Morgana's room tonight. If nothing happens then Gwen can forget about her worries. Gwen bit her lip as she quickly did her duties. Where was Merlin when you needed him?
