The three of them sat around the dining room table, Renee had set a plate of food down in front of Bella encouraging her to eat. She had clearly been starved, it broke her heart to see her daughter was nothing but skin and bones while covered in scars.
Bella quietly chewed on her sandwich and sipped her water knowing she needed something on her stomach.
Everything was quiet and awkward at the moment while she ate. Nobody knew where to begin. With the fact she's a witch and didn't know? Or about how she became intwined with vampires? Not to mention the shapeshifters though Bella had a feeling her mother and the man didn't know about them yet and it was only going to add to Severus's anger.
Bella decided to be the first, "So about being a witch…."
Severus snorted at her horrible attempt.
Renee sighed, "I'd prefer to know about the vampires Bella."
"Yea but the vampires have only been a thing for the last year in my life while I'm assuming being a witch started from when I was born so isn't better to get the LONGER story out of the way first?" Bella blinked up at her mother innocently while taking another bite of her sandwich.
Severus smirked, "She has a point." Smooth he thought as he looked at Renee to see her glaring at both of them.
"Really Severus?"
"Normally with a story you start from the beginning and since the vampires are present, it makes sense to start with the witch part so we can all be on the same page." He shrugged
Bella giggled than blushed when he glanced at her. It was nice to know her torture hadn't destroyed her. Nightmares can go away, scars can heal. She was a tough thing he couldn't stop himself from thinking and found himself impressed by the young girl. Something that didn't happen often. She would only make a more glorious witch after everything she had endured.
"Fine." Renee sighed. She reached across the table and placed her hand on top of her daughters and squeezed. "Bella honey… Charlie and I aren't your real parents."
"What?" Bella croaked dropping her sandwich.
"Than it's as I assumed?" Severus asked
Renee nodded and looked at her daughter, "Your real parents were Lily and James Potter. You were born as a twin."
"A twin? Lily and James… Who are they? What twin? Did they give me up?"
"I'm curious to this as well. Why was she not with the Potters when everything happened?" Severus was confused.
"UGH!" Renee groaned. "Just let me explain." She ran her hands through her hair and looked at her daughter sadly. "Yes dear, they gave you up. I took you when they decided that they couldn't look after you."
"BUT WHY?!" Bella stood up and slammed her hands on the table. "They kept the twin right? Why get rid of me?" She cried falling back into her chair and covering her face with her hands sobbing. "Why does no one ever love me back…" She whispered so quietly that if Severus hadn't been sitting right next to her, he wouldn't have heard it.
What did she mean? He noticed that Renee didn't seem to hear that part.
"Your parents were in hiding from a powerful wizard that wanted to hurt them when they had you and your brother. You were sick the moment you were born."
That grabbed his attention, "She was sick how? And what does that have to do with being given up?"
"As in infant she would run fevers and her body was weak but her magic was strong. Too strong for her little body, unless she was treated properly and her magic bound she would die. With the Potters being in hiding they decided it was too big of a risk to keep her while trying to have her treated. It would give away their location so they decided to leave Bella at the hospital…"
"To die you mean." He growled.
"Yes.."
"But you didn't leave me…" Bella looked at her mother.
"No sweetheart, I would never. They had asked me to be your godmother along with your brother but once I found out what they did I went straight to the hospital and adopted you instead and brought you here. Where I could bound your powers and take care of you properly while keeping you safe as well. That's why I never told you about being a witch. I was afraid to give you your powers back and see you become sick again and I didn't want you to hate me because I wasn't your real mother." Renee looked down sadly.
"But you are my real mother!" Bella stood up and pulled her mother out of her chair embracing her tightly. "You didn't abandon me, you didn't let me die, you saved my life. Now that I know I'm not angry, I love you mom." Bella held her tightly as her mother sobbed uncontrollably.
Too many things were going through Severus's mind at the moment. He was happy for his friend that Bella was so understanding but at the same time he was anger at Lily for her betrayal was overwhelming. It was bad enough that she turned her back on him for that fool Potter but to do the same to your own child. YOUR DYING CHILD! Never would he have imagined her to be so cruel and callous.
"So what happened to them? My brother and…. Biological parents."
"Your brother attends Hogwarts school of wizardry and your parents were killed."
"Severus! You didn't need to say that so bluntly." Renee chastised
"The girl has had enough secrets and just survived torture for who knows how long. I doubt she wants to be tip toed around with the truth. She deserves to know; I only wish you would have told me sooner as well. We've been friends forever and I'm only learning this now."
"I'm sorry I just wanted to keep Bella safe."
"Something I can completely understand but you should have known I was trust worthy."
"Of course I do! I just didn't want to bring you into all of this."
Bella sat back down next to Severus. "What's my brother like? Do you know him?"
He sighed and looked her in the eyes. "He's a pain in my ass and a nuisance. He never pays attention in class and is always causing trouble."
"So you're a teacher? At this Hogwarts school?"
"Yes. I'm the potions master." He said quite proudly. It had taken a lot of hard work to become as proficient in the craft as he had.
Bella turned to her mother. "Do I get to go to Hogwarts?"
"Well Bella darling we would have to give you your powers back and see if you can handle them now." Renee answered nervously
Severus chuckled. "I don't think that will be a problem any longer. Look at what she's survived, she's already one of the toughest witches I've ever seen."
He noticed as Bella blushed at his compliment and send him a grateful smile causing him to look away and shrug like it wasn't a big deal. To her however it was. Rarely did she ever get any praise and his words gave her confidence, something else she wasn't used to.
"Still even if it worked she would be way behind the other students in their studies." Renee pointed out.
"There's two months until the next semester. I wouldn't mind helping her catch up on some of the studies during that time. It's not her fault she's new to magic. I may even be able to get my godson to help tutor her. He has the highest grades of all the boys." He thought magic may help her feel safer once again and maybe even build her confidence back up. The wizarding world was where the girl really belonged after all.
"Please mom. I want to try. I want to learn." Bella pleaded
"Fine but only if you tell me EVERYTHING about these vampires and what's going on Bella. I'm serious, you better not leave anything out. Don't think I've forgotten your side of this story time."
Bella gulped and sat down with a sigh. "You're right mom, I'm sorry."
Both adults turned their attention to Bella making her nervous but she wanted them to know. She had been on her own in this world too long now. "I met this boy; his name was Edward Cullen…."
It was a couple hours later when she finished her tale of how she became familiar with vampires. She truly left nothing out either. Bella told them about dating Edward, being his singer, meeting his family, being hunted and tortured by a nomad, the paper cut on her birthday last year, Edwards hurtful words and abandonment. Victoria's revenge. Too say they were angry would be an understatement. Severus had stood up and began pacing half way through her story and when she finished, Bella noticed a green shimmer around him that dispersed and shoved furniture away from him. A couple light bulbs near him exploding before he walked out the glass back door and stood outside mumbling words she couldn't hear but she was pretty sure he was cussing.
"He's sure angry."
"I am to Bella! How dare that boy do that to you and leave you like that! The family to, heartless monsters!"
"Yes I agree, I can never forgive them. Well except Jasper. Like I said he killed James to save me and tried to go after Victoria before the others stopped him. What I don't understand is why your friend is so angry? He barely knows me."
"Its not my place to tell you his story sweetheart, lets just say he knows what its like to be abandoned and he's angry that you had to endure that."
Bella's eyes softened and she nodded towards her mother while watching her future professor try to calm himself down.
After several minutes he walked back inside and sat down at the table again before speaking. "Anything else we should know?"
"Just that the local reservation is filled with shapeshifters. Their supposed to protect locals from vampires but when I told them about Victoria they wouldn't help. Said it was my fault for getting involved with the Cullen's and I deserved whatever happened."
"Fucking dogs." Severus seethed before smiling wickedly.
"Uh oh." Renee whispered leaning towards her daughter.
"I do believe we just found our test subjects for teaching young Bella some magic." He smirked.
Renee sighed before she looked at her daughter seeing an equally mischievous smile on her face. Than she groaned and shook her head.
"How about first we see if she can take in her magic?"
He nodded, "What did you bind her magic to?"
Severus and Renee stood up next to Bella. Renee pulled out her and Charlie's weddings bands placing them on Bella's fingers.
"Your magic is in them as is Charlies. He never used or learnt any magic though. He never liked it. Are you ready Bella? This will be painful."
"It'll be worth it mom. I don't want to be weak anymore. It's always felt like I don't belong here, like something was missing. I need this, please."
Renee kissed her daughter on the forehead. "Alright this will go faster with Severus helping. Grab our hands."
Bella took one of her mothers' hands and one of Severus's hands enjoying the warmth instead of the ice cold she was used to.
The two stood around her and began chanting. Words she didn't understand but she knew it was working when she began to feel a tingle all over her body.
Soon that tingle turned to flames that burned a million times worse than vampire venom and she watched as her veins began to glow bright green starting from her fingers that wore the rings, up her arms and continued to grow.
She began to scream louder than she ever had and tears gathered in her eyes.
Her head felt like it had been split and open right before she collapsed to the ground. The last thing she heard was her mother's frantic voice.
"Bella stay with me!"
Than everything went dark.
