Bella sat with Draco in their Defense Against the Dark Arts class as a teacher came quickly limping up to the front. Some type of a fake eye was nearly poppy out of his head and whirling around like it was mechanical.
She tried not to stare but was finding it difficult.
The teacher stopped in front of a chalkboard and began writing one word. Moody.
"My name is Professor Moody. I'm your new Defense Against the Dark arts teacher. I'm here because Headmaster Dumbledore asked me to. That's all. End of story. No questions."
Well that was straightforward… Bella thought but wondered why the headmaster had requested this man specifically.
"When it comes to the Dark Arts I believe in a practical approach. First which of you can tell me how many unforgivable curses there are?"
Granger stuttered to answer before any other student could. "There are three."
"Named why?"
"Because they are so unforgivable that they.."
The teacher cut her off. "That the use of them will give you a one-way ticket to Azkaban Prison. The Ministry says you're are too young to see what these curses do. Well, I say different." All the students looked scared but Bella was curious. She had heard of the unforgivable but she didn't know what they were or what they did. "You need to know what you're up against and you need to be prepared." Bella thought this made sense, after all, what if someone tried to use one against any of them? If they didn't know what it was, how could they defend themselves? These curses were created by someone which means others used them. "So which curse should we see first? Hmm." Moody walked up to Harry and Ron's desk. "Weasley stand."
Bella and Draco covered their smiles with their hands. Ron stood shakily looking as though he was going to piss himself.
"Name a curse for me Weasley."
"Well my dad mentioned one.." The redhead gulped. "The Imperio curse."
Moody walked up to a jar and pulled out a spider. "The Imperio curse gives the caster full control of someone. Takes away their free will." He said as he walked back towards the students with the spider.
Moody waved his wand over the creature, "Imperio." Using his wand he made the spider jump from student to student. Several of them looking as though they would cry and others jumping from their seats to getaway.
The spider then jumped on Draco's head and he froze. Bella could tell he was trying not to freak out, she grew angry though as she heard Harry and Ron laughing and clapping their hands. She huffed and scooped the spider upholding it in her palms. Moody smiled and let the spider stay for a moment before he moved the spider back into his own hand. "Scores of wizards and witches claimed that they only did 'you know whose' bidding because they were under the influence of the Imperio curse. But here's the question, how do we sort out the liars?"
Several students raised their hands in the air slowly.
"Bellbottom."
The boy she knew as Neville stood up. "The…. Crucio curse…"
"Exactly. You must torture it out of them." Moody said as he placed the spider down and once again waved his wand. "Crucio."
Bella sat up higher in her seat to look over the other students and watched as the spider squirmed and squealed.
Within seconds Granger was shouting. "Stop it!"
Bella sat back down irritated. How are the other students supposed to learn to defend themselves from something if they don't know what it does? She seethed. That could have easily been a friend or loved one under that curse and Granger was ruining everyone else's chance at learning to protect themselves and others. Did she think the whole world was sunshine and rainbows?
Moody took the spider and placed it in front of a teary-eyed, Hermione.
"Perhaps then you can give us the last unforgivable Miss Granger."
She shook her head.
"Anyone?" Moody asked.
"Avada Kedavra." Bella said. Curious as to what the last curse did.
Moody nodded then pointed his wand at the spider that still stood on Hermione's desk. "Avada Kedavra."
A small light shot from the end of his wand and hit the spider. The creature curled up and died immediately.
Avoid that curse, Bella made a mental note. Was there even a way to defend from that one? She wrote everything down in her notes.
"The killing curse." Moody spoke. "Only one person has ever been known to survive it and he's sitting in this room." The teacher looked at Harry.
So that was how their parents were killed. Bella had heard of the Avada curse but didn't know it was the killing curse. She continued to scribble away ignoring the looks of horror on the other students over the spider being killed. She wanted to snort but remained quiet, she was from the muggle world. Bella couldn't remember how many times she had run to her father to kill a spider she found in her room or the bathroom and those weren't even half the size of the one the teacher had just killed.
When Moody released the class, all of the students practically rushed out.
Bella walked beside Draco down the stairs.
"Thanks for pulling that spider off me. You weren't afraid of it?" Draco asked.
"Of course I was. I hate spider's but I wasn't going to let Harry and Ron keep laughing at you." She huffed.
Draco smirked. "Thanks."
She smiled at him.
A few feet ahead of them she could hear Granger whining to the others making Bella roll her eyes.
Bella tried to ignore them and just walk past but Hermione turned to her and started yelling grabbing all of the nearby student's attention. "You! How could you say nothing? You just sat there taking notes the whole time." She hissed.
Bella snorted. "Well, yea of course I did. What else was I supposed to do? Sit at my desk crying because I didn't like the class lesson."
Draco chuckled and shoulder bumped her. "Nice."
Hermione growled. "He was torturing it! Murdered it!"
Bella walked right up to her and stopped inches from her face. Again this girl was pissing her off. "Better it than my friends or family. Some of us would like to learn how to protect the people we care about if any of those curses were ever used on them. If you think everyone outside or even inside these walls are all kindness and cuddles then you're an idiot. The world is full of monsters and villains and I for one would like to LEARN how to protect myself from them. If you want to remain naïve and ignorant on how to face those kinds of people and curses then so be it but don't drag the rest of us down."
Bella grabbed Draco by the arm and started to storm off.
"I'm not ignorant!" Hermione shouted.
"Could have fooled me, Velma." Bella shot back and continued to walk away. A laughing Draco behind her.
