Chef Ramsey has never faced a challenge like this before. He only has seven days, today being one of them, to convince the man to let go of his dream of working side by side with his wife. A dream she wants nothing to do with. But first things first. He was determined to see a full dinner service and see if what the floor manager said was true.
When the restaurant reopened at five, Ramsey was ready. He'd changed into his chef's shirt and watched the team interact as they served the customers.
"Watch what you're doing, Samantha! Kena would never tolerate a smashed plate."
"Has table six been helped yet? Kena would have taken their drink orders at least by now." And he's no better in the back of the house. "Table thirty-five's spaghetti order is getting cold; Kena wouldn't appreciate it."
Mutters. "Then maybe Kena ought to work here."
"What was that?"
Louder. "I'm going to check on table number eighteen. I think they're ready for dessert."
"Very good, Vanessa. Kena would be proud of you."
The night wears on. Tyr evokes his wife's name like a charm as he reprimands his staff. Everyone is tired of it by the end of the shift, including Chef Ramsey.
Juan, a staff member. "It's like she's a ghost around here. Constantly on our backs, constantly judging. But who knows? Maybe she's like that in real life. She must be a nightmare to work for."
"Hey Tyr, two seconds."
"Kena would- oh, hey Chef!" The restaurant owner interrupted himself. He shooed the staff member he'd been talking to away. "What do you think of my operation, eh? You've been quiet all night."
"Does your wife know that you evoke her name like she's already dead?"
"What?"
"With all your 'Kena would' talk, you'd think she was a ghost haunting this place."
"Oh, I'm just trying to prepare the staff for when she starts working here. Kena's one tough-"
"No wonder she doesn't want to work here! You've turned her into a dictator to your staff."
"What are you talking about?"
"Well, she points out every mistake, every flaw. She's more like a nagging grandmother than a real person. I wouldn't want to work with her either."
"Hey, anyone who doesn't want to work with my wife, there's the door."
"Your wife isn't working here. And I very much doubt she's such a nitpicking shrew at home."
"I… I wouldn't know. We barely see each other at home."
"I'm not surprised with this attitude. If this is the way you honestly think she is-"
"No, no it's not. I just… I want her to be impressed when she does start working here. Like 'when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.' If the staff is perfect, she'll want to stay."
"Tyr, it's been three years and she hasn't 'appeared'. It's time to give it a rest. And I very much doubt that you terrorizing your staff is going to change her mind. Your wife doesn't want to be here. She's made that perfectly clear. She'd rather go where her heart is leading her."
"I'm her husband," he ground out. "Her heart should be leading her here!"
"What exactly do you think marriage is?" Gordon asked in awe. "She's not property to be inventoried and moved at will. She's a free-living person with feelings and emotions."
"I know! I just-"
"You can't just walk in and change her."
"I know, Chef."
"Anyone can see that she's happy with what she's-"
"She should be happy here with me!" he shouted, immediately lowering his voice at the strange looks he was getting from the customers. "She doesn't need to work; she's married to me and I'm worth plenty. Why can't she be content like my mother is? I should be enough for her."
"If she didn't grow up in the lap of luxury, you can't just expect her to change her personality for you. Marrying her meant that you accepted all the quirks of her personality, all the nuances of her character. You agreed to nurture her, not change her; not stifle her. And that's what you're doing, Tyr. You're crushing her spirit, punishing her for being herself. You can't think that she's going to take that much longer. Kena is a very independent woman, she-"
"She's stubborn all right. And bull-headed," he said with a fond smile. "That's what I get for marrying a Taurus."
"Tyr…"
"I'll convince her eventually," he said with a nod to himself. "I already proved that I can out-stubborn her when I convinced her to marry me."
"Tyr, will you listen to yourself? You're willing to destroy her happiness just to have your own way. That's the worst kind of selfishness."
"I'll be her happiness, you'll see."
[Second Commercial Break]
