Combined Sicktember prompts day 9: I'm Not Sick and day 10: Medicine.
He sat at the desk, eyes on the data pad, as the words scrolled. Every now and then Scott noted something down on the pad in front of him. Occasionally he took a swig of the coffee.
Scott was technically on downtime, that last rescue had pushed him over his hours. All that really meant was swapping from rescuing to reports. There were always reports to do. IR, TI, GDF, they all mounted up.
The morning had been fruitful.
There appeared at his elbow a plate with a couple of sandwiches and a fresh coffee, and Scott murmured his thanks without breaking from the task at hand.
He ate while he was working.
'I'm not sick, Virg. I'm fine.'
His eyes didn't leave the screen, but Scott could feel the eyeroll and the huff.
Scott carried on working while Virgil disappeared.
Virgil knew better.
12 hours downtime when there was a backlog of reports doesn't last long. Scott wasn't even aware of the passing time until a yawn caught him by surprise. He stretched and something pulled and he grimaced.
Time for bed. He stretched again and switched off the pads. Going down to the kitchen first to grab a bottle of water, he wasn't surprised to find himself alone at this late hour. What did surprise him was the medicine pot on his bedside table, alongside a handwritten note from his brother.
'Take these before you sleep – you'll feel better.'
Scott scoffed to himself. There was nothing wrong with him at all. So he brushed his teeth and went to bed and ignored the tablets on the table.
He definitely wasn't sick.
There was no call out that night, so the island's inhabitants slept well and slept long. So long that Scott didn't appear for his run and even Virgil was up before him. It caused some sniggering with between Gordon and Alan.
Virgil knew better.
He grabbed two coffees and headed up to his brother's room. There was no answer to the knock, so he entered. He rolled his eyes when he saw the meds still in their pot. Scott was still out of it, so he put the cup next to the tablets and made himself comfortable on the desk chair.
He sipped his coffee and waited.
Scott attempted to roll over and a cough erupted. His throat was sore but he couldn't stop coughing. Suddenly there was a hand on his back helping him into a sitting position and rubbing circles. Eventually he managed to get himself under control and he lent back against Virgil.
Virgil didn't mind being pinned behind his brother, and he reached around to feel his temperature. Yep, just as he had thought.
Scott noticed the coffee and he took a grateful sip. Virgil nudged Scott and he groaned inwardly, knowing what his brother wanted.
He reached over and took the tablets.
