A Pen&Ink double drabble.
The door slammed and he couldn't help but jump, heart in his mouth. Immediately the hand holding his tightened and it helped him relax.
He hated this. Every single part of this. The need to be here, back in the hospital, it grated on him, no matter how necessary it was. And it was needed if he wanted to get back out there, rescuing people. At least there was a silver lining.
Penny sat by his side, gently holding Gordon's hand. He was sure that she must be able to hear how his heartbeat sped up when she had squeezed his hand.
Holy cow, Penny was sitting right there next to him, holding his hand!
Maybe, just maybe, this check-up wouldn't be so bad after all.
The door opened again and the doctor appeared, called his name and smiled as both Gordon and Penny stood up, hands entwined.
The hands stayed intwined throughout the consultation.
They stayed entwined while they walked the street to the coffee shop.
They stayed entwined while tea and coffee were drunk.
He couldn't remember a single word about the consultation.
All he remembered was a warm hand in his.
And the hope in his heart.
