I haven't written in a while and wanted to give it a shot again. Tell me what you all think. Thank you for reading.
Autumn had finally come to the college town of Hillsboro. The once green leaves from trees littered the ground in an array of colors. Most mammals were heading home from their nine to five jobs or on their way to pick up a kit or two from school.
A wild dog was sitting on a park bench, watched as mammals of all species passed by. He too was one of those nine to five mammals. Taking a break from walking, he took a moment to think about his life up until this point.
" Hmm, let's see.. I'm 26, single and already a CEO of a company. Wow, I can't believe five years have passed by so fast. To think Kenji you started Black Wings inc. With nothing, but $2 to your name..." the painted dog said talking to no one, but air.
" Hey, Kenji. Talking to yourself again, I see. " Called out a female mountain lion.
" Oh, Hey Gena. Heading home to your family? " Kenji asked, looking up from his seat.
" Yeah, the cubs have been giving my wife the run around all day." She replied with a tired smile.
" Girl you look exhausted and ready to kill over. Do you want me to come over and lend both of you a paw with the Cubs? " Kenji asked, looking at his best friend and sister.
" No, no, I couldn't ask you to do that. You're busy enough running your company. You must be tired yourself."
With a wave of his paw Kenji stood up as he said, " Gena you've been like a big sister to me ever since we were both in the orphanage. So, helping you and my sister in-law with my niece and nephews is not a problem in the slightest. Come on my car is just down the block."
Gena smiled down at her orphan brother knowing he was right, but prayed one day he would have a family to call his own. The two walked over to Kenji's jeep and got in.
Once buckled up, he started the engine and pulled away. It was only after a few blocks of riding in silence before Kenji spoke up, " Gena do you like your job?"
" No, not really, but it gets the bills paid I guess. My boss can be a real hard ass at times, especially when a customer complain's to him. Why do you ask? " She replied, looking out of the window at the world passing by.
" Because a spot has become available and I think it's a great fit for you." He replied, stopping at a traffic light.
" I would love to take the position, but I have to talk to Kathy about it."
" Sure, I understand. And speaking of Kathy, how is she doing with her job hunt? Kenji asked following Genas directions.
" Not great. She's tried to get a job at two different high schools, but they both turned her down. Oh my apartment is right there. " She pointed to a brick building, making Kenji come to a slow stop.
Getting out of the jeep Kenji looked at the building Gena called home and thought, ' What a piece of shit! Oh, I'm so yelling at them both when I get inside. And look at this neighborhood, it can't even be safe for the Cubs!'
Following his sister, he was more appalled at the condition of the inside. The bottom of the walls clearly had mold on them along with graffiti and it smelled like someone had marked everywhere.
Taking the stairs to the second floor Kenji continued to follow Gena. But stopped when he noticed a small pup with nothing on, but a diaper no older than four banging on a door across the hall.
" Gena do you know that pup?" He asked as the mountain lion unlocked her door. Turning her head towards the pup she thought for a moment before saying, " I don't know his name, but I see his mom from time to time."
Kenji didn't fight for control as his eyes turned savage. Opening his mouth, he said, " Gena can you please go inside and start packing."
Gena looked back for a split second at her brother as she could feel his once calm nature had changed into a dark aura. The once colorful wild dog was now white as snow and she could see why just by looking at the pup.
The hyena pup looked starved and beaten up recently. But before she opened the door, she asked, " Can you toss me the pup?"
Kenji didn't respond as he walked over to the pup and picked it up by the scruff of its neck. Knocking on the door, he waited for a moment until someone answered. Holding up the pup as the door opened, he was met by another adult hyena.
" What the fuck do you want?" The male asked, looking past the pup.
The pup trembled in Kenji's paw at the sight of the male hyena.
" So, I take it you like hitting on defenseless kits." Kenji said before tossing the pup to his sister who caught him and headed inside before quickly closing her door.
Using his other paw Kenji pushed the other male inside as he said, " We need to have a man to man talk." before slamming the door shut.
Gena held the pup in her arms as she called out to her mate, " Kathy we have a big problem."
" What is it? Did you get fired or something? And why do you have Meca?"
Putting the pup down, she ushered the boy to the back room with her Cubs to play. Before returning to her wife who was sitting on the couch, " Kenji offered me a position at his company today."
" Oh, really! That's great we can finally move out of this hell hole. But I take it that's not all is it? " Kathy asked.
" No, he also told me to tell you we need to pack our things. I believe he was going to tell me that anyway, but after he saw Meca..." Gena trailed off as a scream of pain could be heard.
" Ugh, they must be fighting again. Wait, please tell me he's not in the building?" Kathy asked, looking at Gena before calling for the Cubs, " Guys get in here now!"
Four young bodies suddenly appeared from the back as Kathy got a look at the hyena pup. " Oh, my lord! Who did that to you Meca? On second thought, don't answer that. Gena I will go pack while you help Meca. Come on cubs, we need to get your things packed."
Gena had been busy helping Meca as she heard the cries for help just across the hall. She paid them no mind knowing Kenji wouldn't kill anyone, but the sound of a bone snapping in two made her body shiver a bit.
After Ten minutes the noise had stopped and a knock could be heard from the door. Gena had just finished getting Meca dressed before she turned her head and called out, "Who is it?"
" It's me Gena, your loving brother." Kenji answered.
The kits were all standing on the couch watching the door as Gena went to go open it. Once open Gena looked over the wild dog and could see no visible wounds. Letting out a sigh of relief she let him enter as Kathy spoke up, " Hey Kenji, long time no see."
" No, kidding Kathy. Is it me or do you keep getting prettier? " He complimented the feline before they shared a hug.
Kenji suddenly felt three sets of paws grabbing at his pant leg. Crouching down, he smiled as he brought the Cubs in for a hug, but noticed someone was missing. Looking towards the couch, he asked, " Are you going to stay there or come join the hug?"
Meca was surprised, but happy that someone wanted to hug him. Jumping off the couch, he hurried over and joined the hug with his friends.
