Hey, this is about my Inquisitor's story, which I know is popular to do around here. This takes place after Trespasser, but I didn't want to spoil any of the decisions made there, so only a few facts make it into this work. I was also having trouble with my other stories, so I decided to just make this one which was quick and easy to do.
The first thing that people knew about Inquisitor Verano Trevelyan was that he was a hero who defeated an ancient magister darkspawn. The second thing? He had the most bizarre collection of friends one could imagine.
Such as Cassandra Pentaghast. A Seeker who'd originally wanted to kill him because he'd been blamed for killing the Divine. A Seeker who was now the current Divine and had a small whirlwind romance with his brother Daniel.
Speaking of Daniel, he was the First Enchanter of the Ostwick Circle, and a master of fire magic and the Fade. Being half spirit of Wisdom granted him incredible knowledge and intuition, and he'd figured out how to cure the Blight one weekend because he was bored. You know, just casually fix the thing that had been a deadly, but thankfully very rare, disease plaguing Thedas for centuries. He also dabbled a bit in blood magic but no one ever tried to stop him.
The Inquisitor also had a son, Lyon Trevelyan, who was 17 by the time the Inquisition formed. He looked just like his father, and only a select few people knew who his mother was. The amount of people who knew could be counted on one hand. He took after his father as a warrior, but had wisely decided against becoming a Templar like his father had been.
Then there was Solas. He'd been normal, mostly, aside from the fact that he was an elven mage with a more than slight obsession with the Fade and spirits. Turned out he was actually an ancient elven god and Verano had known about it but not told anyone.
Then there was the famous author Varric Tethras, who'd codified his story after the events all went down. He was the most normal person there, aside from the fact that he was a dwarf but people learned quite quickly that that was nothing compared to other things one would find in the Inquisitor's inner circle.
Then there was his sister, Zehvvah Trevelyan. She was the head of house Trevelyan, half spirit of Purpose, and married to the Inquisition's Commander, Cullen Rutherford. She was efficient, sassy, and very skilled with her daggers. Formerly known as The Jewel of the Marches due to her beauty, it had surprised many that she had held off marriage and love for so long. But anyone who told her that was soon to be met with a dagger at their throat and a terrifying glare.
Cullen had a storied life. Formerly a Templar, he'd been there for the Hero of Fereldan's liberation of a Mage Circle, the Champion of Kirkwall's defeat of an insane Knight Commander, and of course, leading the Inquisition's forces. He'd managed to break free from lyrium, and had inspired many templars to do the same.
Leliana, or Sister Nightingale, was the Spymaster of the Inquisition. She was ruthless, efficient, and cold. She also had a soft spot for shoes and tiny cakes.
One of her scouts, Lead Scout Harding, was also included in this group. She used to just live on a farm and had given directions to Inquisition troops before being recruited into the fledgling organization.
Josephine Montilyet was the Inquisitor's wife, Ambassador of the Inquisition, modest and shy, but most certainly knew how to gather influence and command a room. Also, she had painful integrity.
Vivienne, Madame de Fer, was also a First Enchanter with a penchant for ice magic. She was confident and a proper Circle mage who had influence in the highest circles, even in a world where mages were shunned.
There was Sera, mistakenly called Red Jenny, even though she wasn't actually her and the title just got tacked on to her. She had a love for pranks and cookies, and was always ready to be inappropriate.
Warden Blackwall, or as he was truly known, Thom Rainier, was a criminal woh slaughtered an innocent family and then pretended to be someone else until he joined the Inquisition before he revealed himself. But Verano had saved him from the hangman's noose, and gave no care what people thought, saying that Andraste loved all and that there were no exceptions. He now served the Inquisition fiercely. He also had a wonderful beard.
The Iron Bull, also known as just Iron Bull or Bull, was a Qunari Tal-Vashoth. Formerly sent to spy on the Inquisition, a mission went wrong and he'd been declared Tal-Vashoth. His company, The Bull's Chargers, were like their leader, loud and unapologetic, but they certainly did good work.
Dorian Pauvus was a Tevinter Altus (though most people said Tevinter Magister, which is false), and also gay. Not that most people had a problem with that, just those in Tevinter. He was into necromancy, and very self-assured and properly groomed. He joked about everything and was in a relationship with The Iron Bull, but that had taken time to establish.
Cole was one of the most divisive of his companions, but he was nothing compared to what was to come. A spirit of Compassion responsible for murdering a previous Lord Seeker, he tried his best to help those around him. Then he became human. Scholars and researchers were still trying to figure that one out. It wasn't the last time Verano would perform such a task, but certainly one of the more memorable ones, even though he only did it three times.
Then came Pierre. He was like Cole, except originally a Pride Demon. He'd tried to possess Daniel, but since Daniel was half spirit of wisdom, it did nothing. He gradually warmed up to Daniel, offering him advice, but instead of turning back into a spirit preferred to stay a Pride Demon. Even though he wasn't even exhibiting demonic behavior much anymore. Then he possessed the body of an adult male dragon, fought off Hakkon, and was now a fixture at Skyhold. He still offered advice for those seeking to learn about the Fade though.
Then there was Tidarion. He was a mage who masqueraded as a Templar, practicing magic when no one looked. He even had a special schematic named after him, The Blade of Tidarion. Eventually he got caught, and the Inquisition took him in. Verano, being Verano, decided that he could go free so long as he brought his unique perspective and skill set to the Inquisition. Many people didn't like him, but Verano wasn't going to get rid of him, so they accepted it and eventually came to like him.
And then came the actual darkspawn. His name was Felandris, yes, like the plant, and he was a darkspawn. The first outside the original ancient Tevinter Magisters, actually. No one except those in the circle actually liked him, and even now he was just tolerated. He remembered his life before becoming a darkspawn, and had the ability to speak. He'd been alive the entire time and was known to cut open his skin to put his blood on his arrows to act as poison. He also didn't like other darkspawn very much.
So yeah, Inquisitor Verano Trevelyan had a strange collection of friends, which somehow managed to function as a cohesive unit. Yes, they argued, but they somehow managed to not kill each other, even though each of them had plenty of reason to hate at least one other member of their circle. But through Verano's sheer willpower and (mostly) Lady Montilyet's prodigious diplomatic skill , they managed to keep everyone friendly. Kind of. At least, they weren't actively trying to kill each other.
"Wow." Verano said as he held the paper. "This is surprisingly decent, Varric."
"I aim to please." Varric said.
"It is too casual, darling." Vivenne pointed out. "If you wish to submit this as a formal report, it will need revisions."
"'Gradually warmed up'?" Pierre asked. "I did no such thing."
"Yes you did." Daniel said. "I remember you telling me that I wasn't all that bad for a human. Admit it, you like me."
"I do not." Pierre refuted.
"You totally do." Daniel said.
"I'm just surprised that people don't hate me." Felandris said.
"You and me both, kiddo." Tidarion agreed.
"A storied life is certainly one way to put it." Cullen said.
"Oh hush, he couldn't go into all the details." Zehvvah said. "And you're going to need to add on my own children."
"Wiat, children? I thought you only had one! Are you pregnant?!" Verano asked. Zehvvah nodded. Verano turned to Cullen. "You better do your damnedest to keep her safe, alright!"
"I already do that." Cullen told him.
"Do it better!" Verano shouted at him.
"Hey, there's no need to yell at him!" Zehvvah said. "He's certainly done better than you!"
"I personally like how simple it is." Thom said.
"Yeah, super easy to understand." Sera agreed. "Got some shite humor though."
"That's true." Iron Bull said. "It's pretty dry."
"Would you like to try writing it?" Varric asked.
"Not at all." Iron Bull said.
"Sure, give it 'ere!" Sera said, grabbing a crayon from somewhere and then proceeded to draw all over the paper.
"No, don't ruin it!" Varric said, watching as the paper almost tore. Cassandra got in there to try and pry the paper from the elf's hands, but Dorian was just egging her on, asking for her to draw his portrait.
Josephine sighed. She had no chance of controlling these people, just minimizing damage. "Well, I suppose I could submit a report instead. Orleasian scholars will want the first look at it, and we can't have Sera's drawings covering the words."
"Why not?" Leliana asked, smirking. "Their faces would be priceless. Watching them try and be serious about it will be an amusement for the entire court."
"I suppose it wouldn't be too late to back out of the Inquisition?" Josephine asked.
"No." Leliana said, chuckling. "You're stuck here."
Embrace it Josie. You can't get rid of them. But yeah, I added some characters here that are specific to Verano's story. Six of them. Daniel, Zehvvah, Lyon, Felandris, Pierre, and Tidarion. Tidarion was inspired by the schematic "The Blade of Tidarion". I have yet to find an actual entry for it, as I just only get the schematic and never an actual item for it, but I pictured it as coming from a mage trained in two-handed weapons. And Tidarion was born. Felandris came out of musing that since Corypheus was a darkspawn with memories of his life and the ability to speak, what if there was another one? I know that some darkspawn can speak already, but they're bloodthirsty monsters with no memory of their former life. So that's how Felandris was made. And Pierre? I really have no explanation. He originally was just going to be a Pride Demon going through the same changes as Cole, but eventually became⦠whatever he is now. Not that I'm going back on it, it's just weird. As for Zehvvah and Daniel being half spirit? Verano is half spirit of Valor. It's a story point, but since the nature of spirits is that they change a lot, I had their father be like Cole, except that he changed depending on various things, being a different kind of spirit depending on the situations he'd recently been through. Hence why their spirit halves are all different. I know there's an author on here with an Inquisitor named Cantis Trevelyan, but unlike him Verano never had red lyrium. He'd quit long before he'd had the opportunity. There's a lot to explain, but their story is being written right now, I just have to get the dialogue correct. It's surprisingly difficult to find somewhere with it all written out. I'll also be posting smatterings of one-shots or small fics that may or may not be included in the final piece, mostly they're just there to help me get their personalities right.
