Chapter 2: The Acceptance
If you were somewhat confused in the first chapter
Then read this, because this explains it all
Cloud awoke with a splitting headache.
Oh shit. Man, I regret drinking that much he muttered, rubbing his head. Shulk was wide awake, playing video games on his computer. Pit was still asleep, snoring away. Link was awake, but for some peculiar reason, he was just staring at the wall.
Cloud stepped up to his hammock and tapped him on the shoulder. Link twisted around to face him. Cloud smiled, an awkward feeling arising.
"I hope you don't mind, but what in the actual living hell are you doing?" Cloud chuckled. Link didn't look amused.
"You were drunk and you missed it. Now go away." Link scowled.
"Well, I'm sober now. So can you tell me? And what does me getting drunk have anything to do with you staring at a wall?"
Link hung his head. Cloud looked wearily at him.
"Look, I'm sorry. But I'm sober now. So can you tell me?"
Silence filled the room. Except for the slight snore from Pit. Link glared at Cloud and sighed.
"Fine. But don't freak out, because what I'm about to explain is something you'll most likely freak out about." Cloud gave him a smug face and shook his head.
"Naw, I doubt it." Link slapped his hand on to his forehead.
A cool breeze swept into the room and brushed against Shulk's neatly combed hair. He could hear Link and Cloud's delusional ranting from the back and tried to ignore it. But it seemed as if the universe didn't want him to forget that they were going to be split apart..
"Last night, Master Hand announced we were going to SmashDivi," Link said, clearly irritated. Cloud looked puzzled.
"The fuck is that?" cloud said, sipping his black coffee(What Cloud drank as his "sober drink") that Shulk had brought over to him.
"A tournament, held at Agate Recreational Facility in a Pokeuniverse." Link explained. Cloud tapped his chin.
"Never heard of it. But hey, sounds fun. What's the fuss 'bout it?" Cloud took another sip of his coffee.
Link sighed. He adjusted himself on his hammock and began.
"It goes for month, we'll be put in dorms. These dorms will be our teams for the entire 2 months. There are hundreds of dorms. These dorms will go head to head in each division, doing their best to tower to the top. There will be 4 in each dorm." Link said, panting for breath.
Cloud lit up.
"AWESOME! We can be in a group and smash everyone and an-"
"Cloud.."
Cloud looked up at him.
"The dorms are random." He said, a glint of tear in his eye.
Cloud's body shook, and he rubbed his eyes.
"Hundreds of dorms?" Cloud said, beggingly.
Link nodded. "There's a teeny chance, if not no chance at all we'll end up in a dorm together."
Just then, an arm hovered over Cloud's shoulder and grabbed him by the neck suddenly. Cloud was startled at first but realized it was just Shulk giving him a hug.
"Whoa, chill buddy." Cloud said bouncing back. Shulk ignored him.
"I don't want to be split apart. You guys are my only real friends." he said, sobbing into Cloud's arm. Cloud awkwardly patted him on the head, but eventually gave into emotion and comforted Shulk. He realized just how downhill it was all going to get.
Shulk pulled the backpack strap over his shoulder and strolled out of the room. He was tired, but he knew Roy and Ike were expecting him. Roy, Ike and Shulk were put into a trio for a small tournament that was commencing a little before SmashDivi. Roy and Ike were nice guys and all, but Shulk hadn't talked with them long enough to be their friends. He'd make the occasional small talk but other than that, it was training.
Shulk was a bright kid, but very quiet and never open. He and Cloud had been best friends forever, and Shulk was regularly clingy whenever around him. A lot of people believed that Shulk liked him, but Shulk would claim that wasn't the case. In fact, they had a confusing relationship.
Shulk didn't want to jeopardize their friendship, so he kept his mouth shut. But each night he wondered if he did in fact like Cloud. Cloud would never like him back that way. He was straight, right? Shulk couldn't remember when Cloud confirmed this.
He'd just have to trust his gut and make the assumption Cloud was indeed straight. This lead Shulk to remind himself he hadn't confirmed whether he liked Cloud or not, again. Did he?
Pit awoke to Cloud spraying black coffee from his mouth all over the carpet.
"THERE'S NO WAY. YOU JUST GOT LUCKY!" he bellowed, slamming the controller on to the floor. At this point, Link was on hurling with laughter, rolling around on the carpet like a maniac.
"You..you let me win.." Link said, with breath rushing from his lungs. Cloud was fuming.
"I DID NOT. I WAS ROBBED." Cloud growled, gripping the controller tightly while replacing the FIFA disc with the Minecraft one.
"Oh so now you want me to crush you in servers? Alright then, Cloud." Link said smirking.
Cloud scowled at him.
"No, you idiot. I'm playing by myself," he said and shoved Link out of the way.
Pit laughed from the steps and walked down towards Link, who was now eating a bowl of cereal.
"Did you tell him?" he asked.
"Yep. He took it better than expected. Not good, just better."
"Hm. Where's Shulk?"
"With Ike and Roy. Should be back within the hour." Link responded.
Shulk picked up his phone. Cloud had sent him another one of his cheesy outdated memes. They were annoying, but Cloud knew how to make Shulk laugh. Shulk opened the door to their dorm to see Link and Cloud battling it out at Tetris. Pit was in the kitchenette, cooking up plain egg omelets, just the way Link liked it. There was a glass of chocolate milk on the bench so Shulk grabbed it and took a sip.
"How long have they-?"
"All day.." Pit said sternly, leaning into the bench.
"Enough Tetris for a life time." he continued. Shulk laughed.
"Pit?"
"Mhm?"
"Have you ever liked someone without knowing if you like them?" Shulk said, out of the blue. Pit chuckled.
"Whoa, where did that come from. But nevertheless, no I have not. I'd ask someone else. I'm not the good ol' "relationship guy"" Pit explained.
"Why don't you ask Cloud? He'll give you some pretty good advice, knowing him." Pit said muttering under his bed.
Shulk went quiet. He smiled and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Well, um, you see-"
Unfortunately, for Shulk, Pit was the kind of guy to read mines as soon as he suspected something.
"You think you like Cloud?" he whispered, just so Cloud wouldn't hear him.
"It's complicated, we've known each other for a long time."
Pit rested his hand on Shulk's shoulder. It was his way of comforting people.
"I know it's hard, questioning things like this, but I totally understand. Come to me if you need anything."
Shulk nodded.
"Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'm making omelets." he said cheerfully.
Shulk gave him a warm smile and hugged him.
"Thanks, Pit. You're the best."
