About Three Weeks Later: New Year's Eve
"Damn it, girl, come on!" Doc complained. Kate whooped and clapped her hands while Doc shook his head and went to get his knife back. She had beaten him three times already, and it was getting embarrassing.
"See, now his head is not in a good place," Lee was saying in her ear while Doc was loosening up his shoulders and balancing on one foot then the other. "You got him."
"Don't be giving her pointers!" Doc called, noticing.
"Who do you think taught her?" Lee countered.
"Come on, bring it," Doc said, holding his hands palms up and waggling his fingers at her.
"You go first this time," Kate gestured.
"All right, all right," Doc said, carefully aiming. He threw, and it hit the bull's eye. "Yes! Oh yea! Let's see you do better than that!"
Lee happened to know she could do better than that, but he kept it to himself. He watched as Kate aimed and threw, and Doc's knife got knocked loose and hit the ground.
"No!" he shouted. "Come on!"
"Four for four," Kate said. "Do you really want to keep doing this?"
"If I want to keep any shred of pride I have left, no," Doc replied. Muttering to himself, he went to collect his knife and go lick his wounds elsewhere.
"That's my girl," Lee said, putting his arm around Kate's neck and pulling her into him.
"You're right. He is a sore loser," she laughed.
"I heard that!" Doc called from the other side of the room, making them laugh harder.
"Are you a sore loser?" she asked Lee, and he made a face.
"I never lose," he answered.
"Ah, you did to me once," Tool piped up. "Remember?"
"That's because I was depressed and you made me do it when I didn't want to," Lee reminded him. "It didn't count."
"Pish posh," Tool snorted. "I won fair and square. You didn't even hit the board if I recall."
"I think I can beat you," Kate said.
"Oho!" Barney hooted. "This I gotta see." He moved a bit closer, as did the rest of the team. Lee twisted his lips as he looked at Kate, who was smirking back at him.
"All right," he said finally. "If you really want to lose that badly."
"I won't lose," she said.
"We'll see," he replied. "You first."
"Fine," Kate agreed. She threw and hit dead center. Lee shook his head as she turned to look at him.
"You don't scare me," he said. He got ready to throw, but just before he released the knife, Kate moved in and exhaled hot air into his skin by his ear. Distracted, Lee's aim was altered, and his knife hit the bottom of the target.
"Interference!" he exclaimed as Kate bounced away laughing. "You are disqualified!"
"I wouldn't call that interference," she argued. The others were hooting and laughing now.
"C'mere, you," Lee said, going for her. She shrieked with laughter as she ran away from him. He caught up with her in the lift, and she pretended to fight him off as he cornered her and picked her up in his arms, resting her back against the side of the lift.
"You're nothing but trouble," he commented.
"I saved you from losing for real in front of your friends," she reasoned.
"Now you're just being a comedian," he said as he reached to tickle under her arms.
"No! Stop!" she laughed, smacking his back to make him stop. "I'll make it up to you. I promise."
"Rematch," he said as he lowered her back to her feet.
"Not what I was thinking," she shook her head.
"Rematch and then whatever it is you're thinking," he grinned.
"I don't want your friends to think you're bad a throwing knives," she started, and he moved to pinch her, making her shriek again. "Okay! Okay! Rematch."
The lift stopped now, and they were upstairs. They stepped into the hallway, and they heard the lift going back down.
"Well, we're here now," Lee gestured at his door. Kate playfully shoved him, and he caught her arm and pulled her into him, catching her lips with his. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back.
"I'll win later," she agreed during a pause.
"That's what you think," he replied.
"I don't think. I know," she countered.
"Cocky," he retorted.
"Confident," she corrected, smirking until he kissed it off her face. They stood there in the hallway making out until:
"Get a room," Gunner said as he came off the lift and saw them.
"We're working on it," Lee answered. Kate cuffed him, and he laughed, which made her laugh.
"Happy New Year," she murmured, tracing his jaw with her finger.
"Happy New Year, Kate," he said back. Christmas had been a quiet affair, but they had been okay with that. It was the New Year they were looking forward to because it was a new beginning for them both. They kissed and slowly made their way into his room and shut the door.
No rematch was done that day.
Two Weeks Later
Kate was looking out the window at the view. Lee was talking to the landlord behind her. After a few moments, she felt him come up behind her and put his arms around her.
"It's ours," he said.
"That's great," she smiled. He kissed the side of her head and held her close.
"It'll be nice not to have to fight for that damn bathroom every morning," Lee sighed.
"I agree," she laughed. She turned in his arms and pressed her face against his chest, hugging him tightly. She did not regret her decision to move here with him. She did not miss her job. She was looking into other avenues of work. Lee had discovered her talent for photography when he had found her box of photos and projects she used to do while packing up her old apartment. She was thinking of getting into that more.
"You're happy, right?" Lee asked, bringing her back to the present.
"Of course," she answered, pulling back to look at him. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"Just checking," he said. "I thought Lacy was happy, and it turned out she wasn't, so I just want to make sure."
"I will tell you if I'm not happy," Kate promised. "You have my word."
"Good," he smiled.
They turned when Toll came in with a box and Gunner followed with another box.
"What the hell do you have in here?" Toll asked, grunting with effort as he lugged it through the door and set it down.
"Books," Kate answered.
"You should have known that," Gunner commented. "Being the big reader you are and all."
"It never ceases to amaze me how heavy paper can weigh," Toll sighed as he left to get another box.
"You wanna pitch in now?" Gunner asked Lee after setting his box down.
"Quit your whining. I'm coming," Lee retorted. He reluctantly released Kate and followed Gunner out the door. Kate went to start unpacking. She felt good. She knew this was a new start, and she was very much looking forward to it. She laughed when the guys came back bickering and mocking each other. Lee rolled his eyes behind their backs as it continued. Then Barney started ribbing him about little Christmases running around, causing the others to chime in and making Lee flee the building just to get some peace. Kate loved it all. This was her new family, and she felt like she belonged in a way she never had felt before. She put the photo of her and Reggie on the mantel and took in his smiling face. One day, she'd see him again. But for now, she was here.
She was home.
Somewhere in Europe
The convoy on the highway was brutally attacked, and SUVs were sent spinning and crashing every which way. The armored truck carrying the former Agent Tansley Fields was flipped onto its side and sent skidding until it stopped at the edge of the bridge, teetering precariously on the edge.
The back door was burned open, and she looked around her hands to see the doors yanked off and a figure standing there looking back at her. She smiled.
"You came for me," she said.
"You failed," the man said, nearing her. She swallowed, feeling a little afraid to see his gun aimed at her.
"I...I didn't mean to..."
"There is no space for failure. James would have been very disappointed in you."
"Don't you talk about my dead husband like that," Tansley snapped. "And stop moving. You're going to send us over the edge!"
"You're forgetting that he's also my brother," Lucas Munroe said, ignoring her and stopping right in front of her. The truck groaned, sliding a bit. "And I never understood why he married a lying bitch like you just because you were both in the CIA."
"Lucas," she tried. "Please...give me one more chance."
"You had the best chance in the world to take out the team that murdered my brother, which was a surprising bonus to all of this, I might add, and you didn't. There are no more chances, Tansley. You're done."
"Wait-" Tansley started, but Lucas fired his gun twice, killing her instantly. He walked back out into the daylight before the truck began to slide faster over the edge. He hopped off just in time, ignoring the screams and yelling from the onlookers as the truck went over and crashed into the water below. He put his sunglasses back on and strode to his waiting sedan.
"Where to?" his driver asked.
"Home," Lucas answered. He had to rebuild a team since he'd lost all his players, and then he'd go and destroy Barney Ross's team one by one. He'd avenge his brother, who'd been dead just over five years now. He couldn't take over Vilena, but he could kill the team that murdered James for trying.
One day. Very soon.
