When Rebecca finally processed what she heard she looked at Mac. "You do realize the whole under house under rules thing was to catch Martin Colic right?" He looked at her patiently waiting. "Mac that's insane. No. I don't think that's necessary or really an option."
"I'll ignore that second part. The first part though? Not really. How is it not necessary? Rebecca you were warned about what you were doing while undercover. That's something I can't ignore. You're lucky I didn't have to file it," he responded.
"If you're referring to my nightmares? Don't even try it. I've had them for years," she dismissed. Mac looked at her and she smirked. "On top of that, I'm still passing mandatory psych evaluations meaning there's nothing to hold on me," she warned.
"Maybe not, but it doesn't change that if Hawkes thinks you're a danger to yourself, he can easily change that status."
"Yeah and if he does that he costs me my job. So I will personally be reminding him of that little aspect. I can't lose the one thing I worked my hardest for," she responded glaring at Mac. "I'm fine. End of discussion," she answered and Mac didn't even hesitate to grab her wrist. "Let me go. I'm fine."
"If you were, you would have sat here and heard me out. I know Sid asked you to do that much," Mac responded and she groaned looking at him. "Rebecca, I'm honestly worried about you. Forget looking at it like a boss worried about an employee. I'm genuinely worried off hours, no work affecting personal lives," he warned her. She glanced at him confused and he chuckled at that. "Knew that would catch your attention. Even though you thought I was playing my part? I did genuinely care. You worried me."
"The nightmares are just that. Nightmares. They go away," she dismissed.
"You didn't respond to me or Stella many times when those nightmares took hold. You one time were so deep in one that you regressed to no words and no responses. Stella and I had to physically move you. You weren't dead weight luckily, but you were out of your own body almost. That's something to be worried about," he answered.
"Mac? Leave it. If I really need to consider other options, you'll be one of the first to know," she promised before leaving with her bag and going down the elevator not even looking back. Stella walked in after a few more minutes and noted that he looked worried.
"Mac, she's not ready to talk yet. She'll come to us. Hopefully. Now it's a maybe because you confronted her," she admitted looking at him. "The girl right now has a lot on her plate. Colic's trial is coming up and she will be expected to testify as a NYPD Detective and a victim. Her brother is now a suspect and already in the wind," she listed. "That's just the iceberg's tip," she reminded.
"I know Stella, but I think we had a chance to learn something and we missed it. She had a bad childhood," he began and Stella nodded at that. "She's admitted her dad was bitter, we know her mom physically and emotionally scarred, more than likely that is, her. We had our chance."
"Well now we wait until she's ready," Stella answered.
Meanwhile, back at her apartment, Rebecca was looking around shocked at how empty the place felt even though her apartment was back to normal. "How to know you stayed with someone too long," she muttered before she began making herself a sandwich and opened the door as she heard a knock. She smiled as she saw Danny and Lindsay. "I'm very certain you're missing a tiny Lindsay," she teased.
"With Mac. Wanted to see how you were doing. We haven't had the chance to talk unlike everyone else on the team," Lindsay chuckled looking at her. She smiled at that and put her plate aside knowing she wasn't going to eat for a bit. "Come on. We all wanted to know and from what we hear, everyone's getting a different answer. So the real answer please?"
"I'm confused," she admitted looking to Lindsay. "Mac and Sid both confronted me today," she added and Danny knew why too. "Remember how I said I'd never do an overnight watching of Lucy because of my stupid nightmares?" She nodded at that. "Well they really got me while we were undercover. I mean I was okay, but Mac doesn't think so. He wants me to return to living under the same roof as him and Stella. I told him I'm okay but he doesn't believe it."
"How's the apartment feel again?" Danny knew to dodge the topic and Lindsay would pick up the cue as well.
"Big, spacious, empty," she listed. "Be in the apartment of Mac's. Books galore, lots of military artifacts and stuff like that," she listed. Danny chuckled understanding the reference perfectly. She was used to having only what was necessary out, but Danny grabbed a picture he didn't see out in a long time. "I thought I'd put it back out. Mac had it out in his place and it reminded me of how much I enjoyed that night," she mused.
When she finally finished entertaining the Messers, she locked the door and then looked over the city. "Alright Talon, where are you? We have to find you. Colic's already behind bars and you're a witness according to other eyewitnesses. So we need you." Over the evening, Rebecca spent the night trying to find her brother and didn't sleep. She noted the time and sighed grabbing her extra large travel mug and filled it with a fresh pot of coffee and creamer. As she got down to the ground floor she saw Mac. "Mind not creeping me out?"
"Hawkes called. He doesn't often listen to what the gossips of your place have to say, but this time he did as it sounded too much like you. You were up all night?"
"I slept on the couch for a few hours. I was trying to track our eyewitness down," she informed. Mac looked at her as she got into his car as she knew it wasn't really an option. "Any leads on the evidence so far? I know someone's already in there."
"Adam's finishing up with his phone and Stella's processing his clothes. I want you to be on reconstruction. That broken item? Rebuild it for us," he informed. She nodded and then got up to the Lab as they arrived and took her coat and saw Jo.
"Morning Jo," she greeted and the woman smiled at her as she walked into the trace lab and grabbed the shards from autopsy and from the scene. She saw Stella sit beside her with the personal effects. "If you were in on what Mac was doing last night, really not a wise move to sit so close."
"I wasn't. Mac was trying to show he cares, but you know him. He doesn't wait. He's the same as me. When you're ready to talk, if you ever want to talk, our doors? Open," she assured. Rebecca nodded and as Stella collected her evidence she noticed Rebecca was finishing her's. "What do we have?"
"Not sure. Missing too many components still. But from what it looks like? A syringe," she answered pointing to the holes. "The wider hole would be for the plunger for fluids and the tiny little hole? Meant for the needle itself. There were no signs of it at the scene. Meaning someone took the other pieces."
"But why?"
"Unsure. Cause of death was Exsanguination from the right carotid artery according to Sid. So the needle wasn't big enough to cause that mark," she began and Mac then walked in. "We have a murder weapon still in the wind. This isn't it," she responded.
"No, but it gives us a lead. Sid's report said the victim was drugged. He got reports of heavy doses of a benzodiazepine from the tox reports," he informed.
"A sleeping agent. If this needle was used," she responded and he nodded. "I'll start checking for it," she promised and he nodded at her. She grabbed a cotton swab and gently inserted it into the larger section and swabbed around for a few minutes before grabbing the testing kits they had for drugs and grabbed what she knew was necessary to test for the benzodiazepines. As she placed the drops that actually tested she smirked as she saw the color on the bottle. "Positive. This was the sleeping needle."
"Perfect. Bag it and tag it again," Stella answered. She nodded and as she worked on it she made her notes clear that this piece of evidence was reconstructed from other evidence. As she left the room she saw Hawkes waiting.
"We have someone on sleeping agents, killed while they are in effect. I have the needle. Just missing the weapon," she answered.
"Plus the killer in the wind. By the way heard we have another Manx to deal with," he teased and she playfully shoved him. "How you feeling about all that?"
"Not okay with it. Talon's a man that can hide really well. So if he doesn't want to be found? He won't," she admitted and Hawkes looked at her. "Doesn't mean that I won't try. I know my brother. But it doesn't change that I have a lot to deal with in general," she admitted as she walked over to A/V. "Adam? Kendall?" They poked their heads up and she smirked. "What's our status on that phone?"
"Still working on it. But you won't like what we have so far," Kendall answered pulling up a chair beside her. She sat down and looked at what they were pulling up. "We've been looking at his messages and look at who he's contacting."
"Talon," Rebecca breathed in shock. "Do we have any messages he's left for my brother?"
"Yeah. He's warning Talon that you're onto a lead. Something unintelligible though," Adam answered and Rebecca put a finger up and looked in thought. "Is there something you know that your brother wouldn't want you to know?"
"Not unless," she began before she looked at them. "I'll be back in a few minutes to fill you in. I need to get Mac brought up to speed now," she warned and Adam looked to Hawkes who looked confused but he waited until the A/V lab doors closed.
"If you two are a thing, that's great, but do me a favor. Make it obvious to her," Hawkes responded looking at them. Kendall looked shocked and Hawkes chuckled. "Kendall, she's a woman of honor. If she sees that you and Adam are a thing, she'll be happy for you. It's just so then she doesn't think something that isn't real," he reminded. She looked confused. "Kendall, on and off hours. You and Adam are her friends. But she would feel crushed if she knew she tried something like asking someone out that was clearly taken," he explained.
"You like her?" Hawkes looked at them and Kendall chuckled. "You do. You have a crush on Rebecca Manx."
"She tolerates a lot. She's been through a lot. I want to walk with her through these fires so she knows she's not alone in them. Mac and Stella have her back in one way, but I'm wanting to be the one beside her," he explained.
"Well then you better make your move eventually. She's not going to make it," Adam chuckled looking at him.
Meanwhile, Mac and Stella were about to leave his office before they saw Rebecca walking quickly. "Not a good sign," Stella responded as she walked over to Rebecca. "What's going on? Do we have something we need to follow up on?"
"We need to find Talon. Now," she warned.
"Talon's jumped from witness to suspect?"
"Yes," she answered. She pulled out the image she had of her father and brothers. "The biggest scandal of the family? My brother being a drug dealer. Flack arrested him once but never found the drugs. I never realized why he kept talking to me about them until Kendall replayed a message he left on the Talon's phone. I'm onto them. Meaning they are looking for something and I'm one of the only ones who knows something."
"The location of the drugs. But why hasn't Talon retrieved them?"
"Because they're only in a place I remember. I must have moved them. Although we never lived together, Talon and I would hang out. So what he's looking for must be something that I moved and no offence with my brother? The options are limited," she admitted.
"No offence that's not the biggest scandal of your family?"
"Not to you. To me? It is. The other stuff which I'm not ready to talk about yet, is irrelevant. I have to find out where he's going."
