Fury and Pegasus
Fury looked down at the Skrull corpse as a medical examiner examined the body on a medical table, even cutting into it to see what he could learn from it. Along with them were both the man and woman that were there at the Blockbuster.
"All life on Earth is carbon based. Not this guy. Whatever he runs on, it's not on the periodic table." He told everyone, especially Fury, who walked up to him with an ice bag on his face.
"You're saying he's not from around here?" He asked the examiner as he walked up to him, holding an organ.
"Hey, how's your eyes?" The examiner asked.
"Well, I'd say fine, but it can't believe what it's seeing." Fury replied, taking the ice bag off, revealing his cut as he looked down at the corpse, now starting to actually believe what Rold told him. The examiner then walked off.
"You say this thing looked like Coulson?" The man asked as he and the woman walked up to Fury.
"Mmm. Talked like him, too." He nodded.
"And that man said something about more of them?" The woman then asked.
"The word he used was 'infiltration'." Fury answered her.
"You believe her?" The man questioned.
"Not till I saw this." Fury said in honesty and the three looked down at the corpse.
"*Inhales sharply* What's your plan?" The man asked Fury, wondering what he'll do.
"I'll find the Blockbuster boy. I got word on a motorcycle thief that fits his description. If he can tell us why these lizards are here, maybe he can tell us how to kick 'em to the curb." Fury explained.
"Good. But do it alone, alright? Don't trust anyone. Not even our own men with these beings." The woman cautioned him.
"Yes, ma'am." Fury nodded. Then just out of curiosity, they looked underneath the tarp where the privates would be and were… silent to say the least and then Fury put the ice bag down and walked out, leaving the man and woman with the corpse.
"Wow. They're ugly bastards, aren't they?" The man asked the examiner.
"*chuckles* Yeah, well, he's no Brad Pitt, sir." He replied as the woman knelt down closely at the Skrull's head with a sad expression on her face.
"Safe journey to the beyond, old friend. We'll finish what we started." She whispered, revealing that she and the man are both Talos and Xarill. He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder as she dragged a finger on the Skrull's nose and then stroked the top of the head.
"I wouldn't get too close there, ma'am." The examiner warned her. She sniffled slightly as she stood back up.
"No one in or out." Talos ordered as they walked out.
With Rold, he rode the motorbike out into the middle of the desert, having learned where Rosamond is located and he felt a thrill riding the bike with the wind brushing against his face. He eventually arrived at the destination and parked right outside of Pancho's Bar. He then took off the helmet and walked into the bar.
He looked around and saw an arcade game when he pictured himself playing that game and then him and that woman sitting and having a drink, then of him and her singing. It's as though they're memories.
"Who am I?" He asked himself, now starting to question everything about himself. Rold then looked over at a wall where there were photos of planes and he looked at one in particular that had the Pegasus symbol on one of its tail fins. Then he heard a faint rattling behind him so he looked over his shoulder and saw a man behind him.
"What can I get ya?" He asked Rold.
"Where was this photo taken?" He asked the man, pointing at the photo in question.
"Uh… an airport." He shrugged, not exactly knowing himself.
"Where's Pegasus?" Rold then asked, hoping he'd know.
"That's classified. Not unlike the file I started on you." Fury revealed himself behind the bar. He looked at the man and he walked out.
"But I see you've changed it up a bit since then. Grunge is a good look for you." Fury then noted. Rold noticed the stitches on his eyebrow.
"Rough day, Agent Fury?" He asked, pointing to his injury.
"It was cool, you know? Had a space invasion, big car chase. Got to watch an alien autopsy. Typical nine to five." Fury said as he and Rold walked up to each other.
"Saw one, huh?" Rold asked.
"I was never one to believe in aliens, but I can't unsee that." Fury stated.
"Alright. Now this may come out as awkward, but…." Rold said, slightly suspicious.
"You think I'm one of those green things." Fury finished for him, knowing what he was thinking.
"One can't be too careful." Rold shrugged his shoulders.
"You are looking at 100% red blooded Earth man." Fury said, leaning on the pool table.
"I'm gonna need more than that to convince me." Rold told him.
"We talking cheek swab or urine sample?" Fury questioned.
"Not even that. The DNA would be a perfect match." Rold added.
"Want my AOL password?"
"Skrulls only sim recent memories of host bodies." Rold revealed.
"*scoffs* Oh, oh. You wanna get personal." Fury said with a grin.
The two then sat at a table and faced each other like an interrogation.
"Where were you born?"
"Huntsville, Alabama. But technically, I don't remember that part."
"Name of your first pet?"
"Mr. Snoofers."
"Mr. Snoofers?" Rold repeated in amusement of the name.
"That's what I said. Do I pass?" Fury asked him.
"Not yet. First job?"
"Soldier. Straight out of high school. Left the ranks a full bird colonel."
"Then?"
"Spy."
"Where?"
"It was the Cold War. We were everywhere. Uh, Belfast, Bucharest, Belgrade, Budapest. I like the B's. I can make them rhyme." Fury explained.
"Now?"
"Been riding a desk for the past six years, trying to figure out where our future enemies are coming from. Never occurred to me they would be coming from above." Fury answered.
"Alright. Name a detail so bizarre a Skrull could never fabricate it." Rold requested, leaving Fury out on a loop.
"If toast is cut diagonally, I can't eat it." He confessed. Rold raised an eyebrow and blinked at this odd bit of information.
"You didn't need that, did you?" Fury questioned.
"Just to make sure. Enjoyed it, though." Rold confessed.
"Okay. Your turn. Prove you're not a Skrull." Fury then told Rold.
"Okay, then. What I'm about to do is something no Skrull can do." He said before he shot out a blast of energy at the wall, leaving a hole and fire behind.
"And what was that?" Fury questioned, slightly scared at the damage.
"It's a photon blast. So, a full bird colonel turned spy turned S.H.I.E.L.D. agent must have a high security clearance. Where's Pegasus?" Rold said.
Ultimately, Fury decided to take Rold to where Pegasus is located by driving him in his car across the desert.
"Okay. The Skrulls sim alien races to infiltrate and take over planets. And you're a Kree? A race of noble warriors?" Fury asked Rold, who was in the passenger seat, about what he explained to Fury on the drive to Pegasus.
"Yep."
"So, um, what do Skrulls want with Dr. Lawson?"
"They think that she developed a light speed engine at Pegasus." Rold revealed.
"Light speed engine? Gotta admit, that's not the craziest thing I've heard today." Fury stated.
"You never know, it's still early." Rold noted.
"And you, what do you want?" Fury questioned.
"To know who I really am and to stop the Skrulls before they're invincible." Rold answered.
"I guess that explains why you're a rogue soldier. War's a universal language after all." Fury noted as they drove over a bridge and turned to a metal fence and a speaker box with a fingerprint scanner.
"This is government property. Turn your vehicle around." A voice ordered them as Fury pulled out his badge.
"Nicholas Joseph Fury. Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." Fury said as he flashed the badge to a camera on the speaker box.
"Place your thumb on the pad. One moment." The voice said as Fury placed his thumb on the scanner and it started scanning.
"You have three names?" Rold questioned, as the Kree normally have just one name.
"Everybody calls me Fury. Not Nichola. Not Joseph. Not Nick. Just Fury." Fury insisted.
"What about your mother?"
"Fury."
"What do you call her?"
"Fury."
"Any kids?"
"If I have them, they'll call me Fury."
"You're bland." Rold remarked.
"You are cleared for access." The voice on the speaker box came through.
"Thank you." Fury replied before the fence opened up and then they drove further down the road they're on and then drove into a tunnel leading them underground into Project Pegasus, which was a joint NASA USAF facility. They eventually parked next to some other vehicles and exited the car.
"Oh, hold up. You look like somebody's disaffected nephew. Put that on." Fury reasoned as he pulled a cap out and threw it to Rold, who looked at it and saw a logo on it.
"What's this?" He asked, pointing at the logo.
"It's the S,H.I.E.L.D. logo." Fury said.
"So you guys flash your identity even though you're supposed to be covert?" Rold pondered as he put the cap on.
"Said the space soldier who was wearing a rubber suit." Fury retorted.
"It's not made of rubber." Rold muttered before they walked over to a railing and looked out at a hangar and saw some jets and planes.
"How can I help you?" A security officer asked, walking up to them with two armed men behind him.
"We're agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Fury said, showing his identification.
"We're looking for a Dr. Wendy Lawson. Do you know her?" Rold asked the officer in a professional tone. The officer looked at him and Fury for several seconds before handing Fury his identification back.
"Follow me." He told them and he led them into a small room and left them there for some time.
"You familiar with the phrase 'welcome wagon'?" Fury asked after a long silence.
"Not really." Rold drawled out.
"Well, this ain't it." He added before trying the scanner and it flashed red. He then pulled something out of his pocket.
"What's that?" Rold asked in curiosity.
"State of the art two way pager." Fury answered as he stood up.
"And who are you paging?"
"My mom. Don't worry. I didn't mention you." Fury said, though he's really contacting someone, requesting backup. Fury then pulled out his identification while Rold looked at the names of various departments, one of them saying 'Records' on subfloor five.
Fury pulled out some tape and put some on his I.D. then pulled it off and examined it through the light showing a fingerprint from the security officer, making him whoop in satisfaction. Then he pressed it on the scanner and when the fingerprint was scanned, it flashed green and he opened the door.
"After you." He said to Rold.
"Very impressive." He admitted as he walked out.
"Oh, you should see what I can do with a paperclip." Fury remarked as he walked out as well.
The duo reached an elevator and exited when they reached the subfloor they're headed for. And as they walked down the hallway, a ginger cat came out and came up to Rold, nuzzling against his leg, purring. Rold was taken aback at first but remembered those apparent memories and some of them involved a ginger cat. He picked it up and saw the name tag saying 'Goose', the same name of that cat in the memories. He had admit, the cat was cute.
"Well, hello." He said, putting the cat back down and stroking it slightly.
"I see you're a cat person." Fury said as Rold carried on. Fury knelt down to look at the cat, clearly a cat person himself.
"Oh, my goodness. Look at you. Aren't you the cutest little thing? Aren't you cute? And what's your name, huh? What's your name?" Fury spoke to the cat and looked at the name tag itself, but the cat shoved his hand away.
"'Goose'. Cool name for a cool cat." Fury said as he stroked the cat. Rold found a door that said 'Records' on it with the Pegasus symbol on it with a thumb scanner and looked over to the agent.
"Fury." He called out to him, pointing at the door.
"I'll be back." Fury whispered to Goose and walked up to Rold and the door.
"Oh! Let me get my fingerprint out." Fury said, though Rold just blasted the door handle, unlocking the door.
"You sat there and watched me play with tape? When all you had to do was…" Fury questioned.
"Hey, I wanted you to have a moment to shine." Rold said innocently as he pushed the door open to a dark room. The lights then turned on and showed rows of shelves. They then walked further in until they found the shelf that categorized the 'L's and then they walked down the shelf until they found Lawson.
"Here we go." Rold said as he pulled out both boxes with the name, under the watch of Goose. They looked through the files until Rold found a schematic for Pegasus.
"Lawson's plan for the light speed engine." He said aloud. He then noticed the words 'Project Terminated' on the corner.
"Why was the project terminated?" He then questioned with a frown.
"Um, maybe because she's cuckoo." Fury said, showing notes that Lawson wrote, but they were written in familiar glyphs.
"Those are Kree glyphs. She's not cuckoo." Rold said, eyes widening, realising what this now means.
"She's Kree." He then said in realisation.
"Well, she's dead." Fury then revealed. Rold looked at him in shock.
"What?"
"She crashed the Asis aircraft doing an unauthorized test flight. Took a pilot down with her. The pilot being her own son. That's why security here is so unfriendly. They're covering up a billion dollar mistake." Fury explained. Further adding rising tension within Rold as he then showed him a photo.
"Oh, and your light speed engine is toast." He then said as Rold looked closely at the image, feeling a sense of familiarity as it looked like an explosion happened.
"When did this crash happen?" Rold asked, sounding distant as he looked at another photo of the crash site, now really looking familiar.
"Six years ago. 1989." Fury answered him. All Rold remembered was up to six years ago.
"Who's the pilot?" Rold asked, voice cracking slightly, starting to now connect dots that he didn't want to be true in fear.
"Um, most of thing's redacted, but there is a testimonial here from a Maria Rambeau. Last person to see them alive." Fury said, hearing a beep from his pager showing that he got a message from someone named Keller.
"You okay?" He then asked him, concerned slightly. He nodded.
"Back in a minute." Fury said as he walked off.
Rold then looked through the file with the Kree glyphs and as he scrolled through, he gasped as he found a photo of Lawson with himself and the dark skinned woman he saw they're smiling in front of a jet and there was a handwritten note saying 'Mother and son teaming up'. Rold was now sliding down to the ground, shedding tears as memories started flashing.
"This isn't about fighting wars. It's about ending them. I know you will do what is right, my son." Lawson said with a fond smile as Rold and the dark skinned woman looked at an aircraft.
Then there was Rold in a cockpit, flying into some trees.
Rold now knew the truth. What Talos told him about knowing his mother, all those moments he saw in the machine, how Goose reacted upon seeing him here, why the Supreme Intelligence looks like Lawson.
"I'm her son." He whispered, shedding tears. Goose then walked up to him and she nuzzled against him, purring in comfort.
"I know Lawson was Kree. She lived a life here on C-53 and died in a plane crash. Did you know anything about this?" Rold said bitterly on a phone, contacting Yon-Rogg.
"I just discovered a mission report sent from C-53. There's only so much I'm cleared to tell you, Rold, but…. Lawson was an undercover Kree operative named Mar-Vell. She was working on a unique energy core. Experimenting with tech that apparently could help us win the war." Yon-Rogg explained, clearly sensing something wrong with him.
Back at the entrance, cars rolled in and both the disguised Talos and Xarill exited, walking up to Fury.
"Is he still here?" Xarill asked the agent.
"He's cooperating with the investigation, ma'am." Fury said as he, Talos and Xarill walked to the elevator.
"You men stay here." Talos ordered some men, who acknowledged.
"We want to question him alone. Excellent work, Nicholas." Talos said as they entered the elevator, revealing his mistake of what he called Fury, which he himself picked up on.
"Does it say anything about me?" Rold then demanded.
"Anything about you? No, of course not. Why?" Yon asked in confusion.
"I just learned… that Mar-Vell is my mother. It's why I see her when I visit the Supreme Intelligence. I was her child." Rold explained, sounding angry.
"This sounds like Skrull simulation, Rold." Yon tried to argue.
"No! I saw proof of it. In the photo, I now remember my life here." Rold spat back.
"Stop. Remember your training. Know your enemy. It could be you. Do not let your emotions override your judgement." Yon advised him. Rold took a deep breath, trying to calm down.
"He's on sublevel six. I'll get off on five and take the stairs in case he makes a run for it. Do a pincer move like we did in Havana." Fury told Talos and Xarill, pressing buttons on the floors.
"Right. Like we did in Havana." Talos said. Fury knew very well that both are clearly Skrull, especially Talos. The elevator opened up at sublevel five and Fury walked out, deciding to do something.
"We're nearing the jump point. Leave your beacon on so I can find you. We'll get to the bottom of this, Rold. Together." Yon assured him.
"Alright." He said before hanging up. Rold now started to feel his anger grow again and this time he took it out on the wall, punching it with a photon blast.
"Who does he think he is?" He growled.
Talos and Xarill entered sublevel six, and realised that they just might've been tricked.
"I think you slipped, Talos." Xarill scolded her brother.
Fury walked through the records, trying to find Rold.
"Rold! Rold!" He called out, not getting a response. The other end of the room had the lights turned on and he hid as Talos and Xarill entered with some men alongside them.
Rold entered the stairwell and walked down some stairs when he heard footsteps above him.
"Fury's colluding with the target." A woman's voice said.
"Then why would he call us in?" Coulson questioned, surprising Rold.
"All I know is we take him in, too. Dead or alive." The woman explained.
"Dead or alive?" Coulson questioned as they walked through the door Rold came through.
Rold sighed through his nose in annoyance at what Fury had done, practically going behind his back but with this news, he couldn't leave him to potentially die.
Fury grabbed a film can from where he hid and threw it at a shelf elsewhere, catching their attention and he walked towards the exit but the light next to it flashed on, meaning someone's nearby so he hid at some shelves but when he got to the other end, he found himself at gunpoint by both Talos and Xarill.
"Was it what I called you?" Talos questioned.
Fury didn't reply as he grabbed their guns and elbowed them in their faces, then made the magazines in their guns fall out, then he knocked them back as he rolled away from them and aimed a gun at them, though it was empty. He threw it, though it was dodged and he started fighting them. However, he was outclassed in hand to hand combat and because of their super strength. And then they both beat him with ease. Talos then grabbed the glasses he wore and put them back on as they fell in the middle of the fight.
"You are so outclassed, that I actually feel bad for you, you know?" Xarill said to Fury.
"Plus, I like these glasses, they complete the look." Talos remarked.
But then before they did anything else, they were thrown back by two photon blasts made by Rold. He then formed a hole above him and jumped up, with Fury as well. They then ran.
"So you called them in, huh?" Rold asked accusingly.
"My bad." Fury admitted his fault as they continued onto the stairwell and made their way up the stairs until they stopped to see Coulson in their way, a handgun aimed at Rold, who charged his fist up as an alarm started blaring. Both Fury and Coulson shared a look and then surprisingly lowered his gun.
"Coulson, do you have eyes on them?" A woman from above them asked.
"They're not down here." He replied as Fury and Rold exited through the door behind them and they ran their way to the hangar and they shut the doors with a bent pipe.
Rold then tapped Fury's shoulder.
"Give me your pager." He requested. Fury begrudgingly handed it to him as agents banged against the door. The duo then ran through the hangar in time to hide as the agents slammed the door open. Rold then noticed an aircraft that looked like a hybrid of a jet and a spaceship.
The two got onboard and sat in the pilot seats.
"Do you know how to fly this thing?" Fury asked as Rold started to turn the aircraft on.
"Yeah." Rold answered with confidence as the engines powered up. He then lifted it off the ground, making Fury chuckle and the agents started firing at the jet but Rold just simply took off and flew out of the hangar and ascended high in the sky. As they did, the two heard meowing from behind them and so, confused, they looked back and saw Goose up against strapped down crates.
"We got a stowaway." Fury remarked.
"Hang on, Goose." Rold assured the cat as he leveled the jet with the clouds. Goose then made her way up to the pair and once more nuzzled against Rold, who now that he started to know who he was and his connection with the cat, stroked her with a grin.
"Up you go." He said as he put the cat up on the console to sit on.
"Who's a good kitty, huh? Huh, Goose? Yes, that's right." Fury started to talk to Goose, much to the amusement of Rold.
"Do you know this woman with me and Lawson?" He asked the agent, handing him the photo he saw. Fury looked at it and was shocked to see that Rold is indeed Lawson's son based on the writing on the photo.
"You know. I arrived on Hala near death. No memories. And that was taken six years ago." He said.
"So you're Dr. Lawson's son?" Fury asked for confirmation.
"Yeah. And we need to find the last person who saw me and my mother alive." Rold reasoned.
"Maria Rambeau?" Fury questioned, Rold nodding.
"How do we get to Louisiana?" Rold asked.
"Due east. Hang a right at Memphis." He said. Rold thought back at what Coulson did.
"By the way, that one agent that stopped the Skrulls from finding us?"
"Coulson. The new guy. I guess he doesn't hate me yet."
"Give him time." Rold retorted, making Fury chuckle.
"I guess he had a feeling, you know? Went with his gut against orders. That's a really hard thing to do. But it's what keeps us human." Fury stated.
"And to think I end up in trouble for that."
"Oh, I can see that about you." Fury pointed out, making Rold genuinely laugh.
"Rescuing the guy who sold you out to the Skrulls? I'm guessing that's not standard Kree operating procedure." Fury then stated.
"I won't tell your boss if you don't tell mine." Rold said, making them both laugh as they made their way to Louisiana.
