On the Right Side
Now having accepted and learned the real story behind himself, his mother and the war itself, Harold Lawson is going to finish what his mother was starting and work with the Skrulls.
"Harry, we may not deserve your full trust, but you were our only lead. Your energy signature matched up with Mar-Vell's core. And now we know why that is. We need your help to decode the coordinates to your mother's lab." Xarill told him as everyone gathered around the dining table.
"Alright. But firstly, they're not coordinates, they're actually state vectors." He revealed, making the Skrull siblings look at each other, stunned.
"For orbital position and velocity." Fury added as he was eating a sandwich.
"You didn't find her lab on Earth, 'cause it's not on Earth." Maria stressed out.
"It's the location on the date of the crash six years ago. If we were to track its course, we'd be able to find it in orbit right now. Basic physics." Harry explained. All of this made both Talos and Xarill look over to the Skrull named Norex standing further back from them with glares.
"In orbit?" Talos questioned him and he just made a gesture saying 'how was I supposed to know'.
"You're supposed to be a science expert and you couldn't even consider that idea?" Xarill questioned, sounding slightly fed up.
"Yon-Rogg will catch up soon. We'll have to get to the core before him and Starforce." Harry stated, suggesting something that Fury picked up on.
"Mmm. We're going to space?" He asked.
"In what?" Harry asked.
"A few tweaks to your vessel should do it. I can handle the modifications." Norex pointed out.
"Mmm. Your science guy." Fury retorted before he took a sip of his drink.
With things agreed on, Norex and some fellow Skrulls started work on some modifications of the jet Harry and Fury used and since it would take a while, it gave everyone a moment to relax.
"You know, I could use a co-pilot." Harry said to Maria as he, her and Monica sat in a room to themselves, Goose lying next to Harry and he stroked her.
"No. No, I can't. I can't leave Monica." She shook her head upon hearing that.
"Mom, it's okay. I can stay with gramma and pa-pa." Monica said, wanting her mother to join in on the fight.
"There's no way I'm going, baby. It's too dangerous." Maria told her.
"Testing brand new aerospace tech is dangerous and you used to do that." Monica pointed out with a valid argument, one that even Harry smirked at how smart this girl was.
"Your plan is to leave the atmosphere in a craft not designed for the journey and you anticipate hostile encounters with a technologically superior foreign enemy. Correct?" Maria summed up. Harry rolled his shoulders.
"That's what I'm saying. You have to go."
"Monica!"
"You have a chance to fly the coolest mission in the history of missions, and you're gonna give it up to sit on the couch and watch Fresh Prince with me?" Monica asked, which downright amused Harry.
"What?" Maria questioned blankly.
"I just think you should consider what kind of example you're setting for your daughter." Monica then reasoned, which made Maria stare blankly and then at Harry, who chuckled at how she made her mother now need to join in.
Shortly after, Harry had his Starforce suit back on and he sat on the porch, looking up at the night sky at all the stars shining bright. As he did, he looked back at all he had done under Yon-Rogg's thumb and what he did against the Skrull.
"You alright?" Xarill asked him as she decided to sit next to him.
"*sighs* Now that I know the truth, I'm now thinking back to what I did to your people. I'm starting to feel guilt." He explained, looking down at his hands.
"You were a blank slate used by the Kree. It's not entirely your fault." She argued, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Still doesn't lessen what happened. But at least I can make up for it now." Harry admitted. Xarill smiled seeing his mother in him.
"Just like your mother." She murmured before her own thoughts about him started to creep in since the two are now alone.
"You know… there's something you should know." She then said to him, which made him look at her with curiosity.
"What's that?" He asked, his own thoughts about her creeping in as well. Being this up close, he had to admit her eyes looked beautiful.
"I've been thinking a lot about you ever since we've been searching for you. More than one should, if you know what I mean." She confessed, blushing slightly and looking away in case he thinks that she's weird.
"Well… I've felt the same about you, believe it or not." He revealed to her, making her face him, eyes wide and jaw open. Talos was in the house watching the whole interaction between them. He always knew that his sister had grown to have feelings for Harry and so he just let her grow her feelings for him, knowing that she'd be stubborn to not look elsewhere.
"Really?" She asked, Harry nodding.
"Yeah. You had this aura that made me want to know you more." He said, now moving his hand to grab hers and squeezed it. Xarill liked the gesture, finding it tender.
"In fact, if we succeed with this mission, do you want to give this relationship a chance?" Harry then asked, hoping she says yes he wants to be with someone.
"Yes. I want this to work." She nodded, which made Harry so happy and Talos smirked, seeing that his sister is starting a relationship.
The two sat there in comfortable silence for a bit until they saw Maria's parents drive in to come pick up Monica, who now sat next to the new couple with Harry's jacket in her arms.
"Your mom's lucky, you know. When handing out kids, they gave her the toughest one. Good ole Lieutenant Trouble." Harry joked, which brought a smile to the girl's face.
"You remembered." Monica said. Xarill couldn't help but smile at their interaction, seeing how good Harry is with kids.
"Is that my jacket?" He then asked, noticing what was in her arms. She nodded as she was about to hand it to him.
"No, no. You hang onto that until I come back. Thought I'd like your help with something. I cannot wear these Kree colours anymore. And I'd like you two to come up with different colours." Harry said, standing up and tinkering with his wrist controls and both Xarill and Monica watched as the suit looked as the suit changed from a green and black colour scheme to a blue and green scheme.
"Whoa," Monica said in awe while Xarill looked impressed. Monica then tinkered with the controls and changed the colour scheme to a dark pink and yellow, not liking it that much, then to a brown and bronze scheme, The next one they tested was a multi-coloured neon look.
"Yeah, definitely not." Xarill said, making all three laugh. Monica then let Xarill try some colour schemes and the first one she tried was a white and green scheme. She then looked at Monical's shirt and tried a red, blue and gold colour scheme and while it looked great, she decided on something a little different.
"I think I know the right one." She said before she switched the colours around. Harry's shoulders, gloves and boots were gold, the rest of his body in blue and there were silver flourishes with the seams and the star on his chest was silver as well.
"Well?" He asked the two, finding the scheme very fitting as a visual representation of his powers.
"You look fresh." Monica complimented, her and Harry doing a high five.
"A showcase of power." Xarill noted, making Harry smile.
Once the jet was modified, everyone got onboard and made their way up in the sky, heading up to Earth's orbit by day break. A Skrull stayed behind to keep Yon-Rogg busy as they went off.
"Passing 500 and climbing." Harry said as he sat in the co-pilot seat with Maria.
Fury, Talos and Xarill sat in the passenger seats behind them and Fury had Goose on his lap.
"You know, you really shouldn't have that thing on your lap." Talos told the agent. Xarill felt slightly uncomfortable being near Goose.
"Our little alliance with you is tenuous at best. And as long as he continues to freak you both out like that, yeah, I'm gonna keep giving her all the love and hugs that she needs, right?" Fury retorted, forcing Goose up close to them and then stroked Goose more.
"Can I ask you two something? Do you just turn into anything you want?" Maria asked the Skrull siblings, curious about their ability to shapeshift.
"Well, we'd have to see it first in order to sim something." Xarill answered.
"Can you all do it?" Maria asked.
"Physiologically? Yeah. But, uh, it takes practice and, um, dare I say it, talent to do it well." Talos answered this time, his sister nodding.
"Can you turn into a cat?" Fury asked them.
"What's a cat?" Xarill asked him in confusion.
"What about a filing cabinet?" Maria asked.
"Why in the hell would we ever turn into a filing cabinet?" Xarill questioned how absurd that idea sounds.
"A venus flytrap? I'll give you 50 bucks right now if you turn into a venus flytrap." Fury said to the siblings, who just sighed, not wanting to answer him.
"Alright, switching engines from Scramjet to Fusion. Buckle up, you lot." Harry said as he made the jet go much faster and ascend up into Earth's orbit.
"Hey. Is this normal, like, space turbulence?" Fury asked Harry since the jet was shaking and felt G-forces press against him.
"Uh-huh." Harry nodded as they continued on until the engines shut off and inside the jet, there was zero gravity, making Harry notice the sunglasses floating next to him. Heck, even Goose was floating and grabbed onto Fury's arm right before Maria put on the artificial gravity in the jet.
"Alright, locking in on coordinate grid." Harry said as he flicked some switches and both Fury and the Skrull siblings got out of their seats.
"Where is it?" Maria asked about the laboratory as there doesn't seem to be anything out in space.
"It has to be here somewhere." Xarill said, placing a hand on Harry's shoulder.
"Well, is it in front of all that nothing, or behind it?" Fury questioned. Harry then looked at his wrist console and pressed some buttons and a hologram projected what looked to be a ship.
"Decloaking activated." A voice said and then in front of them a shimmer formed and revealed a large ship.
"A Kree Imperial Cruiser." He said in awe and then he and Maria piloted the jet and docked in the docking bay.
Everyone then walked through the dark corridors and then Talos picked up what looked to be a baseball on the floor and he led everyone through the corridors until they entered a large room which oddly had objects that came from Earth, including a pinball machine.
Harry watched Goose make her way over to a machine that held a glowing blue cube and walked over to it as Goose scratched it.
"Is that it? The core?" Maria asked.
"Yeah. Mom called it the Tesseract in her notes." He replied as he grabbed it and examined it. They all then looked at some of the objects scattered around, including toys and a lunchbox.
"What was your mom doing with all this kids stuff?" Maria asked before grabbing the lunchbox and opened it for Harry to put the Tesseract in it. Fury clears his throat to grab their attention. He looked down at a cup that had steaming hot coffee.
"We're not alone." Maria said in realisation. Then both Talos and Xarill made bellowing calls, which were answered by doors opening and Skrulls entering the large room. The two were so happy to see their people but then Talos saw both a female Skrull and her child walking up to him and he looked so stunned upon looking at them. The female, named Soren, even jogged up to him and embraced him.
"Talos!" She said. It is clear that she is his wife as the two then touch their foreheads.
All of the Skrulls, even children, all wore Earth clothing and all of this made Harry connect some dots.
"They didn't come here for the Tesseract." He said, seeing that they were wanting to reunite with their kind.
Soren looked over to the child and waved for her to come over and Talos realised that he's a father. He even knelt down to eye level with his daughter and they touched foreheads as well.
"Soren. I'm so glad to see you're alright." Xarill greeted her sister in law with a hug.
"We didn't know what to do. Mar-Vell warned us not to send a signal for any reason or the Kree would find us." Soren told the two.
"You did the right thing." Talos said and nuzzled with his wife. Harry couldn't help but feel happy that they're reunited.
Soren then noticed him and stepped back in fear, due to him wearing a Kree uniform.
"Hey, hey, it's alright. He's Mar-Vell's son. He's here to help." Xarill calmed her down with Talos' help, which worked as Soren now looked to Harry with trust. Harry then walked up to them.
"She's right. I'm not here to hurt you." He assured Soren.
"He led us to you." Talos told his wife.
"I'm so sorry for what happened. I didn't know." Harry apologized.
"Harry. This is war. Even my own hands are filthy from it, as well. But we're here now. You found our family." Xarill assured him and hugged him before pressing her forehead against his, surprising Soren, as well as Maria and Fury with their intimacy.
"This is just the beginning, though. There are thousands of us separated from each other, scattered throughout the galaxy." Talos then told him as he and Xarill broke apart.
A Skrull child then walked up to Harry and chittered softly as he held his hand and led him over to the pinball machine which was a Space Invaders game and he saw the high score number and the child pointed at himself, meaning that he made that high score.
"Good job." Harry praised the child, who chittered proudly, making him smile.
"If I played the same pinball machine for six years, I'd have some high scores, too." Fury told Maria.
Then to everyone's horror, Yon-Rogg, his Starforce and armed Kree entered, Yon-Rogg holding Goose by the neck.
"Fraternizing with the enemy?" He spat. Fury pulled his gun out but Minn-Erva aimed her rifle at him and gestured for him to drop it.
Harry stared at Yon-Rogg with utter disgust and anger as he threw Goose away.
Talos then stood in front of his wife and daughter as the Kree all aimed their weapons at the Skrulls.
"What did you do to your uniform?" Yon-Rogg asked in disgust to Harry.
"They got in his head. Just like we thought." Minn-Erva told him.
"The Supreme Intelligence will set him straight." Korath said as he held his swords out at the Skrull refugees.
"You can see they're not soldiers. Let 'em go. You can have me." Talos tried to bargain.
"And the core?" Yon asked.
"You are nothing but a fucking liar. You killed my mother. You used me like some tool." Harry hissed at him.
"I made you the best version of yourself." Yon-Rogg said and Harry tried to charge up his hands but it stopped.
"What's given can be taken away." He then said menacingly as the device on Harry's neck started flashing and beeping. Harry's fists then started shaking.
"YOU BASTARD!" He roared before he charged at Yon-Rogg tried to hit him but Yon's higher level skills, he knocked him to his knees and held him in place with his energy gauntlet. The Kree then started to become hostile towards the Skrulls. And Att-Lass looked into the lunchbox that held the Tesseract as Maria and Fury were held by some of the armed Kree.
Yon-Rogg then punched Harry right in the face, knocking him out.
"HARRY!" Xarill's voice was the last thing he heard,
Harry then found himself bound on his knees by the same biomechanical substance that is connecting him to the Supreme Intelligence.
He opened his eyes to find himself in the space he was in when he talked to the Supreme Intelligence. This time, music was playing and he looked to his left to see a vinyl player with a vinyl on. He then saw a table in front and he walked up to it as the Supreme Intelligence took the form of his mother.
"There he is. Seems like your time on C-53 jogged the old memory. This jacket. It's killer, by the way. Oh, the music. It's a nice touch." It said, dancing to the music, making Harry grow angry.
"Stop using my mother's form and let. Me. Out." He snarled.
"No can do." The Intelligence told him.
"If you so much as hurt them all, I'll burn you." Harry snarled again.
"With what exactly? Your power comes from us." The Intelligence shrugged off.
"You're not the ones who gave me this power. That blast did."
"And yet, you've never had the strength to control them on your own." Harry knows that the Intelligence is just trying to make him believe that he owes the Kree and that he's nothing. He ain't gonna fall for that.
"If you think I'm gonna listen to you, you're wrong. You took my family away. You made me think the Skrulls were the enemy when you and the Kree are!" Harry shouted.
In reality, Fury and Maria were handcuffed and watched as the Kree put a muzzle on Goose, detecting her as a Flerken and having a high danger status.
"It's a cat, not Hannibal Lecter." Fury told Att-Lass, not understanding why they're treating Goose like that. He then scanned Fury.
"Species: Human Male. Threat: low to none." He said. That happened to have offended Fury a bit.
"That thing's clearly busted." He muttered as they saw Goose being carried off to be loaded onto their main ship and heard that they're to be ejected into space.
Back with the Supreme Intelligence, the Tesseract showed up in front of Harry.
"Oh come on, Ace. Thanks to you those insidious shapeshifters will threaten our borders no more." The Intelligence bragged.
"I'm not believing your lies anymore. The Skrulls just want a home, free from your rule and you want to destroy them because they won't submit. I won't." Harry stated.
"We found you. We embraced you as our own."
"NO! You took my mother from me! You fed me lies! You used me!"
"No. Without us, you're weak. You're flawed. Helpless. We saved you. Without us, you're human." The Intelligence tried to talk him down as he had flashes of moments in his life when he was beaten down, hurt or talked down to by people he encountered in his life. All of it told him something, however. That he ain't any of those things.
"I'm not just human. I'm a Kree. The son of a Kree who wanted to do right." He corrected the Intelligence.
"On Hala, you were reborn, Rold."
Harry looked down at the charred dog tag that had 'rold' on it.
"No. I'm Harold Lawson." He corrected the Intelligence again and charged his hands up and the Intelligence shot out a beam at him, which he pushed through, his powers spreading through his body.
In reality, Harry's hands started glowing bright in energy, causing the lights on the cruiser to flicker.
"He's trying to break out." Korath said. Yon-Rogg saw the device on Harry's neck and saw that it was sparking.
Elsewhere, as the lights flickered, the cuffs that held Fury and Maria came off and they knocked out the Kree that were escorting them. And the cell that held the Skrulls was starting to shut off and both Talos and Xarill smirked, ready to fight.
Back with the Supreme Intelligence, Harry pushed on through the beam and the environment around them started to darken and fall apart. Harry's powers now charged up so much that he looked like he was burning on fire, and in reality, the biomechanical tendrils started to break apart. Harry stood in front of the Intelligence, not budging, making the Intelligence stop firing the beam in horror.
"It's clear that you and Yon-Rogg forced me to fight with one arm tied behind my back. So it's time to be free." He said with a knowing smirk, grabbing the device off of his neck and smashing it into pieces.
In reality, the device exploded off of Harry's neck as the biomechanical substance came off and Harry's entire body started shining bright of his powers as he stood on his feet and opened his eyes, which glowed pure white.
Harry then made a wave of photon energy, knocking everyone in the room at the walls. He then grabbed the lunchbox containing the Tesseract and ran out.
Both Maria and Fury started to get their asses kicked by the Kree and they aimed their guns at the pair but they got blasted by a large and powerful blast of energy, slamming into the ceiling.
The two looked and saw Harry standing there, shimmering in his powers until it simmered down and dissipated.
"You know you're glowing, right?" Fury questioned as he and Maria got on their feet, Maria grinning at how powerful Harry looked.
"I'll explain later." He told the agent as he opened the lunchbox and showed the Tesseract. Fury pulled out Goose and pulled the muzzle off of her.
"Take the Tesseract. I'll keep the lunchbox." He ordered Fury.
"Me?"
"Yeah." Harry nodded, like it was obvious.
"I'm not touching that thing." He whined.
"Do you want me to get you an oven mitt?" Harry asked. But before Fury could say anything, to the surprise of everyone, Goose meowed and tentacles came out of her mouth and grabbed the Tesseract and she swallowed it up, making Fury drop her in shock.
"Hey, don't drop my pet Flerken!" Harry warned him. He then knelt down and stroked Goose.
"You're full of surprises, aren't ya?" He asked playfully, making Goose meow at him and lick his fingers. He then stood back up.
"Go get the Skrulls onto the Quadjet and get out of here. And you better take care of my Flerken." He then ordered the pair, the last order aimed at Fury before he jogged off.
"What about you?" Maria asked him.
"I'll buy you guys time!" Harry replied as he went around the corner.
Fury looked back down at Goose, who looked up at him.
"I'm picking you up now." He said, grabbing her into his arms as Maria grabbed a gun.
"I'm trusting you not to eat me." Fury muttered as Goose purred.
I wanted the suit to have it's colour scheme slightly different as the way the glow looked, it was as though it made a figure look like they're burning fire like a phoenix and the gold could complement that.
