In the hospital, Mac was sitting vigil by Rebecca's side. "You did not deserve that Rebecca. Whatever's making you hurt? Let me in," he whispered before he saw Hawkes. "What's her prognosis on getting out of here soon?"
"My girlfriend is so stubborn so we all know that answer. Not for a while. But Sid and I looked her over. We found defensive wounds and no offensive wounds. Her knuckles were intact but her hands are showing signs of subdermal bruising. No signs of her fighting back. Meaning she probably did know her attacker on a more personal level," Hawkes explained. He then looked at her face and smiled sadly pulling out the photo they had found of a younger Rebecca all beaten up. "She doesn't deserve this. Nobody does."
"It's a miracle she was still alive when we found her. First Colic and now this," Mac responded. He knew Talon shooting at her was probably water under the bridge in Rebecca's own eyes so he didn't dare bring it up around her. "We have any idea as to who it could be?"
"No. Gravitational droplets and spatters show that Rebecca fought her attacker, or more accurately, got beat up in the living room with full force. When she was certain he was gone she dragged herself to the kitchen and managed to start dialing a number. Instead of 911 she picked to start dialing your phone number as it was open on the recommended phone number," Hawkes explained. Mac looked at Rebecca shocked. "She knew that if anyone could do something it would be you. She also knew we'd be at the lab too."
"She was calling for backup," Mac breathed in shock before he saw Stella walk in with the Diners. "Doctors say she's stable. We just have to give her time," he assured them. He watched as Martin approached and sat beside her which only made her monitor start to speed up. "Becka? It's okay. It's just Martin," he began before it settled a bit. "I'm so sorry about that. It's been a long year for her."
"We know. Stella just finished telling us," he assured as he looked at her. "Is it true? That Rebecca was never really?"
"I'm not sure about the mental trauma. But I'm sure about her behaviours. It was all an act. Rebecca and Talon were in a family of complex thinkers. Talon and her each made their own ruses to protect themselves from something. For Rebecca? It was protecting her brothers and trying to make herself feel a little normal with the trauma her parents brought. We're looking into them now." Martin nodded before finally watched at the same time as Mac as they saw her eyes open. "Becka?"
"Mac? What?" She yawned before looking at him. "What happened? Where am I?" Mac looked worried but regardless let her sit up and drink a little water.
Stella walked in with Flack who immediately hugged her upon seeing she was awake. "You had us all worried. We found you face down on the ground in your own blood. Apparently you tried to get a call out to Mac for help," Flack explained sitting with her. "Do you remember letting anyone into your apartment?"
"No," she answered looking frustrated. "Are we any closer with the letters and getting ink lifted from them? Seeing who wrote them? Any grudges my brother may have with someone within Manhattan?" Mac looked at her shocked. "I'm fine. I'll be out of here within a couple hours probably. Nothing broke," she responded.
"No but you sprained your wrist in the fight," Mac warned her and she shrugged at that. "You really should consider taking more than a week off this time," he warned her and she looked at Mac annoyed. "I'm not kidding around. Someone wanted you dead."
"Well they're going to have to try harder than what they have been to get me killed." She looked at him. "We have to work faster than them. I never show anyone my place, so someone knows more than they should." Hawkes nodded at that knowing the secret reason why she wanted to end the case quickly.
"Have you heard from your brother?" Martin knew that Rebecca and Isaiah always viewed each other as family, even when she ran away. Mac looked at Martin and Rebecca shocked, but Rebecca shook her head at him. "He wasn't home this morning and we knew we had been in contact with you so we thought he came to find you."
Rebecca looked miffed at that and then glanced to Mac. "When we get out of here, we're going back to the lab. I am allowed to process the scene of my own apartment," she warned and Mac nodded at that. He could tell that the disappearance of Isaiah now had her full attention.
After another few hours, Rebecca finally was able to discharge herself and she got into the car with Mac and Stella. "So Martin coming around was a shocker. No Emilia?" Mac shook his head and she chuckled hollowly. "I didn't think she would."
"You sound a bit more wary of Martin," Mac noted. He had watched her demeanor during the entire visit with Martin Diner and each moment got tenser between the two of them. She nodded at that and then glanced out the window. "Was Isaiah the one they were afraid you were?"
"Going to mess up? Yeah. He was their only kid. They lost all other children in miscarriages," she explained before they arrived at the lab. "So the fact that he's all of a sudden out of reach? Not a good sign," she continued before smiling as she saw Jo waiting for them and she rushed over. "I'm alright. Just a little banged up again."
"They just keep coming for you," she teased back before they walked into trace where there were samples. "We picked up anything that seemed odd in your apartment. Danny is running a hair he found that we know isn't any of our's and not your's through all databases. We also found this," Jo began handing over a bag as Rebecca and Mac now had gloves on their hands. As it was dumped out, Rebecca looked at it carefully and frowned. "You know what it is?"
"Charm bracelet in shambles. I personally made that bracelet but it's not the same as it was. So either it's owner lost it or destroyed it," she responded and Mac looked at her. "It was Isaiah's," she explained looking at him. "When we were close, we did a lot of stuff together. We did a stupid little jewlery craft because Emilia was sick of my package sitting on the table so we did it together. He made me an anklet and I made a bracelet to use up the pieces."
"We sure it's not your anklet?" Rebecca angled her foot to reveal a metal chain around her right ankle. "Nevermind," Stella responded. As Rebecca grabbed the fume gun, they watched as a print appeared on a heart charm. "Let's hope his prints are in AFIS or CODIS or even a local database," she responded as she placed the print into the scanner.
"Should be. Isaiah was going into an industry where prints were required last we talked," Rebecca responded and Mac looked at her. "I'm done playing the hopeful card. Isaiah's missing? His charm bracelet is found in the apartment? I'm sorry it doesn't take much to put two and two together."
"Let's wait for some evidence first." Mac knew that Rebecca as much as she was a Crime Scene Investigator, she was only human. She had a heart that anyone in the lab could testify was a heart of gold. She'd do whatever she needed to help others. Even if it meant hurting herself.
"I got a DNA sample match from the hair. We got references from Martin and Emilia merely to eliminate them as they could have been to Rebecca's flat. It came back as a match on the 13 loci for Martin and Emilia," Danny reported.
"Their kid," Stella began looking at Rebecca who looked grim. "Has Isaiah ever been to your place?"
"Never. The Diners were once and that was when I first moved back in the day I started at the lab. Isaiah wasn't with them at that time though," she explained. She looked pensive and then stared at the bracelet. "I'm going into town. I have some connections in the same area where we lived. So maybe someone's seen Isaiah. I'm borrowing Flack," she informed.
"Hey! I'm not like a library book."
"Today you are Don. Today you are," she responded before going down to the streets with him. "If Isaiah is involved, I want to know why."
"Are you sure you're not just freaking out because you're technically now Mac's and Stella's charge again?" She glared at him and he chuckled at that. "I'm just pointing it out to you," he informed and she hit him alongside the head. "So it is about them."
"It's about cleaning this up."
