The Killer Bass were sitting around the campfire. Katie had just been eliminated. After an hour, the Screaming Gophers came.
"Here to rub it in?" asked Eva.
"We just thought we'd share some snacks." Trent answered.
Eva raised an eyebrow.
"Ok, Owen stunk up the cabin and it needs to air out." admitted Gwen. "Anyone want some jelly?" she asked, holding up a plate of green gelatin with gummy worms in it.
"GET THOSE AWAY!!" shrieked DJ, knocking the plate out of her hands.
"Dude, they're just gummy worms. Chill." said Cody, picking up a gummy worm to show him.
"Sorry." DJ apologized. "Snakes just freak me out."
One by one, every camper admitted their worst fear.
"Being covered by bugs is my worst nightmare." said Beth.
"Flying. That's some crazy stuff." said Owen.
Every single camper admitted his or her worst fear. Every camper except Eva.
"Spill it, Eva." said Duncan. "Everybody's scared of something."
"Bats." Eva admitted. "They're like flying sewer rats that can give you rabies."
The Next Morning
The campers were eating breakfast. Chris entered the Mess Hall with a smirk.
"Today's challenge is called Phobia Factor." he announced. "Prepare to face your worst fears."
Several Hours Later
The score was tied 7 to 7. The Killer Bass were counting on Eva to win the challenge and thus win invincibility.
"Ready for your challenge?" asked Chris.
"Let's just get this over with." answered Eva.
"Come with me." replied Chris. He lead her to a cave.
"Your challenge is to spend twenty minutes in a bat infested cave." Chris explained.
Eva nodded and entered the cave. "It's just twenty minutes." she told herself. "Not even half an hour."
A bat flew by her, and she jumped. Another bat started screeching.
Eva sat on the ground. "I'm ok." she told herself. Another bat flew by her head. She started shaking and sweating profusely. "It's just twenty minutes." she said to herself over and over.
After six minutes, she started to cry. Her thoughts were racing, and she felt sick to her stomach.
"I probably have rabies already." she thought.
After twenty minutes, Eva got up and walked out of the cave, tears still streaming down her cheeks.
"We won!" Bridgette excitedly shouted. "Are you ok? What's wrong?" she asked, noticing the state Eva was in.
Eva didn't respond.
"Eva? Can you hear me? What's up?" Bridgette continued.
Just then, Izzy came.
"Looks like you guys won." she said. "Maybe the Gophers will do better next time." Then she noticed the state Eva was in. "You alright?" she asked.
Eva didn't answer.
"Here's a pen and notebook." said Izzy, handing her a notepad and pen.
"Write if you can't talk right now."
"So. Many. Bats." Eva quickly wrote. "And I'm still terrified."
"Let's go to the cabin." said Bridgette. "And you need to come with us." she added, looking at Izzy.
Bridgette, Eva, and Izzy walked to the Killer Bass cabin. Eva sat on her bed. Bridgette sat beside her, and Izzy sat on the floor.
"Do you need anything?" asked Bridgette
"Water and music." wrote Eva.
Bridgette got up and handed her a bottle of water. Then she gave Eva her mp3 player.
Eva put her ear buds in, and slowly sipped water. After the first song, she had stopped crying and sweating. After five songs, she stopped shaking. After ten songs, she felt like she could talk again. She removed her earbuds .
"So, what happened?" asked Bridgette.
Eva looked away.
"It's nothing to be embarrassed about." Izzy reassured her.
"I have a severe phobia of bats." said Eva.
"You already told us last night." Bridgette replied.
"But I didn't tell you how bad it was." Eva continued. "If I see or hear them, or know that bats are near me, I get all shaky. I sweat and start feeling nauseous. I break down sobbing like a toddler. And I lose my voice. Even when I finally get to somewhere that's bat free, it takes me at least thirty minutes to feel normal again."
"She told me that when we became friends during the Awake-a-thon." Izzy blurted out.
"What made you stay in the cave for the full twenty minutes?" asked Bridgette.
"My team was counting on me." Eva answered. "By the way, wanna join our inter-team alliance? We need a third member since Noah got voted off."
"Um, sure." said Bridgette.
"Go Team E-Scope!" shouted Izzy.
The End
