ROLL TITLES

1 EXT. BERLIN - NIGHT
[Track 1: Crib] East Germany, 1975. A cold, wet night, and it shows. As the camera pans across the wall, decorated with the graffiti of Westerners on one side, and as blank and grim as the weather of the evening on the other. Guards stand at outposts, the air so cold that their breath leaves as much impression on their environment as the guns and rifles in their hands. The world is, for now, still. Waiting for something to happen.
The camera continues on, flying over the border, showing us the stillness of the night. The only disturbance is the flicker of a light every now and then, quickly shut off in an instant.

2 EXT. ALLEYWAY - NIGHT
But not everything is silent. Not everything is still. One man, in his mid-to-late forties, speaks to his family, an older woman and three children in their early to mid teens. They are emotional, and share a hug.

BRUNO
I must go. You know that! You know that. Come on.

The middle child, a boy, draws in a sharp sigh.

OTTO
But- But, Vati, what if… What if it's not safe?

BRUNO
Of course it isn't safe, Otto. But… in life, we all take risks for the greater good. Or else, how do we make change?

OTTO
I suppose… I'll miss you, Vati.

BRUNO
I'll miss you too.

He checks his watch.

BRUNO
Oh, I've got to go. Mama, you will look after them, won't you?

The older woman nods.

PAULA
Of course I will, of course, Bruno! Now go!

BRUNO
I know, I know!

Bruno brings his mother and children in for a hug one last time.

BRUNO
Be good for your Oma, okay? Elsie, Heidi, Otto. You'll be with me before you know it.

HEIDI
Vati.

BRUNO
I love you all.

Heidi, the eldest, wipes a tear away from her eye. The group wave Bruno goodbye, occasionally blowing him kisses as he leaves the home. We follow Bruno, who journeys down the road and into an older, worn-down building about two or three homes from the wall.

3 EXT. BERLIN WALL - NIGHT
Here, he is met by an older man, who's gaze never remains in one place. His view shifts from corner to corner, waiting for something to go wrong in an instant.

ANDRE
Your papers, please?

Bruno nods, passing him his identity papers. The man checks them, scanning them carefully.

ANDRE
Good. You may proceed. Through the next room.

Bruno starts to move, not wanting to be there a moment longer.

ANDRE
Ah- but first, I'll need… payment.

Bruno had almost forgotten. He nods, searching in his coat pockets. Both men stand there, a tense moment as both suspect the other of not being entirely what they seem. After what feels like forever, he fishes out a bag. The money clinks and rustles in the bag. It is passed from one man to another.

BRUNO
Is that everything?

ANDRE
Yes. Now, you may go. Through there… there's a wardrobe. You can find the tunnel just below.

BRUNO
Thank you. Thank you, sir. This means… You don't know how much this means to me!

ANDRE
It is the least I can do. You have a family?

BRUNO
I do, yes. Three children.

ANDRE
Then you understand how important it is to change this. For them. Out there, the world's carrying on. Improving. In the west, they live blissfully unaware of the horrors we face. Whilst we, in here… we must fight for our children.

BRUNO
I couldn't agree more. I remember when the wall first came up. I was… young, then, No older than they are now. I want… different lives for them. Out there. Greater lives.

ANDRE
Eh, well, don't we all want that?

Bruno steps through, into the room.

4 INT. PASSAGE - NIGHT
The room inside is just as damp and dirty as the rest of the house. Little care has been put into anything aside from the wardrobe, which is now moved once more from the spot. Beneath is a small hole, barely big enough for Bruno to fit inside. Bruno crawls in, squinting in the darkness. The small gap is difficult to crawl through, but he continues. He moves like his life depends on it, which, in a way, it does. And once he is at the end, Bruno gasps in relief, grinning at the sight of the night sky above him. The stars of freedom, which he and his family have dreamed of for years.

BRUNO
Oh, you are beautiful…

Bruno climbs out of the hole, climbing closer and closer to freedom. And he's free. He's safe, and secure, and all he has to worry about now is getting his family out there with him.

5 EXT. BERLIN WALL - NIGHT
But not for long. Bruno realises he recognises where he is, a frown resting on his brow, creasing his face.

BRUNO
Wait a minute… I know here! This… this isn't freedom! This is… I am still inside the wall!

SOLDIER
Indeed you are, Mr Hoffman. A most unfortunate predicament, indeed.

Bruno realises where he is, and what will happen next. He does not fight, nor scream or shout. He has heard only rumours and stories about the deceit of his peers. In the past, he'd had neighbours vanish, whole families disappear overnight. But he had never seen it himself before. Three soldiers stand in front of Bruno, guns poised to kill.

SOLDIER
You do not shout. I like that. I prefer it when they know not to scream…

And in that moment, that horrific, crushing moment, all of Bruno's hopes and fears seemed to not matter anymore. As far as he knew, his whole family was done for, assigned the same fate as he would be: dead and buried before he knew it. All their work to escape, for nothing.

SOLDIER
Gentlemen. Aim…

The camera turns away, following the wall once more. Dawn begins to rise, and on the other side of the wall, life begins to bustle once again. Birds whistle and sing to one another, unaware of the horrors nearby. Nightclubs begin to close, bakeries, stores and cafes begin to open, and the cycle repeats once more. Another day dawns on the West, whilst the East still remains stuck as it always has been. [Track 1 ends]

6 INT. TARDIS
[Track 2: Montgomery, 1955 0:00 – 1:22] Far, far away, in a completely different part of the universe, and a completely different time, the Doctor and Zach enter the TARDIS control room, the former clearly apologetic.

DOCTOR
Okay, I'll admit it. Wrong time.

ZACH
Wrong time?

DOCTOR
And place.

ZACH
Glad you worked out that taking us to the planet of the giant, angry beavers… was bad.

DOCTOR
I know. Really, really, really sorry about that! I forgot about the whole… locals thing. I really ought to check the brochure more.

ZACH
It's fine… Good thing you had your sonic, or else we'd be… what do beavers normally eat?

DOCTOR
Wood, I think.

ZACH
Ooh, there's a dirty joke in there somewhere.

The Doctor walks up to the console, eyeing the buttons.

DOCTOR
Tell you what, Zach… I'll make it up to you! Pick a time and place. I'll take you there! What good's a time machine if you can't visit the good bits, eh?

ZACH
What, right now?

DOCTOR
'Course! You've not got any plans, have you?

ZACH
Well… no, but-

The Doctor moves around the console excitedly, flicking a switch and allowing the TARDIS to take off. The rotor rises and falls gradually, in its familiar rhythm. Lights echo the pattern, the ship giving a low hum to the atmosphere.

DOCTOR
Right! We are gonna have a lot of fun. So, Zach, got any ideas?

ZACH
You're not really giving me much time to think-

DOCTOR
Hold that thought.

A small red dot flashes on the console, beeping loudly to get the Doctor's attention.

DOCTOR
That's not good. Not good at all.

ZACH
What is it?

DOCTOR
Alien signals. On Earth, by the looks of things. My Earth button's going off!

ZACH
Your Earth button? You mean you have a button for Earth?

DOCTOR
'Course I do! You guys get yourself in trouble quite a bit. I just… don't use it that often! Must have switched on after a TARDIS update… strange.

ZACH
Well, where's the signal coming from? Home? As in, my home?

DOCTOR
Not quite. It's… oh, oh, hang on… 1989.

ZACH
1989?

DOCTOR
1989! Lovely year! Doesn't say where though… just the year. Well, I do like a surprise! We'll have to delay the fun. Sorry!

ZACH
Wait, Doctor! Is it saf-

DOCTOR
Here we go!

The TARDIS flies through the time vortex, zooming to its destination. The TARDIS arrives before Zach and the Doctor even realise it. [Track 2 ends]

7 EXT. EAST BERLIN STREETS - DAY
[Track 3: Theoretically] The TARDIS materialises on the streets of West Berlin, in the late hours of the morning. There are only a few people out on the street; all of whom walk alone. Their clothes are hand-me-downs, some more torn than others. Each and every one has a despondent idleness to their faces. Advanced security cameras are built into the walls, feeling very anachronistic in the historical environment. The Doctor throws open the TARDIS doors, running out.

DOCTOR
Welcome to history! 1989, brilliant year! Internet invented, biggest solar storm in history, Madonna released "Like A Prayer"…

ZACH
I was born.

Zach has started to wander. He stops dead in his tracks at the end of the road, looking to the right, out of view.

ZACH
Doctor…

DOCTOR
The architecture's familiar, but I can't quite place it.

ZACH
No, but- Doctor.

DOCTOR
Sweden? No…

ZACH
Doctor!

Zach points to his right. The Doctor stops rambling, joining Zach and doing as asked.

DOCTOR
Oh, wow

The Doctor and Zach are looking at the Berlin wall.

ZACH
1989. Internet, solar storm, Madonna… and fall of the Berlin Wall.

DOCTOR
Been a while since I've seen it myself though…

ZACH
Okay, this is- mad. When we were teenagers, my sister wouldn't stop banging on about it. Mainly because she was trying to pull this new guy who moved from West Germany. He was like four years older than her, mind... Hang on. Is that why we're here?

DOCTOR
Could be. Big event like this in Earth history… wouldn't surprise me if there were a few aliens looking to mess with it.

ZACH
But what for?

DOCTOR
Who knows? To feed off of the paradox? Or… maybe to try and make an Earth suited to their needs… Could be trying to get my attention.

Zach slowly walks closer to the wall, in awe.

ZACH
That must be it then, yeah? Some… alien, trying to make sure the wall doesn't fall? Seems easy enough. We just need to find the aliens and stop them.

DOCTOR
If there's aliens. Could just be alien tech! There's the problem. Most of the time, I never seem to realise the problem until it's staring me in the face…

ZACH
Maybe you and us humans aren't too different after all.

The Doctor and Zach share a smile. Zach is stopped, just moments before he touches the wall.

OTTO
Stop!

Zach does as he is told, stopping in his tracks. Both travellers turn to face the noise.

OTTO
Do not touch the wall! They watch the wall.

Otto is now in his mid-to-late twenties, stood in the doorway of his home. The house has not aged well- the frayed tiles of the roof have only fallen further and further into oblivion, the paint had seen better days, and any semblance of firm brickwork had long gone. The house was being kept together by those within it.

OTTO
Come, quick. There may still be time. In here, now!

He gestures for the Doctor and Zach to follow him inside. After shrugging, they obey, rushing in. [Track 3 ends]

8 INT. SURVEILLANCE OFFICE – DAY
In a dark, dingy room – almost like a dungeon with its high-rise window shedding a small stream of light into the brick structure, two people in the shadows watch the camera feed on the street. There are a few people still shifting about uncomfortably, averting their gaze from the camera, which is obviously focused on the TARDIS.

MEYER
There. That's the place. We've found 'em.

9 INT. HOFFMAN HOME - DAY
[Track 4: Nancy and Barb] Otto closes the door behind them, firmly bolting it. Otto speaks to his two sisters, about the same age as him.

OTTO
Did you see any guards?

ELSIE
No. No, I think it was safe. For now.

ZACH
What's going on?

HEIDI
You do not know? Where have you been?!

ZACH
We… travel. A lot.

ELSIE
For 27 years?

ZACH
Well, I did say a lot.

OTTO
Who are you?

DOCTOR
Well, I'm the Doctor, he's Zach. Hi!

HEIDI
Doctor who?

DOCTOR
That's the one! Oh, but just 'The Doctor' will do.

The siblings communicate concern via just their facial expressions, staying silent. Heidi mouths a suggestion of a codename to Otto and Elsie. There is an awkward silence between the group, which the Doctor does her best to change.

DOCTOR
You know, I think you just saved our life. Not sure from what, though. Care to explain what's going on? For us… travellers, 'course.

Otto gives in, sighing.

OTTO
It's the guards.

ZACH
What about them?

OTTO
They're… dangerous. Worse than usual. As I am sure you know- or perhaps you don't, with all your 'travelling', they've always been dangerous. But… you're certain you don't know?

DOCTOR
Promise. Cross my hearts!

OTTO
You must understand… it isn't safe to… talk ill of our leaders. It could get us killed. Our whole families could die. You- You understand that, don't you?

ELSIE
Otto, are you sure about this? These are strangers… One of them doesn't even have a name!

OTTO
Elsie. We have to trust them. We must. These days, anyone can help. We're at the end of our tether anyway… We need help, right, Heidi?

HEIDI
He's right. We need any help that we can.

Heidi turns to The Doctor.

HEIDI
Doctor… if that is your name, we need you. My younger siblings, Otto and Elsie, don't remember a time before the wall as well as I do. They do not understand what it's like to be free. I want them, and for all of my friends and their own families, to have the same memories as I do. Will you help us?

[Track 4 ends]

DOCTOR
I'll do what I can. But I'll need you to tell me what's going on, first. I promise.

She's more sincere with her offer this time, and it shows. The Hoffmans can tell. [Track 5: Where's Barb?]

OTTO
It started when… Chernenko died. That was… I think, '84, '85?

ELSIE
1985.

OTTO
Yes, 1985. When he died, there was this… change, in government.

ZACH
And… Chernenko is- was the… Soviet leader?

OTTO
In general terms, yes. You must understand, there is supposed to be no 'leader' of the Soviet Party, surely, but… yes. He was old already when he came into the job. Well, once he died, this new man came into the role. Sergei Romanov. Now, before this, more and more people were escaping the country. It looked like, maybe, just maybe there was hope. But Romanov put a stop to that.

DOCTOR
Hang on- Sergei Romanov? ...Nope. Not ringing any bells.

The Doctor leans in to Zach.

DOCTOR
I think we've found our problem.

OTTO
Well, you have been 'travelling'.

DOCTOR
What happened next?

OTTO
Well, Romanov, he came in and really locked down the wall. Started this new wave of secrecy. More stasi than ever. Enlarged the death strip. Put bugs everywhere. Encouraged reporting your neighbours… Nowhere's safe anymore.

ELSIE
We used to have an old neighbour named Mrs. Schmidt. She vanished overnight. But she wasn't the only one. Plenty of people were just… vanishing without notice!

ZACH
So what did you do?

HEIDI
What we had to. People don't just disappear. So we've spent every day ever since looking for a way to bring it all down. Been recruiting all across East Germany. It's how we know about new rules before they come out. There's this… rebellion group. Call themselves the 'Western Warriors'. Original, I know. Well, when our dad… escaped, they invited us in to join him. Now, we're working on getting out there.

DOCTOR
Your dad escaped?

HEIDI
About fifteen years ago now. When he did, we were all taken in. Questioned like dirt. We were only children! And our poor Grandma.

Heidi shakes her head.

HEIDI
She could barely cope. After a while, they let us go. Had to. But if we were older, maybe… If I was older… well, I'm not sure I'd still be standing here today.

DOCTOR
I'm sorry to hear that.

ELSIE
But you'll help us? You will, won't you?

DOCTOR
When people need help, I never refuse. I'm in.

The group all smile.

HEIDI
I think, Doctor… you'll be a big help to us all.

DOCTOR
I aim to please!

[Track 5 ends]

10 EXT. BERLIN-LITCHENBERG - DAY
[Track 6: The Rapids] For Colonel Jochen Meyer, the news is particularly concerning. Meyer is a man in his late 50s, who sits at a formidable height, his uniform immaculate. He is a man who prefers his routine to stay that way, and the slightest bit of oppression must be crushed before it becomes extreme.

MEYER
I don't understand, gentlemen. How could a blue box appear overnight? We have patrols for this very reason! If the West are able to carry a large peoplecarrier into our nation, who knows what else they could hide in our wall! Do you understand?!

The two men he is speaking to look down at Meyer's desk and mumble.

MEYER
I didn't hear you!

The men finally give a (hesitant) yes.

MEYER
Excellent. Now, I want your finest men down there investigating for any signs of traitors! We cannot have traitors in East Berlin. I want the box taken and investigated for clues. Now!

The men nod, quickly scrambling out of Meyer's office. Meyer is still not pleased.

MEYER
The Stasi just isn't what it used to be…

Meyer is blindsided, for a moment, by a wave of nostalgia for the 'good old days', shaking his head and moustache furiously. However, this does not last, as from inside his desk a small beeping noise commences. It is a noise Meyer knows well, and at once, he is attentive. Jumping out of his chair, Meyer slams his door firmly shut, bolting it, and closing all blinds and contact with the outside world. Once this is completed, the colonel pulls a small screen out of his bottom drawer. The screen is small, compact and a slick silver- nothing like the televisions of 1989, or even the next four or five Earth centuries. The tech is certainly alien.

MEYER
Ah! I was wondering when you would call me…

Meyer does his best to seem calm. In fact, he is terrified of the creature on the screen. It is an armoured creature, decorated in intricate swirls, circles and patterns, not too dissimilar to the old Gallifreyan armour from before the Time War. Notably, a mask, adorned with rows upon rows of tinted glass for eyes hides the identity of the wearer. The figure speaks with a low, husky voice. It is just as displeased as Meyer.

KYROS
Is it true, Meyer?

MEYER
It is. I'm sure of it.

KYROS
The blue box? It has been located, at last?

MEYER

It has! Just a few miles from the border.

KYROS
Excellent! Bring it forth. I must have it. I must have the Doctor. Has he been sighted?

MEYER
Not yet, Commander…

KYROS
Then you must locate him! At once! He is a threat to the plan. Have the box sent to the transmat.

MEYER
At once, Commander. How exactly can we achieve this?

KYROS
Compassion, Meyer. With your military tactics, you will draw the Doctor out like a, how do you say it? A moth to a flame.

Meyer gulps, sensing he has made a grave mistake. [Track 6 ends]

11 INT. HOFFMAN HOME - DAY
For the last half an hour, the Doctor has been sat down with the Hoffmans, trying to catch up on the last four years. As we rejoin the group, the Doctor now has a warm drink in hand. Zach is in another world, staring out of one of the windows out onto the street.

DOCTOR
So, let me get this straight. In 1985, Sergei Romanov becomes leader of the Soviet Party-

OTTO
General Secretary.

DOCTOR
Right, yeah. General Secretary. And then he… what, starts invading other countries again?

OTTO
Yes. I remember watching the reporting of when they invaded Finland live on television. That was… '86?

DOCTOR
And that led to political unrest.

OTTO
Very much so. America was that close to dropping bombs on Moscow… only thing that stopped them was the fact that nobody was sure what Romanov would do next. Nobody knew if Romanov would use his nukes- or just how many or powerful they were, of course.

DOCTOR
So for the last four years, it's been a case of who'd press the button first? Like it was in the 50s.

OTTO
Yes. So if we overthrow Romanov, we could save the world.

HEIDI
We wish, Otto. Romanov's in Moscow! We'd have no chance.

DOCTOR
Maybe…

The Doctor notices Zach's silence, and frowns.

DOCTOR
One sec.

The Doctor moves to Zach's side, following his eyeline to the wall.

DOCTOR
How are you doing?

ZACH
Um… not freaking out. Yet. How do you get used to it? It's like… it was never part of my history. Just something we learned about at school, but… at the same time, it is part of my history. I know that makes no sense, but you catch my drift.

DOCTOR
It's just a shame we're not here in better circumstances. I took Ace here once. Couple years back. But right now, someone's messed with history and I don't know if I can fix it. Not yet.

ZACH
But you have to fix it, right? The world can't end in 1985, or 1989, or whenever because I'm proof it didn't. I was too young to remember the Wall, it's not around by my time. The Cold War's over, pretty much has been since the 70s.

DOCTOR
Time can be rewritten. That's what worries me… I just need to find a way to speak to this Sergei Romanov, and I'm sure this'll all be over. Maybe find a way to fix all this mess…

[Track 7: Écoust-Saint-Mein] Zach has been staring out the window, the whole time, and gasps. Several uniformed Stasi officers are parading onto the street towards one house, heavily armed and aggressive, one in particular standing by and yelling orders.

ZACH
What's going on?

Immediately, the Doctor rushes out of the door, and down the street towards the officers. Zach and Otto leave also, chasing after the Doctor.

12 EXT. WEST BERLIN STREETS - DAY
The officers break down the front door and storm in, screams crying out from inside. The Doctor, now joined by Zach and Otto, watches the Stasi officers who are carrying out a mother and her two children who are all kicking and screaming.

DOCTOR
Shouldn't interfere, shouldn't interfere, shouldn't interfere- Oi!

ZACH
And interfering.

DOCTOR
What do you think you're doing?

GENERAL
They have violated the law. That's all you need to know.

DOCTOR
They're kids!

GENERAL
They have been producing propaganda against our government. They will be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Now, if you don't mind, I'd like to get on with my job. I recommend you stay out of the way if you don't want to fall into the same fate as these people here.

He strolls off, as the Doctor scowls at him.

DOCTOR
Does this happen a lot?

OTTO
All the time. Like I said, they watch everything.

He points to the security camera.

DOCTOR
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but that looks a little out of time, don't you think, Zach?

ZACH
Just a bit.

DOCTOR
Getting a closer look at that.

OTTO
No, don't. Not with the soldiers around. Tampering with them leads to five years in a labour camp.

Once again, a scowl forms on the Doctor's face.

ZACH
Oh, you've got to be kidding me!

More Stasi officers arrive on the scene, lifting the TARDIS into a bulky lorry.

DOCTOR
Oi! Oi! No! Hey! That's… my box! That is my box!

The men stop, much to the general's annoyance.

GENERAL
Why have you stopped?! Continue!

DOCTOR
Please! Listen to me! You do not want to move that box! It's important!

GENERAL
You again! I told you, stay out of our way! In fact, we might have to arrest you for interloping.

DOCTOR
I think you'll find that's where I thrive.

GENERAL
What's your name?

DOCTOR
I'm… Doctor Sarah Jane Smith.

GENERAL
And you claim ownership of this box, Frau Smith?

DOCTOR
I do.

GENERAL
Then we have found our fugitive. Gentlemen, arrest her and her associates!

OTTO
What?!

ZACH
Every time…!

The men, having successfully moved the TARDIS into the van, arrest the Doctor, Zach and Otto, but are stopped before they can be placed in the same van as the TARDIS.

GENERAL
Wait.

The group comes to a halt.

GENERAL
I have been given special commands, from Herr Meyer himself. These prisoners are to be escorted with me. I shall take them for questioning…

He greedily stares at The Doctor.

GENERAL
...after which, they shall be shot. Unless, of course… the colonel finds a use for you.

DOCTOR
Oh, he's a colonel, is he? Any chance he has a direct line with Sergei Romanov?

The soldiers laugh.

DOCTOR
What? What's so funny?

GENERAL
As if the great leader would wish to speak to traitors like you. Put them in the back.

The trio are shoved into the back of the general's sleek, black, (then) modern car.

OTTO
Ow!

ZACH
Hey, hey, watch it!

The general, meanwhile, sits in his passenger seat in the front, and turns to his driver.

GENERAL
Take us to Berlin-Lichtenberg. Our prisoners have an appointment with Death Himself…

His eyes glint with glee, knowing that the three prisoners shift uncomfortably in their seats. For him, the chase is over, and he has won. For the Doctor, Zach and Otto, however, the race is only just beginning. [Track 7 ends]

13 INT. BERLIN-LICHTENBERG STASI HQ - DAY
[Track 8: The Upside Down] Upon their arrival, The Doctor, Zach and Otto are ushered out of the car and into a semi-modern concrete building. Once inside, they are taken past several corridors of businessmen and women, all of whom seemed totally unfazed by their arrival. Eventually, they are escorted into a spacious office. The furniture alone dates the room to the 1980s. Along the walls, there are multiple posters in support of the Soviet Communist Party and its policies. The desk of whoever owned the room was large. So large, in fact, that the curved edges almost create a circle, save for the gap for someone to enter the desk. The Doctor sits down on one of the black leather seats, grinning at the Stasi officers who escorted the group into the office.

DOCTOR
Hey, these are comfy!

OFFICER 1
You will remain here. Colonel Meyer will see you soon.

OTTO
Colonel Meyer? Oh no.

ZACH
Who's Colonel Meyer?

The officers smile.

OTTO
I've never met the man myself… from what I've heard he's one of Romanov's best men when it comes to inquisition.

DOCTOR
Nothing I've not dealt with before! Inquisition is my middle name.

Otto looks at her.

DOCTOR
It's not. It's… well, not the point. But I do know what I'm doing! Rule one of rebellion, Otto- if they're paying attention, you're doing it right. We've upset them. Why else would they be calling us in?

OTTO
I'm… not sure. To get rid of us before we're a threat?

DOCTOR
But even that means being a problem to those in power. We'll be fine! Just… let me do the talking.

At long last, Meyer returns to his office.

MEYER
Ah, Doctor!

He sits down in his chair, sliding in so he is at his desk.

MEYER
At ease, gentlemen. You can leave now.

The Stasi officers do as instructed, exiting. At last, Meyer is alone with the captives.

MEYER
Now, Doctor… I have waited for this for a while.

DOCTOR
Oh, I'm sure you ha-

MEYER
I wasn't expecting you to arrive at such a crucial part of the scheme, though. My… associates are overjoyed, all the same.

Meyer gets up, walking slowly towards Zach.

MEYER
You'll be a great help to our plans, I'm sure.

ZACH
Are you speaking to me?

MEYER
Who else would I be speaking to?

ZACH
Uh, I'm… not… the Doctor, you know.

MEYER
I… don't understand. You said it was your box, did you not?

DOCTOR
No, that was me. Hi!

MEYER
The Doctor? A woman? These records must be flawed… I was told to expect a man. I apologise, Doctor. Allow me to make up for the flaw by releasing you from those handcuffs, shall I?

Meyer uncuffs the trio.

MEYER
Now. I think we should get down to business.

The Doctor rubs her wrists. Ouch, those were tight.

DOCTOR
Good idea. What business might that be exactly?

MEYER
It's… interesting you say that. Perhaps my… associates might be able to explain that better than I could.

Colonel Meyer walks up to his desk, removing the small device from his drawer. The screen gives him several options. Pressing a button in an alien language causes the screen to extend the size of a large television on the desk. Meyer steps back, joining the group in watching the screen. The armoured creature from before appears once again.

KYROS
Doctor! We meet at last…

OTTO
What on Earth…?

DOCTOR
No, not Earth, Otto. Alien.

KYROS
And so are you.

OTTO
What-?

ZACH
Yeah, we're not from your time. I'll explain later.

DOCTOR
You know me, then?

KYROS
Know you? We have studied your journeys for hundreds of years. Your adventures in the cosmos have been in our databanks since the genesis of our planet, and before. Poosh, Vroxis, Planet-14, Earth… you are a warrior who never fails. You have saved many lives.

DOCTOR
I just do what I can.

KYROS
And for that, you are remembered.

DOCTOR
Who are you?

KYROS
My name is Kyros. We are the Vyvyrins.

DOCTOR
Oh! Of course! Vyvyrins! Thought the tech was familiar.

KYROS
You are aware of our kind?

DOCTOR
Somewhat. Just what I've read in a few textbooks and heard in your galaxy. Never been to Vyvyris myself.

She glances over to Zach and Otto.

DOCTOR
Electronic creatures, they live in cyberspace like a virus. Choose their virtual form. Makes it very difficult to oppose them. But didn't stop the Ardoblins trying, did it?

OTTO
The Ardoblins? I'm not quite following.

ZACH
You'll have to give her a while, I've worked out she answers your questions eventually.

DOCTOR
The Ardoblins and Vyvyrins have been in a war for centuries. Huge political argument, they think the Vyvyrins don't count as a proper lifeform because they don't live on the same plane as us. But what does that have to do with your presence on Earth? This is galaxies from home! You're behind all this tension, I presume.

KYROS
A necessary evil. It is well-known from your documentation that you are constantly involved in the affairs of this planet. It was also known that my people required a testing ground. We required your attention and a planet to work on… therefore, Earth was selected.

OTTO
Testing ground? What do you mean?

KYROS
The war against Ardoblos cannot be stopped unless we master the art of civil conflict. If we can allow Earth to destroy itself using its own weapons, we could move on to our enemies on Ardoblos and wipe them out in a similar manner.

OTTO
But that's murder! Genocide!

KYROS
All is fair in war, Otto Hoffman.

OTTO
You… know me? How?

KYROS
It is my job to control the Soviet affairs in our attempts of war. I am the man you know as Sergei Romanov, hidden by a perception filter. The Vyvyrins never forget faces or names. It was my duty to call for your family's interrogation after your father's attempted escape. It is now my duty once more to rectify your family. It seems our attempts at intimidation at first were… unsuccessful.

OTTO
Attempted escape? No, no. He escaped! I know he did.

KYROS
You know what we wish for you to know. But, since you now already know too much, it will not harm our plans to inform you that your father is dead.

OTTO
I… no… no, no, no… He can't be!

KYROS
Your father, Bruno Hoffman, was killed on the night of October 11th, 1975 after he was found escaping by our agents.

OTTO
You killed him? You killed him?!

ZACH
Otto, calm down…

The Doctor and Zach look a mixture of horrified and deeply concerned. Zach clutches Otto's arm as Otto tries to pull away.

OTTO
You killed him! You killed my father!

ZACH
Otto, please!

OTTO
My… that was my father, Zach! And you expect me to… stand back, and let that happen?

Otto is a mess. He begins to break down, on the verge of sobbing.

DOCTOR
Proud of yourself, Kyros?

KYROS
He is not relevant to the discussion, Doctor. This conversation is between me and you.

DOCTOR
You think I'd help you after what you've done? You've changed the course of history, killed countless innocent people in invasions and escape attempts, almost caused a nuclear war and you want me to help you?!

KYROS
Yes.

DOCTOR
Oh, mate… you have no idea who I am, do you?

KYROS
I… don't understand?

DOCTOR
I'm the Doctor. I'm the one who stops the bad guys, and I will never let you hurt my friends!

Zach has sat Otto down on one of the leather chairs. Searching his pockets, he finds some tissues, handing them to Otto. Otto wipes away his tears.

DOCTOR
Whatever the Ardoblins have done could never deserve this! The killing of people on the other half of the Universe? I remember learning about how the Vyvyrins were an advanced race, skilled in crafting new technology, not even considered before. What happened? What caused you to go from that to this?

KYROS
War, Doctor! We presumed from the stories you would understand that!

DOCTOR
No matter who's hurt you, you never answer with violence! You understand? And not on my turf.

Meyer has been stood by, awkwardly watching. [Track 8 ends]

DOCTOR
You know, Meyer, you have done one good thing for me today…

MEYER
Oh, and what's that?

[Track 9: DNA Bombs]

DOCTOR
You brought me to exactly where I needed to be to take you all down.

The Doctor produces her sonic screwdriver, aiming it at the screen.

KYROS
What is that? What are you doing?

MEYER
How did you hide that? We had you searched!

DOCTOR
Old Venusian knitting trick. In other words, secret pocket. I always prefer confronting my enemies face to face. Makes it more personal. You might be on the cyberspace, but there's a central hub somewhere nearby. With this old thing, I'll be able to track the source of your transmission…

The screwdriver whirrs, giving a shrill cry before emitting a result.

DOCTOR
...like that! There we go. As for you, Meyer…

The Doctor turns to Meyer, who is terrified for his own life. He staggers back, into the wall.

MEYER
Doctor, you see… I'm not… one of those… Viv things. I am a human! Like you! They… they brought me into this! Threatened to kill me if I didn't help! Please! Spare me!

DOCTOR
...I was just going to ask where they've taken my TARDIS.

Meyer sighs, relieved, glancing down at his hands that the Doctor grabs.

MEYER
Oh… only to the transmat.

DOCTOR
Transmat? You mean there's a direct link to their planet?

MEYER
Their ship. I've only been on once. But… it was like something off of the television! Their… craft. It floats in the orbit of our planet, you know! They've got no place being near our moon...

DOCTOR
Where is it?

MEYER
Just down the corridor… I think… third door on the right? Follow the stairs…

DOCTOR
Right, thanks!

KYROS
Doctor, you cannot come here! I forbid you!

DOCTOR
Oh, yeah? You and what army?

And like that, the Doctor is gone, rushing down the corridors and rooms to get to the transmat in time.

14 INT. TRANSMAT ROOM - DAY
The Doctor arrives at the transmat - a circular teleportation pad hidden away in an alcove. She stands on the transmat. The Doctor taps her sonic on her palm, hoping for it to work. It flashes a bright yellow.

DOCTOR
Now. No doubt they've turned it off. But… with a little help from my sonic…

The Doctor points her screwdriver at the control box on her left. After a moment, she is somewhere else entirely. Somewhere alien, and somewhere determined not to let her survive. [Track 9 ends]

15 INT. VYVYRIN SHIP
The Doctor is on the shiny white Vyvyrin ship instantly. Putting her sonic away, she quietly slips out into the various corridors of the ship.

DOCTOR
Now… let's see what we're dealing with here, shall we? All you've got to do, Doctor, is find your way to the central hub, confront Kyros, call of the Vyvyrin fleets from ever coming to Earth again, and survive… Simple, really!

The Doctor thinks for a moment, then heads down a corridor eagerly, the cameras eyeing her warily.

16 INT. MEYER'S OFFICE - DAY
[Track 10: I Can Save Them 0:00 – 1:33 (fadeout needed)] Otto and Zach are still on the leather chairs of Meyer's office. Meyer has vanished, running far away from the building before the Doctor can return.

OTTO
My father… dead. Because of that… monster…!

ZACH
I know, Otto. I know..

OTTO
But do you? I have spent every day of my life for the last fourteen years relying on the hope of seeing him again. I fought to get here today because of him. And now… I won't see him again. At all. Ever!

ZACH
Hey, hey. That's not true. Don't say that. Even if he's gone, you still remember him, don't you? You still think about what he said and did for you, right?

OTTO
I… suppose so…

ZACH
So then, he's not dead. Because he still exists for you. And your sisters! And all those who knew him then. Sure, it's…. So, so painful without someone there for you to help but I think- no, I know it gets better without them. In time. You just gotta take it, and work with it, yeah? Let his death inspire you to make change, or use his murder to call for a united Germany again! That's what he'd want, right?

OTTO
Oh, definitely. That was Vati for you…

Otto laughs, remembering. It hurts.

OTTO
Always… smiling. Always kind. Wanted to see the best in people. Like the Doctor. Cross when he wants to be, though. For all the right reasons. I… don't think I'll ever be able to forget him…

ZACH
Bit like the Doctor then, too.

Zach and Otto laugh.

OTTO
Who is she?

ZACH
I don't really know all that much. Only known her a month. She's nice and all, but… starting to miss my family, you know. Never really strayed too far from home until I met her, no-one really did, and I just wonder how far I can go, how much I can see before…

He scoffs a little. [Track 10 fades]

ZACH
Sorry, drifted off there.

OTTO
Zach? Have you… ever lost someone..?

[Track 11: London 0:00 – 0:45]

ZACH
Have I-? Uh, yeah. My brother, he, uh… he died a year ago. Car accident. As for my parents, never really knew them at all.

OTTO
How did you… get over the loss?

ZACH
…I didn't. Not really. It's something that sticks with you. Sorry, not the answer you really wanted. I mean, it gets easier, but you never want to replace them. And I don't think that's a bad thing. If you ignore the losses and pain in life, you never truly enjoy the good moments. Remember the past, but don't let it define the future.

OTTO
Maybe…

Otto nods, in realisation.

OTTO
Yes… Yes! You're right, Zach! Yeah! It is my future! And I can use that to help people!

He gets up from his chair, starting to leave.

ZACH
Hey- Otto, where're you going?

OTTO
To change the future. Come on!

Zach sighs.

ZACH
Oh, no…

He jumps up and chases after him. [Track 11 ends]

17 INT. VYVYRIN SHIP – CENTRAL HUB
[Track 12: Gathering Strength] A computer node in a large space whirrs away violently, babbling a host of different voices before the centre screen reveals the image of Kyros, snarling at the Doctor standing in the doorway, sonic screwdriver in hand.

DOCTOR
Told you I'd see you face to face.

The lights switch on and flicker, zooming around the room, disorienting the Doctor a little.

KYROS
Doctor, you will assist us.

DOCTOR
No.

KYROS
No?

DOCTOR
No. Not after what you've done. I'm not even here to offer to help. But I will offer you one last thing, Kyros.

KYROS
What?

DOCTOR
A second chance. Turn around this ship, go back to Vyvyris now, and we'll forget this whole thing ever happened.

KYROS
You cannot seriously expect us to cancel our research? This work is vital to winning this war!

DOCTOR
It's wrong. It's going to break history!

KYROS
A worthy cost!

DOCTOR
No. I won't let you do that.

KYROS
How will you stop us?

DOCTOR
You've been studying the Cold War. How do you think?

She points the sonic at the computer terminal.

DOCTOR
This ship feeds off nuclear energy. Slow release, allows you to propel yourself through space. But what if I detonated it all right now?

KYROS
The Doctor would never do that. You are peaceful.

DOCTOR
And you've gotten on my nerves. I don't want to do this, but if you're threatening the web of time, I will.

KYROS
I shall not back down. Do it.

The Doctor's hand shakes a little, still pointing the sonic.

DOCTOR
It doesn't have to go this way! This is your last chance!

KYROS
Do it, Doctor!

OTTO
Kyros!

The Doctor spins around, jumping out of her skin a little, seeing Otto and Zach storming in.

DOCTOR
Otto!

ZACH
Sorry.

OTTO
You killed my father. You took away the most important man in the universe from me. And when you did, you didn't even let me grieve. I could have given my father the proper burial he deserves, but instead he could be anywhere. Because of you, I'll never see him again. And you want to continue your tests? Killing more fathers? More sons? Brothers, or aunts, or grandmothers, or… anyone? Never. I will die before I let you do that.

DOCTOR
You need to go.

KYROS
Leverage, I see. You'd murder me but not these innocents. You've lost your bargaining power. Now what are you going to do?

The Doctor holds her sonic screwdriver up in the air.

DOCTOR
Absolutely last chance, Kyros. I want you to speak to Vyvyrin HQ back home, tell them you're going home and to never bring a fleet back here again!

KYROS
I don't think you're listening. I have the power here! I would sooner this ship crashed into the surface of your insufferable Earth before I admitted defeat.

DOCTOR
Alright then. Don't say I didn't warn you.

She aims her sonic, then lets it fall to the floor, crushed by her decision.

KYROS
You're weak.

DOCTOR
No. I decided not to kill. I'm better than you.

KYROS
Keep telling yourself that. Because of you, your precious Earth shall now be destroyed.

A siren wails and the lights flash red.

COMPUTER
Self Destruct: Activated. Course set for: Sol-3. Self destruct in: T-Minus 5 minutes.

DOCTOR
No!

Otto grabs the Doctor's sonic from the floor, storming towards the central terminal.

DOCTOR
Otto!

OTTO
Cancel it.

KYROS
No.

OTTO
Cancel it!

KYROS
No!

OTTO
Then you leave me no choice. You destroyed my family. My life. My future. I'm not letting you destroy anything else. I'm going to destroy you.

DOCTOR
Otto, no!

ZACH
We don't have time for this! We need to escape!

KYROS
There's no escape for any of us.

OTTO
Then I shall get my revenge.

DOCTOR
This isn't the way. Otto, please.

Otto's rage-fueled eyes drop, and he passes the sonic back.

DOCTOR
Thank you. Now for you.

KYROS
Are you still wittering on? I've defeated you.

DOCTOR
I don't think so. Now you've activated the self-destruct, your safeguards are shutting down, one by one.

Suddenly, Kyros screams in agony.

KYROS
ARGH! GAH! What have you done?!

DOCTOR
Fun thing about this time period, is the rapid development of technology. Specifically, computer viruses. You shouldn't have spread your roots across Berlin.

She beams.

18 INT. MEYER'S OFFICE - DAY
The Doctor turns to Meyer, who is terrified for his own life.

Meyer sighs, relieved, glancing down at his hands which the Doctor has grabbed. The Doctor has passed him a memory stick that says "PLUG INTO THE COMPUTERS". He nods.

19 INT. VYVYRIAN SHIP – CENTRAL HUB
Kyros glitches and screams.

DOCTOR
Only way to get rid of that virus is to go home! Get cured. And stay away from Earth!

The screen goes blank, and the ship begins to rumble.

DOCTOR
Come on. Help me find storage- I have a feeling my TARDIS'll be there!

The trio run through the corridors, quickly, the computer counting down all the while as the Vyvyrin ship begins to speed away from Earth. After what feels like forever running, the Doctor, Zach and Otto finally find the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
In, in, quickly!

The Time Lord ushers the two men into the ship, closing the doors behind them.

20 INT. TARDIS
The TARDIS is still as it was when The Doctor and Zach left. As soon as the Doctor is inside, she's dashing around the console.

ZACH
What are you doing?

DOCTOR
Connecting the TARDIS into the Vyvyrins' internal engine source!

OTTO
The what?

DOCTOR
It's the same energy your nukes run off! Hold on.

The ship jerks violently to the left. Otto and Zach hold onto whatever is near them- the doors, the handrail- they can't really tell.

OTTO
Wait… it's bigger…

ZACH
...On the inside, yeah. You… get used to it.

OTTO
But how-

DOCTOR
Need a bit of silence here!

ZACH
What do the engines have to do with anything?

DOCTOR
Any second now, they're going to head back to their own planet. Huge burst of nuclear energy. If I can harness it… If I can harness it!

ZACH
Harness what?!

DOCTOR
Not had to do this in a while… may be a bit… rusty!

OTTO
Doctor, what are you doing?!

She laughs chaotically, terrifying both Zach and Otto.

DOCTOR
Hold on to something! Whooo!

The TARDIS wheezes, smoke pouring out from the top of the time rotor. The ship twists and turns, scattering the group through the control room. As the Vyvyrin ship shoots off, the TARDIS emanates a loud BOOM! before falling silent for a few moments. Soon, Zach lifts his head up. [Track 12 ends]

ZACH
...Did we do it…?

The Doctor is next, sitting up. [Track 13: Me and My Mates 9:03 – 9:30]

DOCTOR
...I think we did!

OTTO
What was that noise?

DOCTOR
We're back in our own time. Normal time. No more Romanov. Ever.

ZACH
Is that- How's that possible?

DOCTOR
I stored the nuclear energy and used it to fit reality back to its normal shape. Basically, the alternate timeline was flung out of reality like a slingshot.

OTTO
I won't pretend to understand a word of what you just said.

ZACH
No, I wouldn't either.

DOCTOR
It's fine. Probably! Shall we get you home, Otto? If the time's right, something incredible is about to happen…

OTTO
I don't understand.

DOCTOR
Don't worry. You will.

The Doctor pulls on the handbrake. [Track 13 ends]

17 EXT. EAST BERLIN STREETS - EVENING
[Track 14: Home] The TARDIS arrives where it did before, in another 1989. The sun is starting to fall, and as it does, many of the former members of East Berlin are running down the roads. The Doctor, Zach and Otto step out of the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
Here we are. Welcome, Otto, to Berlin! Again.

The Doctor gestures to the wall. Or, rather, what is left of the wall. In its place is vast amounts of rubble, which many residents of both East Berlin and West Berlin are now rushing over to tear down. Cheers and whoops echo as the stone brickwork comes crashing down upon them. Soldiers watch on a little confused as to help out or not. As the seconds pass, more and more topples down, each time resulting in a resounding cry. Otto is in shock.

OTTO
I… don't… what?

DOCTOR
Don't worry. We see it too.

OTTO
The… wall! It's… being torn down!

DOCTOR
Yep.

Otto begins to cry again. This time they are tears of joy and astonishment.

OTTO
I don't believe it… I'm dreaming, all of this…

ZACH
Not a dream. Reality at last.

OTTO
Doctor… Zach… thank you.

DOCTOR
Oh, no! This wasn't our doing, Otto. This was yours. You and your fighters. You, who above all else, stood and fought against evil. And tonight, you did it again. You changed history.

OTTO
You mean it?

DOCTOR
Of course I do!

OTTO
My… my people! My people are free?

DOCTOR
Cross my hearts!

OTTO
...Will any of them remember what happened? Before?

DOCTOR
'fraid not. Just you. Sorry about that.

OTTO
Good. They won't remember the terrors. Many people will still be alive.

DOCTOR
Go on, go and help your family. Enjoy your freedom. You earned it.

OTTO
Yeah, yeah…

He starts to speed off towards the wall.

ZACH
Oh, and Otto?

OTTO
Yes?

ZACH
What I said, earlier… about grief. Give it a try, will you? Don't… let it eat away at you. I've had friends seriously lose themselves for not talking about these things. Even if it's just your sisters. Give them a quick chat about it, yeah?

OTTO
I will. I promise.

Heidi and Otto see each other, immediately embracing.

HEIDI
Otto? Otto?! Where have you been?! Where've you been?!

OTTO
Oh, Heidi! You will not believe the day I've had…

HEIDI
No, I'm sure I won't!

OTTO
Goodbye, Doctor! Goodbye, Zach!

Otto waves.

HEIDI
Who are you talking to?

Zach turns to the Doctor.

ZACH
Hang on.

DOCTOR
What?

ZACH
I just realised. They're speaking English.

DOCTOR
Not quite. German.

ZACH
...Then how come I understand them?

DOCTOR
Ah! Glad you asked. That's the TARDIS's translation circuit. Translates any language into your own and vice versa. Handy for Gallifreyans.

ZACH
Wait, so does that mean… are you not speaking English right now?

The Doctor does not answer, only smiling as she turns to go back to the TARDIS.

ZACH
Doctor? Doctor?!

Zach rushes after her, into the TARDIS.

ZACH
Doctor!

The camera pans out from the TARDIS, back to the wall. Golden hues envelope the now-devastated Berlin Wall. And in the rubble, life begins.
And for one moment, one, glorious moment, life was still. [Track 14 ends]
